What's your degree?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
B.A. Psychology, expected may 2010
My school does not have minors or concentrations, but every senior is required to complete a full year thesis, and mine will be in the neuroscience field.

Can you share what your doing for your thesis? I assisted in some research for some friends' thesis work on purkinje cells, and neurobiology inter-relates in interesting ways with ethology.

Pchem is the only thing stopping me from a minor in Chemistry. I don't figure I'll need it for anything of import and everyone I've talked to said they'd rather give up their first born then take it again, so I'm not even going to bother.

Hey now, p-chem can be really cool! I liked it so much I went and got a master's in it too🙂! I even got to TA it while in grad school, although that experience taught me that most people don't love it... I love physics too, which I gather is not a common love either.

BA Chemistry (ACS accredited)
BA Physics

MS Chemistry (Physical)

I <3 Physics sooooo much, if I hadn't gotten in this year i was considering going back for a second degree 😍

OK, so what's a PI? And ethology? I guess that's what i get for not being a science major 😛. AS chemistry, BA History (concentration on German & American) with a chem minor. I'm surprised i"m the first history major to post on this, I met 3 others during my Penn interview, sitting at the same table as me!

I also have the above unrequited love of physics... I study it now in my spare time... have been reading "The Physics of Star Trek" for about 3 years now... and it's only about 200 pages if that 😀... but I sprinkle it with some Hawkins, Einstein, Heisenberg, and of course The Complete Idiots Guide to Theories of the Universe... One of my 2 major research papers in undergrad was on Werner Heisenberg and the German Atomic Bomb project 🙄. Loves it.

BA: Linguistics
Minor(s): Portuguese, Mandarin.

...yup...

One of my best friends was a Linguistics major and minored in Japanese. Sometimes we'd have homework parties (woo) and she'd be sitting there making very strange noises over and over and she'd ask us to say words for her. I don't think I'll ever be able to hear the difference between "cot" and "caught" hehe, now she's doing a Fulbright and studying a language only spoken in one tiny village in Mali, go figure.

Geeky as it is I have a soft spot for physics too. I never really took difficult physics courses, just the ones required, but I loved learning how every day objects functioned. When our instructor started talking about how magic tricks, polarized glasses, mirages, airplanes, CDs and DVDs, vacuum cleaners and all other manner of things worked I just couldn't get enough. And then I ended up taking a SCUBA course and they talked about buoyancy, pressure, etc etc and I got an even bigger appreciation for it.

W00t physics! 😍

BA in Biological Sciences (honors)
considering a minor in Italian

Curious, how many of you theoretical physic's lovers are women? I too love that stuff (My cats name is Schrodinger), but it tends to be a male fascination, just wondering.

Lady here. That's a great name for a cat🙂 If I remember right the main character on Sliders had a cat named Schrodinger!

So many women!!! Why are we all female?

I think most people are women who apply to vet school anyway. A lot of people are white too for some reason. Pharmacy is becoming a lot of women too with medicine along with it. Hmm maybe that is the next thread I will post.

If I ever get a cat, I will have to consider the name Schrodinger! I was just at a party last week where a woman was wearing that "the cat is dead" on the front and "the cat is alive" or whatever on the back shirt. Always makes me smile to see stuff like that!

I'm a woman... but I agree that it is still a male dominated field. Or at least it was when I was in school (over 10 years ago, so maybe it is changing?). I was one of two female physics majors, granted there were only 8 of us total, so the statistics may not be valid due to sample size.

Female here 🙂. And you'll get a kick out of this....

http://icanhascheezburger.com/2007/06/02/im-in-ur-quantum-box/

I have that on my MySpace profile 😀

I bought Schrodinger's book but I got so excited about M theory right after I bought it, I never ended up reading it. Maybe it'll be next if I ever finish Star Trek

Sunstorm -
Not sure exactly, as I don't start thesising until next fall. There's a good chance that it'll have something to do with ghrelin and eating behavior, as that's my professor's niche. I'd also love to look at the administration of SSRIs to aggressive dogs, but since I'm limited to rat models, I'm not sure how far that idea will go.

BA in Biology (or, will have in a few years)
I'm probably going to end up a course or two short of both an English minor and a government minor, but have no interest in trying to make either work out.

I find it really interesting how many have biology/chemistry combinations. My school doesn't let us do major/minor combinations if there is more than a two course overlap and the biology major requires at least three chemistry courses. I guess that's part of the liberal arts thing.

I bought Schrodinger's book but I got so excited about M theory right after I bought it, I never ended up reading it.

My PI told me the Schrodinger Equation is/was one of the most difficult equation in physics (to grasp/understand/derive). Also something really questionable about how he developed it, some form of leap that was greater then Einsteins Theory of Relativity or something. Dunno if its true, but after reading the wiki of it, i believe him.

BTW, named my cat that because he was diagnosed w/ FIV as a kitten, and I told my mom he would be dead in a year (little fib) - He's 9'ish now 😎

BS in Animal Sciences, Pre-Vet Concentration
Minor in Chemistry

I also really enjoyed Physics... especially Electricity & Magnetism, Modern (Physics II) mmm... 😍

Well from what i understand, it's impossible to prove... but it's also impossible to disprove. So it's just kind of hanging out, seemingly the theory of everything, but also the theory of nothing 😛. I really need to read it now... the thing I don't get is how an infinite number of dimensions can lead to Quantum Leap lol... I love that show, but a world where the USSR won the cold war, and where Elvis never died, and where Washington never became president... and where I never got into vet school... that's all pretty hard to swallow 😀

So many women!!! Why are we all female?
Well, I'm not really interested in the way physics relating to space works (I still don't get Event Horizons) such as black holes and the ilk but if you can consider an 'interest in theoretical physics' as string theory/membrane theory and the like, then there's at least one male amongst the pre-vetters interested in such a field. (that was a really long sentence...)

Though I think 'Dark Matter' is a joke, but like I said, me and Space don't get along well.

Female. I enjoy physics but that may be due to my interest in how things work...and how well math and life integrates, which is prevalent in physics!

So many women!!! Why are we all female?

You know what, I'm just going to come out and say it. After 4 years undergrad, watching all my guy friends taking Sociology and Education with the ladies, I am finally being vidicated. Vet school is bringing the 2-3 women of all the science classes across the country together, and im going to enjoy every min. of it (well, every minute my g/f lets me)

Uhh... Shanomong, did you even bother to read the equation?

= Elvis NOT dead - Obviously physics isn't for everyone

I will be getting a BS in Animal Science. Kind of boring to talk about but I LOVE my major. Also, I was going to minor in Genetics and Nutrition, but I chose instead to try and finish the one main degree in three years.

BS in chemical engineering and an MBA

(I now thank my lucky stars for that engineering degree after studying cardiovascular fluid mechanics in EXCRUCIATING detail)

NO KIDDING!

And then there's feedback mechanisms a la Process Control.

And my recent fave...the Physics of Radiology.

BTW, named my cat that because he was diagnosed w/ FIV as a kitten, and I told my mom he would be dead in a year (little fib) - He's 9'ish now 😎

Out of curiosity, did you ever have him retested to confirm that he was in fact actually FIV positive?

BS in Mechanical Engineering

LoL, yeah, test was an ELISA Ab test initially - Later on I did an antigen WB (least thats how I recall it)

I haven't really kept up on the literature. IIRC, the virus isn't always passed through the placenta? and he probably got the Ab from mothers milk - hence the + on the ELISA Ab test and the - on the WB antigen one. That's how I remember it anyway.

I just needed a little something to convince the parental units to let me take the cat. Now he's a household fixture. Like I said, fib 🙂

Very cool! Lucky kitty.

Was just curious if you ever retested as we had a cat come through the emergency clinic recently that was 10 years old and had tested FIV positive as a kitten. Because it was FIV positive the owners let it live outside because they didn't want it to infect the other cats in the household. The doc had them test it again thinking it highly unlikely it would have survived 10 years outdoors if it was FIV positive and come to find out it wasn't. Had been a false positive as a kitten and banished to live out doors every since because of it. Was kind of sad, but made me really happy for the cat.

I had to read that 3 times to realize you meant space as in outerspace, not the dimension.... since string theory and m theory and all that badass goodness are very space-as-in-the-dimension oriented. ahhh the English language 😀

Uhh... Shanomong, did you even bother to read the equation?

And my recent fave...the Physics of Radiology.
So looking forward to that... though I've been told I'll be disappointed. According to a vet at work, nothing in vet med goes beyond basic middle school math.....

BA History (concentration on German & American) with a chem minor. I'm surprised i"m the first history major to post on this

Don't worry! I majored in History, and so did one of my classmates.

Haha, I have to admit that when I saw BSE, I paused aswell (by the way, we're all geeks). I have a B.S. in Animal Science and in Biological Sciences (class of 2007), and I'm earning my M.S. in Animal Biology (to finish this spring/early summer).

B.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and I'm working on my M.S. in Geochemistry

B.S. in Animal Sciences
Minors: Equine Science, International Agriculture, and Spanish

I love, love, loved studying animal science! Learning to speak Spanish was also a big priority so I went abroad for a semester. Not very many people in the College of Ag study abroad, and it took me an extra semester to graduate as a result, but it was totally worth it!

Yea, nothing past middle school math. To say it's dumbed-down a bit is an understatement. The physics of radiology was all just theory and no numbers. Like non-calculus based physics, are you KIDDING me???

BS: Zoo Science

I pretty much picked this major just so I could go to the zoo for field trips and labs since it was supposed to be more of a zookeeper training program.
EqSc I think we may have gone to the same school.

I think the teachers at vet school have more problems figuring out their own math than the students do (ahem Epidemiology/Pharmacology)

Do I sense a little bit of sarcasm? 😛

AS in Life Sciences
BS in Biology
BS in Equine Administration w/ minor in Equestrian Science (finish December 09)

If I don't get accepted..then graduate school here I come!!!
I'm trying to be in the Guinness Book of World Records for obtaining the most degrees while waiting to be accepted into vet school. Would I get a diversity point for that!! 👍

B.S. Animal Science

M.S. Veterinary Parasitology (August 2009)

I am so ready to get out!!!! I did awesome research that will really help me in the future but my PI was/is a nutbag and had NO appreciation for the fact that I wanted to continue on to vet school instead of a PhD.

But I will say that I think vet student should have more respect for research. I have been a TA for two professional veterinary courses and I am very disappointed in the lack of appreciation for the research field. Many of the students can't understand how that information got into their expensive textbooks

How do veterinarians get vaccines? Anthelmintics? Antibiotics?
Hmmmm RESEARCH anyone?

BS in Biology
BS in Math
Minor in Chem

And I loved Physics! Its science and math combined!

BS Entomology with minors in microbiology evolution & ecology
PhD candidate entomology (molecular evolution)

it would be awesome if any of the schools I applied to cared about my coursework or academic achievements following a poor general chemistry performance
