Noy,

It isn't possible to be more jealous right now. That's my lifelong dream right there.

Enjoy.

One day, one day...

My Christmas present to myself is the next best thing- tickets back to New Orleans to go watch Hawai'i go toe to toe with Georgia, with a 10-strong group of drunks in tow. No matter what happens, Good Lord is it gonna be fun...

And who knows, we just might show up to pull a Boise State...

I got a heliski trip with these guys:

Yeah.... Dude... That rocks. Never done it. Would love to take in the view, carve powder in a virgin bowl, riding out a mini-avalanche all while feeling the energy of the mountain. Bliss... 😍

Me and my doctor wife got the next best thing. Went to lake tahoe... strapped on our new C60's and Neversummer boards. 2-3 feet while I was there. Blue sunny skies. Came back with a tan. Just wished I lived out west instead of wimpy pennsylvania. 👎

Let me know how you like that, I am tempted to try something other than Garmin.

i love my tom tom. my husband bought me one awhile ago. mine shows you restaurants, gas stations, hotels, etc. along the way. it hooks up to my phone and the speaker is high quality (not like being on speakerphone of your cell phone). if someone text messages me it reads it off to me. supposedly you can hook it up to your computer and download extras like weather reports, gas prices, etc. all for free -- but i haven't gotten around to that yet.

I plan on it. Apparently her epidural with the last child (yes, someone went back for seconds) had a LOR at 11 cm.

If I wet tap, I'm saying "thar she blows!" and calling it a day.

DOOOOOOD! Sososososo jealous. Med school has really interfered with my powder time!!!

Quick story:
Went to the doctor for AOM while in Vail a few years ago.
Me: "Doc, should I not be going up and down the lifts w/ this?"
Doc: "Uh, if I tell you not to are you going to listen?"
Me: "Nah..."
Doc: "Ok, then. Well, I gotta go. We got fresh powder and there's a helidrop that needed a doctor along."
Me: "Wait, you get to go heliskiing...for free?"
Doc: "Yeah."

It sounded like in Colorado the groups were REQUIRED to have a doctor along...SWEET!

Toshiba REGZA 32" HDTV (Sweeeeeet!!)--present from pretty much everyone in my family and my wife's family.

Some shirts

Time to enjoy my last Christmas off before the dreaded internship year (cue faint, evil sounding music in the background)...

Happy New Year, all! 🙂

I must have big rats to need Hattori steel...

Could you educate us on Hattori steel. The only thing Hattori I know is the Hattori Hanzo sword from "KIll Bill" but that's probably not real. So, what is it?

Handmade kitchen knives by Ichiro Hattori from Japan. Nice gift if you like to cook. I settled for a set of Henckels.

Let's see...

So far I got a couple of gift cards. Apparently I'm not easy to buy for.

What did you get?

FROM S.O. :

2 bottles of my favorite cab on planet earth: Silver Oak (Alexander Valley).....Silver Oak makes one type of wine.....cabernet. They have two vineyards....one in Alexander Valley, one in NAPA Valley. The NAPA Valley bottle is actually twice as expensive as the Alexander Valley.....but I prefer the latter since the maritime influence on Alexander Valley in general keeps the grapes cooler, hence less fermentation, leading to a drier taste, which I prefer. My S.O. and I had a taste test last nite between the two Silver Oak vineyards.....she (obviously) knew which one I preferred, but didnt know why....she tasted them side by side and was able to identify that NAPA Silver Oak was fruitier and less dry than Alexander Valley Silver Oak....YIPPIEEEEEEE!!!!!

Three cool shirts

A cool overnight bag

Hilton Hotel gift certificate

Alarm clock with outside temperature sensor

S.O. was on call Christmas day. 🙂mad🙂

Wasnt too bad until 0015....BEEEEP BEEEEEP BEEEEEP BEEEEP i hate that f u kk ing sound!!!! she had to go operate on a lady with an UGI bleed refractory to earlier endoscopic intervention.

She came back at 3am.

We both had to work on the 26th so alarm goes off at 0517.......🙁

What Trisomy13 said. This and similar Japanese knives use a harder stainless steel than German knives which enables them to achieve a sharper edge (at a more acute angle) and hold it longer. They are also much lighter than German knives. The main disadvantage is the need to learn to use wet stones for sharpening, but it is not that difficult.

The wavy appearance is a product of 63 layers of steel -- it's marketed as "Damascus" but the proper term is "suminagashi". It is purely cosmetic.

Jet, I didn't realize your wife was a surgeon. Now I see why you are so geographically limited.

What I gave was far more fun.....the most fun being......my oldest son just finished Army Military Police training in November at Fort Leonardwood, Missouri. He's now stationed at Fort Polk which is great since he is close to me!

We spent Christmas together. We got drunk together. Talked about intimate father-son stuff.

Alas, he is shipping out to Afghanistan in March.

Meanwhile, to contribute to his Army-mousehole-apartment comfort, I got him an LCD flatscreen and DVD player.

And a Garmin GPS for his truck.

And a blue tooth speaker thingie for his truck.

And since I am gleaming with pride at my MP son who is busy protecting our country while I throw LMAs in knee scopes, a buncha C-notes for his pocket, since he makes in a year what I make in three weeks.

I am thankful to God that I am able to contribute to my children's comfort in their lives.

I'm up for adoption dude. Hook it up.

Nice tip on the wine. I'm starting to like wine. The martini's are just too strong to drink on call.

The outside temp clock is nice. My wife has one and it projects the temp onto the ceiling above our bed. This am 1 deg F. 😱 The other morning I was headed to Silverton for some deep pow pow and the clock read -14 deg F. We ain't in Louisiana no more.

And you still use the S.O. thing. If I hadn't seen the pics 😱 serious hottie. I still be wondering what S.O. really meant.

Yeah Urge I can educate ya on Hattori steel... It comes from Japan and that's all ya need to know. The Japs make the best tools around whether ya want to cut meat or wood. Come to think of it, anything that I ever saw that was made in Japan was top quality. GE and Motorola talk about six sigma practices--- horse$****! The Jap mofos are on 10 sigma! Did I tell ya that in my next life, I want to come back as a Japanese dude? Regards, ----Zip

So what's the difference between Damascus or suminagashi, or is that just the Japanese term for Damascus?

A rather unique xmas gift from the kids... they were shoppin' at Ace Hardware of all places and picked me up some "Anti Monkey Butt powder." Its a sweat absorber and friction fighter... It says on the bottle " Indoors or outdoors, work or play or on occasions when you sit on your butt all day. Don't let your buns get RED use Anti Monkey Butt Powder instead." Regards, ---Zippy

Real damascus is an ancient steel with supposedly extraordinary properties, but the art of making it has been lost for centuries. There have been papers published recently regarding its nanotubule microstructure, if metallurgy is your thing.

Modern "damascus" is steel made by a technique called pattern welding. It looks like the ancient metal, but unlike ancient damascus, the technique does not make the steel superior to similar steel without the pattern.

Suminagashi is one such pattern. It literally means "flowing ink." I guess it is a type of modern damascus but it seems to be cheaper than more impressive patterns. I think it might even be mass-produced somewhere before it's layered onto various brands of knives. Kershaw Shun knives, which you can buy at US department stores, uses a 33-layered suminagashi. The Hattori suminagashi has more layers and looks a bit nicer, and is still priced similarly to non-damascene Japanese knives made with the same type of steel (VG-10).

The really cool damascus costs big bucks. My knife in the damascus steel below (also Hattori) would cost over $1000. Even without the pattern, it would probably be the best knife you could get without getting something custom made by a Japanese master:
