Sure, I'll grab an extra one for you. But, chances are I'll eat it before I get a chance to give it to you. So, yeah, I'll definitely be grabbing an extra one for you (a.ka. 2 for me).

REL, are you reading this???? Please make sure floridakppr gives the extra candy bar to me!!! 😡

All this candy bar talk is getting me even more excited for my USF interview. Oct 9 is a ways away, though. Lets hope you are right about showing USF undergrads some attention!

Q, from what I can tell, I had better give her three to get you one!!

Nah she'll eat the third one before she gets a chance to mail it out.

😀 😛 😉 🙂 :meanie:

received the EDP acceptance call this morning: game over for me, guys. USF here i come. wish you all the same luck

OMG Congrats Rajad!!!!!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

Okay what's all this talk about candy bars...I definately want one!!! lol...Man, it better not be too hot and melt all over my pretty outfit...lol!!!

Congrats to everyone hearing about interviews, maybe I'll see some of you guys at USF in two weeks!!!

I applied early and have only just applied to all medical schools in Florida, so has a friend on mine. While I have either been interviewed or have been invited to interview from all schools except University of Miami, my friend has so far just got invitation from both Miami campuses. Although it is too early to speculate, I am wondering if UM is looking for some qualities in applicants that are different from others?

Congrats on all the invites. I've applied to all the fl school and only heard from USF so far. I think its all a waiting game. Sooner or later we all should hear from the Fl schools. As for Miami, I've heard so many diferent things about how they figure out interviews but I suspect that most of it is just rumors.

I am in the opposite situation. I have only heard from Miami. My interview will be in October. I am not sure what they are looking for specifically. I am an older, non-traditional student. I have been in the profession for a few years. I have so so stats. I am sure you will get an invite eventually.
Good luck

Thanks americanangel, I am just surprised about how they figure out who to call for interview so differently from others. My friend is somewhat nervous and is wondering if he should apply to some safety schools outside florida.

You should definitely apply to more than 4 schools, I felt comfortable applying to 15, just in case. I have the stats to get into a Florida school but you can never be too sure, this whole process is a crapshoot.
Miami gives interviews based on a ranked list. They give you points on each section of your application depending on what you have. Above average GPA, mcat, excellent letters etc. will get you more points and a faster interview invite. Also it depends a lot if the people that review your application, some may love your application other may think your like everyone else. Too many factors play into the admissions process. Numbers only will not get you an acceptance or even an interview at some places.

Dude, you are overdoing it! You have outstanding stats and I am willing to bet you a dollar (or more, if you can part with your fortune) that you will be accepted right here in Florida by more than one instution. I agree that there is a degree of uncertainity in med school admission process, but you not getting in Florida will be defying all odds and you know it.

USF has a great interview day. You'll have a good time. 🙂

That's the key phrase. You need to wait another six months before you start wringing your hands over getting an invite from UM. I'm sure that my advice will fall on deaf ears. Telling a nervous pre-med to be patient usually isn't taken very well. But in your case, you've already gotten three interview invites. Three! At this point many students still have zero. Focus on your upcoming interviews for right now. You'll have plenty of time to worry about UM later.

A few out of states wouldn't hurt, possibly missing a year wouldn't compensate it for me in the event that I wouldn't get in, however unlikely it may seem to be. I'll be happy in any school in Florida, but its also cool to go out and see other school and options; just a thought.🙂

I have had the same experiences with UM in the past. My brother was an OOS resident, with a 4.0 from Vanderbilt, 38MCAT, research, no volunteer work, but was on multiple sports teams at Vandy and did some work in another country (so even though he didn't have many clinical ECs...he was definitely not a book-worm)...anyways, NEVER received an invite from UMiami. I'm a FL resident that had pretty good gpa, pretty good MCAT (but not 4.0 or 38) and a lot of clinical work..and I'm at UM now...so yeah, I would definitely say that they don't go by the "standard" measures that we all have come to know and "love." We see many other schools select students that we could have predicted would have been selected, but I don't think that's the norm with UM.

Anyways, you still have PLENTY of time to get an invite from UM...I didn't get mine until October or November and MANY MANY people in my class this year didn't interview until spring. Anyways, good luck this cycle!!

Deuist, good luck on exams Monday! 😳)

jbl, floridamd,
I'd have to say, going to interviews in OOS schools was a really cool experience...we all know what the FL schools are like, so even if you end up going to a state school in FL, it's nice to see the other schools and meet other people...anyways, just my opinion.

UM has a ranking system they score by the following scoring system:

20 points direct patient contact
10 points towards adversity factor
15 points LORs
15 points other ECs
50 points = MCAT + GPA

So you see clinical is heavily weighted. If your brother had very little clinical experience it probably was what may have hurt him.

BTW where did your bro end up????

Well MCMD, UnfrozenCaveman, RunnerMD and a few others ended up at UMiami. I can't remember who all were in the gang that used to post sooooo often with their Red Tide Jokes and all. But I recall the 3 of them. MrBurns810 was going to go to UMiami and then at the last minute she got off waitlist at Duke so ended up staying there for med school.

The others I don't recall, and one of them I won't say where they are going for their privacy related reasons.

Most of the regulars went to Umiami. I recall a few getting into UF and going there and a few at USF but those people didn't post that often.
Yea, I see unfrozencaveman everyday...RunnerMD...well, she came to class the first day and hasn't come back since! haha. We email and call each other to keep in touch, otherwise I would forget that she is still in med school. 😉

Guju,
WashU...haha. Yeah, little higher ranked than UM...but still...moral of the story is you can never tell who's getting selected with UM. 🙂

I agree with UM's ranking system in heavily weighing clinical experience-it's definitely important to have exposure prior to med school to fully understand what you're getting into and how to talk/relate to patients.

True that!!!!!! Yeah I agree it is a crapshoot process. I've known people who had great stats and didn't get in anywhere or if they got in it was just barely off a waitlist. the numbers get you past screening but your whole package counts for the interview and acceptance.

I definetly agree. I know of many people with 4.0's or close to it who applied for the MSP and didnt get in. Some of these ppl I am sure had near perfect SAT's. I only had the min requirements for gpa (3.7) and ACT/SAT (30) and got in. It's much more than numbers.

Thanks gujuDoc, interesting information. Did you know your numbers add up to 110 (not 100) and an interesting thing is if this information is accurate then they have no points for interview or other personality traits. They might as well let the computer do the selection and inform us about the outcome upon receiving secondary application. That will save us a bunch of money spent on traveling to Miami from far away places.

Hello---there are many universities that recommend courses in calculus and statistics. I took Calculus for Business at the community college, as well as algebra and trigonometry before I transferred to USF. I plan to take statistics in the spring or summer...My question is if I should take Calc I or if my previous math classes are ok. Thanks! 😳

I completely agree, I've visited two OOS schools so far and it has been a great experience.

I think that is only information about who gets selected to interview. But once you interview at Miami, there's a 75% chance that you'll also be accepted (or waitlisted)-pretty good odds...they'll tell you that statistic during your interview day so that you feel less "overwhelmed." Interviews are fun days, I hope you guys have fun at your interviews...prepare for them, but also remember that YOU are interviewing them as well as them interviewing you-so keep that in mind and go in with a positive/semi-relaxed attitude! 🙂

Hey Raja,

I think one of my fellow desi friends got into USF EDP as well. I'm actually going to PM you something.

No No No. I think you misunderstood me. That doesn't determine whether you get in or not, it just determines whether or not you get an interview.

Remember when you apply there is a status page that says you are on a ranked list or not. I think they put everyone on the rank list, and that's how they rank them.

This information came directly out of Dean Hinkley's mouth at 2 different premed forums I went to. One was at UF and the other was at USF.

Yes the numbers are supposed to add to 110 and not 100. In other words, all the other stuff counts 10 points more then numbers game of MCAT and GPA.

As MCMD pointed out once you get to the interview, you have an almost 3 out of 4 chance of getting accepted or at the least waitlisted.

Interviews factor in later the ranking is just an initial scoring for the purposes of determining who to interview. They interview based where you stand on their ranked lists.

I'd contact REL and see what he says about this but generally they want regular calculus I, but there are 2 substitutes that may be used....Calculus for Biology majors or engineering calculus.

ha!...I LIVED by the premed forums in undergrad!! haha. I went to UF's every year even though I had heard the same information most every year! I went to FSU's as well, but it was always ONLY instate schools and no OOS visitors.

Do any of you chronic attendees of forums know what are the odds of people interviewed getting in? You said it is 75% for UM, could it be 60-65% for UF?

This is information easily obtained by pulling out an MSAR. Look it up. they give number interviewed vs. accepted and number matriculated in the MSAR for each school

UF, however, in my opinion is the hardest to get into. I have known people to get in much higher ranked schools to get put on hold at UF but get into the other Florida schools plus high ranked schools.

it seems like unless you have STELLAR scores, UF will put you on the eternal wait list....

Well, if you leave the interview in a cold sweat at UF, your chances of getting accepted are 10-12%, if you leave the interview feeling like you nailed it-your chances are 20-30%. If you are asked by your interviewer if you are well-read on Alfred E. Neuman's research/work and you answer yes-your chances are 0%. (this was an actual question at UF-and someone DID in fact answer "yes')

P.S. Alfred E. Neuman is the MAD magaizine caricature.

Those are pretty grim stats! To start with they are pretty selective in who they interview.

According to the interview day I had today nearly 70% of those attending a UF interview are offered a seat. (This is not the matriculating class, this is the seat offerings). Why would you say between 10-30%, its simply not true.

got the call from mr. larkin today!!! hes so nice and im so excited and happy,10/16 here i come!

Gujudoc: Thank you for answering my question. I appreciate it!

Ha. Sent you a PM. I wasn't trying to offend you or jump your case, I guess its hard to accurately convey mood via online text. Sorry if I did either.

That's ok. No hard feelings! Glad to hear your interview went well today-good luck to you in the app cycle!
