Hi all,

You probably are all aware that I'm starting Gen Surg clerkship out in SD in a couple days. I'm curious uniforms vs scrubs while on service. Is it possible to come into the hospital wearing my khakis and then immediately change into scrubs, wear those scrubs all day (in the OR and on the ward), and at the end of the day change back into uniform?

Also, how grueling is the Gen Surg clerkship in SD? I realize the Navy isn't paying for me to do a 1 month vacation, but I'd love to get a chance to see a Padre's game and maybe head up to LA to visit some friends.

My advice is to call your commanding officer and find out what the uniform requirements are. They are different from base to base, group to group, etc. The only way to know is to ask whoever your boss-to-be.

Best of luck!

Umm...probably don't want to call a 2-star to ask what uniform to wear. Just show up in whites, bring your khakis, and plan on wearing scrubs 90% of the time. Some of the surgical clinics want interns/studs in uniform during clinic.

I did trauma surgery there for my internship surgery rotation. The hours were brutal, but there was enough energy to do stuff in the evening.

Definitely take 1 pair of khakis/whites and then expect to be in scrubs during non-clinic hours.

i did my surgery sub-i there 7 years ago...i stayed at the sub base, worked very hard, hooked up with a hot local chic, and overall had a blast. have fun there. there are some good people in SD. wear scrubs as much as possible. i cam to work so early in the am, no one was around to see me walk in in shorts and my flip-flops...and i left after everyone went home, the uni was a non issue.

Now that i'm back, here's what happened.

Shorts and polo shirt to work. Quick change into scrubs. AFter work, change back into shorts and polo shirt. Then, head to the bar/beach.

I didn't bring whites. I wore my khakis while in clinic.

The service was fairly slow...Thus, it was one fun sub-I in sunny SD.

Bobbyseal-
How would you rate your GS rotation in SD: Positive, neutral, negative?
Did/do you want to be a GS for the Navy? Has that changed post-SD rotation?
Just curious as I'm hoping to do a GS Navy rotation too.

Was Capt Hemp still around SD? CT/vascular guy. The coolest.

Never met him. I don't think he was around at the time.
