"OMG II!!! So excited!! *_*!!!" ----> "II 8/29 (thu), SC 8/1, cGpa 3.7, 35 MCAT, URM"

Would be so OMG awesome! Because you know someone's gonna ask.

I agree with you that this is more helpful for the sdn community, but it's also not really that wise to put all of that information as it would be pretty easy for a student interviewer or adcom member to know exactly who you are. I may be paranoid, but that's why I avoid doing that.

There are so few URM students that interview that just identifying as URM and giving your MCAT score + GPA alone could give us away to adcoms

If you've every been to a medical school interview you'll understand why URMs are URMs.

URM here, 4 interviews scheduled so far this season. No pre interview rejections yet from other schools. Soli Deo Gloria!

It's not even URM that would give you away. There are so few interviewees on any particular day that the combination of your GPA, MCAT, and interview date will give you away (it gets even easier when you add in your complete and II dates).

This is especially true for MSTP applicants where you have maybe 6 people for each interview date with a wide range of GPA and MCAT. It's the whole reason why I don't post which interviews I get. In fact, thanks to the small MSTP applicant pool in general it's also why I don't post in school specific threads. All you have to do is click my name, go to "view created threads", and search for my WAMC thread and you know who I am.

Meh, I seriously think some people here are way too paranoid about being "discovered" by ADCOMs. You really think they have time to scour these forums for hours on end trying to match SDN handles to names? Please.

Even if they did figure it out, who cares? Might even be a positive.

"Hey look, this person is so concerned about their future that they actually spend extra time on a message board dedicated to medicine. Give this man an acceptance immediately!"

Well... umm... hmmm.. In-depth detective work? No... I'm not going to go through that much trouble.

But what I find amusing are people with MDApps accounts who say some really stupid s*** on here.

When you interview at a school they only get to see how you act for a short time; what you do and say on here hangs around a lot longer. And the MDApps stuff is specifically designed to make you easy to identify. So if you have one of those accounts, and you advertise that you have one, and you tell a school that you have one... then keep your composure on here professional. Just a recommendation.

This is a bit of a tangent, I admit.

+1. Just use SDN in a professional and mature manner, and you don't have to worry if you're discovered or not. It's not like you get penalized for having an account or asking/answering a lot of questions.

This. If you feel you have to hide your identity on this forum, then you're doing something wrong.

I've met a couple of my classmates who have identified me from this forum, as the kids say these days, nbd.

I agree completely with this. If someone is afraid of their identity being found on SDN then that person is conducting themselves in an inappropriate manner.

No offense but after your ridiculous post about what you apparently think goes through girl's heads when you talk to them at bars, I can take literally nothing you say seriously. Just FYI

I've gone to interviews where I've identified half the people there to their SDN names. Having this info did nothing for me other than satisfy a curiosity. I've also had some early experiences with some people from my school who have identified me and have caused lots of problems for me (they've since failed out). I can see both point of views on this.

edit: towards the end of the interview cycle I will post in each school specific thread with some info to "give back" though, just not in real time

Well, at the very least, for those that aren't concerned about anonymity an Adcom finding out who they are (which is very different from friends finding out who you are--which is maybe harder just from gpa/mcat/sc alone), using that format would probably be helpful. 👍

In my case, I use mdapps for that purpose so all of my interview stuff is collected in a single place to be convenient and helpful for others that want to know in the future if doing a search. I'm pretty easily identifiable if you know anything about my application, but that's fine since I would openly welcome a discussion about my posts or even SDN in general if someone wanted one.

Agreed. Don't want there to be any chance of someone else reading the offensive and immature things you posted on the Internet? Solution: don't say offensive or immature things on the Internet. With a couple of exceptions, maybe, there is nothing I've said on here I would really mind if anyone at a school I applied to saw. That's why I'm pretty loose with my identity/numbers/etc.

I seriously doubt adcoms would spend time on SDN looking through people's mdapps and matching them to applicants. Fellow interviewers may identify you at an interview but so what? It's not like they have a say in whether you get accepted or not..

No, but there are many adcom members, both faculty and student, who regularly use SDN, and if they see someone being rude or exceptionally unprofessional, and that person has an MDApps or is otherwise very identifiable and is applying to that adcom's school, that doesn't bode well for the applicant.

This is spot on.

There is also that horror story from last cycle.

But wasn't that person being horribly rude and unprofessional? Or did something equally dumb like mention it on facebook or something?

As for me, I'm pretty much the same here as I would be in real life (minus some choice 4 letter words of course 😛 ) so I'm not really terribly anonymous. I figure as long as one conducts oneself in a decent matter, they have nothing to worry about. Besides, its not like we go to interviews telling others our MCATs and GPAs and whatnot. Also, I think MDApps is a great tool for informing others about schools, giving hope to those with average to below average stats (if its accurate of course). If I'm found out in an interview, big deal, I'll be happy to talk to you guys and I think it's actually cool to put faces to the people I've chatted with here.

"Hey look, this person is so concerned about their future that they actually spend extra time on a message board dedicated to medicine. Give this man an acceptance immediately!"

Of course no one's going to go searching this forum for people. However, it's a known fact that the school specific threads are visited often by students and adcom members, so if you decide to post in those threads with your MDApps attached to your profile or post your stats in the thread, expect to be identified.

As for why you should be concerned, it's not because you might have said anything legitimately bad. Rather, it could be that things you've posted on here don't mesh with what you told an adcom ("I want to be a primary care doc!" isn't going to seem as believable when one of your started threads is "how do I maximize my chances of matching into derm?"), or maybe an adcom member just doesn't like something inane about your profile. For example, perhaps their thought won't be "this person really cares about his future because he spends all this time on this site!" but "this person is a neurotic gunner! Look at his post count!"

Paranoid? Perhaps. But according to adcom members on here it's happened before.

I'm surprised by how literally people took that post. I was originally going to make a post in that thread to explain since everyone apparently took it the wrong way, but I didn't think it was worth the effort over a topic so ridiculous. That said, I'm sorry I bruised your pre-med ego by suggesting that girls won't find you irresistible because you're in med school.

+1 to the MAX!

I've been the only black person at all of my interviews so far and I doubt that will change throughout the season.

That's dumb.

One of my favorite things to do when I'm bored is to troll on the internet.

That says nothing about who I am as a person in real life.

I mean it's the internet and it's funny and entertaining (imo) to watch people get riled up about a topic that you don't care about and you post just to watch the show.

Normally I would agree, but if there is a legitimate (if remote) possibility of being identified by someone whose opinion matters, I think it's best to keep your nose clean.

dont understand, can you explain? pm if necessary.

I think he's trying to say that there's not a lot of URMs that get invited to interviews so in one interview group, there may be just 1 black or 1 Latino person compared to >10 white or Asian people.

From the one interview that I've been to so far, there was not a single black interviewee. If there was one and he happened to have a mdapps or was active on SDN, then it'd be pretty easy to identify him/her

I've yet to see an AA at an interview as well. That being said; I don't really believe in this act professional advice for the Internet. I personally am glad to see what people really think without fear of being PC or ousted based on their opinions. I'm also glad that people can get exposed for who they really are, because too often you hear about so and so acting like an ass and someone being surprised about it. Hooray for interwebz.

I can tell you for a fact that they do look at these forums, at least the ones regarding their school.

I brought up an issue vaguely related to an SDN thread (I was careful when I asked) in an interview a couple of weeks ago and the interviewer immediately said "I've read that on SDN," then he addressed the question.
