Hi all,

I was wondering, how much orgo is likely to appear on the B.S. section?

Also, I've been doing the princeton review science workbook for my orgo practice but I know it's harder than the real deal....Any advice on what I can use that's more similar to the real MCAT?

I hear BR is solid, but they are expensive as heck...EK 1001 orgo questions are fairly cheap on ebay....

Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks in advance

Study the orgo, all of the orgo. My test today had 3 organic passages. It caugt me totally off guard because I spent almost no time on organic prep.

i had 3 organic passages on the 5/22 test. Don't slack off on it! I think the 3 most recent tests, as a general rule, have had 3 passages organic or at least 2+ a handful of hard organic discretes.

rawr.

So I guess TBR orgo passages are solid...but they are pretty expensive.

How are EK's orgo passages? Similar to the real deal? I hope they are because they are much cheaper than TBR

Well, AAMC says that orgo is only supposed to be 25% of the BS section...

.....I think we all know that is a lie though.

My exam (6/18, 8 am) had 3 orgo passages, each of which was accompanied by a bunch of mechanisms. Even though most people will tell you that you don't need to know mechanisms for the MCAT, I would definitely recommend making sure you know how reaction mechanisms work. If you know how the mechanism works and how stuff moves around, you won't have to waste time reading the reaction explanations. For my exam, I didn't even bother reading the passages since they don't say anything other than explain what happens each step of the reaction. Even if you don't remember every reaction mechanism, just know the general form, i.e. know how carboxylic acids undergo reactions and you'll know how almost any carb. acid derivative reaction.

Are the mechanisms/reactions what the MCAT focused on for orgo? How about stereochemistry, SN1, SN2, E2, E1 details, and the other parts of orgo that focus on structure only...

you got to know sn1,sn2,e1,e2,stereochemistry,nmr....all of it

Unless you truly can't afford TBR books, buy them. It's like a legal way of paying for a better score on the MCAT. 20 or 30 bucks more could make the difference between a 30 and a 34, an acceptance or a rejection. Wouldn't you pay a little more if it helped you get accepted somewhere...Anyways, I'll stop being preachy, but yeah, get the TBR books. Keep them in good condition and then sell them on here/ebay and get more than half your money back. It'll help you in the long-run and you'll forget about those few extra bucks.

Buy TBR and do every f'ing passage in every one of their books.

It's the only thing I've seen that resembles the real deal, period.

Organic Chemistry as a Second Language by David R. Klein and Organic Chemistry II as a Second Language by the same author are great books for Organic.. Check them out

What do EK, TBR and TPR stand for?
Examkrackers, The Berkeley Review, The Princeton Review. There is a TPR big book and a TPR hyperlearning book only offered from the courses, however you can sometimes find the hyperlearning book (which is highly recommended, big book supposedly sucks) on eBay, or the forsale section on this website, etc. TBR, google for their website, you have to pay by money order or cash, but money order is preferred for quickest method, instructions are on their website. Examkrackers ochem can be found anywhere, I recommend finding the ISBN number from amazon.com or something and then putting it into directtextbooks.com and searching for the cheapest price.

On a side note, I hope TBR ochem questions are very similar to the actual MCAT cause I've been getting 13's and 14's on the passages so far (by far my best subject, i get owned pretty bad in some of the PS passages).. then again I haven't hit the 2nd book yet.

all i have is EK ORgo and TPR Orgo at my disposal, will this work, only a month left til the test
I'm sure that will be sufficient, just make sure you have passages to work with, which I think TPR provides an abundant quantity if I remember right... so you should be good.
