I bought my first pair of boots recently and loved them. When I was at the store, there were some pairs approaching $1k that I absolutely loved - super comfortable, cayman belly. They were awesome. Just couldn't justify the expense, though. People make fun of me up here (Chicago) when I wear my boots, but I'm definitely going to wear them when I get back to Texas.

I wear them all the time, they are awesome for standing for long hours. Clogs are never wide enough and I always tend to get blood/fluid in my socks (even when wearing booties) with sneakers. I switched to cowboy boots and no more pain, no more blood in socks. Plus, they look less clown like than clogs or crocs. I can polish them and they look almost brand new, too, which is awesome. I don't wear a huge heeled ones but they are obviously cowboy boots.

I plan on buying some nice Lucchese's when I get the money. They are worth 1.5K plus.

I've worked with female nurses who show up to work with a Starbucks coffee in hand, at 645 with perfect hair, polished nails, full-face make up, ironed and starched cute scrubs, and who had to drive in from 1 hour away, and I marvel. At that job, I rolled out of bed at 630, showered, found some unfolded wrinkly scrubs in the clean laundry basket (or fished them out of the dryer, leaving the other clothes there to deal with later!), and walked 5 minutes to work, hoping I had time to scoot by the cafeteria for some reconstituted coffee concentrate...

I don't know if women have a secret time-stop ability, or if they are just better on less sleep than me, or what. I keep my hair buzzed so I don't have to deal with it. I own 18 of the same black t-shirt, a couple of each of my favorite cargo pants which I buy off the rack without trying on, and maybe 4 pairs of shoes, two of which are off-brand crocs. I do have a few other clothes for dress up, but for every day when I'm not in scrubs, I basically have the same uniform... not because I don't appreciate fashion, but because I just don't have time to keep up with it.

I need all my spare time for video games, internet forums, and other strange hobbies and obsessions.

My "huge splurge" with my first attending paycheck was a trip to Ann Taylor Loft with the intent of buying anything that caught my eye (specifically thinking of the outfits they have on mannequins with accessories and everything because I like that store and the clothes they have but only ever got sale or clearance stuff before). Despite loading up with belts and necklaces in addition to an entire work wardrobe I only spent like 2k. But since my daily work wear is usually just scrubs it was pretty frivolous spending, which was difficult for me. I did however spend 30k for a kitchen remodel later that year.

The fact that I don't easily spend big money is a big reason I have been able to pay down 200k of debt since graduating med school (that and having a husband earn decent money during residency even if he is less frugal than me) despite also putting away a lot for retirement.

Ann Taylor Loft can be hit or miss. I'd go with Nordstrom [Rack] or Anthro and get a few key items to wear all the time. Anthropologie sale can be really good.

The hubby is in charge of booking vacations and all because I get so caught up in the desire to not spend more that it sucks, while he is more likely to splurge but knows how I am and ends up finding a great middle ground. He is on board with the overall plan (trying to get to a target net worth so we don't "have" to work) but is less frugal than me so if I care about the cost I do the buying (so I get the milk and eggs at costco, and do some big grocery shopping trips with coupons and everything, but I don't try to force him to do that since it isn't his style). We each spend whatever we want each month, but it just so happens that neither of us goes crazy so we spend a lot less than what is coming in. You on the other hand probably need to actually work out a budget for stuff since you have some expensive tastes (which is fine, but if you have specific goals you aren't reaching do to that then it isn't fine).

Not only did he make a reasonable amount, but he had minimal student debt. Plus, when I was deployed during med school I got extra money because of him. So when his work was screwing with his hours towards the end of chief year I told him to just quit and take however much time he wanted to figure out what he might want to do for work (if anything, but turns out he hated just staying at home so now he is in school to get his RN-he was an LVN before).
