Welcome to the early release of the new Forums!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
if i wanted to like stuff i would be on facebook. having karma points leads to all those unfunny pun threads and karmawhoring reposts on reddit

+1 Likes on a forum tend to promote a mob mentality where people judge posts based on likes. And I think it discourages openness, particularly around sensitive and difficult issues. I think debates should be left to the reader to judge, and they are free to contribute something substantial if they want to emphasize a point made in a post.

omg how are gonna quote me and say +1 without clicking the like button
i need imaginary internet points to feel important and loved

okay there are alerts and a newsfeed now what the hell
those are the worst parts of facebook
even the edit post thing looks like facebook

this is some blatant copying

im not here to pretend like my life is awesome and im going on vacation to the tropics all the time and post bikini pics so that people can like my album

im here to talk about getting into and getting through medical school

someone needs to stop yehhhboiii he is on a rampage i'm worried we are going to run out of likes and its only the first day mods please do something

The forum conversion is complete, but it will take a while for all the small details to be finalized (after 12 years and 14 million+ posts, you can imagine that there are a lot of details to manage). I felt it was more important to get the forums back to you, rather than have it perfect.

The forums are in the process of cache rebuilding and that means there will be some display 'weirdness' for a few hours until the cache has caught-up. The search function will be available soon as well.

It sucks that the badges are gone. There goes the gold badge and the perk of having a bigger picture. And I was just about to get my 2 year badge.

🙁

I'm weirded out by all the white. But I'm sure in time I will get used to it. Aside from the change in color scheme, and the smaller smiley face repository, I think it's a good change.

The only major thing that I miss (as of right now) is that we can't see MDApps links under usernames anymore.

The rep system is nice, but at this point I think it's kind of unnecessary.

I'm liking the new layout, its nice and refreshing!

Like the large "next" button at the bottom. However, I would like to be able to go directly to the college specific threads without hitting the allopathic or osteopathic button first.

P.S. Now there will be gunner competitions to see who gets the most likes. (Hey, says the gunner, why can't I like my own post.)

I'm liking a lot of the new features, can't wait for even more upgrades. Please get a blue theme!

Did the old platform have a 10,000 character limit for posts? I tried editing a post on the physician scientist forum and got rejected for exceeding a character limit.

I know this is mainly about the format update, but as long as we're talking change, could we add multi-quote functionality for the app in the future? I know I can just go to the phone browser and do it there, but I guess I tend towards the lazy 😛

I would love an option, perhaps in preferences, to change the number of replies visible in a particular thread.

Yes, it would be nice to go back to 50 replies per page. I'm sure this will be rolled out soon enough though.

But SDN, please get rid of the "like" feature on individual posts. All it does is create pandering posts for more "likes" and totally degrades the quality of responses.

Otherwise I like the update.

I was hoping Trophy Points were like PSN trophies or Xbox achievements that you got for doing certain things, but right now it's just your first post and how long you've been a member, lol.
+1

My inner-gamer wants achievements!

In any case, I look forward to all the new changes. So exciting!

If you are on the main forums page and hover over where it says "Subforums:" using your mouse, an overlay will appear that can take you straight to the SSD or WAMC or whatever subforum you're looking for

My avatar disappeared...I assume the pre-set ones were gone. Not a big deal though, can always find another....or stay a question mark 😛

You really think we will let that happen? You still have report post ability and meaningful contribution is still in the TOS.

I appreciate you and sector9 and Lee and the mods/super mods/admins for helping us out. But doesn't the Facebook version defeat #1 of TOS?

It's optional to associate with Facebook. Def not mandatory and I wouldn't recommend it, but even on the old system we let people associate with twitter accounts. For some reason people like to have this option. I won't be using it. And you still can't give out other peoples info.

What i meant by that is if someone registers by Facebook... their username = real name right?

It's not against TOS to reveal your own identity. It's against TOS to reveal someone else's identity.

Also, the Trophy Points leaderboard is a joke because it is basically filled with decade-old SDN's members who haven't contributed anything in years....

It actually is against the TOS to reveal your own identity. From the TOS:

  1. Protect anonymity. Remember, the SDN Forums are followed by students, doctors, schools and professional organizations. Please keep your identity protecteddon’t post or use your real name on the forums. Additionally, members are not permitted to solicit personally identifiable information from other members (such as through research surveys, etc) without written permission from SDN or disclose another member’s identity without their written permission.

Good question. I'm not entirely sure. I thought you still had to select a username. Sector?
You can't really register by Facebook. As Caesar suggests, you will still need to create a SDN username to post under, even if you register via Facebook.

You can login by facebook though if you link your SDN account with your Facebook. You will still need to have a SDN account and your posts will still show up with your SDN username. The facebook integration can show your SDN activity on your facebook feed, but this can also be disabled by clicking "Skip" when you see the dialog box "Student Doctor Network Forums would like to post to Facebook for you."

You can link your existing SDN account with your Facebook account by clicking on the "Facebook Integration" link in your settings. I think that the main purpose is to 1. show your SDN activity on your Facebook feed if you want and 2. make it easier to log in to SDN

If your Facebook account and SDN account share an email address and you try to login to SDN using the "Login with Facebook" button, you will be prompted to link the two accounts.

If you don't have a SDN account yet (or if there isn't a match between your SDN and Facebook email addresses), you will be taken to the screen to create a new SDN account, including a SDN username. All users, whether they try to link via FB or not, agree to SDN's terms of service and provide the same basic info.

If you try out the FB integration and decide you don't like it, then simply go back in to your account settings and check the box for "Disassociate Facebook account" and then confirm it.

If you don't want to associate your FB and SDN accounts, then you still have the same functionality on the SDN Forums! The only problem is that none of your FB friends know how awesome you are on SDN 😉 The normal SDN accounts are not going anywhere, and you will never be forced to login to SDN using Facebook if you don't want to!
