When is Viagra going generic?

If I remember correctly, once a drug is discovered, it stay brand for 17 years from the date of the drug's discovery.

According to Wikipedia, the source for all our answers....."The drug was patented in 1996, approved for use in erectile dysfunction by the US Food and Drug Administration on March 27, 1998."

So for a generic to come out...maybe in 2013?

Or in 2011 as crazybob mentioned 😛

So does that mean that brand can't be touched until 15 years or 17 years?

EDIT: FDA changed it to 20 years....wow.

The drug was approved back in 96-98 and the patent is expiring in '11, which is 15 years later.

So if I were to "discover" a drug in 2010 and by the time I could make the drug into something profitable in 2020, that would mean I would have only 10 years left for the patent to be expired, right?

That's correct.
 
Easiest way to extend the patent is to introduce a long acting formulation to compete with Cialis. Next step is to market the active isomer or some slight variation of the molecule.

I am just amused at how it went from 10 dollars a pill when I first started to almost 17 dollars a tab now. Talk about inflation.. down there

We have a customer call it his "Disney World pill" because it's an hour long wait for a 5 minute ride. Lmao.
 
Ever heard of a drug called Sutent? I got an order for it today on an ICU patient, AWP was close to 10K for 28 50mg caps 😱
 
Viagra's patent was probably extended because it has the indication for pulmonary hypertension, an orphaned disease.

Revatio is the branded form of sildenafil that is indicated for pulmonary HTN (manufactured of course by Viagra's maker, Pfizer), so I don't think Viagra's patent would be extended for that reason.

Though I'm sure they will fight tooth and nail to get that done, Viagra is too much of a cash cow to just let it go...

Wow, thats a random question in the generic Viagra post. It is an oral med for renal carcinoma. Works best on clear cell renal carcinoma which are less than 10% of all renal carcinomas. Very expensive. We had a patient on it who also had medicare Part D. First RX of the year they were in and out of the doughnut hole.

Pfizer talked Ranbaxy into not selling generic lipitor for an extra 20 months, so you wont be seeing generic lipitor until probably the end of next year

Even though Revatio is lower dose some people only need 20mg or less to help them with their ED.
If they got their doctor to write for this even though they don't have pulmonary hypertension, they can get 90 tablets for 20 dollars, instead of 1 for 17 dollars.
Would this be insurance fraud, and could the insurance later come back and charge the patient for it? Could the Dr get in trouble?

Sounds like insurance fraud to me. Kinda like when people are quartering 5mg finasteride tablets to save money on Propecia. Except there is a much smaller patient population with pulmonary HTN vs. BPH, so I'm guessing the insurance companies would be more likely to go after the docs who did that.
 
Physicians are allowed to prescribe off-label. They just have to be honest about the sig. Make it "Revatio 20mg qday prn" and its not fraud. Now if you make it TID on the script to get 90 of them...then that is fraud.

But 'f it...you can get it for $1.50 a tab from Canada.
 
Most insurances do require a PA for Revatio and other Pulmonary hypertension drugs due to costs and with regards to Revatio, fears about improper prescribing.

PL has Viagra going generic in 2020 but Revatio is this year in September.

Reminds me of the time I was a call screener for a radio show in high school. We did a political show one time and the topic was "Who are you voting for President and why?". The host told me to only keep the interesting people and dump the generic, one dimensional callers. One call went like this.

Me: thanks for calling, what's your first name?
Her: my name is Karen
Me: ok Karen, what do you want to talk about?

Levitra is only $9 a pill at Walmart. Use that...can't get any cheaper than that. LOL

My first job out of school was at a mail order facility, and there was one pharmacist who had a desk job, and he was almost totally bald even though he was barely 40 at the time. His head would turn red whenever he heard the word "Caverject", and people would say that word just to watch his head turn red. It never stopped being funny.

Odd, baldness makes you think higher testosterone, and less need for "assistance." Unless he was having some ADR from finasteride. If you're almost completely bald, probably not taking anything for it.
