pretty ******ed, since the initial thought might be "oh bc tx is big and heavily populated" but then you have CA which is more populated and has better schools. so yeah it seems senselessbyeh2004 said:ok call me a noob, why does texas have its own admissions stuff?
getunconcsious said:The reason is because Texas does EVERYTHING, including medical school admissions, in the most a$$-backwards way possible. Other examples include: You have to go to two separate offices to get a Texas driver's license and register your car in Texas; You can't get a real driver's license right away in Texas, you have to roll around with this stupid pink card that no one will accept as ID until they get around to sending it from Austin; You can't buy beer after 12 or liquor after 9. Texas is just weird/stupid. I'd recommend avoiding it if you can.

That is so true! People really do get stuck here in a way totally different from anywhere else. I totally thought that I would go out of state for college and I didn't. Then I thought I would go out of state for med, and now I'm practically praying to go to a TX med school. Must be something in the water...getunconcsious said:Ok, ok it has a *few* upsides, like the food is good, the shopping is pretty ok, and the weather is good (I hate to be cold). But other than that I'd avoid it cuz they don't do things normally here, and also it's kind of a vortex and you get stuck here once you move here. Like I never dreamed that I would be stuck here for undergrad AND medical school. But here I am. So unless you really WANT to be stuck here for a long time, I wouldn't come.

Before this summer, there were lots of things about Texas that I really didnt like, but now after spending TREE WEEKS in Cleveland Ohio, I really miss it. I really dislike the ultra conservative bible-beating country critters rolling around Texas, but I have to say they are much nicer than the people in Ohio. Also, the food up here SUCKS ASS!! Everyone cooks as if only 70 year old diabetes patients frequent restaurants. The women are greedy and the men all want ass; I miss my southern hospitality. And you thought the ghetto people were running rampant in TX, but Cleveland OMG!! The people we call ghetto in Houston are really just country people in disguise, I found out what really ghetto is when I got here (and its not nice). Also, Texas may do the medical school application thing differently but you must admit their system works. Since people cant hold multiple acceptances (due to the match system) more people can get in. Also Texas schools are the cheapest med schools in the nation. I would much rather practice in Texas than Ohio also because there are caps on malpractice insurance so even OB/GYNs dont have to pay out the ass to practice. Weve got better weather, food, manners, and cheaper goods than most anywhere in the US. Id take my boot-scootin-boogiein home town over Cleveland any day.

Learfan said:As an ex-New Yorker, I disagree with that statement. I moved here 18 years ago and now realize I never had it so good. No state income tax. No county income tax. No city income tax. Affordable housing. Less of the constant liberal foolishness coming out of the politicians.
Want to give up up to 11% of your income just to reside in an east coast state? Your right if you want. I will stay in low tax Texas and enjoy that sweet sweet money after med school and residency are over. I am tired of listening to the politicians on both coasts telling me they need more of my money to support the shiftless, lazy and useless among us.
getunconcsious said:I realize that Ohio sucks much worse than Texas, but I do miss my Nevada! I miss seeing transvestites roll around in broad daylight on Las Vegas boulevard. I miss seeing strippers driving to work topless. I miss the look of horror on a suburban soccer mom's face when someone tries to hand her 8-year old free porn. I miss the 2 am liquor runs to the grocery store. I miss the tax-free Indian cigarettes. I miss seeing the tourists in utter despair when they'd lost the house, the car, the savings....
You'd never see this in Texas because Texas tries to control people's lives through what they think are 'moral standards' but are really infringements upon personal liberties. In Nevada you can do whatever, whenever, with whoever and the state has nothing to say about it. Now excuse me while I go look for a hooker and a slot machine.
Brain said:True, you don't have state/county/city income taxes but I'd bet just about anything the property taxes make up for it.
Depends what part of Texas you call home.Brain said:True, you don't have state/county/city income taxes but I'd bet just about anything the property taxes make up for it.

Some places do have high property tax. Some are fairly reasonable.
