Because it chooses to?

AMCAS is a joint application system composed of schools that wanted to do a joint system. Texas does their own thing. They even have a unique match process, where you have to rank the schools you interview at and the schools let the central system know whether they want you, and you only get into the top school on your list that takes you. It's like the residency match, sort of.

pretty ******ed, since the initial thought might be "oh bc tx is big and heavily populated" but then you have CA which is more populated and has better schools. so yeah it seems senseless

although that match system, thats true. why not implement that on a national scale?

i could speculate as to why from their side, but i do know that for us it's much cheaper this way.

does it have any "goodness" to how good their medical school is... my god i need to work on my proper use of engrish

The Republic of Texas needs its own system. :)

Stay out Yankie bastaads!

To discourage out-of-staters from applying.

at all the comments especially Chaey's comments!!!!!!!

The reason is because Texas does EVERYTHING, including medical school admissions, in the most a$$-backwards way possible. Other examples include: You have to go to two separate offices to get a Texas driver's license and register your car in Texas; You can't get a real driver's license right away in Texas, you have to roll around with this stupid pink card that no one will accept as ID until they get around to sending it from Austin; You can't buy beer after 12 or liquor after 9. Texas is just weird/stupid. I'd recommend avoiding it if you can.

because texas is its own little country

Could not agree more. Avoid Texas like the plague, there are nothing but weirdos and idiot rednecks here. And we.....I mean they don't like pretentious yankees. I even heard that they crafted many of their state procedures/laws with the idea of discouraging yankee migration in mind. Bigots and toothless women are to Texas as intellectualism and culture are to all other regions of the country, except New Mexico. ;)

wow, all this criticizing of texas sure makes the rest of the country seem like a delightful place to live

Get unconscious,

You had me cracking up. But I agree, Tx is like the sister to Fl in backwardness, though I think you got it worse. Must have something to do with being runned by the Bush family. J/k.

Nah, for all its faults, I'd rather live there then some of the northwestern states. By this, I'm not referring to coastal states but some of the inland states.

Texas is one of those places that you just learn to tolerate if you've been here long enough. No one really loves living here, they just know the system and put up with it.

Ok, ok it has a *few* upsides, like the food is good, the shopping is pretty ok, and the weather is good (I hate to be cold). But other than that I'd avoid it cuz they don't do things normally here, and also it's kind of a vortex and you get stuck here once you move here. Like I never dreamed that I would be stuck here for undergrad AND medical school. But here I am. So unless you really WANT to be stuck here for a long time, I wouldn't come.

That is so true! People really do get stuck here in a way totally different from anywhere else. I totally thought that I would go out of state for college and I didn't. Then I thought I would go out of state for med, and now I'm practically praying to go to a TX med school. Must be something in the water...

i dont know about y'all but i love texas. i'm proud to call it my home. haha.

Somebody recently told me that if Texas were to break off and form its own country, it would rank pretty high up there (like 7th or 8th) in wealth world-wide. Anybody know just how true this is?

I wouldn't be suprised....but it would still be last in education.

I hope to move there. I hope it becomes a trend. People move to the states that cater to their politics and we can just learn to avoid each other.

You think you get sucked into texas, try being from massachusetts. It's cold, dark, the people are mean, until last year you couldnt buy beer on a sunday, we have ted kennedy as a senator, the worlds most confusing road system, the worst drivers on earth, a baseball team that makes you feel abused for faithfully following them, the big dig which is an 11 billion dollar giant leaky hole in the ground, tons of liberals, high taxes and gay marriage.

Honestly I LOVE my state, and probably will always have a red sox liscence plate. :D

Simmer down there my belligerent friend. Before this summer, there were lots of things about Texas that I really didn’t like, but now after spending TREE WEEKS in Cleveland Ohio, I really miss it. I really dislike the ultra conservative bible-beating country critters rolling around Texas, but I have to say they are much nicer than the people in Ohio. Also, the food up here SUCKS ASS!! Everyone cooks as if only 70 year old diabetes patients frequent restaurants. The women are greedy and the men all want ass; I miss my southern hospitality. And you thought the ghetto people were running rampant in TX, but Cleveland OMG!! The people we call ghetto in Houston are really just country people in disguise, I found out what really ghetto is when I got here (and it’s not nice). Also, Texas may do the medical school application thing differently but you must admit their system works. Since people can’t hold multiple acceptances (due to the match system) more people can get in. Also Texas schools are the cheapest med schools in the nation. I would much rather practice in Texas than Ohio also because there are caps on malpractice insurance so even OB/GYNs don’t have to pay out the ass to practice. We’ve got better weather, food, manners, and cheaper goods than most anywhere in the US. I’d take my boot-scootin-boogiein’ home town over Cleveland any day.

I was going to say that Florida was worse off then Louisiana cuz it used to be ranked 47 in the nation for education. But that was until I found this link:

http://www.morganquitno.com/edrank.htm

However, I'll say that we are still worse off then Tx in terms of Education. Plus, who can beat a state with a top 20 med school there??? lol

But in all seriousness, Tx aint the worst wranked state for education. It is 33 according to those rankings. You could be worse off......

I'd take Tx to some of the northern inland states any day.

As an ex-New Yorker, I disagree with that statement. I moved here 18 years ago and now realize I never had it so good. No state income tax. No county income tax. No city income tax. Affordable housing. Less of the constant liberal foolishness coming out of the politicians.

Want to give up up to 11% of your income just to reside in an east coast state? Your right if you want. I will stay in low tax Texas and enjoy that sweet sweet money after med school and residency are over. I am tired of listening to the politicians on both coasts telling me they need more of my money to support the shiftless, lazy and useless among us.

I've lived lots of places, on both US Coasts and overseas. Believe me, Texas is one of the best places to live in the world. Now, if we just had some world class beaches it'd be perfect. Still, all and all:

i thought i really liked texas growing up as a kid...and then i moved to california for undergrad

now that i'm back in texas, i feel like i'm living in the stoneage at times.

but i agree, this place does grow on you...(food is good...and the girls are hot  )

Yes, but you guys have AHNOLD as guvhah!

You recalled one idiot and voted in another.

In Texas we knew GWB was a dude so we got rid of him by sending him to DC!
:D

people haven't been mentioning the ladieeezzzz enough. They are HOT in Texas and NOT HOT in the North East.

Seriously....there isn't anything better than a good southern girl. as much as texas can be a pain sometimes...i just look around and remember why i love it here. :)

I am so getting slammed for this, but it's all in good fun.

It is definitely the people who live in Texas that make it "special."

I realize that Ohio sucks much worse than Texas, but I do miss my Nevada! I miss seeing transvestites roll around in broad daylight on Las Vegas boulevard. I miss seeing strippers driving to work topless. I miss the look of horror on a suburban soccer mom's face when someone tries to hand her 8-year old free porn. I miss the 2 am liquor runs to the grocery store. I miss the tax-free Indian cigarettes. I miss seeing the tourists in utter despair when they'd lost the house, the car, the savings....

You'd never see this in Texas because Texas tries to control people's lives through what they think are 'moral standards' but are really infringements upon personal liberties. In Nevada you can do whatever, whenever, with whoever and the state has nothing to say about it. Now excuse me while I go look for a hooker and a slot machine.

Hate to burst your bubble, but the title of cheapest belongs to EASTERN CAROLINA UNIVERSITY! (I don't go there, but I live in NC).

I would agree that Texas has a tendency to control a lot of things. The legislature is such a joke. All the important things that need to be done (I.E. education, teacher pay, tax reform, etc. etc.) are never dealt with, while all the stupid legislation is either done first or called upon to be finished during a special session.

I dont know, texas is "special"....and yes in that way.

True, you don't have state/county/city income taxes but I'd bet just about anything the property taxes make up for it.

I  Nevada. I wish UNSOM weren't so stingy with their out of state acceptances or I'd have totally applied there. Too bad they don't have much in the way of residency programs.

You have to love the people who hand out porn on the strip. They even try to hand me adverisements for female strippers even when I'm walking around with my boyfriend.

You be the judge. According to the bank, my house could be sold for $130K and the annual taxes are about $2200. Not too bad.

Depends what part of Texas you call home.

Some places do have high property tax. Some are fairly reasonable.

True. They're pretty high here in Sugar Land though.

Yeah but Texas schools give you more bang for your buck. Baylor (#12 or 13) cost 6,550 and UTSW (#18) cost 7,550 per year. Name other top 20s that cost this little to attend. Texas schools rock!
