what to do after rejections?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I did not get into my top 2 dental schools and so I have decided to wait a year so that I can reply for the upcoming cycle starting in June. I need help on figuring out what to do for the year that I will be waiting. DO you guys have any ideas? I have been interning for about 3 years now, should I get a job with a dentist? I did research for a semester but it wasnt published or anything serious like that, so do I need to do some kind of research? Any ideas?

Did you only apply to 2 Dental School?? If so I would suggest applying to many more next time.. at Least 10!

I would try and contact that schools where you got rejected and ask THEM how you could improve your application. When I got rejected from schools during my first cycle, the admissions offices at the schools I wanted to go to gave me the MOST helpful information.

No I applied to about 8, but I didnt get into my top 2 and I do not want to go to the other schools that I got into. I do have appointments with the 2 schools, but I was just wondering if there was something that people on here could suggest

Were you accepted at any other schools? I mean, not getting into your top 2 is a bummer, but rejecting an acceptance elsewhere is absurd.

I do not want to go to the other schools that I got into.

Then why did you apply to those schools in the first place?????

Just go, in the end you'll be a dentist and no dental schools is going to like the fact that you turned down acceptances.

If you did some research and found a cure for caries it would certainly go a long way to gain acceptance at your "top 2 dental schools".

Turning down acceptances is ridiculous. This comes up about every 2 weeks on here. You got into Dental School. Does it matter that much it wasnt your top 2??? The answer is no. You will still be a dentist when you graduate and no one will be concerned with where you graduated from. Do you know how many people on here read this and would kill to be in your shoes?

Think of the income lost from postponing for 1 year (if it even works out- what if you dont get into your top 2 next cycle???).. That would be 1 year OF YOUR HIGHEST EARNING INCOME at the END OF YOUR CAREER YOU WOULD LOOSE OUT ON. Not what you would get as an associate. Odds are this would be as much, if not more, lost than the cost of your entire Dental education.

I dont often say this, i actually never say this. But wouldnt the OP be considered a...whats the word...A TROLL!!!

I don't think so. His older posts are good posts. I think these are his legit concerns.

From his older posts, I'm guessing he got into ECU as one school.

I'm guessing he didn't get into UNC as his top school.

i know rejecting acceptances is crazy but my mom has a lot of health problems and my parents want me to stay in state so that is why i rejected those acceptances. i didnt get into carolina or ecu (which i thought i would at least get into ecu). im meeting with ecu soon to talk about what i need to do to make my application better. any ideas of what i need to ask them?

I'm wondering the same thing....

If you get an offer of admission, you should happily accept it. There's no reason to reapply if you have offers this cycle as each cycle increases in competitiveness.

I raise my question again..

What if you don't get accepted to either next cycle? They may tell you how to improve your app, but that IN NO WAY guarantees you an acceptance!

I don't mean to put you down... why did you apply to schools you (apparently) had no interest of attending?

The whole point of picking "safety" schools is that you attend them if your fav schools reject you.

And your mom's health issues will definitely improve in a year. That umbilical cord is getting awfully long.

i think it would be hard to improve your application significantly enough in such a short time if you plan to apply early this upcoming cycle. you're taking a big risk

let the place go to someone who is more worthy & deserving & appreciative. & op you keep trying for your top 2 until you get in.

I know that you have family problems and all but ARE YOU CRAZY? you turned down not only 1 acceptance but MANY acceptances?

do yourself a favor, once your mom gets better, move out of the house. My mom also has a lot of health problems too and she works 7 days/week. The only thing I can do to pay her back is to get in dental school....

Anyway, i hope your mom gets better soon and hopefully you wont turn down any acceptance next round if they ever accept you again.

Dude, metaphorically speaking I wanna strangle you!!!!! So where are the other DS schools located?????

I agree with Doc.

People spend their lives trying to get into dental school...i will never understand why anyone would turn down an acceptance(s) because they did not get into their school of choice. Applying is a tedious and expensive affair. Why do it again if you already have an acceptance?
