I would e-mail or call them to check up on your application if you haven't received any notification that your app is complete. They sent me an e-mail on 10/26 saying that my app was complete. It's going to be really hard to concentrate at work today thinking about the possibility of getting an interview invite.

Wow, they're super early this year. Last year, the invites didn't go out until Jan 20th.
Let keep those invites rolling in SDN.
Remember not to lose hope just because you see everyone else getting invites on here...I know it's stressful...I din't get my invite until Feb 11, almost a month after the first invites went out.
Did they say when the interviews are gount to be held?

Yay, got my interview invite 🙂 Sent at 4:30 pm but just saw it now after work .... First come first serve interviews? Does that mean they invite people in phases? Or everyone gets the email at the same time and fights for the spots?

I believe they are sending the invites out in waves this year and I don't think it is so much "fighting for a spot" as it is "fighting for your preferred interview day". If that makes sense. Congrats and Good Luck! Everyone was really nice when I interviewed there last year. :luck:

I just now got the application complete email. Guess I should be paying closer attention, lol. I would have been worried if I had noticed! Well, um... I'm in review then. Here's hoping!
 
I just got my interview invite about 3 hours ago!!!!
after 3 hours of deliberation, I replied them with the date I prefer..and now i receive an automatic reply saying that the school is closed on 20th until Jan 2nd.
Does that mean I wont be able to know the exact date until Jan?
I am sooooo nervous, but so exciteddd!!!! I think im going crazy haha

Has anyone else applied but not received anything other than the "we received your VMCAS stuff" e-mail? I submitted mine at the last minute (but know the postmark was acceptable)... it's driving me nuts not being able to contact them for another couple of days! :scared:

I'm hoping it just means they haven't gotten to mine yet... :xf:
 
Yes, I have not received any confirmation yet either.
 
Don't worry just yet. The admission office is closed until Jan. 3rd. Lacey Avilla said that there are only two of them processing all the applications, and it takes awhile. Lacey said the bulk of the interview invites will go out when they return in January. They have been very nice when ever I had questions, you can try emailing to follow up.

For any other applicants who haven't heard anything since VMCAS... I was able to get in touch with admissions today, and was told that I shouldn't be concerned about the lack of a response at this point. They're still processing things.
 
Hi Everyone!
As my interview is coming up soon, I'm trying to plan my trip to CA. Anyone have suggestions on what areas are good/safe for hotels? It looks like I'll be flying into LAX and renting a car the day before and then staying over the night before and possibly the night of the interview as well. I'm doing the trip from the east coast by myself as my husband has obligations at home, and I've never been to CA before, so I'm a little nervous. Any advice would be appreciated!

Hey Tech2Vet, my interview is coming up soon, too. I just booked my hotel last night. I'm staying in Ontario at a hotel that had really good reviews. I would just do a search on one of the travel sites and see what previous customers have said about it.
 
Is it possible for you to fly into Ontario instead of LAX? Ontario is about 20 min from Pomona where LAX is an hour and depending on what time you are arriving it could take as long as 2 hours. Traffic from LAX is terrible. As far as where to stay...Claremont is a nice city about 10 minutes away. If you don't mind driving 30 min, the nicest place to stay would be Pasadena. There are many hotels, tons of places to eat, the Norton Simon Museum, an arboretum, and cute shopping areas.

For the person staying in Ontario, not sure of you are
concerned about driving 20 min on the day of your interview. If you want something closer I would suggest Claremont.

i would also suggest diamond bar, its one of the nicer areas around and still pretty close to pomona
 
I highly suggest flying into Ontario instead of LAX, but if you must, at least get a hotel that's closer to WesternU. There's a Comfort Inn in Pomona where I stayed for my interview, which is just a couple of blocks from the university. I took the bus to the university and it took me all of 4 minutes for the commute lol.

I think there's also the Hampton Inn in Chino (Chino Hills?), which is around a 10-15 minute drive, and if you look around the Chino area, there are tons plazas and whatnot in case you need them. Diamond Bar is also pretty close.

I just wanted to second what cautionary tail said! I just got an e-mail from admissions today asking me a question about a prerequisite that I took and that I had to clarify the details by Friday 1/7 (the review deadline) so that my application could be submitted for review. This whole time I have been freaking out because I haven't received an interview invite and they haven't even finished reviewing all of the applications yet!:smack: In all fairness, I didn't send in my supplemental application until the very last minute :whistle: so maybe that's why my application is being processed so late

Ack! I've been in correspondence with them regarding a prereq (the public speaking thing)... and I'm not sure whether everything's been resolved.

Hope they don't refuse to review me! 😱

ETA: I was at the post office an hour before close submitting that one. Supplemental was brutal!

Don't freak out too much (like I did last year); as I mentioned in an earlier post, they had my app with the adcom reviewing it until the last minute. I think more than half of the interviews were already done by the time I got my invite (I believe they added on another weekend of interviews last year). I'm actually surprised at how early they sent out interviews this year. So hold on tight!
Hopefully I will get to meet some of you SDNers during your interviews...I'm trying to get on the student panel/tour guides for interviews 😀
 
I'm surprised that my application cleared reviews without any questions about the courses since I doubt they get a whole lot of applicants from my university (but who knows, I guess). They must be waiting to finish reviewing all the files before sending out more notifications. They told me mine was complete before the break, but they're still sorting through others' applications.

I had the supplemental at the post office the day it was due too, with maybe 3-4 hours to spare. I overnighted it too, or sent it certified mail. I'm betting they get a lot of last-minute stuff. I picture the mailman coming in carrying arm-loads of manila envelopes and USPS parcels, plopping them down, wiping a brow, and saying, "Only two more in the truck still..."

Anyway, good luck everyone. I hope I get to visit the school, see some live-action PBL, and meet some SDNers while I'm there. 🙂

I second this! It is simply beautiful to have a major airport a few miles from the school! Fly to Ontario!

I stayed at Double Tree in Ontario... it was a bit pricy but pretty nice. There is a shuttle service that picks you up from Ontario Airport and takes you 5 min down the road to the hotel. I took a cab for ~$38 to the school. Simply, easy, I was able to focus on the interview instead of stressing about travel. Good luck!

I'm a third year at Western (DVM 2012) and can hopefully answer some of your questions...congrats on the interviews by the way!

Definitely fly into Ontario. It is 20 minutes from campus and about a $30 cab fare. As far as hotels, I stayed in Diamond Bar at Shilo Inn & Suites. They had a free shuttle with rides to/from the airport and also to campus the day of the interviews. Several of my current classmates also stayed there; it was nice having other nervous interviewees to chat with at breakfast (also included at the hotel). If I remember correctly, there was a discounted rate for Western interviewees.

Despite what others say, the Pomona area really isn't that bad. If you decide to stay at a large brand of hotel, like Holiday Inn Express or something I'm sure you will be fine.

I'm female and I wore a black suit (pants) with a light blue sweater cami. There will be a walking campus tour so keep that in mind if you are planning to wear heels. Before my interview, I read The Power of Body Language by Tonya Reiman. It was very helpful for all of my interviews, in my opinion.

Remember to ask every question that comes to mind, especially when they give you the opportunity to speak to Western students. The curriculum is not for everyone, and you must make that decision for yourself. In my experience, both as an interviewee and a student ambassador, the students at the question and answer sessions give extremely honest answers that will help you decide if Western is the right choice for you. Remember that you are interviewing the school as much as they are interviewing you.

I hope all of this helps. I am happy to answer any more questions you might have. Western is an amazing school that produces fantastic veterinarians and I'm glad you have the opportunity to visit us. 🙂

The only reason I'm flying into LAX it because it's cheaper.

Factor in the price to get from LAX to Western (time and money, not to mention stress) and it may not be.

PS If you have not driven in the LA area, I highly recommend you not rent a car.
 
I agree, driving from LAX to the campus/Pomona area is no joke. Easily 2 hours with normal traffic. Heavy traffic...up to 4 hours 🙁
 
I've been to LAX once and won't be back unless I have to. 🙂

When will Western send out more invites? I'm getting anxious. I hope there is enough time for those invited to plan and prepare...

I got my invite on Feb 3rd (~9pm EST). If I remember correctly, I picked the date, and interviewed on the 10th... all this after giving up completely on Feb 2nd. Surprise! So I had less than a week really to book flights, prep, pack.

Oof! When were the latest interviews they offered? I'm worried about a possible conflict with MN if they do take an interest... I may have to interview on the 3rd, 4th, 11th, or 12th.
 
I received my invite 5:30 pm California Time! ImaJerseyGirl, the last dates offered were Feb 12, 14 and 15.

First time I got to LA I got lost trying to get away from LAX. No kidding. And the highways are pretty intimidating at first even for someone who has driven a lot and is a confident driver. I would definitely recommend one of the "shuttle" services.
 
Wow it's been a long time since I was on here! Congrats everyone who got an interview, and for those who did not, never give up! I actually got in last year to Western third attempt, then chose to defer admission in August after finding out that my husband and I were expecting our first child (this February!) I will be starting this August with a 6 month old at home, if the timing goes well! Exciting times for everyone! If anyone has any questions about the interview process, or the school, let me know. I worked at a local oncology practice for 6 years and hosted several 3rd and 4th year students from Western which really helped me learn a lot about their program.
