As summer is beginning to wrap up, anyone wants to share what they did this summer that was fun/exciting/boring, etc? All I did was research.

Also, I was just curious what people did during each of their summers in undergrad, so feel free to share that too.

Manual labor this summer, and the previous 3 summers.

Took 15 credits of summer semester classes. Would definitely classify under boring.

Did research for 50-60 hours a week. Ill be taking my first day off this weekend cause I'm celebrating a birthday

Medical Mission Trip, 15 week Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship

Volunteered as a summer day camp counselor at a camp for children with handicaps. Mostly Autism and the like, but we also have a kid with a seizure disorder.

My performance at this summer camp opened up a door for me and I will be returning this fall as a rehabilitation aide for the speech, occupational and physical therapists as well as the medical director, a physiatrist.

I'm also volunteering with an organization that provides leadership opportunities for people with disabilities. This program is affiliated with and receives funding from my top choice medical school.

In my little free time, I've been offering vocational guidance to the Deaf youth in my community. Helping to set up shadowing experiences for them and such.

A busy summer of helping others.

For the first six weeks I continued my school-year job as a research assistant and worked full time. For the next six weeks I studied abroad in Central America. And now I'm sitting on my ass waiting for school to start back up.

summer between senior/freshman worked as a summer camp counselor, same for freshman/sophomore. sophomore/junior worked as a first aider for local dance and cheer camps, junior/senior summer research program. (mind you i am a non trad so that was many many years ago).

This summer? took orgo 1, orgo 1 lab, genetics, physics 2, physics 2 lab, got a divorce, got fired (whole program i was working with was eliminated), its been a rough one...

LMFAO damn bro, you need a drink. Whiskey help every situation (until you wake up and realize all your problems are still there)

Multivariable calculus 5 days a week, EE research 30 hours a week, IT for the college of education 12 hours a week.

Fun stuff.

I seriously love saying "Multivariable calculus." For example: "The study of physical chemistry requires multivariable calculus." Makes it sound sooo... awesome.

As for my summer, got a job and subsequently ran a business for a month (friend had to go on vacation and he has a small business).

While in school my summers were spent going to school. This is my first summer without school... so weird to be a normal productive member of society.

Continued as a tutor for my school under the STEM grant.

Dang I thought my summer was rough! I've been doing research 45-55 hrs/week, tutoring 10 hrs/week, and trying to stay afloat through this crazy application process...

21 hours of bio classes and research on morphology of coyotes. 😀
Toxicology, Embryology, Cancer biology, Statistics, Forensics, Psyc class, and research (50-60 hours a week)

Haha I know, multivariable calculus sounds so much cooler than Calc III 😛

Research at my university under an NSF grant

Vector calculus >>> Multivariable Calculus >>>>>>> Calc III

-Volunteered 65 hours at one of the hospitals in my city.

-Volunteered 215 hours at an Ortho surgery clinic

- Took a class to become a CNA

-Played in a summer college baseball league (I'm on a college baseball team at a large state school)

-Spent time at the lake, wake boarding and boating.

Note sure if this is off topic, but does anyone have any suggestions on how I can get involved with research at my school? I'm not sure how one would start this process.

Summer courses and Full time work. Pretty much a boring summer for me:cry:

Volunteering, shadowing, part time work

Yay extra curriculars!

Wake up, brush teeth, bathroom, shower, food, refresh SDN pre allo every 10 minutes, repeat.

Shadowed a neurosurgeon for a day in the OR.

Read lots of medical biographies.

Got my wisdom teeth pulled.

Worked at McDonald's.

Lost 25 lbs.

The MCAT dominated my summer up until the end of June. Then it was full time research, writing my primary/secondary applications, and drinking to forget my troubles of the prior activities.

Worked at the hospital 20 hours a week, took 2 classes, continued tutoring, continued volunteering at center for children with mental disabilities, worked as a new student orientation leader, did some work for a club, and hit the gym 3-4 times a week.

Pretty uneventful, but at least I was busy.

Engineering internship

took a class on Latin American studies

secondaries, secondaries, secondaries....

finished a 3 credits paper. Finished diablo 3. Applying to schools. And now just wasting time.

I worked a lot, and I volunteered at a local hospital and an inner city hospital that's closer to my college. It was a fairly mundane summer haha

Miami!
Physics 1 and 2 in a city college!
More Miami!

Bad summer for me.

I spent roughly the first month finishing up work at Best Buy, then I found out I had to move to Florida. That was a freakin mess for another month. Finally got down to here and I have done virtually nothing but study for ACT. I'm upset because I was planning no getting some volunteer work in this summer and work a few more hours.

Does volunteer work really matter for you...? It sounds like you're a sophomore in HS?

put on 10lb of muscle training for tough mudder, applied for jobs, and drank A LOT.

I had a paid research gig and I played golf in my free time. I also had a chance to go out to Colorado with some friends.

Worked part time (20hr. per week) as an EMT, about 10hr per week in research lab, and about 6 hr per week as psych research assistant. I've also been studying (sorta...) for ochem this fall.

I definitely could've done more this summer but it was only two months longs since we're switching to semester :/

Sounds like what I did my last fall semester of college, except I lost 20 lbs training. We should totally do an sdn TM event haha.

Is it 10-12 miles continuous? or is there like a break here and there?

Lived in Saint Louis.

Took Gen Chem 2 w/ Lab.

Vacationed in Panama City Beach, FL.

Hmmm...seems like most people did the same things. Did you guys at least go somewhere (i.e. a new city) to do research?

Regarding those of you doing secondaries, do you think it's possible for me to study abroad/research abroad/travel abroad (you get the point) during my summer while applying? Can everything be done online now? If so, I am assuming right now that I will be traveling for 8 weeks and I will be able to set my dates, so when would be the best time to go? First week of June to last week of July?

It is roughly 10-12 depending on the course. The breaks are the obstacles. I suggest doing the spartan runs they are a lot shorter depending on which one you do.

MCAT/full time research/ochem 2 lab/MCAT/MCAT/MCAT

Nice!

I was supposed to take Physics, but they dropped the class at the last minute, so my summer plans were thrown off, and I ended up taking an Intro to Sociology class for the summer 2 session. Watched a lot of movies, read some books, made some tie dye shirts, got certified in CPR AED, got 4 fillings in between my bicuspids and made my first Nigerian dish. Oh, and I basically planned out the next 3 years of college on OneNote 😀 That's pretty much it. I wish I could've volunteered at a hospital, though... 🙁

He could be a Junior. I didn't take my ACT until my senior year, I think 😀
But yeah, volunteering is great, but if you don't get to, don't sweat it. 🙂
