I just got the secondary from these guys. They pre-screen, don't they? If so, I'll take that as a good sign.

You got the secodary, so you're one step closer. Someone mentioned they are having record number of applicants at the allopathic schools, which means naturally the osteopathic schools will as well - maybe? Good luck!

Interview for December 6th... it seems so far from now. Does anyone else have an interview then? I'm flying into LAX and was thinking of taking the Metrolink Train to Pomona. Its only like 13 bucks roundtrip and drops you off a block from the school. Has anyone used the train before? Is the train reliable. I defiantly don't want to late.

I took the metro linktoday!!! It was really easy..except that I figured there would be taxis at the train station waiting...but there weren't any. But then I just called 411 and found a taxi to take me to my hotel. It takes like 45 minutes from LA. (I took from the LA train station) My interview is tomorrow ahh!

I'm just curious, why do we have over 200 postings for the AZCOM discussion thread while Western only has 50 some postings? Are people actually more excited about AZCOM over Western?

What is the approx turnaround for an interview invite after your secondary is complete? I have another interview in Cali and would like to make one trip instead of two but I need to buy my ticket soon. (I was complete two weeks ago) Any insight would be great!

complete: 9/14
received invitation: 10/05
interview date: November 15, 29, or dec 6
im OOS

🙄

possibly? I am because I was accepted to AZCOM already. Whereas my secondary from Western is STILL MIA after being sent to me on July 21st, me finally finding out why I have not heard from them last week and having them resend it to me!... I would LOVE to have an interview/acceptance from Western, but I need that secondary first!

anyone that interviewed on sept 27th...

have you heard anything yet?

i'm dying waiting around for the mail...

Good luck on your interview! I mapquested the train station in Pomona to Western and I think it said .1 miles. Can you walk from the station to the university or should I take a cab?

yes you could totally walk from the station to the campus. In fact, you'll be able to check out downtown Pomona and walk down the antique row and the entire length of the campus. It should take about 10mins walking leisurely.

So I had my interview, and they asked me how many allopathic and how many osteopathic schools I applied to. 😱 The number of allo>>>>osteo so I hope they don't hold it against me. Anyone else asked this question?

yup, they asked me that. but i lied. 👍

That's a standard question we ask. Doesn't mean a whole lot. Honestly, interviewers don't care if you applied MD and DO. Bottom line...you want to be a physician and you want to hedge your bets. BFD. Sometimes we just like to put you on the spot. Hell, if you're willing to lie about applying MD with the DO schools, ask yourself, "What else are you willing to lie about?" Just shows your personal character qualities. I highly suggest an about face.

I should know something about this...I was an interviewer.

Tomorrow I will be complete at Western for three weeks and would like to know if anybody else is in the same boat waiting for an interview invite? It's been pretty dead on sdn lately in terms of news from Western.

I have a quick question for you guys who got interview invites. Does western send you the invite by email or by snailmail?

They send interview invites by email. Decision letters are sent via snailmail.

I interviewed 10/11, I emailed them and they said my decision letter was mailed out last Friday... I live in CA so it should arrive today or tomorrow... gah the suspense is killing me o.o;;;

Sorry double post, but just got my letter a few minutes ago.... omg I got so scared when I saw the mail and saw that my decision letter from WesternU was only a small envelop... esp since I didn't feel so hot about my interview... but it was an acceptance!! 😀

So yeah just a heads up so you guys know what to expect =)

interviewed 10/11
AdCom reviewed on 10/17
decision mailed 10/19
letter arrived 10/23 (I live 20min away from WesternU)

They totally asked me that question and I told the truth even though MD>>>DO (20 to 10)... I thought it looked bad afterwards but I was accepted!!!

Is anyone else interviewing on Nov 29? Has anyone contacted any of the students from the list Western provides you with to inquire about staying with a current student during your interview? If so, are you going to stay with a student or in a hotel? Peace and good luck to all who inspire to be physicians!😉

I've been complete at Western for about 3.5 weeks, so I decided to call and see what's up. They said that a decision has been made and I will hear in a week or so (she wouldn't tell me anything over the phone). I guess that's another rejection for me. It seems like she would have told me it I was invited to interview. Don't they send interview invites via email anyway?

Damn . . . this sucks 🙁

don't lose all hope yet, they're not supposed to give any sort of info about your status over the phone or coming in

for anyone else who has gotten in already...how many plan on attending?

Hey, I'm right there with you. I thought my application would be a lock for at least an interview at Western and now it's been exactly 3.5 weeks and I haven't heard a thing from them. Just wanted to let you know you're not alone.

OMG I should get my decision this tuesday! I hope it's good news. Good luck to all the 10/18 interviewees!!! 🙂

i had my inter iew yesterday, it went really well, want asked any wierd ethical questions or anything. Ocerall i was pretty impressed with what they had to say and the cirriclum looks strong. I thought the capus itself was visiually worn down looking and the omm lab looked old, but it looked like the students all enjoy the school despite those negatives

i'm interviewing on Nov 29th as well. I saw the list of students, but looks like most of them are like 20-25 mins away from the campus. Also, I may get there on the 28th afternoon or something, and what am I going to do for the rest of the day, if I stay with the medstudent? - i'm sure they have to study, and I wont have a car, and I wont knwo what the hell to do. lol

So, unless anyone have suggestions, I think i'll be staying at a hotel...that way I'm not bothering medstudents from studying, and I can just chill in the hotel or walk around and come and go into and out of the hotel as i please (without needing to ring doorbell, etc).

Any advice about Western's student hosting is appreciated!

Aren't you guys concerned about Western's extremely low budget for room and board? They expect you to pay rent and eat for 9 or 10 months on $11K . Do you know how expensive rent is in Southern California? Perhaps non of you are concerned about having 1 roommate and living in a dumpy place or living in a decent place and having 2 roommates. Is no one even considering how they are going to pay for room and board with the low budget Western has set so you can't borrow any more than what is pre-determined by them...which is insufficient in my opinion.

a lot of students told me they live in the neighboring towns which are nicer and cheaper.

Generally, SoCal is a pretty expensive area to live in; the COL is high. Also, the traffic, especially near LA, is pretty unfriendly. Nevertheless, I'm sure you can get by on the budget. When I lived in SoCal, I managed to squeek by on around that much. I think it will be tight though.

Yeah, one would have to share an apt with 1 or 2 others. I don't understand Western's logic behind such a low room/board budget in Socal. They must expect you to have roommates.

By the way, one of the above poster stated that there are cheaper places near by... there aren't. I'm from that area. So, I know.

I'm waiting on word as well. Only been two weeks so I guess no news is good news so far. Who knows?

How did the interview go at Western. What did they ask you and what was the format of the interview.

What was your impression of the school.

Thanks,
k

see my KCUMB vs Western thread, i wrote a lot about what i thought about western in there.

As for the interview itself, it was pretty smooth for me, almost everyone in my interview group said they were not asked any ethical or moral dilemma questions. most of the questiosn focused on why medicine, why do, your personal motivation, what will be your biggest challenge in med school, for me i was asked why i applied to a school across the country, we also talked about sports, we talked about westerns commitment to do more research (i brought it up), i talked about the impression the dean gave me in his speech, which was better than i had about the school before the day began. I told them honestly i wasnt seriously considering the school before the interview but now its a top player.

The key for the interview, imo is brutal honesty. .the interviewers hear the same thing from EVERYONE primary care this, blah blah that.. trust me, be brutally honest with yourself and the adcoms, they seea lot of potential students and they know whose not being frank with them. I said some thigns in my interviews that people on this forum would say is not a good idea ( for example, i said primary care interests me but id be lying if i told you id definately go into it, they said we respect your honesty, all of them said that). Ive gotten 2 acceptances going this way and hoping for a third from western

if you have any questions feel free to PM me. if i get into western as well, itll be a tough choice for me between them and kcumb

Did anyone send their LORs with Interfolio? It does not show up as an option for me...

Can anyone tell me where the core rotation sites at Western will be? does it mean you have to rotate at all of the core rotation sites or do you get to pick a few from a pool of the core rotation sites? just wondering....thanks!

There is a lottery list that contains permutations of those sites. You will rotate at some of those, but not all. Obviously you just look through the list and pick the tracks that contain the ones that you want and hope you get it.

4th year is all setup by you.

EDIT: updated list: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showpost.php?p=4652947&postcount=11

WOW! Thanks so much for the links. That was VERY helpful. For some reason when I did a search, that post didn't come up...

Do you know if during your 4th year, the hospitals you set can be at ucla or usc or even nyu? is 4th year all electives and you can choose anywhere u want?

Wherever you want for the most part, obviously its your responsibility to contact the hospitals and get in. There are a couple institutions (UMD comes to mind) that won't take rotating DO students. But basically, wherever you can setup a rotation, you can go. Many students rotate through UCLA, USC, etc... as well as NYU (looking at our database just now, I see 4 student reviews of their experience at NYU MC in the last 2 years).

So there is a database of where everyone has gone in the past? Is that something that all students can look at before they pick preferences before the lottery?

And UMD= Maryland?

Just found out that the committee still hasn't reached a decision on my application yet and it's been over four weeks now... I am not sure what they are hung up about on me but it might be my lack of DO experience (but I have more than plenty MD shadowing experience) or my 3.2 GPA for undergrad and grad school. Is it out of my hands? I hate that feeling.

oh awesome! thank you so much! i didn't know that Western is that flexible, but that's great to hear that they are! im interviewing there in december so I hope it goes well! has anyone done a rotation at hopkins? how come i can't find this information on the western univ website?

The database shows 4 feedback entries for hopkins (PM&R, 2 rads, and a sports med). That doesn't mean there haven't been more, that's just how many have left feedback. You can't find the information because it isn't public, it is only accessible to current students.

is 3rd year set up by the school?

Yes, for the most part. There are like 200 tracks that you rank and are matched into based on preference. Everyone will match into their own track, which is one of many permutations of the core rotation sites. You have some amount of freedom in where you want to end up rotating, but ultimately you are choosing from predetermined tracks at the core rotation sites.

So there is a database of where everyone has gone in the past? Is that something that all students can look at before they pick preferences before the lottery?

And UMD= Maryland?

Yes, there is a database of student feedback regarding rotations, see above. Again it is not all-inclusive, it just shows the feedback for those students who chose to leave feedback.

And yes, UMD=U Maryland. In the past (I don't know anymore) it has been identified as not allowing DO students to rotate through their system (however you can match there).

Realize that it was never in your hands to begin with.

Secondly, don't worry about lack of DO experience, most applicants have none anyway and still get accepted without problems.

3.2 is a bit low for the average matriculant, but if the rest of your app was solid, no worries.

Lastly, sometimes they just take longer than they say. Don't sweat it too much, they'll get to you eventually.

Remember, 90% of COMP interviewees are eventually accepted.

yeah, i saw the thread about that with the table for in-state, out-of-state, etc... do we have additional sources? sounds kinda high? its wonderful news but in my head i'm thinking 'too good too be true'

multiple sources (comp website, brochures) say that about 600ish get interviewed and around 200 matriculate, so it might be safe to assume that a large majority are accepted. how large a majority?

i just wish there were more publications that confirmed that 90% post-interview acceptance...

House:
correct me if im wrong but i thought they said that the admissions board gets together the following wednesday to review the interviewees on a decision?

:luck:best of luck, everyone
