Hello SDNers,
I just thought I would write this post as a followup to my breakdown and to give others struggling with schoolwork/apps/DATs some hope.
I was just admitted to Dental school for the 2010 cycle. I received the call as I was about to submit my application for the 2011 cycle (glad I saved the money). NYU was my top choice. Here are some of my stats which may give others on SDN some new found hope.
My undergrad GPA was low at 2.9 As a result, I decided to enter a 2-year graduate program to obtain a master's in biology. Turns out I finished it in 1 year, with a 3.92 GPA. During my second semester in the graduate program, I picked up DAT Destroyer, Cliffs AP Bio, Campbells, and Crackdat and just hit the books. I was consistently working 20 hours a week to make some money. I scored a 22TS 20AA and 17 PAT ( 🙁 )
For some reason, something told me to apply for the 2010 cycle, even though it was already January (bad decision...apply EARLY). I applied only to one school, my top choice which luckily did not close applications until February. I was called in for an interview in April. The interview was rough and tough in every sense of the way. I thought it had gone badly, but the next week I was waitlisted. Last Tuesday I received news that I had been admitted to the program. Throughout the whole process, I was extremely persistent. Anytime the school needed any sort of documentation or anything I was sure to deliver it in person. I showed my face as much as possible, and got to know the admissions staff. This helped tremendously. So I know some guys on here have monster scores and killer apps, but do not be discouraged. Keep on track, study hard, do well, and persevere. That is my best advice. Keep working and learning. SDN is a great source, and I learned a lot not only from checking posts, but also contributing and trying to answer questions. I can not say I did everything right to get accepted, in fact, I probably did everything wrong apart from studying. So thank you to all the SDNers for their advice. Please feel free to PM me with any questions. I think I have really learned a lot throughout the whole process. Good luck and remember do not give up on your dreams. Work hard and make them happen.
