Hi everyone.

I am a nontraditional student planning on starting my premed prerequisites this coming Sep. However, there has been some changee of plan and decided to start this Summer. I am just not too sure which class to take this summer.

This below was my tentative schedule for the next two years.

Summer '09
1) ??????

FALL '09
1) Chem I (2) Bio I (3) Cal I -for natural science major-

SPRING '10
1) Chem. II (2) Bio. II (3) Cal. II -for natural science major-

SUMMER '10
1) Org. Chem. I & II or Phy. I & II

FALL '10
1) BioChem (2) Phy I or Org. Chem. I(3) Statistics

SPRING '11
1) Mcat Preparation (2) Phy. II or Org. Chem. II (3) English Lit. (4) English Comp.

SUMMER '11, take MCAT

6/1/11 ish, apply to AMCAS

FALL '12
--MED SCHOOL-- (if everything goes right)

Any suggestion? Thanks all

Take the summer off. Not a lot you can take that's science related without any of the pre-requisites.

Or, you could find classes that interest you, or classes you've always wanted to take/think you could get good grades in and use it as a post-bac GPA boost...couldn't hurt . If you have the tuition money, why not? You might be happy you have a few extra credits of A's after finishing some of the med school pre-reqs.

I'm kind of on the same schedule, but very much accelerated. I'm also non-trad, but not so far back. My English classes have already been taken, first time taking science pre-reqs.

Summer Term A - Chem I
Summer Term B - Chem II
Fall 09 - Organic Chem I, Physics I, Biology I, Cal I (retake for DO GPA purposes)
Spring 10 - Organic Chem II, Physics II, Biology II, other misc classes for DO retakes
Late April 10 - MCAT
June 10 - Apply DO, MD, Caribbean

So if I were you, and you wanted to go DO, I'd retake anything you didn't do well in the first time around this summer.

well, I would like to take something and get some prereq. classes out of the way so that I can take more advanced level science classes later on....

I was thinking about taking Bio I & II at CC and take more advanced Bio classes at CSULB which is a 4 year state univ.

How does that sound?

You could always take your Lit and Composition classes this summer. I know I'll probably get flamed for this, but you could also take an EMT class and get certified EMT-Basic. I know some interns that said they were doing EMT work for a semester or two before applying to med school. I think opinions on SDN are mixed about how effective this is, but I thought I'd put it out there for ya.

I'm doing pretty much what you are. I took Bio I & II and Chem I & II this year at cc. Taking O-Chem I & II this summer at the same cc, but taking Physics I and Biochemistry at the local uni in the Fall.

do you think its alright to take those prerequisites at cc?

i would suggest taking Gen Chem I and II in the summer
and then Organic during the fall and spring...

I just feel that more detailed study of organic would be useful rather than breezing through it in the summer
others might disagree and say that they wud rather get it over with in a couple months..but i liked organic

if you do take classes this summer and next summer...u will finish your mcat prereqs
then you will have semesters later which will have a lighter load = more time to study for MCAT 🙂

Good Luck!

Actually
I agree with whoever said to take English Comp and Lit this summer too
It would be great to get those out of the way, and they would be easier over the summer if you have a good professor

And your not cutting down any useful stuff you could learn for MCAT from the science pre-reqs by taking it over the summer

And I guess taking gen-eds at a cc would "look better" than taking chem

Just one down side...while you are prepping for MCAT in Spring'11, you will be taking either organic or physics, so you won't completely be done with thoes classes...

Good Luck again, and I hope I didn't confuse you

Thanks for the replies

Well, I was thinking, since I am such a non traditional student, I was thinking about taking advanced level English classes in 300 level courses. However the local CC here only has up to 200 level.

So I was thinking about maybe taking Phy I (no Phy II in the summer) and maybe Calculus I. Chem I and II looks kind of ugly trying to fit in this summer in terms of time and etc...

Would it be alright to take these classes at local CC? I know that others do think its ok as long as I take all the other classes at 4 yr univ. but since Physics is such an important class, I wasn't too sure....

Is Calculus considered as lower level or advanced level?

Doing orgo I and II in one summer may very well kick your ass. Orgo definitely needs one full regular semester for each part. You could probably do both physics classes in one summer though.

Is Phy I and II "weed out courses"????

I definitely don't recommend taking Orgo in the summer unless you have a LOT of time on your hands. It's a really rigorous course. I'm taking physics next semester (and it's calculus based, as I'm an engineering major); so I can't really speak for you there either. I honestly recommend taking some of the core classes you need to graduate from the university (e.g.: English composition, English Literature) if you want to take classes in the summer.

physics isn't easy...but i don't think its as "weed out" as organic...

i think if you do like u said, take calc I and physics I over the summer, and then take the rest at the 4 yr university... it can show that u just took it at a cc to save money, or easier commute, or whatever else...

just make sure you do just as well at calc II and physics II at the 4 yr uni as at the cc
