Western/COMP Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I called and it turns out that I'm about the biggest idiot in the world. I can barely say this I'm so mad at myself, but I wrote down the wrong due date for my second deposit. It was due March 1st and I sent it March 15th (the first was due January 15th). Needless to say, they released my spot.

Has anyone ever heard of this situation turning out okay? The Director is gone until Monday, so I can't do anything right now, but I could sure use some reassurance. I can't believe I messed THIS up...🙁

You should join the facebook group!

Somebody in there had something similar happen. I can't find the post, but if I recall correctly, he/she was able to call admissions, talked to the admission director and/or dean, and had the decision reversed.

Please dont worry too much about it/get down on yourself! We all make mistakes and I bet this will turn out ok for you ---you got into med school, CONGRATS! 🙂

If they haven't filled the class yet, you probably have a good chance of getting your spot back........

Thank you soooo much. That was really, truly, helpful 🙂 I kind of feel like I can breath again.

I just wouldn't be able to handle FINALLY getting into medical school and then losing it over something like this. I'm sure all the neurotic pre-medders out there can feel my pain

Okay, I'm calm. Yay for SDN and awesome future classmates!

Yeah, as Kevin Baker already posted, this also happened to someone else in our class. If you join the FB group- the student was 'Steven Bui'. Maybe you can even FB msg him to see how he approached it with the Admissions Director? The good news is he was able to get his spot back so there's hope for you yet! Let's hope we have an understanding Admissions Director and that the class isn't too full yet!

Best of luck! :luck:

Every single day, I say the same thing. "The letter HAS to be here today... it just has to!" and then I go to the mailbox and.... nothing! I'm going to give myself an ulcer.... Maybe tomorrow!:xf:

So, did anyone from the Feb 10th interviews get a letter yet?

I got my letter on Monday.

It seems Western adcom is way behind on reviewing recent interviews.

Well, I called today and spoke with Tia. She said that they only were able to send some of the letters from Feb 10 interviews last Friday. They are hoping to have the rest of the letters from that date approved and they will "hopefully be there sometime next week."

So likely, those that interviewed on the 24th have to wait for awhile, too.

Hopefully, they've started reviewing Feb 24th people today, I'll call in tomorrow.

Edit: Also, is next week Spring's break for Western?

Haha, thanks for letting me know. This looks like the last chance for adcom to meet/get things finalized (before heading off into a 1 week break). Yikes....

Hi everyone, I wanted to ask if anyone knows about the difference between the deferral acceptance or alternate list. Does the deferral acceptance still have the same chance as an alternate to get into this current class of 2015? I read last years thread and some people were accepted into the 2014 class while they were given the deferral acceptance for 2015. Any insight on this would help! Thanks! 🙂

Just for head up for people who interviewed on Feb 24th, the mails/decisions are finally sent!

I was accepted this Friday via phone call at around ~3pm PST. The counselor said all the letters are finally signed by the Deans and sent, and you guys should be receiving them next week depending where you live. Hang tight. They finally caught up to all the recent interviews (ie Feb 24th). Additionally, there is also another interview date on March 31st, so look out for that, too.

I am also going to turn down the acceptance. After some heavy debating back and forth and talking to current students and what not, I decided to matriculate at AZCOM based on various reasons. I hope someone will be able to get off the WL +1 spot! :luck:

Farewell 😍

I called today to check on my status and they told me the class is full. For anyone still waiting for an interview invite at Western - unfortunately, they are not giving out any more invites this year.

Never posted before, but figured this was worth posting...For what it's worth, I was offered an interview just last week. I'm interviewing on March 31st...

How is the class already full if they are interviewing next week?

I interviewed at the end of last month and still have not gotten a response back.

Interviewing for waitlist spots or accepted pending seat spots is pretty commonplace at a lot of schools...It's shady, but most schools do it. That's the risk of interviewing at the end of the cycle.

Try calling in. It's 10x faster.

well i called them earlier today and they told me the decisions had been made but are awaiting approval from the dean and that letters had not been sent out.

Also she told me that the class was full.

I spoke with Tia, who did you speak with?

I interviewed on the final interview day during last year's cycle. I know of at least 3 other people who made it in along with me. Also, I was accepted without ever being put on a waitlist.

As far as I remember, there was also word about the class being full when I interviewed. It doesn't matter whether the class IS full or whether it ISN'T - you should go into your interview with your game face on. Even if it's totally full and you're vying for a waitlist spot, people get off of the waitlist all the time. If you do well and get into a high waitlist position, you still have a good chance of getting in.

Last cycle, I was accepted to 2 schools and waitlisted at 2 more. I eventually got into those 2 waitlisted schools as well. The waitlist doesn't equal "game over".

For anyone that is already accepted, do you mind letting me know what is required for immunizations at western? I'm on their alternate list and going to the doctors for another school I'm accepted to for now to get all that taken care of. It would be nice not to have to go to the doctors again if I hear some great news from western.thanks!

I'll PM you the info!

I decided to withdraw my acceptance...hopefully that's one more spot up for one of you guys.

Hey everyone,
Do you know if Western is still sending interview invites? I got my app in at the beginning of March (I know, it's late) and I haven't heard back yet. Any words of wisdom?

I spoke with one of the admissions staff and she told me that the last interview date is March 31. She also said the class is full as of now. Probably not what you wanted to hear but things could change. I would call them to hear information directly.

Sent my deposit today! Stoked!!! Is there a facebook group for WesternU COM class of 2015? If not, we should start one so we can all get to know each other and stay informed. Can't wait to meet everyone this fall!

just talked to one of the counselors and she told me that letters for the Feb. 24th go out tomorrow. :xf:

Hey everyone! I just wanted to say thanks again for your help with this. After a looong week of panicking I just found out that they have decided to keep me!!!! I have never been so relieved in my life. Can't wait to meet all of you this fall. Woo hoo!!!!!!😀

Im glad it worked out! now this will be a story you can tell for a long time!

Interesting update: I got my letter from Western today that says the class is full (booooooo) but that they've granted me deferred admission for next year (yayyyyyy) and that I have until Aug. 15 to decide. Does this mean there's still some possible wait list movement? Either way, that's good news to me since I'm definitely in somewhere, this year or next.

well thats better than a rejection... when did you interview?

I, too, received a letter stating thet the class is full but they'd like to offer me deferred admission for the class of 2016! I'm really excited about it because it actually works better for me on a personal level and now I have a year off to relax! 🙂

I honestly didn't know they gave deferred admissions, so I was freaking out when my letter was so thin. It turned out to be good news! Good luck this year to those who got accepted! I'll see ya next year!

I interviewed Feb. 24, and it's much better than a rejection, yup. I'll call Monday about what this might mean for possible admittance this year.

well congrats everyone! atleast now i wont freak out right away if i get a thin letter...

pretty crazy that next year's class is already filling up and the general application cycle has not even opened yet.

does anyone know if anyone from the Feb 24th was actually admitted into this cycle or did everyone get a deferred entrance into next year?

I don't know, but I interviewed on Feb 10th and got my deferred acceptance letter today (same time as some people from the 24th). Maybe they filled up completely from the interviews on the 10th. Alternatively, they could have reviewed the applicants from both dates simultaneously. Who knows!

You basically have a one year guilt free vacation. Seriously, you can completely relax and not worry that you are somehow being "irresponsible". Enjoy this time!

Hi everyone, and congrats to all of you who got accepted! Can't wait to meet you all! And for those with deferred acceptances, enjoy your year off! I also got a deferred acceptance last year for this coming Fall and I can tell you that this past year has been the best! I traveled to many different places, spent lots of time with family, read many books, enjoyed my hobbies, etc... It has been the best vacation year and now I am ready to start school! 🙂

I posted the following in the COMP Class of 2015 thread and thought I would post it here as well:

So I just got the email regarding ISAC this summer and am not sure yet whether I really want to participate in the program... Can any current students share their ideas on ISAC, whether they participated in it or not? How is it being a facilitator? Do projects (prosections) take a lot of your time during the normal school year? And how much is ISAC? I guess what I'm really trying to find out is if it's REALLY worth it (whether it helps a lot during the first semester) or if it's just a little plus.

The main reason I was interested in doing ISAC initially is that I've been out of school for a few years and thought it would be a good way to get back in the groove before med school really starts.

Thanks a lot!

I would love to share in your enthusiasm as I received a deference as well. However, due to time not on being my side, does anyone have any insight as to the possibility of getting into this year's class versus next? Waiting a year w/ guaranteed acceptance sounds awesome, but isn't a reality for me at this moment. Thanks!

That stinks that they're giving out deferred acceptances, I guess having interviewed on 2/24, that's the best I can hope for. I live on the east coast so I'm still waiting for "the letter." Why are they even bothering with another interview date if the class is full? Also, is it a straight deferral or is it a deferral alternate list (still a chance for this year)? If its the latter, that's probably bad news for those on the regular alternate list.

There were definitely people last year who got in to the class off the deferred acceptance list so I wouldn't give up hope just yet. I'd let my interest be known to the committee. Also, I didn't mean to say that a deferred acceptance is better than a straight up acceptance - just wanted to point out the silver lining. At worst it's like a waitlist for this cycle and at best it's a strong card to head into next year's application cycle with, a year to build an application to residency by doing research, or a year long guilt free vacation. Best of luck in this cycle though.

so it looks like this year's class if full. damn it. I consider myself a very strong candidate who applied too late like mid february, so maybe they never even looked at my app?

Is it fair to say that I can give up all hope into being accepted into this year's class then?
