**What Schools Should I Apply To? / What Are My Chances?** (Read if this is you)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Getting ready to prep for the DAT this summer. Plan to study all summer, take late July, first week of August before going back to school. I just don't have time to study during the school year with classes, sport, etc.

My application so far looks like this (as of end of sophomore year) best I can figure. I'm still waiting on Ochem and Genetics grades, which I expect to be A/A- for class and lab grades so those should go up just a bit. I have one C in Comparative Anatomy lab:

oGPA 3.66/3.71 (+/- and w/0 +/-)
sGPA 3.56/3.74
BCP 3.51/3.67
non-science 3.71/3.71

--I've taken all the basic pre-reqs, physics, calc, bio, chem, Ochem (A- for the year !!!!!), etc. Also have Genetics, Comparative Anatomy done.
--90 hours shadowing general dentist so far. I have a 90 hour internship scheduled for this summer with a specialty clinic that does OS, Endo and cosmetic. I will also do some one day shadow experiences with general dentists so another 20 hours or so.
--Volunteer hours, will have over 200 hours by the end of June
--President of one club, VP of another, board member of a 3rd.
--RA
--Admissions Rep (give tours, host overnight students, etc.)
--Varsity Athlete (will be captain the next 2 years)
--LOR's---I will get a strong one from our family dentist--he sparked my interest in dentistry after having a pretty severe dental issue that landed me in the hospital, dentist I shadowed last summer has offered a LOR as well. I have 3 science profs that have offered, no committee at my school.

Obviously I want to do as well as possible on the DAT. What score is "minimum" for my GPA, etc. to make me competitive. Also, which schools would you suggest. Geography isn't an issue but I'd prefer the smaller towns. I'm ok living just about anywhere though. My list so far includes:

MSDOH
Iowa (instate)---could live at home--huge cost savings!
Minnesota (could make a case for instate--lived in MN for 18 years, graduated from MN high school)--would have free room/board likely with grandparents
Indiana
New England
Creighton?

Plan now is small town general dentist possibly doing some endo and ortho??? I'm interested in OS, but not sure I really want to add the extra years and I think doing basic extractions in the office will be fine.

I know this is early but I want to have a good plan in place before junior year starts so when it comes time to apply this time next year I'm ready, mainly with the school list, and just starting to get a bit nervous for the process 😀. I think I'm a strong candidate already but anything I'm missing (other than the DAT obviously). I also want to get a list in place so I know what upper level classes I need for sure.

Hi everyone, I am making this post alive again! I am applying to dental schools this upcoming cycle and am worried about OOS acceptance rates. This data is amazing but it has been quite a few years since then. Do you all have any suggestions to get the most recent advice on OOS statistics? I know there is a book available for pay but I would rather not pay money if I can get that information for free. Thank you!

I'm with the above comment. I am re-applying this year and would like to apply to schools smarter this year than last year. I'm broadening my scope this year and have beefed up some of my stats, but with how broke I am I don't want it the app money be a waste again! Some up to date stats on these schools would be wonderful.

Roseman School of Dentistry
Tufts

Also CA. Not as high of GPA (3.2-3.3) but my DAT is 21-23 across the board. How did you come up with that list? Using the data in the beginning of this thread? I've come up with only 8 schools (shooting for 15 this year), and used some of the information but it is all so old it seems like it would be out dated.

I've just been going from school to school and coming up with my own data and list but it's proving time consuming. Finding 8 schools that are options has taken like 4 hours since I'm considering gpa/dat/friendly to OOS and whiteboys/coursework/etc.

Yep, I've been using http://dental-schools.startclass.com/ and http://predds.net/dental-school-admission-statistics-2/ (which I believe were referenced in the first post?) It is super time consuming, but you'll be researching schools before interviews anyway -- the more you look around, the more likely you'll see things that stand out to you, while others may not stand out as much. Just depends on what you like. I searched mainly considering DAT score, just because I personally think DAT score is more indicative of whether a school will take you since it's standardized.. but I also know that's not entirely true because my sister had a 20 DAT, with similar gpa as me, got into UPENN and UCSF but rejected by UOP and ASDOH..? I'm just hoping my 19 at least makes them read my personal statement and not reject me right away!

Hi everyone. Wondering if I have a chance and a reasonable shot with a 3.38 overall and a 3.24 science gpa. I have experience as a Registered Nurse.

Would I have a shot at getting into dental school...?

Just a question, how did you get 17,000+ hours in 4 years? That's like 80 hours a week? Seems like that will raise some questions to the Adcoms.

Oops, I meant 7000+, not 17000

You're applying broadly and have great DAT scores and an at least usable GPA, which is helped by your postbac. You will get at least a few bites. Just get all your stuff in and go with the flow!

Jesus, you must really love shadowing hahah
I would research what schools you are trying to apply to -- some have a minimum requirement for DAT scores, such as a min. of 17, or something. So if you don't meet the requirements, you may need to take it again?

I think your list looks good. Your GPA is high but your DAT is pretty average. UCSF will be a reach, same with UCLA but your GPA should help. What about Ohio, UConn, Utah for the in-state tuition after a year? If you want to stay midwest, MOSDOH maybe.

I don't really like my odds at UConn. Looks like they are more into accepting people from the region. University of Utah is almost entirely Utah residents. Roseman, I'm a little reluctant to choose one of the newer schools. Columbus is a great city and I some friends there too, but Ohio St's oos tuition isn't a pretty sight. I've been to Cleveland before....No. MOSDOH, new school and I don't think I am up to par on their high expectations for volunteering.

Thank you for the insight!

I don't think your stats are so bad. You just have to apply to some more schools. Your best chance would be schools in your geographic region and private schools.

Hi I am a dentist from India with a masters degree (MDS) in Endodontics. My scores however haven't been great in either BDS or MDS. I scored an aggregate of 55.75 in BDS and 60 in MDS (minimum pass marks being 50 in both). I passed both BDS & MDS without any attempts.I have one year experience as a consultant endodontist since my PG got over and have been a senior lecturer since March 2015. I also have done a 2 week certificate course in current concepts in american dentistry from NYU, New York. I am not sure about the GPA scenario and I have a feeling based on my marks my GPA won't be good. I think it will somewhere around 2 for BDS & 2.3 for MDS. I am planning on taking NBDE part I in 3 months but is it really worth it or is my GPA going to ruin my chances of getting accepted into any dental school there? I took TOEFL in March 2014 and score 102 in it.

Please let me know your views on this. I would appreciate any and every advice I get from you guys. Thanks a lot!

Dude, check out the international thread. This is all gibberish to most of us.

Sorry, did you mean applying to both would not? I'm a little confused by how you phrased it.
My bad, no applying to both would be verrry bad if you brought that up. Like I doubt any school would accept a subpar applicant applying to both.

Not sure if VCU is a top choice for you, but from what I heard they really like students with a lot of dental-related experience (the mission trips are also great)!

So basically what I've seen is that dental schools (and I'm guessing med schools too) want to see passion for the field in their applicants. You being torn between both fields would show that you're still undecided, and I'm guessing a school would rather have an applicant that is 100% set on dentistry than one who still isn't sure. What if you got into both med and dental schools? What would you choose?
I'm not sure if you've applied yet, but maybe you should take another year off to really figure out what you want to do. It would be terrible to go to school in a field and ultimately regret not pursuing the other

Also, on the AADSAS application, it asks if you are applying or have ever applied to another health professional school. So they will know.

I think it's important for you to make it clear what you really like about medicine and what you really like about dentistry. If you're able to identify the reason and clearly articulate that then they'll be more receptive to the fact that you can't decide.

If you really like medicine for the same reason as dentistry, each one will ask you why you don't just go into the other field. If there's something specific that draws you into dentistry (or medicine), they make sure you vocalize that!

Hi everyone! I'm about to be a junior in college. I'm in the Honors program at a very good state school and have a 3.75 GPA (3.6 science). I have over 200 hours of volunteering, 250 hours of shadowing with three specialists and two general dentists, and I do have an in-state option but I would love to go to Michigan or UC Denver. I have good EC (vice president/cofounders of three clubs, treasurer/cofounder of one and secretary of another, also do club sport). I also am doing my honors research thesis as a junior. I am not applying until next cycle but I am curious as to where I should think of applying. Which are the best deal with the least loans? Which are the best? Thanks guys 🙂 (I also just took the DAT and got 24 AA, 24 PAT, including a 30 QR.)

Those sound like some amazing stats! Usually the best place to go if you're looking for the most affordable option is an in-state public dental school 🙂

I wouldn't waste my money on the CA schools and find 2 other schools that are out of state friendly instead (except UoP since it's not a state school). Your shadow hours are low so that will limit where you can apply since most schools want a minimum of 50 and many a minimum of 100 or more. Georgia requires 200 hours so I'd save the money there as well and find somewhere else to apply. Case requires 40 hours. NYU requires 100 hours. Baylor requires 75 hours.

Just wanted to get a feel for everyone's opinions on my chances. I have been accepted to a couple of masters programs, but I am still going to apply this cycle.

Went to a large university and graduated with an oGPA of 2.85 and sGPA of 2.5. Took my DAT a few weeks ago and received: 18 BIO / 19 GC / 19 ORGO / 19 PAT / 20 RC / 16 QR

I have over 1,700+ hours of dental experience in an orthodontist, periodontist, endodontist and general dentist's office. I have over 200+ hours of volunteer service. I have had leadership positions in various university organizations. Additionally, I have had two research experiences at a major university and cancer center. I have LORS from a professor, research coordinator, coordinator at the cancer center, and a dentist I shadowed.
Good ECs, but GPA is probably too low. Try a post Bacc or Masters

Am I competitive at all? I have 3.4 oGPA, 3.3 sGPA, and 3.9 GPA from my masters program. My DAT is 22AA, 22TS, 21 Bio, 22 Ochem, 26 Chem, 20 PAT, and 22 RC. I have a lot of shadowing, volunteering, and research. I'm currently submitting my research for publication but not published yet. I also have strong LORs.
