they cut the EtOH cause it "got crazy" in past years... at least, that's what the rumor going around was.

yeah, last year there was a game of tippy cup... students and a faculty member that when dr. j and dr. b brokeup was moved upstairs. also i heard rumors (not sure how true) of drunk faculty members walking around outside the school afterward... and the concern was that this might reflect poorly on the school.

anybody know how neuro at sinai grace is?

aren't most 4th years on month long vacations about now (aside from interviewing)???? 😀

just going back to the parents. would like to go some where nice, but kind of short on money. we have had things to fix or tires to replace on both cars... arg!

Although I have to admit that this December is far nicer than last year (Surg at Harper :scared:), this interview trail is getting to me with 8 down and 5 to go. I am technically "off" this month, but traveling this much is brutal. So, don't believe everything you hear about fourth year being cake; I'm still waiting for the "good life" to start.

i am not looking forward to the application and interview process... is it as bad as applying to med school?

i am not looking forward to the application and interview process... is it as bad as applying to med school?

That would depend on what the application process for med school was like for you.
I'm looking forward to Match Day, even if a bit nervous about it.

It's pretty stressful. Keep in mind there is no "I'll try again next year." This is for your career, not just the next step in school. The bright side is that there are no secondaries and the interviews are more to see if you fit with the program rather than if you can make it through med school. So, take your pick on which is worse. I think the worst part is spending this much money on travel expenses (not to mention time) when we're desperately trying to stop the money hemorrhage.

And now I'm off to Big 12 country. See you next week.

1) That game of tip cup was awesome last year.

2) ERAS is much easier than AMCAS mainly because you don't have to enter grades and can copy all your pre-med stuff straight from AMCAS. Also, no secondaries to worry about.

Hi guys,
I'm not a WSU student, but rotated with you guys on a number of occassion.

I had a question for you as I know Wayne rotates through Henry Ford and Oakwood. Have any of you guys done a Family Medicine rotation at either Henry Ford or Oakwood?

If so, can you tell me how you liked your rotation? Were the residents pretty cool or just plain tired looking and out of it?

If you've heard anything about either program, let me know!
Thanks 😀

I did my family rotation at Oakwood. I knew going in that I absolutely did not want to do family, so I didn't put a ton of effort into the rotation, but still got a lot out of it. The residents are all very nice and pleasent, most of them let me do a lot on my own. I think that says that they are confident in what they are doing, and so they're comfortable enough to let students do things on their own. I think that's because they're taught so well. They don't seem at all overtired, although I think they spend a decent amount of time on the floors at one of Oakwoods smaller hospitals. The faculty are great, they teach well, in the whole month, I don't think I saw any resident getting anywhere near yelled at.

The only thing about Oakwood is that I've heard there's some financial shaking up going on there - some faculty aren't happy - just rumor, but that's what I heard.

I've also done family at Oakwood and have the same feelings. I knew going in I probably did not want to do family, so I didn't know how much I would enjoy the rotation. However, it was actually quite enjoyable (or at least more than i thought it would be). The faculty are friendly and good teachers. The residents seem well trained, but not overworked. I would recommend anyone interested in FM to do a rotation at oakwood with Dr. Scott Yaekle.

Random question: Where can you find out about subleases downtown?

Random question: Where can you find out about subleases downtown?

truly downtown or are you just looking for a shorter commute?

Are you really looking to sublet or are you just looking for housing? I know of a resident at DRH (who occasionally walks to the work) that's looking for some housemates.

so the last few times that i have been to scott hall (since the supposed smoking ban) i walk to the door i still pass the usual smokers. I had been thinking, 'well perhaps the security guard will enforce this', etc. well today i walk by and i see the security guard/ door lady smoking with all the regulars right in front of the 'no smoking sign'... what gives? is every one corrupted at scott hall, right down to the security guards? lol

Truly downtown....and a sublet. At the moment i'm afraid of making a comittment.

Anyone else attempt to do that "best learning experience" essay? I did it on Christmas Eve when it was due and I'm hoping that not a lot of people did it. 😛

A few weeks ago we got an email that very few people did the essays so I wonder how many more poor students like me were trying to throw some words together to get some free money. 😉

IIRC last year the neuro orientations were in one of the Crockett classrooms in UHC. We started with a main clerkship orientation there and then the individual sites had seperate orientations after that.

Sorry, but I don't recall what time the orientation started.

I cranked mine out in a few hours on Dec 22-23. I think I was as brutally honest as I dared to be, but in retrospect I am kicking myself a little that I never worked the well-known "wayned" into my essay at all.

Although the $$ would be nice to offset my interview travel expenses, I wrote the essay hoping that something would actually start changing for the better for you guys that are still here for a while.

In other news, only 3 more interviews to go! Any other 4th years out there very glad to be wrapping up on the trail?

We start again on Wednesday. I'm sad. 🙁

How was everyone's break? I'm going snowboarding tomorrow with all the snow and I might die. Let's hope I only break my left leg so I can still drive to class.

anybody know how psych at HF is??

HF psych is supposed to be great -- everyone from my group who had it there had a great time and learned a lot (the same can not be said many of the other sites...). Consider yourself lucky!

Anybody know how to set up the PDA for wireless access at HFH? It keeps telling me that I "can't connect with these settings" or that i need a password or something. I NEEEED this for the very important work (read webgames) I have to do during the day. haha.

p.s. I love Neuro at HFH.

So I would like to grab the opinions of those of you on here who have already done internal medicine this year.

I have my IM rotation scheduled for Club Beaumont and am feeling like I might like to switch with someone else for downtown. Did any of you have IM downtown? Did you feel like you learned a lot? Did you get a lot of responsibility?

Thanks!

Tybalt,

If you do internal at Sinai Grace, you will learn heaps (not from lecture, but from helping managed the 300 patients your team has at a time) and you will get a good evaluation. (because your interns will likely be bright as a burnt-out lightbulbs) Seriously, I managed a good number of my patients directly under my senior resident because I couldn't find my intern.

Yay for psych at Henry Ford!
BOOOO for the VA. Seriously, VA stands for "very autonomous" when it comes to neuro, because your residents don't care where you are. We don't even have an actual department. And the paperwork is a nightmare. Start trying to get your badge at least 3 weeks in advance.

Thanks a lot! Good info to know.

Anyone else have an opinion about other downtown hospitals? Pwease?

i fee like 85% of psych is spent doing paperwork..

Any other 4th years done with interviews? I finished before Xmas and I've already got my rough ROL made up. Looks like I'll be needing to sell my house if anyone is looking.

I finished mine on the 8th, then drove over seven hours back to get home at 2:30 am with the rotation the next day starting at 7am. Now that was a bad "welcome back to the real world" day.

I pretty much have my rank list set up. I would be very happy ending up at any of my top 4, so things are looking good.

what are you guys applying for anyways? katrina is EM? ddmo is ortho, of course...

anybody know anything about the cardio rotation at the VA?

For any other 4th years that had to stream the class meeting from last week, apparently there are several forms for us to pick up in Student Affairs and we have to schedule another appointment with Lynette for ranking lists.

Be warned about watching that video: I literally had to break out the liquor to listen to Kertia Black for THAT LONG.

Can someone please put up the reply that contains one of the past match days for wayne. I think it was posted in a reply from the first part of this thread. I can't seem to find it at all. Thank you.

So, I show up at this Summer Externship Extravaganza (scheduled from 12 - 1:30) at 12:55 today. The pizza's gone, the swag is gone, and all but one rep from the hospitals are gone.

Does anyone know exactly what a "Letter of Intent" is. According to the websites of some of the programs, you have to include it with your app.

BTW, does anyone here have experience with these programs? Are they worthwhile?

I almost ended up doing an externship, but ended up doing research instead. I seem to think the LOI was a letter where you told them why you wanted to participate and what you would gain and promised that you would show up.. ?blah blah?.. if they accepted you. Prob best to contact the programs or student affairs to find out for sure.

A few of my friends did externships and were pleased with their experiences. Good to get a preview of third year and a better idea of what specialty interests you.

It's official! WSU is now the 5th most expensive public medical school in the country with an annual tuition and fees rate of $30,912. Only Penn State, Virginia, Minnesota, and Oregon are more expensive. http://services.aamc.org/tsfreports...ee_sort&year_of_study=2008&select_control=PUB

Hey, at least we are almost #1 at something besides already being the largest single campus school.

We are only 2 months exactly away from the match, at which point I can rejoice that I am officially out of here, never to be wayned again.

So, is anyone else observing MLK day today? It is technically a school holiday for us, according to the 3rd year schedule. I am actually speed reading PreTest Neuro, and periodically stopping to think about the contributions MLK made to our country's history..... Anyone else cramming for the upcomming 1 month shelf? Or did you go to your rotation? Did you even know it was a school holiday? I might not have known, except I was desperate for another study day since I was so unmotivated at the beginging of this rotation.....

Thanks Deowolf for the statistic! I can't wait to stop hemorrhaging money.

For me, MLK day is more of an observance than an actual holiday, similar to President's Day, Columbus Day, Flag Day, New Years Day, etc. You think about it for a few seconds, then get back to work. It really isn't a big enough deal to do much more than that.

Wait until next year when you really start hemorrhaging money on things like Step 2, interviews, etc.

Damn! I knew I should've went to med school in Texas! 😡

Have you got your ROL figured out yet? I'm still playing with mine. 1-4 are pretty much solid, but 5-10 keep doing the switcheroo.

I just certified with Lynette today. My 1-4 were solid; my 9-13 were set; I just had to juggle 5-8 around last night. I have to tell you that certifying lifted an enormous load off my chest now that the whole interview process is done. So, I'd recommend doing it sooner rather than later.

why do we have to use these PDAs to log cases?

why do we have to use these PDAs to log cases?

Because the WSU administration says so, and it forces the clerkship directors into it. That's it; no other reason. And I'm sure you've found it's absolutely pointless and time-consuming.

If it makes you feel any better, I have not turned mine on since July.
