B.J. Thomas??? I prefer Hooked on a Feeling....but R-A-N-D-O-M?????????

I agree.....where is this going?

Although I wonder at questioning the randomness of our thread at this point all of a sudden....

But now I remember that our discussions of cows and pidgeons had a distinct purpose...

Still following the KCOM Dismissal thread? I guess someone mentioned attrition rates there. To me, this is a little more confirmation that these rates can definitely vary from school to school and year to year. Just remember we're all in it together.

I did check out interviewfeedback.com and I didn't find a huge slew of negative comments there but I did leave remarks here and there. I had completely forgotten about that site since I used it to prep for my interview at COMP last year, but it was good to refresh my memory of what it was like to be interviewing at schools. Hopefully we can be even more encouraging and helpful with interviewees and those who were accepted!

Spring break is here.. whee! Time to go to my AA meeting..

Hey,

Do any of you guys know about the laptop issue? I was reading back to some year 2000 posts and they were saying that the school buys the laptops for you. Is that still true? I'm wanting to get one in the next few days.

COMP Bound,

It used to be that the school required that you rent an IBM Thinkpad from the school at an unreasonable price, but due to the numerous concerns made by the DO2004 class, our class had the option to purchase our own laptops. My suggestion to you is that you wait until the last possible minute (late this summer just before classes begin). Technology is moving quickly, and if you buy too soon, your laptop will not be top notch once class is in session. Remember, this is going to be the laptop you will be using for the next 4 years, so wait and invest in a high performance laptop later so that it can last these next 4 years. I know of some people who purchased laptops at the minimum requirements (ie a 500Mhz), and in 2 years that 500Mhz will be like a 233Mhz now (obsolete for many applications). If you have any more questions just leave us a post.

Yeah, like RobbC mentioned, wait for awhile before purchasing a laptop. I think waiting till the summer time would be a good idea although you can do your homework now and research current laptop specs/prices AND see if there are any trends mentioning that prices will drop in the future. I often find that when you have a couple months to do research on computer prices, you can sit and wait for the prices to get better before making your move.

Whether or not laptops are required, I think they end up being an integral part of most of our classmates' lives as powerpoint presentation notes, study aids, announcements, and e-mails are all usually done on your laptop. There is a computer lab which usually doesn't get full, but it's not always as convenient to go there and sometimes it is convenient to have your laptop in class for various reasons (including a little entertainment).

Thanks guys. I've come upon a real good opportunity to get a fully loaded laptop but the catch is I must get it within the next week, or bye-bye opportunity.

Here are the major specs:
1.2Ghz Pentium III 133 Frontside Bus
1024MB Memory
20GB Hard Drive (user removable-hot swap)
CD-RW/DVD Combo
250 MB Zip Drive
Integrated 56k Modem (built-in RJ-11 jack)
Integrated 10/100 LAN (built-in RJ-45 jack)
MiniPCI Wireless LAN 802.11b
2 PCMCIA Slots
2 USB
IEEE 1394 Firewire, External Monitor, TV Out....
Automatic Voltage Adjustment
Auto Air Adapter
Windows 2000
5.49lbs Weight

I mean this probably has the most up-to-date features available. My main concern is that the COMP facilities will have some weird hookup (jack) or something....what do you guys think? Would I be safe in getting this?

COMP Bound,

That sounds like a killer computer! It's more than enough for what you need at COMP. Basically, having a fast processor, lots of memory, and a big screen are things I'd look for. We use typical network ethernet connections, so that answers your "weird hook-up question."

Keep in mind though, as mentioned in either this post or other COMP posts, that the later you wait for a computer, the better. I know it's cool to have something new to have, but you're going to find something with more goodies at the same price come August.

Hope it helps,
Eric, MSII

Cool. Thanks Eric. I hear you about the timing and all. If I could wait I certainly would but the money won't be there if I do wait....

I know that in 4 years everything will at least triple i.e. power, speed, memory etc. But I guess the question is will anything on this laptop become obsolete to the point of rendering it unusable.

It should in the very least get me through , shouldn't it? What da ya think?

this is the worse spring break i've ever had!!! and it's pretty much the last spring break i'll ever have.... AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHH.
2.0 = D.O just somehow doesn't sound all that funny anymore.

Good luck on the test folks.

I agree with the Luv Dawg....my ass in gonna be in a sling....

I dunno....about this anymore....STRESS!

Hope you didn't have too much margarita on your breath, Puppyluv.. or was that just food that had margarita flavoring on it? Haha.

I've still been following that KCOM message thread about "dismissal from medical school" and wow, it seems to still be going.

Anyway, gosh darn it I am tired.. if I can wake up, I am looking forward to getting worked on in OMM.. see ya.

You know....even after that test I'm still suffering from a tension headache....

Where is one of those triptans when you need them? 😛

I guess party this Friday night huh? Better this Friday night than next Friday night definitely.. I'll be tired after ICM anyway..

2 neuro exams down...two more to go...

ugghhh

The Neuro ICM was a good experience actually.. it may not be too rewarding to some, but depending on what doctors you get to work with, some like to share a ton of clinical pearls (both neurological and non-) and once more classmates decide to leave early, you have the volunteer patients and docs all to yourself. I had a doc (I don't think he will be there on Wednesday, but there are probably others like him) who went through quite a bit of OMT with us and how he used it in the practice for diagnosing and treating a lot of his patients. Afterwards, we all got treated too. 🙂 I thought it was a good to stick around overall. I'm sure if there are certain clinical docs/profs you want to spend more time talking to, you'll get plenty of attention so it's good for that as well. *Just don't forget to sign out when you leave like some of our fellow classmates did.. or not even show up at all. (not a good idea to skip)

On a more depressing note, the amt of studying this week was minimal.. this weekend will be spent working on that darn project and then finally getting to catching up from last week. Good luck, folks!

I will let you know how ICM is this Weds....I can't say that I am looking forward to it....but we'll see....

Neuro III, Monday....8am

be there...or you'll be somewhere else?

Hi melancholy.... Just wanted to thank you for the wonderful response to the bashing going on on SDN....

Hope things are going well for you guys.... I met some of your fellow classmates at the AAO Convocation this year 🙂

Good luck the rest of the year.... 😎

Hey Popoy,
Thanks for stopping by... it's been awhile since your presence has graced the long COMP thread.. heh. Actually, I did talk to a few classmates who went to the convocation.. one of them had an entertaining tale during a demonstration where he ended up with the completely opposite diagnosis from what the professor/demonstrator had gotten.. heh. Well, practice makes perfect!

its all about the benzocaines.

Are we almost there Papa Smurf?

So close....yet neuro has a way of making it seem oooh...so far away...

It seems like weeek of long nites is on its way....oh the joy...

Does this board seem any different? I am not noticing anything as of yet??

Hey 2005'ers! I tried posting this in the 2006 thread but no one seemed to reply... 🙁 Maybe some of you can help me out with these concerns...

ACCEPTED!

I just got my letter today. WU/COMP looks great for me.

I have two concerns, however. First, I noticed that many of the attainted residencies are in primary care or medicine. At this point I'm interested in surgery; will it be hard to obtain a surgery residency from WU/COMP? In general, how are the surgery rotations?

Also, I havent heard much research being performed at WU/COMP. Is there a research coordinator or website where I can find what labs are working on what? I believe that research enhances one's chances for some residencies, am I correct?

Thanks for all of your input - I know that I havent said much on this board but I've been quietly reading all of your responses from the corner...and am thankful for all of your help!!

Hi Careofme-

First of all, congrats on your acceptance! I am a second year here at COMP and I will be happy to try and answer some of your questions...

First of all, it is true that many attained residencies are in primary care but for two main reasons. There are many many more Family Practice Residency Programs available, not just in California, but nation-wide. Also, there has been an increasing need for family practice doctors, particularly in rural and underserved areas (there has been a massive shortage for quite some time now) and I believe this is why many med students have a propensity toward this type of residency program. Other reasons for their choices may be number of years spent in residency, lifestyle, making room to have families (this may be more of an issue since the average age for incoming freshman to DO schools is usually around 25 or 26 years of age...a time when most start thinking about starting families).

However, despite all this, I do know of many (particularly at COMP) who are interested in many specialties. I believe there is a high percentage in my class who want to go into Neurology and PEDS, including myself!) If you look at the match list for the last two years, you will see a diverse list of students matching into a variety of specialties. I believe we had at least 8 match into top ER residencies and a high proportion of students this year match into Internal Medicine (I know of 4 who will be doing IM at USC in the fall).

So, if you want to do Surgery and that is the type of Residency Program you want to attain, then go for it! Just remember, post-graduate training in specialties can be very competitive, but if you take the right route into obtaining that goal then you will have no problem.

Which comes to your next question, research. COMP is not a research institution (as most DO schools are not) but I do know that COMP is shifting towards this direction (I believe melancholy touched upon this in a previous post in another thread). I would love to see COMP do more research and I believe it is already happening. In the meantime, there are various opportunites to do research at other institutions, the faculty and the clincians here are very good at helping students out in this department. If you are interested in surgery, you should look into doing research, as most competitive specialty programs not so much require it, but really just recommend it so that it will make you a competitive applicant. I, too, am currently looking into research opportunities to enhance my CV when applying for Pediatric residencies. I do know of a few professors and faculty clinicans on campus who are conducting some research and are always looking for students to get involved.

As far as the surgery rotations, I won't know until a few months from now when I have my first one at the teaching hospital we are affiliated with, but I have heard great things about these rotations. I heard you learn an awful lot!

I hope this answered some of your questions and if you have any more, feel free to ask any of us here!

Good luck and again, congrats!

Hope everyone else out there is surviving, just a few more weeks to go! And first years, Neuro is almost over! Hang in there! Hey Melancoly! how ya doing? I can't believe school is almost over and we still have not met!

Kira, MSII

Thanks soooo much for your comments. I am glad to hear that there are reserach opps. available since I have been doing so much of it lately I feel its a shame to stop now... I hope that there is someone I can talk to when I get there that can put in the right direction.

Thanks again for your help!!

Careofme

....Everyone talks about "Summer" research; is there no research possible during the year? Rather, are MSI'ers too busy to do research during the year?

Careofme

that's right, all your time will be spent in the anatomy lab! ...first year is tough and you need to get through it...just focus on that and then think about research in the summer. I don't mean to scare you, but you will be wishing you had a lot more free time on your hands!

Hi Kiki,
Did you happen do participate in one of those cultural dances awhile ago? Anyway, I was wondering if there were any MS-II's crazy enough to do research during the year... just curious, that's all.

CareofMe- Remember, in addition to schoolwork, there are plenty of extracurriculars and organizations to become involved in. I think one aspect of being a good candidate for residencies includes being well-rounded.. so if research isn't always possible, there are plenty of other things to become involved in during the school year and summer that can definitely make an impression when it comes around to applying for residencies and even jobs I'd think in the future.

MSI's,

I just wanted to let you know that the Arizona physicals are coming up April 27th. They were probably my best experience of my first year. You were literally thrown 80 - 100 athletes to do physicals on. It's great b/c there are docs standing by to help out and they'll try to teach you as well.

Things you'll never learn your 1st year, but from AZ are hernia checks & EKG placement. I really wish I didn't have OMM Written b/c I would go too.

Night life was cool too, the AZCOM students were real friendly and wanted to take us out. I went to a bar one night and then a club the next night.

In order to go, you must be a member of the Sports Med Club and have attended one of our sports physical workshops.

So you better go so I can live vicariously through you on this trip!

Eric

I had no idea about these physicals...I will have to look into this...

Neuro is fianlly done...or is it??

All four tests SUCKED...and the 2nd test is the final BIG PUSH.....???

Hmmm....apparently we weren't all reading off the same page on this one...

Tomm is OMM written final and then OMM pratical on Monday.....

NO REST FOR THE WICKED...and apparently we are WICKED!

Actually, I don't remember there being a requirement that you had to be a sports med club member to go. I know we are recruiting any MS-I's interested in going.. mentioning that the requirement be the sports physical workshop which is now WEDNESDAY at 5pm, not Tuesday as we previously stated. Think of the AZ trip as getting a ton of reps doing physicals as well as learning new experiences... and that's not including the fun experience of going on a road trip, meeting AZCOM students, meeting other Western PA's, and seeing what life is around there.

NEURO is DONE!!!

My trip to AMSTERDAM for the summer is ON!!!!

Next weekend is Cochilla Concert too....desert..Oasis, Prodigy, Souxie and her Banshees...I can't wait...I love being a med student....

Two days of fun...all for free...

Oh yeah...we gotta help people there too or something....

As far as OMM....I recall rearranging the letters and yelling out "MOM" for help

How was the exam you ask? I say Sherman...as in Sherman TANK....

Hey passed neuro...OMM was another story...

Nucleas Propulsis anyone????

Is Coachella the same weekend as the AZ trip.. and OMAC? It sounded like they might need a few more people for OMAC actually.. I know we're all tired.

As far these weekend trips, we have quizzes when we get back.. was this the case last year? Hopefully the quizzes won't be a total bomb. This might be a touchy week... hope it works out.

Western U recently redid its website.. looks a bit nicer and also has a new area for prospective students! It's still in the works, but I suppose they are addressing a few issues here and there that were brought up before.

Oh yeah.. congrats to Dr. Cundari and that other COMP grad who were recently appointed to the Osteopathic Medical Board for California and his rise to professorship. There were also a couple other profs who finally made asst. prof.. what were they before? This includes Bales and Redding.. good for them!

3:52am update-
Time to sleep. I must be getting old (or just tired from this week)... I raised my arms up to stretch and I heard something around my anterior chest wall crack. I guess we can call that anterior ribs exhalation somatic dysfunction (they were stuck down till I treated them to some good ol' fashioned manipulation!)

I dunno who planned all of this...but apparently everything is happening on the same weekend. I would have gone to do the Arizona thing, and the OMAC but I signed up for Cuchilla....so I am off to the desert...
I did this thing last Sat with high school kids who came to learn about OMM....which was cool...I wish things were planned a little better and didn't conincide.

Hmmm...speaking of planning....

Neuro final on Thursday...OMM written on Friday...OMM practical on Monday...then NO EXAMS for 3 1/2 weeks....

GOOD CALL!!! Why space things out and give us a fighting chance???

I am BENT....SIDEBENT AWAY..away from this school!!!

I think PCHAT is doing something this weekend too. Hey, maybe Martin will give us a nice big group project that will require mandatory group attendance for Behavioral Sciences? That would make OMAC, Arizona physicals, Cochilla, PCHAT, etc... We do love our ability to cluster schedule, perhaps that is related to a cluster headache? 😛

Has anyone seen a group of Monkeys on the loose? If you have, contact Dr. Martin as no doubt they were needed for an upcoming exam question....

Sammy,
As usual....you continue to amaze me with your wit and humor....TOO FUNNY!
I am off to get some more OMM in, as I don't get to go until later this afternoon..and you KNOW how I like to drag these things out....

Ugghh, I don't wanna "Dome the Diaphragm"

Are there any current 3rd or 4th years on here who can tell me about WU/COMP's rotations?

I received the info page when I interviewed regarding the rotations, but I was curious to know how open they are to students setting up their own rotations in distant locations (for example and MGH or Johns Hopkins, etc.). I saw that WU/COMP does have them listed on the Rotations/Preceptor list but it seems like no one really uses them (or hasnt filled out an evaluation).

I suppose I'm just trying to guage where the majority of 3rd and 4th years do their rotations and if the administration is open to students doing away rotations....

Careofme

hehe remember me? yup i'm still around...just haven't posted in a few months. glad to see some familiar names still online...i guess our thread still lives 🙂 one more month to go...and SUMMER congrats to everyone that got in this year! enjoy this summer to the max and we will see ya mid-august. time to study some psych.

halcyon

How bout that Biostat's project?

I find that the mode of people who wonder on a daily basis where Martin keeps all the monkey cages is approximately 5. I also find the mean of people who thoroughly enjoy having sudden projects assigned over a busy weekend at 0.6, and that is due to incorrectly filling out the scantron. The standard deviations don't really matter, but that is because the BMI of the monkey's whose mother aged 20-25 directly correlates with their ability to show up on random exam questions.

Less than one month to go people.

Arrgh.. sorry I haven't been writing anyone back. I seem to fall asleep right after I get home and not waking up till the middle of the night. Gets kinda annoying.. hopefully I can reset that this weekend.

I decided that I'd be going to OMAC instead of the AZ road trip so I could get some other things done that are really important (like getting such much-needed maintenance for my car).

How was the weekend? Must've been fun for all (or at least relaxing).

Haha I was reading this message thread on the five states you can't practice in without having done an AOA-approved internship..

Message thread link here

In this post by SweatyPaul, the paragraph had a single word which brought amusement into my Sunday night..

"Resolution 42 allows an individual, who meets some incredibly draconian standards, to get their ACGME accredited residency accredited by the AOA. Even then, those choosing to get AOA approval have extra work to complete the AOA accreditation."

Can you find the word? 🙂
