Nah but he used to be for a while. He's at Hopkins now and transferred out some time back.

Thanks GujuDoc,

I am so impressed by your knowledge about Florida Schools and students! Amazing, you are like ambassador who knows it all about anything in Florida.

Ha. Sent you a PM. I wasn't trying to offend you or jump your case, I guess its hard to accurately convey mood via online text. Sorry if I did either.

LOL. Yeah it definitely is hard to convey tone. I know I've come off in a way not meant to come off in the past as well. On a more serious note though, while the percentages are as high as you have reported it is still the hardest school in Florida to get into.

i've known several friends to get into all the other schools and some out of state schools that are in the top 30 but not get into UF and put on hold but never given a flat rejection, waitlist, or acceptance.

Happened to quite a few people I knew a couple years back as well as a couple I knew of last year.

That is so unfair to students!! I can not think of anything as cruel as putting someone in limbo for the entire year.

Yeah. One of the friends this happened to ended up at Miami. He's a year ahead of MCMD. This also happened to a former SDN poster. I don't know why they are like that. They also have this thing where they give out less acceptances on Oct 15th then say USF, but they put some people on hold and then wait til December to give more acceptances when they've interviewed more people. But in the spring semester they tell you like pretty quickly because that's much later into the game. I don't know if it will be different this year but that's how it was last year.

hahaha. Too many friends who are already in my friend. That's why I know all this. Oh and on the subject of the poster you were asking about, I met him once a few years back when I went to see my roommate present at a research conference and remembered when he first posted on SDN it was to decide whether to stay here or go to his current school. that's why I felt ok about posting his information, otherwise I wouldn't have said it publicly.

I have sadly heard this happen to many many students.

I'd contact REL and see what he says about this but generally they want regular calculus I, but there are 2 substitutes that may be used....Calculus for Biology majors or engineering calculus.

USF doesn't require Calculus at all.

USF doesn't require Calculus at all.

I do not know of any Florida Med School that specifically requires Calculas. Two semesters of college math will take care of that requirement for all florida institutions.

USF doesn't require Calculus at all.

When I looked at their website a few years back they required one semester for Calculus.

Ok so the website says recommended but still I remember a few years ago saying they preferred you would have it. Or so that's what a few students told me. You can ask REL what their take on that is.

Yeah, I think you're right, I think it used to be required for at least some schools...otherwise I wouldn't have suffered through calculus with the awful, awful teacher that I had. Calc wasn't hard, but my teacher was crazy!!

i stupidly didnt realize that not sending in transcripts before submitting my application would place my processing time on hold. Bah, i submitted my application a week ago and am still waiting for amcas/aacomas to process my transcripts. i fail at life, :: cries ::

Are you a Florida resident??????? I asked you this in another thread on the MCAT forum.

Wow guys I can't beleive next week is october (one week until USF interview and three weeks for Aug MCAT scores)...and that mean my interview is next week. I'm so excited but I just hope I get rid of this horrible cold by that time. Looks like my p-chem prof is going to be a bit anger when I tell him I won't be in class (oh well thats my one miss for the semester).

Good luck to everyone this week!!:luck:

FSU called this morning. Good times.

Congrats on the good news!!!

I'm trying to get in touch with them now. They left me a message while I was taking the worst p-chem test of my life! So hopefully, I'll have some good news in a little while!

Good luck americanangel and TPROrgoTutor. These interviews are low stress events so do not let yourself become anxious before the event just because you have too many of them, that is great. The type of questions they ask are really trying to figure out if you have an opinion on issues, it does not matter which side are you on as long is you can talk about it intelligently, you will be okey.

For some reason, REL showed no love last application cycle, so I can't speak about USF's interviews. (That's ok REL, no hard feelings....I think the only deciding factor for me to have gone to USF last year *would have* been because we get free admission to Busch Gardens since my husband is military...haha)

But anyways, I LOVED my FSU interview!! It is so down to earth and the facilities and the rooms (I don't remember what they call them)...are amazing! I think the hardest thing I had to do last year was relinquish my seat at FSU...I think I may have even cried. Anyways, good luck to all of you that have interviews soon!!

I know what you are talking about. We took a tour of FSU med school when we went up for the forum in the 2004-2005 school year. It was an unofficial tour but some of the med students were kind enough to show us those rooms.

They are called learning community suites I believe. They are extremely beautiful. They are pretty much like a mini lounge for the first and second years. Essentially they comprise of 2 floors. One floor consists of several of these mini lounges for the first years and the other floor is the same thing for the second years.

In each of these lounges there is a full conference room which is a separate room within the lounge. The rest of each of the lounges are like a one bedroom apartment. There are no beds but there is a full kitchen with stove, fridge, microwave, etc. There is a full bathroom with a shower. There are couches and relaxer chairs. There is a full business copier machine. The kind of copier that can do faxing, copying, direct feed with stapling it for you etc. In other words, those kind of copiers that you see in a leasing office or in a place like Staples or Procopy or Kinkos.

Essentially you can live out of those learning communities suites. They are shared between smaller groups of students who use it to get together to study. But I believe they essentially can be a place to crash when you don't want to go home if you are studying late night. That's the nice thing about them.

The downside to FSU is the lack of clinical facilities that are nearby. But I can't comment on specifics of the curricula because I only know USF's curricula and what they do.

Thanks for the info you guys....I'm looking forward to seeing the campus and speaking to everyone.

FSU called me this morning, I was in class (P-chem also, hehe), but i called ms. calloway back, im flyin into tallahassee to interview oct13 there, then renting a car drivin to tampa to spend the weekend wit my family and interviewin USF oct16, should be a good weekend...

First year FSU COM student here. I am very excited to be here, and very glad of my choice to attend this school. Best of luck to all of you interviewing, especially to those of you interviewing here at FSU. Please ask ANY questions about FSU, its curriculum, its hospitals, its "regional campuses", or any anxieties about living in Tally (it really isn't that bad). I'll do my best to answer, in between studying for our Neuro and micro quizes (in fact, I should be studying for Doctoring right now!).

How busy are you as a first year student? What is unusual about FSU is that it starts during summer, which makes the year longer may be a bit more managable, does it help you or would you rather have a shorter year like other schools. If you were doing it all over again would you still go there, if you had a choice between FSU and UF or USF? How does not having a major Hospital like Shands or Jackson effect you?

Any interviewees from seasons past or early this year have experience staying in the Days Inn by the Expressway off of 14th at Miami Miller SOM at Miami? They offer a good rate ($62 for two double beds) and are located ridiculously close to the interview site. Is it worth the potential noise of sirens and road noise? I requested a room on the side away from the interstate as Miami SOM recommended.

First year summer is manageable if you keep on top of anatomy lecture, anatomy lab, and doctoring. In retrospect, I am very grateful that we had anatomy over the summer. I can't imagine juggling that with even more classes this semester.

First year fall semester is still manageable, of course, if you study every day!! We take Microanatomy, Doctoring II, and Neuroanatomy. Each class has smaller labs and/or small group.

Im not sure yet how not having a main hospital will affect my education. As of now, we still see Standardized Patients (pt actors with symptoms so that we can practice our physical exam). We begin our preceptorships in January.

If I had to do it again, I would certainly give FSU much consideration. The curriculum is great, the matches have been good, the teachers are great - they really do care and want you to learn. If research is a big thing for you, you may want to try one of the other schools. Nevertheless, research is rising here at the school. You have to be somewhere where you are happy for 4 years...the non-competitive nature of this school really does make you happy (I have heard UF's students are somewhat cut throat, but this is only what I hear).

I applied early and have only just applied to all medical schools in Florida, so has a friend on mine. While I have either been interviewed or have been invited to interview from all schools except University of Miami, my friend has so far just got invitation from both Miami campuses. Although it is too early to speculate, I am wondering if UM is looking for some qualities in applicants that are different from others?

I was wondering the same thing about Miami. It seems that a lot of the first interviews reported here were for the FAU campus. I don't know if that it is a coincidence. But I am also waiting on Miami and hoping to get some love from them. But like the others mentioned, it is fairly early in the season. I was just hoping to hear before the August MCAT scores came out and opened up the applicant pool. Oh well!

I am super happy for the interview that I do have and consider it pretty early in the cycle. But it is strange that each school seems to look for different things. I can see from some people MDapplicant profile that people with higher MCAT scores got an interview invite later than me at USF. So who knows, but it is clear that no schools goes straight by MCAT/GPA.

Has anyone checked the Miami status track page?

http://www.mededu.miami.edu/Admissions/statustrack/

Does it tell you whether you are on the ranked list or under review? I am just wondering because it doesn't recognize my AMCAS number?

I believe they tell you whether you are ranked or under review but not your exact position on the rankings. That's what a friend told me.

I am amazed at University of Miami lack of interest in applicants like me, who have higher MCAT as well as GPA than the average they generally end up getting. I have now starting to think if it is safe just to apply in Florida Schools or I should include some out of state schools as well. It may be too late. Anybody have an opinion about some decent out of state schools that can act as safety schools.

This is exactly why I am now stressing out. Good stats, yes, but med school admissions is rough. I recently added UM because I was getting :scared:

Dude let me just say that if you get in no where else, and I mean no where else you'll at least most likely get into USF.

Rel Larkin and the rest of the USF staff are a pretty straight forward staff and probably as real as it gets as far as talking with adcom people go. If they have given you and interview and say you have a great chance you'll get in. So even if none of your other interviews work out I wouldn't stress. Plus our school loves their own students. That's more then then I can say for some other states like Pennsylvania.

If you don't really like Miami I wouldn't apply there. However, it is a good school to consider and has many strong points to so I wouldn't completely discount it either. If you don't like downtown Miami I'd try the FAU campus.

But don't stress out cuz I do believe you'll get into USF based on your application profile, the fact that I know you in person, and then some.

What kind of ECs do yo have??? Do you have a strong clinical background??? It depends on a lot of factors not just stats. Besides all the interviews offered haven't gone out yet considering August testers haven't even begun to enter the cycle in full gear so maybe they are waiting to see some other later applicants or perhaps they haven't decided yet what they want to do with your profile. its only now almost October the beginning of the cycle.

Ok but I'm gonna go now. Take care

I tried that status link for Miami and mine isn't recognized either. I know I'm complete over there because I got an email about it a while back. I wonder what happened...

Hey bilal congrats on FSU and USF!!! 👍 👍

Have any of you guys heard from Miami (at Miami and not FAU) yet?

I find it strange that people are saying such great things about FSU med. That place took forever to get accredited and has yet to improve much at all. I've talked with a couple florida docs and an adcom member at UF and the consensus is that FSU is complete trash. Can't do rotations in Tally because their hospitals suck, barely accredited because their sciences suck. What is the draw?

The fact remains that their students got into great residency programs and most of them got into speciality of their choice, so I would not discount them based solely on perseption of few UF faculty which could be biased.

I think FSU is a wonderful school. I have an interview there on October 2nd. Its definitly my first choice. I like FSU because I can relate to their mission statement. I want to be a primary care doctor (a pediatrician) in an underserved area. Unlike many other medical schools, you can go to their regional campuses for your rotations. They even have a Rural Track, so you can go to rural underserved places in the panhandle and actually help those communities out while doing your rotations. They are also building a regional campus in the Daytona Beach area near Halifax. How many other school's have regional campuses like that? None that I know of in Florida.
.
To understand why people like FSU, you have to be able to relate to their mission statement. Their mission is to produce compassionate primary care doctors that are willing to spend their life serving Florida's underserved.

If you look into their website, you can see that the students there are proud and happy to be at FSU. FSU devotes a lot of its website to just the students and their mission statement, showing that they really care about their students and really follow their mission statement. The students and their mission statement is the center of their website, not their buildings or professors or hospitals. The students seem sincerely happy (and why wouldn't they, with all the care and attention FSU is giving them?) and they seem devoted to their goal: to serve Florida's underserved. I think they are doing a great job fulfilling their worthwhile mission and I really want embody that mission with in myself.

FSU medical school also has this program called FSUCares mission trips where they provide health care to migrant workers in different areas such as the Panama and the Texas- Mexico border. You can do that while you are medical school student. I think this all by itself is worth going to FSU for.

On my AMCAS I wrote a lot of stuff, with my theme being I want to help people that need to be helped and make a difference in this world. You can tell, just by going to their site , that FSU is trying to help the world be a better place by providing health care to those in the underserved areas.

You can only see FSU's beauty if you are sincere about your goal of serving the underserved and when you can relate to their mission statement, not when its just a back up for you.[/QUOTE]

I have fairly good but not steller EC. Both my parents are doctors and I have worked at their clinic during summers. I have MCAT 33 and 3.7 GPA, I am going to one of the highly rated private school, but I do not think that matters much. Gugudoc since you know so much about USF, what percent of students interviewed at USF actually get in. The process is so wierd, I wish it was similar to the residency program match so you were not put on hold by any program.

Around 50%, but there are some high ranked cadidates interviewing there.

As far as hearing from UM goes, I've heard from FAU (already interviewed there) but not Coral Gables yet, its kinda weird, half of the interviewees at my FAU interview group were interviewing at Coral Gables the next day, I kinda felt left out, hehe
