Wayne State University part 02

Out of curiosity, does it really matter?

Am having a hard time imagining that this is something that's coming up on the interview trail.

I've heard noone will rank you unless you know and get it exactly right.

Had my first interview yesterday - twelve 20 minute interviews between 10 am and 3 pm is a lot like work 🙁.

Hey all, I have great interest in this school, however being out of state the finances are a bit daunting. I was wondering if anyone can give me any idea what the average indebtedness looks like specifically for OOS students, are there a number of scholarships that bring the COA number down to a more manageable number.

Thank you for any help!

Does anyone know? I'm interested, as well, about the scholarship opportunities, and how easy it is to get Michigan Residency. What exactly is the current listed tuition and cost of living anyway? Thanks!

You will not gain residency if you decide to come to Wayne, as you have needed to have worked in the state for a full year. It sucks, but its reality. Wayne does give scholarships (full) to 10 people, which were the highest rated applicants by what ever system they use to evaluate people. The current tuition for this current year is:

IS: 26,910
OS: 56,000

This does NOT include other fees and other costs associated with attending. There is an omnibus fee and some other stuff too

I'm an OOS MS1 here at Wayne. Here are the OOS numbers for 2008-2009...

Books and Supplies $1,430.00
Living Expenses $12,950.00
Personal and Other $3,203.00
Transportation $4,150.00
Tuition, Registration, Omnibus $57,515.00

Total:

$79,248.00

😱

Sucks don't it? And it'll go up every year. And Wayne doesn't like to give scholarships to OOS students.

But don't worry... you're gonna be a doctor. Cheers.

EDIT: And forget about getting in-state status. Ain't gonna happen.

The first is so that your teachers know that you are covering everything that you are supposed to, and so they can add anything you are missing. The second reason is for your 150+ point OSCE at the end of the year, and you have to say you are doing everything step by step so you get the points you deserve. For your year 3 clerkships, you do NOT verbalize everything (in fact, I say very little); think what it would be like during your OB rotation for your patient when you are doing a pelvic exam and you are talking yourself through it.

which is what the folks/trainers at gynica (or whatever it was called) actually tell you to do... in order to keep the Pt "informed" and "more comfortable" (same reason they wanted us to have a mirror that the Pt could use to observe and follow along).

I always talk through my exams, though not nearly to the extent of OSCE's. Patients seem to appreciate it -- especially when the exam is a little more invasive or they are nervous.

And while this is totally TMI, I have to add that when I had my first Gyn exam, they physician pre-explained everything. Then she re-explained while the exam was happening. Then she actually offered the mirror thing -- and since I'm gross, I took her up on the offer. I had never been more nervous in my life; I was so sure that the exam was going to be a terrible painful experience but she really calmed me down and I ended up laughing by the end.

I actually was successful in changing my residency status from out-of-state to instate without having to come and work for a year, although it was quite the process. I'm married, we're both paying taxes/Mi drivers licenses etc., bought a house, and had to show we had a good reason for coming and staying here...in my case it was working with a mentor that I knew beforehand that deals with a very specific aspect of medicine. You have to fill out a bunch of paperwork/written statements and then it's presented before a board that votes on it...and they aren't too happy about loosing the extra $25+K. So it can be done but you gotta present a really good case.

oh no, i just wanted to know for my own curiosity. i heard it was ~270.

so how are interviews going for everyone? any strange experiences???? most of mine have been good, except for one where i walked in and he started to go over my application for the first time right in front of me.... then after 5 mins of mostly silenced he asked if i had any questions for him.🙄

Ba ha ha ha!
You should have said, "Yes. I was wondering why a program's interviewer would waste my time by not reading my application prior to the interview -- I don't think I'll be ranking your program."

I have my first interview this coming tuesday and 3 more later this month... so I'll let you know how they go 🙂

good luck. yeah, that interview was for a crappy transitional year... scheduled it first for a reason. the other 2 were pretty chill and seemed genuinely interested.

just finished a week of 3 interviews, I think my brain has gone on strike due to unreasonable working conditions

I scheduled 5 interviews this month. It layed out like Mon 1, Mon2, Sat, Mon 3, Thurs...So inbetween my Sat and Mon3 I have one day to do my laundry and get my stuff repacked and drive up on Sunday so I can make it to the meet and greet. I didn't think it looked to bad until I started adding in the drive time and the meet and greets and the drive back. Then I thought I should have spaced them out a little more.

I've only had the Mon 1 so far. Pretty chill interview. I was surprised at the size of the facilities. I think that from Wayne and the DMC we get the impression that every facility should be supersized...then you go to one of these community interviews and their entire ER is the size of the recuss bays and mod 1 ..????... I literally thought "where is the rest of it?" And the OR suite had 10 rooms.... remembering Harper "where is the rest of it?" I will probably end up ranking that program but if I end up there talk about a major culture shock!

Sounds like that could be a tiring month, but I've heard of (and done) worse ones on the interview trail. Try a interview trip out west where I did 5 programs in just over a week (immediately on the heels of CS).

I'll second your thoughts on the challenges of adjusting to the various sizes of other facilities. Although sometimes that is a very nice adjustment to make.

Bored, Bored, Bored!!! I am on Cards this month at St. John's. I work approx 3-4 hours a day including the 1 hour morning report and the 1 hour lunch lecture. That leaves 2 hours for seeing my 2 patients, their notes, and rounds. The other time I spend here is waiting for all of the above to happen. I am so getting out of here early today because I have spent the past two days here until 4 pm....not nice.

Another note: I went to another interview this past Mon. When I show up in the morning for breakfast and the "here is our program" crap the 4th year resident (will be senior next year) walks up to me and says "Hi, your Jenn right? I met you in San Fran. You're the one with the Ledgerwood letter!" OK so a couple of points here. All of the applicants are standing around and she is very loudly saying all of this. One of the other interveiwees gives me the stink eye. I'm embarassed because 1) I have no recollection of ever meeting this peron (met way too many people to remember them all out there) 2) I didn't think letters from the L's were that uncommon 3) No one else around was talking so her comments were very loud sounding and obvious. So I just down-played it and said yea it is me... I mean - what the heck? It's not like I'm some super-duper-uber-highly-recruited applicant.

Yes, but the only way your letter could be better is if it was cosigned by Chuck Norris -- Talk about getting a legend to write your letter!

So - what was the best part about 2nd year for those of you who survived it? I am trying to get my positive outlook back...

By way of procrastination - I have been trying to -for what seems forever -to find the goljan pathbio audio lectures online. Has anyone ever used them - and were they at all helpful? If yes - any advice on where I can get them?

Thanks and good luck to all of you interviewing!

the best thing about second year for me was sleeping in until noon and staying at home most of the days... ha ha.....😴 you do not get much control over your schedule third year.... and you may not always like your rotation. Looking back, having some control over your schedule second year was what i misssed. so far 4th year is best....

goljan is good if you are an auditory learner and have a long drive... or you can pay attention while exercising. you have enough to study second year and it is important not to get bogged down studying too many things. the notes (and first aid) should be sufficient most of the time....

If you haven't started using BRS for each class I highly recommend you do. I was really behind for our four tests and it helped me do pretty well.

HAHA Chuck Norris - the man of the never-ending upper lip poorly concealed by his absurdly large mustasche! Maybe MacGyver would be a better cosigner though - more ingenuity with stuff???

Pretty much every student who rotates with them gets a letter. That is 3 per month at DRH and 3 per month at Harper. So ~72 people a year get letters from them...not a big deal really.

Regarding the L&L letter, I got a similar reaction from a interviewer when he saw my letter from Dr. Stanton. For those who may not know, Dr. Stanton along with being the Chair of Pediatrics at Children's, is the coeditor of Nelson's Pediatrics, the bible for peds. She also writes wonderful letters for every single applicant applying peds from Wayne. I guess we've got some great resources at Wayne!! Easy name recognition for those perusing our letters.

similar reaction for people reading one of my LORs from someone similar at DMC for the field that I am applying to... i was a little confused to because A LOT of people have letters written by this person, but at my last interview the interviewer said, "I get a lot of letters from this person from WSU, but they usually all look similar or follow a particular form. Yours is not a form letter." So perhaps, L&L or Stanton wrote you guys a really nice letter- perhaps nicer than other LORs and that is the reason people are commenting???

Hey guys, I've been accepted to the school and I fully plan on coming here. Just wanted some opinions on housing? Any places close to school that the majority of students live at? Thanks a bunch!

ha ha.. yeah, i am not matched yet. i think most people on here know what i am doing so not much need to say.

I had half expected someone to counter by pointing out just how clear I am about where I am currently at...

Opinions on housing... is it already time for that issue to make its annual appearance?

SBK: Re housing first thing to figure out is what your priorities are and what you want to have nearby. The answer to that will brive our suggestions.
If you want to live as close to Scott Hall as possible then there is some of the WSU housing (University Towers, etc). Little bit further out (but still in the D) are some of the buildings/complexes along the Riverfront. If you go out to the East side (Grosse Pointes, etc) it tends to be quiter with less nightlife (not to say that you can't find it if you want to). North to Royal Oak gets you more of the nightlife and "young professionals" scene.
Speaking historically, when my class started (a few years back) it was 1/3 in the D, 1/3 in Royal Oak (area) and 1/3 in the rest of the 'burbs. As the years progressed that ratio shifted to more strongly favor RO.

Another suggestion would be to use the search function - both in SDN and this thread - to review prior discussions on this topic.

Finally, congratulations on your acceptance!

So a quick question about Z-scores. They released our histo final combined scores, and they gave a Z-score for the honor rate. This rate was 566. So does that mean that honoring was any Z-score above 566? or above 600? which is what I thought everyone said was the score to get to honor....

if you're above a 566 it means your honoring...

and also that your classes overall averages were high.

EM in michigan... haha yeah, that is incredibly specific... let me look at last years matchlist for EM males in michigan, haha...

edit: so that was not helpful... narrowed it down to 10 or 11 people... oh wait, but "new place in michigan", so that will count out a few of the people who stayed in detroit area... so perhaps you are in kzoo or lansing?

Yesterday I got a last minute invite from one of the programs I'm very interested in...yaa. Boo that they only had 2 dates open: THIS Sat and one in Jan (No Jan for me please). I took this Sat. However that means that I have to get to the dry cleaners a couple of days earlier, have my car tuned-up today instead of on Fri as planned to travel for my Mon Cleveland area interviews.

Oh - and double check on babysitters - argh! I am also starting to think interview season is "stupid"!

Amen - 6 down 8 (probably 7) to go.

I remember last year about this time last year seeing oldjeeps (or some other former M4) post that the interview season sucked and wanting to punch him in the throat because I was languishing in peds, and I couldn't see how interviewing could be worse, well . . . . sorry oldjeeps

Hey Jenn - if you have time go to the A Christmas Story museum in Cleveland, I went when I was there last month because I had hours to kill before my flight out - I love that movie, and they've made the house it was filmed in a museum.

I've learned recently that not everyone knows this movie (answer to the question - "How to make yourself feel old?" - bring up this movie while talking to other interviewees, and they have no idea what I'm talking about) - so here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvMLfSQrHKE

wow, this movie was on like every christmas. It's a classic. I am sure I have seen it like 10 times... it is the reason i wanted a BB gun! hmm.. I was a "Tv kid" though, haha...

the sad thing is that i have done 10 interviews and I am not nearly half done. When you have apply to TY programs, it really stinks. I am doing too many... I want to cancel some, but the other part of me wants to see the programs and would feel bad for canceling. I have been told to be careful about canceling... one PD told me if you accept the interview you should go... so I guess I will go. Fortunately, all our in the midwest within driving distance.

Mine are all in driving distance as well - although that is becoming more relative as the weather deteriorates. Sucks about the TY programs - automatically doubling the interviews. Scheduling has got to be wretched! I had a hard time scheduling my 10 because so many places interview on the same days. Over 1/2 of my interveiws have been/are on Mondays. I have the feeling that they do this on purpose to only get those "truly interested" applicants. Because some programs interview later I have had to reschule 2 different interviews for Dec so I could fit in programs that only offered one or two dates per month. 6 down 4 to go.

hmmmm - my BIL had a question about clin med #1 for 1st year. Does anyone have a copy of a practice test? I can't remember if there was one or not and I don't have anything in my "good stuff to keep folders"

Not too big a deal but I thought I would send out and see what came back...

thanks...jenn

Hmmm. I don't really remember one, but maybe there was and I just didn't do it. Tell him to relax -- the Clin med 1 exam was easy peezy!

That is what I told him as well - just to do the prac q's for all of the epidemiology junk. But to appease his neurotic self I sent out the call. I think it is mostly because that the clin med, phys 1, and biochm 1 are all in the same week. HAHAHA - I told him to wait until 2nd year when you always have 2 or 3 tests, and then it is 2x/mo and not 1x/mo.
