I'm from California and have an interview at NYU later this month. Also, I don't really know anyone I can hang out with in the NYC area.

If you were in my shoes, would you hang out in NYC for a day (alone) and experience the city, or just fly out the same day as your interview?

I've been to NYC before (Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, city tour, etc.) but I feel kind of guilty not doing anything fun there since I took the trouble to fly across the country. There is also the con that staying there longer will lead to me inevitably spending more money than if I simply left.

Opinions? 😀

Carrying luggage with you?

I went for a NYU interview last month and I was in the same exact situation. Since, I didn't know anything about NYC. I just joined one of the sightseeing bus tours - they go in a big loop w/i the city and you can listen to the tour guide narrating about NYC history. This bus tour thing has a few stops and you can hop off if you see things you like. Of course, you can hop back on. You basically visit the city w/o doing any of the walking yourself. Anyway... I definitely recommend doing something before leaving for home.

Check the following link out.

Hope this helps

Look online for things to do in NYC. Get a subway day pass and roam around the city on your own. I think that's more fun than doing a bus tour.

I highly recommend going to The Met. It has amazing exhibitions. The recommended admission for students is 10 bucks but you can get in with just a dollar.

I would just walk in wall street and a couple of famous streets. I don't get to walk in my hometown!

I went to downtown and hit up ESPN zone and got some beer, food, and some sports watching done.

if you like to shop
go to century 21 (right across ground zero)
its simply amazing!

The MET is amazing and cheap, yes. I would recommend American Museum of Natural History. If you are a dude, you'll like it more. It's where they filmed Night At the Museum, or whatever it's called. Of course if you're into the classics you'll like the MET more

Carrying luggage with you?

I'm sure I can leave luggage at my hotel if I have a late flight.
Okay... my interview is on November 23rd. I've decided I'll tour around. PM me if you're a fellow predent in the area and want to tag along. 🙂

OP, that's funny cause when I interviewed at California I was in the same situation as you. I ended up walking around the LA neighborhood and wandered around the campus.

ahh i was going to suggest going to the Met as well (the museum of natural history, not the opera house!). Try to check out MoMa too!!!

The Met is the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Anyways, you can't go wrong with any of the major museums.

Central park, times square, museums, ride the subway or take the ferry just for the hell of it.

OP!!!
This was my situation -- I could stay an extra day because I was at a friend's place. I thought I could tag along with somebody from the interview, but they were all leaving the same day (hotel $$ are EXPENSIVE, so it was totally understandable to not stay an extra night)

SO, I basically walked around ALL day.
PM me and I can give you the scoop on what to do!!!
=D

I like all the things that people so far have suggested, but to be honest, nothing is really "fun" unless you have people around to enjoy it with. On that note, I'd suggest doing a tour- esp. one of the food tours, since you're definitely bound to meet people if you're in a smaller group for a couple of hours. I've only been on the pizza tour (which was AWESOME because let's face it, who doesn't love pizza), but that only takes place once daily at 11 am, so you'll be at your interview then. I've heard really good things about City Food Tours, if you want to try that.

Let me know if you need other suggestions!

Okay, things can totally be fun by yourself. I stayed two nights at NYC by myself and it was great! After my interview, I did some reading (still in undergrad.. boo lol) but that night I took a cab over to Times Square -- it was super fun to walk around and see the sights! I did shopping there (the Toys R Us is actually quite fun for a big kid haha), and also roamed around Macy's for a while (not too far away, maybe a few blocks). So don't think you can't have a good time by yourself! There's also people connnnstantly trying to get an audience for Comedy Central shows, and Letterman and other late night shows are free. Hope you have a good time!!

I did the same thing you did and it was fun BUT i felt it wouldve been 1,000,000 x more fun with company!

Ahhh I wish i could hang out with you and see the city with company but i leave the day before your interview.

I think it's a great idea to stay and see the city. I'm kind of in the same boat (ie: from LA and wanting to stay and see NY) but i'm staying with a cousin so i'm planning on staying there for ~week (14th to the 22nd). Since she'll be busy working and going to school, i'm just destined to entertain myself. +pity+
If there are any predents flying solo in the area for the 11/16 interview, PM me if u want company. 🙂
