Why do people assume?

I wish we did what Australia and Japan and most everywhere else does and just start combined sciences/dental education right after high school in a 5 or 6 year program at a university.

This 4+4 stuff is quite unnecessarily redundant. I don't even care if I have to pay the current 8-year tuition rates for the 5 years, I'd just like to keep the number of times I'm lectured on DNA replication below triple-digits by the time I'm through.

Har! I just mentioned this exact same example to my friend the other day! *shakes a fist at DNA replication!*

Working in healthcare already, generally with MDs and RNs, I don't see too much ignorance related to dentistry, though jokes about the suicide thing have come up. I also get the whole "ahh, dentists, or "insert dental specialty" get paid well" and they give this suggestive look like that's the only reason to go to dental school. And of course, there's always quite a few who go, "Why not just got to medical school?", but clearly there's no need to go into -that- here.

No... you would be really surprised!!! I get it EVERY TIME I tell someone that I am going to dental school. It used to annoy me but now it has become kinda funny since I already got in. Whenever people respond by saying, "oh denal hygeine is a great profession!" I just nod my head agreeingly and let them think what they must. They will realize what is really up in four years when they are callling me Doctor! ha ha

YES. it happens all the time. THAT IS WHY its up to us pre-dent and dental girls to break stupid preconceived notions and show the world that you can be smart, beautiful, cute, rich, and successful ALL at the same time!

Touche'

I heard that some doctors would want to be dentists, BUT not vice versa.
Just gossip 🙂

Just let them believe what they want. Because if they know you're going to to be a Dentist, they'll probably beg you for free services.

Hey, here is a really interesting article I found from 2006 on this topic: http://www.jdentaled.org/cgi/content/full/70/11_suppl/38

“In the 1970s, women entering dental school made up approximately 2 percent of all students. But the climate began to change, and by the mid-1980s, 19.8 percent of entering dental students were women. Women entrants made up 38 percent of all students by 1990, and today essentially half of entering dental students are women. The dean at Baylor College of Dentistry recently reported that this year’s incoming class will have more women than men.”

This article goes on to argue that although women are now well represented in the academic dental field, they are still largely unrepresented with regard to leadership positions. I think this is main reason why the old stereotype “a woman who goes into the field is probably going into hygiene” hasn’t changed over the last few decades. Each year more and more female dentists graduate, but at the top, the profession is still largely dominated by men. I don’t think this problem is exclusive to dentistry either, but to all fields that have traditionally been male dominated. I wonder how many pre-med women get asked when they’ll be starting nursing school. Probably quite a few.

I believe that until the ratio of men to women is equal in all aspects of the dental field, this stereotype will continue to exist. I still think we’ve got a long way to go, but I’m optimistic that the profession will change over the next few decades as women from our generation become established in their careers and have the opportunity to become leaders in the field. With a 50/50 male to female dental student ratio, there will probably be a lot more female leaders down the road.

As a woman, I’ve run into this stereotype quite a few times. I don’t think people are necessarily being sexist or rude when they say it, I think they just don’t understand because many people still perceive dentistry to be a “masculine” profession. The best thing you can do when it happens is just to smile and explain to the person that women do, in fact, become dentists these days. 🙂

either people are sexist or they think you are not smart to become a doctor.

I'm a non-traditional female pre-dental student - going to go to USC, and I get that all the time too. Usually they say "why don't you just MARRY a dentist!" or "Isn't that going to take a long time - aren't you going to be too old to be a dentist? Just go into hygiene." - like I was even asking their opinion. The thing is, I know plenty of dentists that still practice into their 70's and I also know plenty that retire after 20 years anyways, including my dad - (it is hard on the body after a while...) I figure I got a good 20+ years in me... (I'm going to be 43)

I get a lot of "oh..I thought you were smart..."

Glad to know I'm not the only one who's had this happen. I think besides being female, people might also assume because right now I'm just working at the front desk of a doctor's office. None of the people here seem to realize I'm pretty intelligent and how hard I busted my ass in undergrad.

Im glad the opening poster brought this up.. cause the exact same thing has happened to me/my parents when I mention Im going to d school... I personally think, especially with the older demographic.. that its assumed that the women become hygienists/assistants and that dentists are primarily male.. I think our generation will have a different outlook though, since so many women are going into dentistry now! It does feel good to tell ppl the difference though.. lol 🙂

LOL I get that sometimes too. I guess because I'm female and minority. I have to tell some ppl, "Nooo...I'm going to be a dentist, not an assistant/hygienist."

Always happens to me.
Last example: as I was going to the Columbia interview in NYC, this very educated lady started talking to me and was super friendly. Her level of conversation was very sophisticated>> we were talking about politics and different countries, etc. Then she asked me why I was in NYC and I told her I had an interview at a dental school. She then said "Good luck with the dental assisting program"

When I say I'm going to dental school in the fall I always get "...oh to be a hygienist?"...or.."..will you clean my teeth for free when you get done?"...I also have to clarify that it is four more years to most people and they're always astonished that dentists actually need that much education to "look at teeth all day"....irritating!

Yeah, it's funny how ignorant the general public can be. All the same, none of us should let any of this bother us. In the end, we'll all have kick-ass careers that we enjoy and be mad ballin.

After telling friends and family I got into dental school, I kept getting responses like:

-Ohh...(confused and puzzled look)
-It's a two-year program right?
-Don't kill yourself!
-Why do you want to clean teeth all day?
-Is it because you couldn't get into medical school?
-Then there are those who incessantly bring up how lucrative this career is...(better than the above I suppose!)

True dat brethren! 🙂

Does this happen to anyone else? Whenever I tell someone I'm going to dental school in the fall they ask me "for hygeine or assisting?" NO! To be a real dentist! DDS! I'm wondering if it's because I'm female? I just don't get why people autmatically assume I must be going for hygeine or assisting.

Tell them to stop being sexist and F themselve!!

Do you honestly expect the general public to know anything about dentistry at all? Kinda egotistic, don't cha think? What if they expected us to know about the postal service exam, how long physical therapy programs last, the levels of certification of aviation, ...etc?

Nothing people say bothers me, I'm a duck, just let it roll of your back. I don't get caught up in what other people think, makes life much easier/more enjoyable

Used to get that too-
-is it for 2 or 3 years?
-will you be called Dr at then end of it?
-why do want to look at mouths all day long?
-why do you study so hard to learn how to pull out teeth?
-why d school? Coz you couldn't get into med school?

You have a point but I wouldn't go so far as to label it egotism. I'm just really surprised how misinformed some members of the general public are! I mean, where do they get some of this stuff? Regardless, it makes for some interesting conversations and a lot of laughs! 🙂

What's the difference between a sadist and a dentist?

Dentstd, funny you should bring up the postal career; Isn't it a popular belief that they also have a high rate of suicides?

I've gotten that one as well. It's like somehow you're now a failure in their eyes...lol!

But in your case, they must be forgetting...

I believe that most of us think, "well everyone knows that Medical school is 4 yrs, so they should know that about Dental school as well". IMO, this is all a part of the med vs dent stigma that has/is going around everywhere esp. SDN.
Most ppl dont think about how Med school has always been more visible and talked about just as a generality, so everyone knows about it (not to mention how comercialized it is... House, Greys Anat., ER Blah blah blah). Dental has just recently been taking on alot more hype and competition. And there are no mainstream primetime Dental Dramas.

Can you imagine a drama where a dentist says "bring me 4 pints of AB -ve blood stat! This patient is about to loose a tooth".
