What are you going to buy with your first real Doc paycheck?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Uh... Once you've shot guns, you'll understand.
I would love to have a pistol, rifle, semi auto, shotgun and (even though no one sells them) an auto shotgun. Auto shotgun only because it's literally noob mode for shooting targets.
Having friends in the military means I usually only have to pay for the bullets/shells. But if you look at prices for some of them.... $21/ea makes you more conservative lol

Sadly all the 'fun' guns have really expensive ammo.

Okay, wtf

Yeah, you know, I like good scotch but at some point it gets ridiculous. My friend brought a bottle of this to a party one... and my only thought was... "why"? People would have enjoyed a $100 bottle just as much!
That's just stupid. I'd honestly steal the bottle and run. Not really, but I'd tell him to put that back where he got it because this is NO place for this kind of scotch. Kind of like FML hanging out with this douche who used blue label to make mixed cocktails. You should be suspended from alcohol if you do that... especially when you're trying to act like "Oh, whatever, I have money and I can do this". The proper response is "Well, I have a fist and you have a face, so I can punch you".

Ha. you pegged him pretty well. I guess it takes a special and specific kind of person to do such a thing. His reasoning was pretty much "Because I can. Why not?" 😵

I would literally rather drink $30 vodka than five figure Scotch. That **** is gross.

Actually dying of laughter

The high end of the collectors market is £65,000-150,000 a bottle, and the most ever paid for a bottle was a one off 1.5L 64 year old Macallan in a unique Lalique decanter. It went for $460,000.

In fact the last dram of this special 64 year old Macallan single malt is available to drink at the bar at the Montage in Beverly Hills right now. (Macallan sold some of the same whisky at specialty charity events around the world leading up to the auction. One remains.)
It will set you back $64,000. For a single dram.

A single decanter of whiskey can pay for my medical education and then some. Ok...I am going to crawl back into my hobbit hovel and contemplate my peasant existence.

It's probably for only 10ml, maybe 15ml if you're lucky. Essentially a taste. One sip to prep the palate and a second to dissect the flavor and finish.

Here's a more reasonable edible substance on an attending paycheck.

cadbury-7.jpg

Cadbury Dairy Milk Spectacular 7. Apparently they are only making fifty bars for now. Hopefully by the time I'm an attending it'll be for general purchase and I'm gonna get one. Oh what am I saying, I'm gonna be an attending. I'm gonna buy 10.

imagine you're about to serve it and then you spill it

Start to pay off my loans and pray that I can somehow pay them down before I am 50 with hardened arteries and diabeetus. "Shorter of breath, one day closer to death".

What I did:
1. Paid off my highest interest loan (which was a drop in the bucket compared to what I'm still paying off).
2. New car (although my old car was in such bad shape, this was a necessity rather than a splurge, and I bought something to fit my budget at the time).
3. Bought some nice (i.e. not hand-me-down) furniture that actually matched.

Finally a real answer.
Right? I just didn't want to seem unprofessional. Even though...

Number 3: That's danger zone. It starts off with "oh, a new couch" and then you landslide into redoing the entire living room. Then the dining. Then the kitchen. Then the bathroom. And you finally are like "Jesus, where did all that money go"
I honestly though modifying cars was bad. But home decor and **** is just ridiculous and addicting.

Edit - I still enjoy the redoing. Making your place home seriously makes a difference when you come to it after a long day.

Signing for your package at a party and discovering that your $460,000.00 decanter of whiskey shattered during transit: Rough cinematic approximation.

*Spoiler alert for the poor souls in subterranean dwellings who have never watched this 34-year-old masterpiece. You now have homework this weekend: Watch Raiders of the Lost Ark and/or Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. The Temple of Doom is not required. NO CRYSTAL SKULL.

25 year old Taskers scotch. And start saving for a BMW M4.

After drinking stuff like Stoli for a while and then buying a handle of Grey Goose... There is a huge difference in the quality of liquors.

I exclusively drink Chopin, Spud, and Van Gough. The hangovers from inferior products just aren't worth it. I'm really a whiskey and rum guy, but hard liquor that isn't vodka really upsets my stomach nowadays for some reason, which is tragic.

First paycheck will probably not be anything special. Most of it will probably go to paying of debt. I'll probably go out to really fancy dinner and assuming my current car makes it through med school and residency and will likely be on its last legs, I will probably go buy a luxury car that week.

The pricing varies by model, year, and even particularities of a specific production run. The 240 that I learned to drive in was cheaper to insure than my current 240, even though it is a year newer. The amount you'd receive if there were a claim also varies, so you have to be pro-active about investigating the terms before you buy.
Anything special in that 240?

Mont Blanc.

I have always felt they are a bit overpriced for the performance they offer but the nibs are absolutely beautiful.

That is one beautiful pen. Recently bought a fountain pen with a gold plated stainless steel nib for my old friend who just finished defending her doctorate thesis. No where near the quality of a Mont Blanc but we spent 15 minutes signing our names and o m g soooooooooooo much better than the ballpoint poop I have been using all my life. I'm sure she'll find a much better fountain pen in her future but everyone remembers their first.

Great idea dude! Will definitely drop some benjamins on a fountain pen in the far far future.

Sadly all the 'fun' guns have really expensive ammo.

With one exception (For now). Shooting an M1 Carbine is about as much fun as you can have with your pants on and the ammo is relatively cheap! The authentic WWII ones are getting super expensive though.

In case you start to get bored of shooting non-reactive targets. It's tannerite and you can buy it pretty much anywhere, legally. The normal use is just to make a target that only creates a large sound and some smoke (no fire etc). But, when you have a combustion reaction that is being compressed by a hole made in a tree, you will see what happens.

Oh, and I always wanted a firearm collection. Maybe, I'll start small with a .44 Magnum revolver.

I suppose it might be fun to pay for the tax stamp to get a suppressor for my ar-15, and an eotech optic would also make a nice addition.

Ooo I've been wanting to get some and put it in a watermelon just for the Lols. Unfortunately the range that I go to doesn't allow Tannerite. Otherwise I would have picked up a big tin of it already :cyclops:

Guess I'll stick with shooting cans of coke for now. Fighting childhood diabetes 12 oz at a time.

It's only six of them. And if you go out to the range you can burn through ammo fast. That's what the 10/22 is for, burning through cheaper ammo so I do go burning through the more expensive stuff.

I will, hopefully, live in a place that recognizes my right to defend myself from aggressors so I will own a pistol for concealed carry and a rifle (probably an Ak 74 or AR 15 ) for home defense. Besides that, I may build a bolt action rifle for long range shooting even though long range shooting is a pain in the rear.

I can't understand people who drop hundreds or thousands of dollars on alcohol every year. People think I'm crazy for not liking alcohol but the stuff makes me feel awful.

Also linked to an innumerable number of cancer cases per year. I am a natural born miser so the thought of spending money on alcohol stops me but I always think about the proven effects of increased use on cancers of the esophagus and stomach. I have been a teetotaler for years and I never plan on going back.
