why do MD's look Down on DO's?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Ignorance.

I grew up in the suburbs of Washington DC. When I started the whole applying to Med School process as an undergrad I had never heard of DOs or Osteopathic medicine. I went to a medical school fair and saw some osteopathic schools and I looked down on them. I didn't think they were real medical schools or that only dumb people went there. But after I did my research and actually learned about Osteopathic medicine and DO schools I laugh at how stupid I was back then.

I will be attending an osteopathic school in the fall and not ashamed of that fact at all. Areas of the country with out a strong DO presence certainly have that bias. The closest DO schools to where I grew up were a state away and at least 2+ hours. If you've never heard of them it's natural to look down on them. But once you know what they are there's no reason to whatsoever.

That was a good laugh haha

But reverend, what if I had a 3.5 cGPA undergrad, 3.9 cGPA SMP, and 32Q MCAT...and still chose to go the osteopathic way...have I still sinned?...

The desire of Osteopathic ways is not sinning, its when you act upon those desires that it becomes sin.

OncoMd is not, though. Hence the fancy foot.😛

Haha ah I thought he was talking about me. Truuue, unless OncoMD just has a foot fetish. In any case, let's all just leave this thread back in 2002 where it belongs, how bout it?

Osteopaths were an ancient race of warrior monks who healed through the use of the Force (applying low aptitude, high velocity) thrusts, or OMM. Now the OMM is what gives and osteopath it's power. Its an energy thrust that surrounds us, penetrates ups, binds the tissues together.

It's not DO's and MD's. It's medicine in general. General Surgeons look down at primary care docs because they open up people and save their lives. Neurosurgeons look down on general surgeons because they do more than just lap choles. Hospital administrators look down on us all because we are too stupid to bond together and get things done. We prefer to fight about silly little things like this.

lol, you must repent and come back into the fold.

Solid post. I've heard things like this from a bunch of attendings

This. So much this. Medicine as a whole is an arrogant field - people want to feel superior to some other group for some stupid reason, usually because their petty people. I have a friend who wanted to go into family medicine, when she told a (General) surgery attending this he said this and I quote "Do you know the difference between a surgeon and a PCP? A Surgeon is a PCP who finished his training." He was completely stone faced and serious.

As for MD vs DO, it's simply people wanting to make another group into an "other" so they can feel superior. Why can't we MDs and DOs band together and fight the true evil - Caribbean MDs!?*

*It's a joke...

holy ****, this thread was over when most of your nuts hadn't dropped yet.

Totally agree. I can't wait for the day those darn DOs stop rubbing in the fact that they are basically MD+ with the extra training they receive. I mean it is true, but in the end it just makes those DOs look insecure. :naughty:

This seriously can't be true. If a Surgeon told me this, I couldn't keep quiet. I would legit say "I don't see how that's possible, since PCP and Surgery go through two different residencies, but of course, you're entitled to your own opinion." Give a smirk and walk away.

Pretentious attendings are going to love me 😍

Kenobi, I'm surprised you have no Star Wars reference on this topic.

I sooo thought this thread would have died by now.

This thread should be retitled:

"Why pre-meds applying only MD look down on pre-meds applying DO/MD?"

... and then closed.

Because when you're a middle-aged, attending physician worried about sick patients and raising a family, I don't think you'll mind when a well qualified physician is there to help you out with different letters after their name.

This.

I think it's because pre-meds going MD only feel hurt that the guy next to them in chemistry partied the weekend before the final, got a C, retook it 3 years later, got a B+ is STILL going to be a doctor just like him and that pre-med probably thinks it unfair for what he had to sacrifice.

so true lol

friend of mine spent his entire undergrad in his dorm studying, was so mad when he found out this party girl is going to be a doctor just like him

This, This, a thousand times this.

My Uncle, who is an MD, HATES this, and I love how upset it makes him lol.

However, I hope the same thing doesnt happen with Nurse Practitioners in the near future :scared:

i know multiple people who "partied" just as much as myself that will be attending an MD school next year. your statements are incredibly ignorant.

congratz

I wasn't directing my comment at anyone, it was just funny how true Anicetus's comment was in my friend's situation

not sure how that came off as ignorant

I bet on AVERAGE the DO's partied/F***ed around more in undergrad. Not saying that's all they did. DO/MD still gotta get their stuff done and get decent to good grades out of it.

Just to not start a war, there are exceptions to this. For instance if someone with a 3.9 GPA got a 14/5/14 on his MCAT would only probably do DO's due to that screen process in MDs.

Just the other day, I had an MD look down at me.

You know what he said?

"OK, can you hand me the paint brush"

I knew immediately I had to run to SDN and post this experience, and wonder whether this is a common experience between MDs and DOs. Maybe I should have insisted on being the one on the ladder doing the job, instead of holding the ladder, this I would be the one looking down on the MD - but that's another philosophical question, similar to janitor versus custodian.

The butthurt is strong in this one

Yup. I partied a bit too hard when I first started college and it did major damage to my gpa 🙁

MD's and DO's should be teaming up against the real enemy..... Chiropractors

I'm gonna bet that some day we're going to dig up an MD vs DO thread older than Osteopathic Medicine itself.

I'm in the South, so DOs are a little less prevalent, but the majority of non-physicians I've asked don't know what the difference is -- which is more telling than asking MDs, I would say. Whether people favor an MD or DO seems to be a matter of their impression of the individual, not their training.

One nurse from New Jersey said the ones she'd worked with are a little more conservative with prescriptions, but other than that, not much difference, and what difference there is, is subtle.

Since I have been out on rotations, I haven't encountered any of this. I often don't even know who is an MD or DO. In fact, most people assume I'm an MD student and when they find out I'm a DO ,they tell me where their neck is hurting and can I "fix" it.
As far as residency, I took the STEP 1, so I wasn't screened out of any programs based on boards.

I think by now, everyone understands the points of this argument..which are sort of a waste of time.
Time to :lock:

2 pages??

how did anyone even respond to an original post that wasn't even in english????
