Neuroanatomy lab anyone? How about quizzes on material that we have yet to learn?

Sounds like a plan to me!

<img border="0" alt="[Wowie]" title="" src="graemlins/wowie.gif" /> Oh my god!
Has anyone seen my amygdala?!?! Anyone?
It was here just a second ago....

Almonds....toasted almonds anyone?

Oh John,

Are you feeling a little neglected on your birthday? Well, Happy Birthday then! From your WesternU SDN crew. SO what happened tonight, I was set to go out? You and Yoda...somehow need to get things straight. Party! Friday night, not Sunday. Whatever, shoot the magic bullet through a brain like Dr. Suger-who's-your-daddy did today in neuro.

Robb,
Are we on for tomm nite? I will be doing Neuro today/tonight and tomm afternoon....but Sunday nite...I want to hang with my SDN crew...

...this week has been kinda rough for me...as I will explain tomm, but I am looking forward to tomm nite...

By the way..the toasted almond comment was in response to the amgadilla(sp?) comment from Mr.Warner....

See ya tomm!!

Tweety,

I can sort of answer your question. COMP does give about $8500 in subsidized loans total for both semesters, and about $16500, I believe, for each semester in unsubsidized loans. The rest come from private lenders in which the school is very generous with. I don't think you should have a problem, but just to be safe, contact the Financial Aid office. They are more than willing to help you out. I personally didn't need the additional private loans, $40,000 seems enough for me.

Tweety,
I had a parakeet named tweety when I was in Grammar school...but that is neither here nor there....

I agree with my buddy old pal RobbC..The loans that are availaable should be more than sufficient...and getting them as an in debt person should be fine...provided that your credit is in good standing...no deliquencies...etc....you should be fine!!

Ahhh.. yeah I was wondering where the reference to "almonds" was coming from. For a moment, I was thinking more along the terms of some signs for hydrogen cyanide (the bitter almond stuff). Yeah.. thalamus baby.

Is that knife that was next to the brain on Friday the same one Sugerman was using in his videos? I was imagining it was one of those Ka-Bar army knives. I watched that MRI/CT video around 3am Friday morning and I was amused by the fact that I could hear the train rumbling by in the video and almost "feel" the vibrations (those of you who don't live in Pomona don't get to experience this on a nightly basis). Did anyone notice the pointer he was using the last few videos.. it looked like a freaking tree branch, but I suppose it could've been a really big pipe cleaner.

Ahh.. the things I am amused by these days!

Lanny- I was wondering if anyone else noticed the train in the background on those videos. At first I had to look around to see if it was actually on the video or if I was actually hearing a train outside. Too funny.

Anyone for a sandwhich, I know where we could find a meat cutter...... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />

ahh yes another glorious week of studies in the great school of COMPblekistan where you must first wade though books upon books for hours only to decide what is relevant material to study. we value diligence and discipline because our students must basically decide what material is relevant and know it cold, on their own and ahead of time. and we do not entertain questions, because they are a sign of weakness. long live COMP.

i wonder how AZCOM is this time of year. 🙄

😛 mmmm....love me the chocolate covered amygdala....
Sometimes you feel like a nut...sometimes you don't...da da da <img border="0" alt="[Pity]" title="" src="graemlins/pity.gif" />

Adismo,

Do I sense a little negativism about our o' so lovely school? Oh come on now, everybody knows our school is the best, right? I hope? Just ask everyone else in the class how they feel...and I'm sure they're gonna change your attitude about our school, because you know EVERYONE loves our school!!!

Robb,
Not to contradict you...but I believe it is "Everybody Loves Raymond"...and oddly enough it takes place on Long Island...which is where I think I am gonna get booted back to...depending on the results of this week...

Ahh.....home...

Aunt Em, Am I REALLY back at home? Toto too?

Oh...I am sorry...that is Kansas....UHS...Hmmm

Was it really a bad dream? Am I really an MS1 at UHS...not lost in L.A.?

THIS POST IS ALL FOR ROBB!!!!

SammyK- Yeah, you remember that I actually live close enough to school to hear the train go by at night...

U mami!!!! count down have begin folks, 36 hours to the quiz!

Forgot to leave the book at school. If you still need to look at that page, I scanned it and put it on the class webpage as an adobe acrobat file so you can still check it out. If you still need the book, I'll try and bring it over Sunday or you can give someone like Elaine a call to get my #...

Picture of the Moment contributor of the week should go to Gwarner for his creativity in the most recent pic...

Hey,

I was wondering if you guys could help me.

I have all of my Stafford loan eligibility (did not take out any Stafford loans in undergrad). But here's the problem. My credit is in shambles. You see, because I didn't qualify for any federal or state aid in undergrad (I was not yet a U.S. citizen)I had no choice but to use mostly credit cards to pay for my undergrad. This was a last resort. If I had not done it I would not have been able to attend school and would not be where I am today.

But after using all that credit and not being able to jump right into the workforce to start paying it all back because I was applying to med school, I found myself getting behind and now my credit is completely ruined.

Here is my question. Will I be able to draw only Stafford Loans (which would suffice) which I've been told is approx. 8,500 Sub. & 36,667 Unsub and non-credit based?

Does COMP require to see my credit report for any reason?

Have maybe some of you had a similar problem and could offer some encouragement?

Thanks for any help you can offer. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />

COMP bound,

Sorry, but I don't have much advice to offer you. It seems like you're in a unique situation. You should contact the Financial Aid office and they might be able to give you some advice. Good luck.

Thanks Robbc, for your response.

Of course ultimately , I will be talking with them but first things are first.

There is something you can help me with though:

Have you been drawing the full Stafford Loan amounts which I've been told is approx. 8,500 Sub. & 36,667 Unsub and non-credit based?

Does COMP require to see my credit report for any reason?

🙂

hey duuuuuuuuude!
lanny, it's cool man, just give me the book when you see me (i don't even know if those pics help or not). Man, i thought first semester supposed to be the hardest semester we have? it's all a lie!! what's next, that our sacrum could unilaterally flex???? wait a minute, yes it can!!!
sorry bout the jibbirish y'all, tasted too much umami this morning.

RE: Funding for COMP

I have definitely gotten to know Stafford this first year at COMP. Also, there are alternative loans that come in handy. I think there will be more options for med school funding for my 2nd year though, especially in October. I am going to be applying for some special alternative loans next October. I am feeling pretty confident about 'em. The AOA convention is in Las Vegas next year and so I am hoping to get a Harrah's or MGM Scholarship. The Luxor and Excalibur grants look promising too....but the fees to apply for these loans can vary from 25 cents to several hundred dollars....I may have to be choosy about which ones to apply for.... Fortunately, these lenders don't look at credit reports and I don't think COMP does either.....

VISA, its everywhere you want to be.....

oh yeah, almost forgot, we have a test tomorrow....better get back to.....SNOOD

Can anyone tell me what the average GPA is for COMP students?

I am a new admit and I am wondering what the GPAs are for MS1,2,3, and 4 respectively(whether they go up, down, or flatline). Whatever information that you can spare will be greatly appreciated.

I just want to know exactly what I am in for.

Thanks in advance!

Your kidding right? MGM, Harrah's--hey win some for me.

No, seriously folks--I could really use your help--Melancholy where are you? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />

COMP BOUND: Stafford loans are need based, not credit based. As long as you did not default on a stafford loan in undergrad, you should be fine. COMP is very liberal about applying the formulas... they know that you can't work and therefore can't come up with money on your won. As far as the alternative loans, they do run a credit check on you (I believe).
Are you going to be able to pay down some of your credit card debt before you get to school? Financial aid is enough to live on, but it may be hard to pay your credit card bills...
Bottom line, don't worry. You will get your staffords!

Hey COMP Bound,
sorry I didn't apply for any Stafford loans.. I was sorta waiting for my other peers to answer since I can't really provide any advice on something I don't know about. :/

Hello teloola,

No, I have not ever taken out any Stafford loans.

Regarding my credit card debt I'm afraid the "damage is done". The thing about it is when I graduated I found out that no one wants to hire a pre-med who is applying to med school (at least at the rate of pay, let's say someone with a business degree might draw). 🙁 I have not made enough and was unable to make the minimum payments required. So the credit is past redemption. "Paying down" anything is virtually impossible.

So what it seems like you're saying is that basically the money will be there solely from the Staffords to pay for school, rent & food but perhaps not much else. Is that right?

Have you yourself found that the Stafford loans have been all you needed?

Have you heard of any other COMP students who began school with bad credit and have successfully advanced through school?

Thanks anyway, Melancholy. I asked for you specifically because you seem to be very helpful to us COMP students who have yet to matriculate.

How is it you didn't have to take out any Staffords? You weren't on "Who wants to Be a Millionaire" were you? <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" />

On a lighter note...

Anatomy is done....final grades are out...and thank God...

I passed....it was touch and go for a while there...as I have found that anatomically I seem to be DUMB....but alas...through the Grace of God..I have been spared from the cornfields of Nebraska.

It was a perilous journey....

Starting with the bombming of WTC..wondering if I should be looking for lost friends..or a brachial plexus the week before the 1st exam..to various flesh/body wounds...and culminating in a final left me with double eye infections and a 2 week flu...

but alas....I made it through...

Thank you God!!!

Yosh- double eye infection? that probably didn't help for any practicals. Congrats for making it through buddy.. I'm glad to hear you won't be up in the cornfields. I wonder how the rest of our classmates did (I recall Leo making a joke about Nebraska). I had no idea the anatomy grades were out though.. hmmmm. Any clue if it was a generous or moderate curve?

COMP Bound- Why I didn't take out Stafford Loans? Need-based. I sort of have a family of doctors and my parents, always worrying about the future, always saved up and planned financially well for school. That being said, I don't ask for birthday/Christmas presents because I get a big check twice a year which leaves my hand shortly to be passed on to Western. 😕 Ouch.. speaking of checks, rent is due...

Wow, Melancholy--family's got money, and you're so darn well adjusted too  😀

Yosh:
Glad to hear that you have slayed the anatomy demon. Pray for me, I am taking my turn tomorrow (the dreaded 20 question makeup, essay exam...) <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />

if anatomy was a demon, Neuro is Beelzebub himself.

Good call there....not too shabby

It was ROUGH ROUGH....OMM is gonna suck too..who the hell remembers Rib Dx?

Not I...as it will be a Long Long Long weekend

Hey Fellow COMP Bitchers and Moaners:
The MSII's will be playing a little beach volleyball this weekend in Santa Monica. Any MSI's interested? <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" />

Not this time. Some of us actually hit up the SOMA formal. And also, a number of MS1ers are going to bike or run the LA Marathon. So pretty much the social part of the weekend has been filled. But if anything else comes up for other events, keep us posted. Have fun! 🙂 🙂

And after a hiatus of sorts...the C.O.W.S are back.....

Just reminder to all the city folk, even Leo says the cows are fast.....

all this talk about COWS reminds me of chino hills mornings... inhale that glorious morning air. 😀

(technically ,isnt COWS the slower part?) 😛

COWS is the FASTER part...tells which side will have the "faster" reflex...c'mon now...

Do we not know our Bo-Vine?

Is school almost done?

I think my right leg is shorter than my left...or I am just right sacral extended? Who the hell knows?

Thoracic pump anyone? I'll do ya one better...

Pelvic Release....

after that...I feel like someone owes me Dinner and Drinks...

oops...

i stand corrected <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />

The COWS are evil....Sam and I have been telling people for months now....and you will all see...it was no joke...

It is RECKONING DAY!

Hey fellow classmates,

seeing how u all are such great role models and guides........I have one more question to ask u.....How does third and fourth year work, I mean can u do ur rotations anywhere? do u still attend classes? when and where are exams?
Do you not necessarily stay in Pomona those last two years? this is kind of out of curiosity and kind of for considerations for future plans with housing etc.....Thanks all!!!

H Town Comp:
Your third and fourth year are spent "out in the field." There are certain weekends that you have to come back to campus to take classes, but for the most part you are not in school.
Each year the way that rotations is set up slightly changes. I believe now that you are set up in a given area (say, southern california) and you stay there for 6 months or a year (I am not sure which). Durring that time, you rotate from hospitals and private doctors offices in the area. It is possible to rotate to areas other than southern california if you want. Some of the second years may have more updated and accurate information. The only thing that the first years were told is that you must have a 3.0 to pick your rotations (beneath that, COMP chooses for you!)
Hope the info is helpful!

Hey Teloola-
Didn't get a chance to talk to you lately, but hope you're doin' alright!

Thanks Teloola, That's the info. i was looking for!!! Appreciate the thorough response, u all are great..

I didn't want to bring up anything remotely negative because I like to keep a positive tone, but I thought this thread might be interested to read for some folks.

<a href="http://www.studentdoctor.net/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=5;t=002340" target="_blank">SDN thread</a>

Every class at every school will have students who aren't perfect fits with the school or students that may be unhappy with the school or conditions for one reason or another. I just wanted to emphasize to try and stay positive and make the best of each situation as it is presented... attitude and composure mean a lot... now and for the rest of your life. (Ok this is sounding kinda dreary.. sorry.)

Now.. go and make merry!
