why is texas special?

Seriously....there isn't anything better than a good southern girl. as much as texas can be a pain sometimes...i just look around and remember why i love it here. :)

Agreed. I love women from the Southern US. I find them to be much friendlier and more outgoing than women in Canada.

They also tend to be more family oriented and not those 'feminazis' that are much too common in Canada.

:( I want to move to Texas now

Texas probably has the least attractive women in the country. It is after all the fattest state.

In Ohio and New York state (where I've spent most of my time), being fat usually means that you're a bit overweight. In Texas, being overweight is the norm. The only skinny folks are recent immigrants from Somalia. The fat people in Texas have asses 3 feet wide, and limbs as wide as they are long. Everything is bigger in Texas because it has to be, to accomadate the immense girth of the locals.

But then again, maybe you like fat chicks. I don't pretend to understand Southern customs and fetishes.

In fact, I'd also agree with the other poster. I wouldn't mind if Texas was even more republican.
its only conservative in the rural areas. the cities are blue, like austin houston etc. i wish the cities were more conservative. i too wouldnt mind if tx were more red, get those blues outta here.

UCSBMed1, I think SitraAchra was yanking you chain. True ,folks in Texas do get a bit "passionate' when the talk turn towards football. :D

Sitra, darling, why don't you turn on some of that Texas charm and show the folks why I *heart* you so much. GRRR... :p

Masamune4567, their are feminist and liberals in Texas too. That's what make the state so great, diversity.

Yes Texas is sometime backwards, yes we obsess about HS football and Yes we certainly do have a large population of girth-challenged folks..

But TEXAS is a great state to call home.

I agree. I am a Conservative in Canada, but as you might know, Canada is very socialistic/liberal.

That's why I want to move to Texas. And I like George Bush too :)

thats very true, baylor COM is one of the cheapest allopathic schools out there... 8,000 a year i believe? someone give us the official figures please... but anyways i mean i dont think texas is necessarily suckier than other states....they just have the most whackiest process for freaking medical school, wonder if we can lobby for change

Can you give me some information on how Texas is different than AMCAS?

I'm a Canadian who wants to go to medical school in Texas.

For all those saying that Texas does not have hot women how do you justify both UT Austin and Texas Tech consistently ranking in the top 10 colleges for good-looking girls according to Playboy? http://www.playboy.com/on-campus/features/topten/

I do agree that Texas does have some fatties and I think that it is going to be a huge health problem especially with diabetes in the Mexican population (notice how I made my post medically relevant).

Oh and to all the Texas women haters...when I say we have hot ladieezzzzz , I'm not talking about the overweight ones. I have a fetish alright, and it's for the southern hawties that I'm neck deep in. Plus our athletics are grand. Being from UT I can't help but be spoiled about our program.

They are all ugly with horrible personalities, or so I tell my wife. Absolutely nothing, in Texas, like cruising Guadalupe St. (Austin) or University (Lubbock) in the spring.

Medical relevance: Increased occurrence of skin cancer due to long term exposure to UV rays. Please be careful! Apply SPF 30 or greater sunblock or that coconut spray stuff that glistens.

Austin sucks, or at least Congress, from the Hickory Street Cafe to 4th street. As a country boy who moved there to work downtown, I was shocked when Leslie got pissy with me for looking at him/her. I had to make a break for the good ol conservative haven of Amarillo. I tend to agree with Moosepilot, although I do run into a liberal or two every now and then. I think they get blown off of I-40 by accident, so I don't blame 'em. I just start walking towards then with a leather covered calculus book, which they mistake for a bible, and voila', gone never to return.

Haha. I had the honor (or horror?) to zip up Leslie's dress once. He told my friends and me that Shania Twain gave it to him. Oh 6th street memories!

But to answer the OP: TX has their own app system primarily because a significant portion of our education is subsidized by the state. We (or our parents) pay the taxes, we reap the benefits. Hence, no more than %10 out-of-staters are admitted (Baylor allows a slightly higher %). Also: I don't know how much AMCAS applications cost, but for TMDSAS I paid something like $135 to apply to SIX schools + no more than $110 in secondaries (only required for some of the schools).

As a sidenote...I just got back from Chicago and I must say, those are the damned nicest people you will find anywhere. Some people even (gasp) offered me help finding my way around without being asked. And the weather was gorgeous.

As a Texas Tech girl, I have to give you props for bringing this up. At Tech we definitely have awesome looking girls (and guys too, for that matter). I doubt there are any places where guys actually go to class just to pass the girls on campus (and pray for wind, I think is what my friends say, lol). It's a crazy place.

That said, I have lived on both coasts, all over the west and of course, in Texas. The people are insanely nice here, not that they're not in other places, but it just seems to be the norm here instead of the exception. The weather is hot (way hot) lots of the time, but that means shorts, skirts and flip-flops pretty much year round which is FINE BY ME! :)

Ya'll have a fabulous evening, and I sure would hate to see a Cali-Texas brawl on here as they are my two fave states that I've lived in so far..... ;)

ok the women in TX are not ugly. we have the sexy southern belles. and true we're the fattest state, but that doesn't mean all the girls are fat. we have quite lovely women here. the only state that has better women in my opinion is california.

also TX bleeds red. we will never be a blue state. sure the college campuses are all blue but they're just kids that are idealists and don't know the real world.

TX is a great state. i hope to go to school and practice in TX for the rest of my life. i love this great state in this great country of ours. (i'm not a nut about TX, i just have a lot of pride)

I'm suprised no one has mentioned the oil industry yet. For all of those who think that Texans are all a bunch of uneducated idiots, the modern oil industry wouldn't exist without the skills and technologies developed at the universities and companies located all around Texas. Alot of the wealth in Texas comes from oil, and even though there is no oil left in Texas, foreign oil companies still look to Houston for technical consulting when starting a drilling project. The best geophysicists in the world are located in Texas.

I know some will flick me off and putter off at 15mph in their electric car, (or go explode in your hydrogen one) but oil is and will continue to be vital for the US economy.

And of course, the women are damn gorgeous and alot nicer and hospitable than anywhere else (even to lil ol' minority me. Haven't lynched me yet). I have several friends and my sister who moved to new york and they are all just so irritable now.

I don't think this was about Cali vs. Texas, it was about Texas vs. everyone else. You'd know if I was talking about the Golden State. I have nothing wrong when someone is proud to be where they're from--but don't put down other states in the process, especially when you have a state like California lumped in that group. That is argumentative suicide, my friend.

Okay, bro. Stick to what you know: you know NOTHING about California. This state is WAY to big to have everyone go to Cal or UCLA. A state of 36 million is unable to accomodate everyone. The UC system has more schools in the Top 50 (including my alma mater) than any other state in the country. Go read up about the UC system or go study for the MCAT or something. Don't talk about s*it you know nothing about, especially coming from someone who went to the University of Houston. What, you couldn't get into UT Austin or Baylor?

UCSB - I think it's hilarious that you're projecting your home state arrogance on people like me. Does my screen name or signature have anything to do with Texas? It seems you are the one who is hell bent on letting everyone know you're a Californian.

Just reading your first two posts in this thread, you made negative comments each time. How much experience with Texas do you have to even be posting in this thread, could you tell me?

People from Texas have pride and you do need to get over that, plus this was a light hearted thread to begin with until you jackassed it all up.

I don't think anyone provoked you to post about our Dallas "Cowgirls" and how we supposedly don't have good sports teams??? ANYways, you need to post in places where your opinion matters and isn't just a bother.

p.s. can i see your fist again? or is it currently in your mouth.

Before pro football was even mentioned, someone said how the Cowboys are "America's team."

I agree that maybe calling them the 'girls (thats what we call them in NorCal) was wrong, but calling them America's team is just as wrong. When they come to the Bay Area, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to tell that America's so-called team will get their butts booed just like every other team. They are called the DALLAS Cowboys for a reason: they are for Dallas, not everywhere else.

Learn how to argue, bro...

I don't make internet threats...so by default your arguments are null. You haven't disproven anything I've said either. The Cowboys' nickname is "America's Team" or at least it was for a period of time. I don't think we're bragging, no one is saying the Cowboys are how they were back in the dynasty days...but you somehow took offense.

Anyways this conversation has clearly run its course. Good talk.

"Americas' team" is a subjective thing for football. It's just a term the sportswriters use. Shouldn't Americas' team right now be the Patriots...the new dynasty?

How are you going to go off and say I support my state above the country? Just because someone likes their state doesn't mean they don't give a damn about their country. You make nothing but baseless assertions.

Anyone that watches the NFL knows that there are 30 teams...don't act like the top superbowl winning teams don't get the title of being America's team and NFL champions.

Nah, I love SoCal. Its just a game we play; when it comes to outsiders, its California uberalis all the way (all of it).

I never said you "didn't give a damn" about my country, so don't put words in my mouth. But in my experience, and I can bet this is true for most Americans, Texans are quick to claim how great Texas is, and how much beautiful the women are there, etc. like there aren't other great places to be.

Now other Californians might do the same thing, and I disagree with that as well--don't make this a California vs. Texas thing, cause thats not what it is. I think your condescending tone is losing its charm - however clever you initially thought it was.

So why are you so upset about Texans and their pride? Praising a state does not equate to bashing the other 49, I want you to know that. Why do you get so wound up about this, it puzzles me.

I'm from Nevada, I filled out the UC common application and I got into Berkeley and UCLA. And got a Regents Scholarship from Davis. from out of state.

So I do know about California. I went to UH because they give a full ride (tuition, room, board, books) to all National Merit Scholars. Almost went to Davis, but I guarantee that Houston is a way better place to live, and also the UC Regents scholarships are really stingy, especially when factoring in the out-of-state tuition.

I suppose I don't have anything against UCSB, but I don't like you badgering everyone about how great California is. You're not entertaining, witty, or interesting, just a belligerent bore who assumes that everyone knows less than he does.

Ok, you talk to me about not knowing what I posted???!!! You obviously are not keeping up yourself, love. I graduated from high school from Rock Springs, Wyoming, and I love that state (at least in the summer time!!! ;) ) more than most any that there is. I find peace and refuge in the mountains that is hard to find anywhere else.

Don't sit here and try to feed me lines of BS about how YOU aren't trying to turn this into a cali v. texas thing, when you just keep going ON AND ON AND FREAKIN' ON!

I am also a former airman in the US Air Force that served our country during 9/11, so don't you f-in' sit there and tell me that I love my state over my country, don't you EVEN try to say that. You have WAY OVERSTEPPED your boundaries, buddy. It's time for you to reevaluate and have yourself a little sit-down. As far as "putting words in your mouth," maybe you should sit down and re-read a few of your posts and see how your words might affect others.

I don't know where in the hell you get the idea that you are the "enlightened one" - my words, not yours - and that you can tell us all that we are all about our state and not about our union! You should be ashamed - seriously. No one can say that I don't love my country, let alone some selfish little brat like you. I am willing to die for my country, my president and the things that the US and even the UN stand for. The right for ALL PEOPLE to be seen EQUAL in the eyes of the law. So you can just kiss my AMERICAN A**. I doubt very seriously that there are many in this "UNION" let alone ANY D*MN State willing to do that.

Back down, shut up and stop your nonsense about how Texans are more concerned with our state than our country. Some may, but that's not just Texas, "dear."

I was willing to just let you do your thing, but you brought this on.

I love California, I was stationed there for 3 years and loved every minute, but I will defend my state, and moreso I will defend my love of my country.

I'm done with you, UCSBMed1 and your immature, insensitive views on what Texan's think. You should know if you spent any time here that we are patriots for the most part, but every state has their segregists (aka extreme liberals). Stop trying to prove something that you can't. Stop trying to pin something on a population that is mostly patriotic to the core. You are young, inexperienced and rude. Go to hell, dear.

I am a really really nice person, and I love most everyone, and maybe if we had the opportunity to actually sit down and TALK about this, it would be worked out, but STOP, STOP, STOP on this subject. We all love parts of this country and hold homage to it in our own ways. Let's just respect that and move on. I can do that, so who is going to be the bigger person and move on with me? I hope that all you Texans can. We are good, kind people (for the most part, of course) and we can forgive ignorance - at least I hope so.

Back to the situation at hand, Texas isn't special, we just have a state government that believes that their medical students will come back and serve their own and not just go where the highest paying and most prestigious residencies are. That's why we have our own system. That's why we have much lower tuition. Our STATE BELIEVES IN US! That certainly helps us to stand up for our state, I think.

GOD BLESS AMERICA. TEXAS IS A PART OF AMERICA, SO GOD BLESS US, TOO! GOD BLESS EVERY OTHER PART OF THIS COUNTRY BECAUSE WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER! IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE IN GOD I MEAN NO OFFENSE, I DO BELEIVE, BUT I DON'T HAVE ANY BEEF WITH ANY OTHER RELIGION ON THIS PLANET, AND THAT'S THE TRUTH.

To all Texans- how diverse it texas? I've always thought virginia is not diverse enough (except northern virginia, my home). I've never been to texas btw.

Someday Texas' Application Service will get swallowed up by AMCAS. It's really stupid that you can apply to med schools in 49 other states with AMCAS, except for Texas.

If so, and you're probably right, I hope that they take a few pages from TMDSAS. Like lowering the app fees and implementing the match system that Texas uses. It keeps people from holding multiple slots at schools while letting both the applicants and the schools voice their opinions. I think it's a pretty sweet deal, and I would hope AMCAS will at least adopt that, even if Texas' system stays separate.

Houston is MUCH more diverse than northern Virginia. I haven't spent too much time in other parts of Texas so don't really know about those. Hope this helps!

I was floored with how big Chinatown is in Houston - they have Asian cops and the street signs are in Chinese too!

*amazed white boy*

sadly...nothing will make me like dim sum.

connecticut is the "richest state" per person (income).

if you claim cali is the richest state based on volume per year it is moot b/c cali is the most populated state in the US.

Eh, I doubt it. For the record, TMDSAS is part of AMCAS, but I think the application process for public med schools in TX will always be separate.
