Ooh okay so it's nothing to do with someone's personality, but more about their learning process.

I thought it was something to do with Western students being more relaxed while Davis students are more intense and Type A. It's just something I've noticed with the few Davis/Western students that I know, not making conclusions or anything. Just making sure it's not a stereotype that actually exists.
 
That's cuz SoCal are the beach bums and NorCal are the hipsters!

Actually, that makes it sound like Californians are lazy butts

I'm not from Western so I pretty much know nothing about the program, but I will say we recently had a 4th year Western student do a 4 week oncology rotation here at CSU 🙂
 
Congrats to the 2016 class. If you guys have a Facebook page, there are a lot of 2015 students that are interested in answering questions for you. The 2014 class is a part of our Facebook page and they were very helpful in preparing to start school. Would whoever is in charge of the group page please shoot me a private message? Thanks!

Mostly go into small animal medicine. The first graduating class is in 2007. So There have been 5 graduating classes. So if the ones who did enter a residency are probably finishing up now. Most schools tend to reflect the same like the amount who go in to small versus larger versus equine, etc etc.

do you know if there are statistics available about the residency placements? or internship placements?

in terms of tuition, you pay a loooot for 3rd and 4th year... what does that actually cover - like how much of these clinical experiences are covered by the tuition?

The third and fourth year are more expensive due to more traveling, it increases the amount you actually get to have in your pocket, not what you have to pay for tuition per se, But with loans you do not have to take it all out or if you do you do not need to spend it. You can cut dramatic costs by moving to your hometown and living at home for part of your fourth year. And I believe Western pays for traveling and housing that is over 60 miles away during your third year. But don't hold that against me.

It gives information from 1/3 of the graduating class of 2011, does that mean only 1/3 had jobs right after graduation? yikes

That is awesome! Do you know how they went about being able to do that? I visited CSU and loved that department.
 
Hi all! I am new to the Student Doctor Network. I have been accepted at Western University class of 2016. I look forward to meeting all of you!!
 
I'm new to SDN and thinking of applying to schools in the US (I'm from Canada). I likely will not have my application ready for the 2013 cycle as I plan to write the GRE in Oct for the first time.

If anyone has any recommendations please let me know! I was reading back on everyone's acceptance letters, and it seems very nerve-racking.

I have been devastated in the past when I received my rejection letters, but I feel I can do this and do not want to give up yet!
 
So tomorrow is the day...only a month in waiting. I hope to be off the alternate list and wish everyone luck who is on it as well. Good luck to everyone!

Everyone still has until tomorrow, so if you don't hear until Tuesday, don't freak :scared:. I declined my spot recently so hoping the spot goes to someone on SDN. Don't forget they also overaccept, so it might be a little longer until you hear something. :luck::luck:

My hope is they will get to us before the end of April. I really don't want to be in limbo until August.:xf::xf:

I wish everyone good luck! Sadly I am still waiting, too..

Our Open House is this Saturday April 21 from 9-3. If you're in town or nearby, come down and visit us. 🙂
 
I'm flying in the following week for the preview day. Admissions recommended that over the open house because preview day is oriented towards students rather than the community. I'm excited for my first vet school visit as a prospective student! I hoping to visit the surrounding cities for potential living options and check out a couple of barns to get a feel for boarding options, since right now Western is my clear number 1. I learned from my undergrad that some factors outside the school can be just as important as the school itself, so I will be doing lots of unscientific research 🙂 Then I will begin the countdown for 2013 admissions!!
 
For the alternates, we were told to have our deposits post-marked by April 16th, so it will take them a few days to get them in the mail and process them before they know how many spots are left. Also the alternates are hand picked based on which students decline, to keep the class profile in balance. It might be another week or so before they accept students from the alternate list, but I wish you all the best of luck! My fingers are crossed🙂

You just gave me a heart attack that I (as an alternate) needed to send a deposit.

Ugh. Waiting sucks.
 
Deposit check was cashed, so it seems that things are moving along. Good luck to the waitlisters!:luck::luck::luck:
 
Considering they overaccept by 80 people or so, that may be why no one has gotten a call 🙁
 
OK I just called...So 105 have accepted as of today. This means that of course the class at this point is full, and no one has been taken off the alternate list yet. Karen did suggest making appointments for a review of your application if you are still interested in applying for next year.

Remember, people from OOS might get into their IS, which would be much cheaper. Don't give to yet!!

Do I give up? No. Do I now have to re-evaluate, as the BF doesn't want to stay on the mainland while I study in the Caribbean (that is, if I got in there even) but bringing him with me is costly and he can't legally work on the islands and parents won't be willing to help with that expense?

Ugh, I have to take the GRE again too. FML
 
boo 😡 sorry guys, especially FTB 🙁. The next cycle is right around the corner...and you never know when someone will get called off their waitlists. Some schools haven't even started calling off of them so there is still hope. :xf:

Congratulations to everyone! I'm a soon to be second year DVM student at WesternU and thought to post here to see if anyone is interested in renting out a room in the house I am renting. It's a pretty two story home in La Verne in a gated community seven minutes driving distance from school and the rent is only $590! Private message me if you are interested. The lease starts August 1st. 🙂
 
Someone told me that Western gives you a big multiple choice test at the end of every semester, and if you fail the test, you have to repeat the whole semester, unlike other schools that would make you repeat a course...is this true?

I've never heard this before, but she said a school representative said that at her school. I'm going to preview day in a week so I might find out then...

I think they give one as part of finals but that is not the only final. Check out Claws Paws Scales - a blog by a current student, she talks about exams.

Close, but not quite. At midterms, you take 2 large multiple choice tests (each covers 4 weeks of material), a laboratory practical exam, and a written exam called the ACT that has you write about the pathophysiology of a disease. At finals, you have 2 more multiple choice exams, and one more lab practical. All of these tests count towards your main vet basic sciences class, which is 16 credit hours. If you fail that class, since everything is so tied together, you have to repeat. Our class (2014) lost some people due to this policy, but the 2015's haven't lost anybody. There are a few other smaller classes (clinical skills, ethics/law, and micro/cellular bio.) I don't know what happens if you fail one of those, I'm not sure if it's ever happened.
 
I got an email sent 3:45pm Friday afternoon. I am so freaking out...no details, no working Westernu email, just trying to find a place to live.

I did speak to someone on Wednesday who said no one had come off the alternate list yet...so hopefully more alternates will be join us in the fall!
 
I called today. Ostensibly to check if they had received my transcripts from spring semester's courses. I also inquired about the wait list and they said "we've given the list to the dean but he hasn't given us an order yet, we should be making offers soon."

That seems to contradict the two offers that went out on Friday... but it also gives me hope that there are still some offers to be made.

I'm hoping it's you!!!!! Call them up and tell them the fish bat story!! Tell them they need some humor in vet med. give them the history of boba fett to show you are well rounded as a pretty nerd lol.

Congrats! 🙂 Does anyone happen to know the range of GPA scores that receive acceptance into Western? I checked out their competitive student section on their website, and it gives the average, plus it mentions you must have at least a 2.8, but I was wondering if anyone would mind posting their successful stats? Or maybe PMing me if you would prefer?

I was accepted with a 3.6 overall, 3.75 last 45, 730 Q, 520 V... lots of hours. You can check the successful applicant thread to find more....
