WesternU C/O 2016

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi guys!

I am hoping to apply this cycle c/o 2017 and was wondering if any of you c/o 2016's could offer any wisdom on how strict they are with some of the prereqs, specifically the 500 hours of research and the public speaking.

A big chunk of my 500 hours experience is lab related, but not direct animal handling (i.e., no lab mice).

I also don't have a traditional public speaking background...2 credits serving as a course assistant instructor, and then, since the requirement is for 3 credits, I was going to see if they'd consider the capstone/presentation portion of one of my chem classes (which was carried out throughout the semester) to make up the remainder..a longshot I guess but my school doesn't offer public speaking and I've been avoiding the hassle of taking it elsewhere.

Any opinions would be much valued! From what I've been seeing here, they seem to be a bit strict with requirements so I wanted to check in to see what you guys thought! If it would be a long "appeal" process to get it approved, it might not be worth it because I want to get VMCAS submitted to my other schools as soon as I can..

I highly recommend that you contact admissions. Lacey and Karen are both very helpful with course equivalent questions. When I applied two years ago, I sent them a copy of the syllabus for the course I took in public speaking and they reviewed it. They took it that year but the next year updated their requirements that the course had to be English language. Either way, they are extremely helpful. I sent my pre-req worksheet to them twice and got it back with suggestions.

As far as strict. Very. You will need to have a plan to earn 500 hours by matriculation. Also you will need to complete all their pre-reqs. They do not waive them. I took public speaking this summer and human physio last fall to qualify. If you need them to evaluate a course for applicability, that's pretty quick. If you're going to fight them for this chem credit to count as public speaking if they tell you no... I have no idea how long and drawn out that would be. Not to mention messy.

**edit** Just saw you said 500 hrs research. Is that a new requirement? 500 hours of vet experience is needed but research?! that I don't know.

Thanks for the info! Sorry, I may have worded things confusingly; the 500 hours may include research as one way to fill it, as long as it is involves animals to a point admissions deems sufficient.

Did you end up matriculating/any input on PBL?

I'm actually on the wait list for this year :/

PBL/small group can be intensely rewarding if you have enough self motivation. Unlike a standard curriculum where the profs lecture at you, you and your classmates will be doing the info gathering and presentation to each other to help solve cases. If you like case studies you'll probably like it. I highly recommend you attend an info session if you are concerned, they do a practice PBL session there and you get an idea. If you can't do that but still are interested enough to apply, they will do one at the interviews.

So you gotta know yourself. But if you like researching to solve problems and group work it is awesome stuff.

I recommend the blog "Claws, Paws and Scales" it is by a current student and will give you a look at the structure of the curriculum and student life.

Good Luck!

After every 8 week block you take two "written" exams (multiple choice) that cover the 8 cases you have that block. Each question is assigned to an "ology" (anatomy, physiology, pathology, etc) since we don't have separate classes for each of those subjects. Also you take a practical exam for pathology, anatomy, parasitology, histology, radiology, +/- microbiology, etc.
Anatomy dissection is twice a week and done with your group. Professors are there to help you and but they don't stand there and say "this is ..."
Our reverence for life philosophy mean that we will not do anything to an animal/patient unless that patient needs it. So all of our cadavers are donated to the WAVE program (Willed and Deceased Animals for Veterinary Education). Once we are finished with the cadaver that semester they are cremated and returned to the owners if they wish.
Hope this helps 🙂

are there any blacks in this school?

cost of living in pomona? what about the cost of living somewhere near pomona?

their curriculum looks interesting as well.

I mean what do you even say to that? 😕
If I didn't know better I would have totally called troll. It would be less terrifying if it actually was a troll. :scared:

You say
1) it is 2013...are you for real?
2) You can clearly use the internet to find this forum, so why don't you just type in Class Breakdown: Diversity into Google in the privacy of your own home?

what is the d.mn problem? all im asking is if there are any blacks at this school. you know, some people of races dont like to feel that they dont belong.

jeez

Hi-Yes, there are black students, not just in the DVM program but also in the other programs. Not a lot of representation, but I don't think there are that many black applicants, either. PM me if you have any questions about the program or Pomona or whatever🙂

Well forgive me for being slightly appalled at the word "blacks". What are you from the 1940s?
Maybe "How many black students does Western typically admit?" Or "Does anyone know the ratio of minorities at Western?"
But "Are there blacks" is :eyebrow:
Are you a "black" FV90?
Sounds a little derogatory no?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with asking if there are black students or any other students of color in veterinary programs. Veterinary schools as a whole are about 90% White so it can feel very alienating for certain students of color. There are some, although very few, black students at WesternU. However, outside of Tuskegee University, WesternU is considered one of the more "diverse" schools. We also have a student organization called SCORE, which is a students of color & allies organization. Feel free to visit the website, we have statistics listed on there as well: http://scoredvm.blogspot.com

Thanks for caring diversity!

I'm a first year student at WesternU. I'd be willing to answer any questions about housing, safety concerns, and demographics! Shoot me a PM 🙂
