Welcome to the early release of the new Forums!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Is there a way to collapse the different sections on the forum's home screen (like the old version)? ...It is a pain having to scroll down through all the forums that one never uses.

Not at this time. I've been using the "watched forums" feature. Just go to your regularly used forums and click the "watch forum" link at the top right of the thread. Then instead of going to the main "forums" page, click on the "Watched Forums" tab.

Nice. Thanks.

that was an option 😱

1. Trophy points
3. I don't see anything green?

Saying the member has trophy points just because he/she posts a lot diminshes what a trophy represents. Again, like "likes", it takes away from the purpose of this forum. Please rethink this.
3. the green I was referring to can be found in ismet's page.

The green banner? Try adjusting the screen brightness/contrast on your computer or something, because both that text and the borders around each post (which you alluded to earlier) are showing up perfectly fine for me. I can easily see the distinction between posts in a thread.

Trophy points are based on how long you have been a member, not how many posts you have. It's pretty much the same thing as having the 2+ year badge or the 5+ year badge, so it's not like it's something completely new, just a new way to present that information.

You can use the same judgment you've been using all along to determine the validity of posts. I really don't see why some are so up in arms about the likes and trophy points. Ignore them if you don't like them. The forum is still the same. This is not like reddit, the "unliked" posts are not going to disappear from view or suddenly become less important. The "liked" posts aren't going to have bells and whistles alerting everyone to their greatness. It's different, and it might not be ideal, but it's also not a big deal and it shouldn't drastically change how you use the forums. It hasn't changed how I use it.

And I feel like I'm repeating myself, but be patient. This is not the final state of the forums. Things are still being fixed and changed. The alternative would be to shut down SDN for several days, and people would be complaining then, too! 😛

If you look at the trophy page, most of the points come from being a member for a certain number of years, not the number of posts. It doesn't seem that different from the 2, 5, and 10 year badges to me.

having likes and points does change things
for example, if i post something useful on the facebook group for my class and no one likes it or comments, that discourages me and makes me not want to share things anymore because no one seems to care
but i know people are using it because i know that there are plenty of times when i use something that someone posted and didn't "like" it or comment
people also go up to me in real life and say thanks as i do for people who post things. so i know that people appreciate them.

of course it hasn't changed how you use it because it's been one day. but i've seen how the point/like system affected my posting and reading habits on facebook and reddit over the course of several years so why wouldn't it affect it here? it's an unnecessary deterrent to the free exchange of ideas

Lol the same thing happens on our facebook group. I haven't let that stop me from posting something I think would be helpful. I found it helpful, and if other people find it helpful too, that's great. If they don't, that's great too. Doesn't matter to me either way, but maybe I helped someone out in the process.

As for SDN, people have disagreed with me, I have been outright wrong on many occasions, but that hasn't stopped me from contributing. I think those two things are more discouraging than not getting a plethora of virtual thumbs up, which is pretty meaningless. Just my opinion.

Good samaritans 🙂

Ismet, your work on the forums has been superb.

The "likes" are kind of superfluous to me, but I really don't care either way. I don't think it changes anything about SDN and its "free exchange of ideas." We already have a culture built here that makes people second-guess what they post. If you post something stupid on the forums, you're going to get a bunch of sarcastic remarks, funny gifs, and memes. On the flip-side, positive comments get the thumb ups and +1s. I suspect that very few are going to significantly change their posting habits because of this "like" system.

So maybe this is a dumb question, but what is the new/established/senior member status now based on? It doesn't seem to be length of membership or number of posts.

The fact that nobody "liked" your posts on a facebook group should never stop you from posting. Continue to post as much as you want. After all, if the stuff you post is helpful, people will appreciate it. Besides, a real life "thanks" is 100x better than a virtual "like". Similar to hearing "Happy Birthday!" from someone in person compared to reading it from someone who talked to once in 10 years on FB.

Why is there a difference between the titles that show up when we're about to create a new thread and the titles that come from the search function?

I feel as though the threads that show up when we are creating a new thread are much more relevant than the search function.
I have now even begun to ignore the search function and use this method to find an answer.

Kind of a weird complaint, but the signatures people include are the same size and color and style as the quotes in their main post, and it makes it kind of confusing while scrolling. Maybe that's just me though.

I like some of the new added options, but I do miss the badges, status, and number of pages without hovering the mouse over the thread. Hopefully those will be slowly added in the upcoming week or so.

Sorry if this post comes across as a bit rude.

Did SDN really have to change the layout during the MIDDLE of the application cycle? The site has been going down periodically and we can't access any of the forums. A lot of us are preparing for upcoming interviews and/or trying to write update/interest letters, and we could really use the forums to help us out with that. But its hard to do that when SDN is down pretty often. Honestly, this should've been done during winter break (when people don't really need SDN as much) or later in the application cycle (like Feb/Mar) when things start to die down.

I have nothing against the changes and updates. Just wish the timing could've been better.

Anyone else having trouble with Interview Feedback? I can click the actual school but I get a "Page Not Found" when I click on the actual link for the survey results

we apologize that this free service is not up to your exacting standards

I hope it gets fixed soon 🙁 I have an interview in a week and this is freaking me out haha.

I appreciate the free service. I guess my post was just food for thought just in case you guys do another update sometime in the future. Again sorry if that last post came across as rude/ungrateful...I'm just really stressed out about my next interview/writing update letters for my top schools (who I've heard nothing but silence from).

Okay, so here are a few questions I have about this:

4) Bring back MDapps! That was SDN's best feature. (Or tell me how to find it.)

We're working on the fix for Interview Feedback. In the meantime, you can get access to the Interview Feedback survey results if you take one of the "/school" out of the URL that gives the error. It's a hack but it will get you to the data.

I'd like to know the answer to this as well.

Interview Feedback Update:
You can access the survey results from the main Interview Feedback page by doing the following.

1. Navigate to http://studentdoctor.net/schools/
2. For your desired school, click the number under the Interview Feedback header:

We are working on getting the school information pages fixed so the link works as well.

One of the most important reasons for the update was to decrease the amount of downtime and problems we were experiencing with the old software. The new update should significantly decrease the amount of downtime, especially once all the kinks are worked out.

Looks like number of trophy points and there are only "New Members" and "Established Members" for now

Is it possible to change that tag under your name anymore? I tried going over to profile settings to change it but I couldn't see the option to do so, I could have just missed it

If you go to "Personal Details" in your settings, do see a field called "Custom title" under the spot for changing your avatar?

Sorry, I know this has prob been mentioned, but the interview feedback is not working. Even when following the instructions in that sticky image above. This is what happens:

Page Not Found
The requested page was not found. It may have moved, been deleted, or archived.

system/core/Kohana.php [875]:

The page you requested, schools/school/u-of-l, could not be found.

Will this be fixed soon?

I tried that but it didn't work...how should I put it in?

Man, I picked the wrong time to take a break from SDN.😱

Why did my post count double? Also, are trophy points like tickets at an arcade that I can redeem for cool stuff?

I really dont like it its not user friendly and idk how to use the various functions. I used to prefer using my laptop web browser. Now i prefer sdn mobile.

We're trying to run down this issue as well - I checked it was working immediately after the upgrade, but I think some CSS files were moved to the wrong place during some of our tuning activities after the launch, and it's not working now.

I'm able to get to the University of Louisville results by following the instructions above. Here's the link I get:

Yeah we need a reward system for these trophy points. Lee, hook us up with one of those SDN t-shirts free for every 100 trophy points 😛

THANK YOU! If anyone needs interview feedback, this link works. I just visited the school I'm interested in, copied their abbreviation from the "Page Not Found" link and pasted it in place of "u-of-l" and it works for all of the schools I've tried so far.

I haven't read most of the thread, but how can we tell who is a pre-medical student and who is a medical student?

Also are MDApps links under our post area thing going to be put back like in the old version? (Like where it says joined, messages, likes received, gender, location).

On the old platform, we were able to see which of our subscribed threads had unread posts - the threads with unread posts would show up as bold while the threads with no unread posts would not be bold. All of the thread titles on my watched threads page now are bolded, even if there are no unread posts. Any way that this could be fixed?
