Why the sudden increase in pre-dents????

I do not know if it is just me, but recently everyone that I meet in my school is a pre-dent, and this forum is always crowded 24/7. Pre-meds downgrading and pharmacists upgrading maybe? Has it always been this way guys, or is it just school decision making time and people are interested?

So much more competition, and everyone seems to have a 4.0 and 30AA....

It seems like I meet a ton of people that are pre-dents as well. However, most of the people that I know that have tried to get into dental school have applied several years in a row and then just given up. That has happened to 4 of my friends.

this is the first generation where a lot of the children of physicians have been encouraged by their MD parents NOT to go to med-school and instead go to d-school. so you have a lot of those ppl along with the dental legacies, along with the overall awareness of the lifestyle and income---couldn't have hit it at a worse time 😀

average work week: 36 hrs.
average income: 180K (keep in mind that takes into account all the part time dentists as well)
these stats are according to one d-school where i interviewed

there has definitely been an increase in applicants over the years. who cares. let's talk about your car!! not a fan of domestics except for the z06, but your car is insane. what did you do to it? i'm guessing around 700 hp at the crank? what's your quarter mile? i love cars. 😍

I wouldn't be suprised - they may try to increase the number of doctors, lawyers, and dentists to bring down the cost of healthcare. During the 70's, dental schools had to increase their enrollment a certain percentage each year or lose goverment benefits. They were doing everything they could to fill these spots. When my dentist went to dental school, they actually had empty spots in his class the first year.

Me too. I've got a 300whp (400hp at the flywheel) WRX that I love! Of course my 12.8 quarter mile is nothing to your........11.5 mabe? That's assuming you stick your launch, lol. With that much rear wheel power, you probably burn out in reverse

As for the thread topic; there will always be an increase in pre-dent numbers. The profession is too appealing to pass up. You'll always have trolls who switch from med to dent, and you'll have med parents telling their kids to stay away from medicine, and you'll have dental parents reitterating the benefits of dentistry. It's just something we all have to get through.

I talked to an admissions officer who said it is largely due to an increase of schools with pre-dental clubs. 8 years ago there was only one at UNC and now almost every school in NC has one, so UNC has seen a 2 fold increase in applicants as a result.

I dunno... the ADA kicks ass compared to the AMA. In metaphoric speak, the gov't is like a prowler, the ama is like a Chihuahua, and the ada is a pack of Rottweilers. The ADA will fight hard to prevent government regulation/meddling.

I also think that if you took the current population of med/dental applicants and time warped them back to the 1970's, a lot of the current dental applicants would be applying to med schools instead. I mean, lets be honest here... dentistry is like the perfect healthcare profession. Its conducive to family life, pays well, and doesn't require 2 a.m. trips to the hospital every night. Furthermore, dentists don't have medicare/HMO executives/legislative bodies (grrr I hate you kaiser) dictating EVERY breath they take. I think that inteligent people recognize this and say to themselves: yep, dentistry is the place to be.

so kaiser's "error" (note lack of capitalization) saved them $30,000,000 in transplant costs.... hmmm, lets see... if we let all these people die, we'll get fined about $2,000,000. But if we try to help them, we'll lose $30,000,000... hmmm.... i really do need that diamond studded toilet I saw in the Tiffany's catalogue... yeah, lets let them die and save $28,000,000 so i can get a bonus and buy a diamond encrusted toilet....

So yeah... I think that a lot of pre health people have been turned off by all the trouble in medicine and have thus been redirected to other fields.

However, you have to consider that there has been a ridiculous increase in med school applications as well (according to my premed friends) so maybe there is some other force at work... i mean, the population did just hit three hundred million...

For the best careers with tremendous prospect, healthcare is the way to go. All health-related fields are experiencing a boon in applications. Even pre-pharmacy applicants are saying that a 3.0 is no longer good enough for pharm schools.

I have spent a lot of money on the car that i wish i could get back.....

Upgraded fuel, pulley on the KB, exhaust and timing a little bit. Traction sucks, especially on a rainy day. On 105 octane it put out 648whp but i can not get anything better than a 11.3 on track. Can not keep it straight first or second, so i have to let off.

Back to the subject, i thought i was the only one to see the increase in pre-dents. Maybe now they can build some more schools!
Democrats will win, but i think they will have their hands full fixing the mess left behind.

No crazy insurance to pay for, perfect working schedule, great income, why would pre-meds or anyone pass it up.

Pre-reqs are changing too b/c of the increase in comp... Michigan has changed it's pre-reqs for next year...it's going to be crazy for the next applicant cycle...

That seems backwards but I could be wrong. It seems more likely that the increase in applicants has led to the increase in clubs.

I personally think it is all of the publicity that dentistry has received as a "lifestyle/good salary-profession". I think it was the New York Times that ran the cover story comparing a dentist and a doctor's lifestyles about 15 years into their respective careers. It was a totally subjective example but the doctor was miserable and the dentist was siphoning off the cream of life. Dentistry is a fad career like tech jobs were in the early 90's. This is a competitive cycle but I still think it could get a lot worse in the next few years.

This whole thing actually really pisses me off. I know a few kids that got into dental school their first year that were originally pre med, got stellar grades because they were basically forced too, then decided to go into dental. I heard that one guy actually didn't even think he wanted to be a dentist when he entered school. I'm so glad that students with amazing grades, yet no passion get in. My grades are decent, but not that great compared to some of the kids switching over.

Another thing is that I've worked for my uncle as a dental assistant for years, and my dad is a dental lab tech. I really know and love dentistry, but I feel the schools only pay attention to scores because they HAVE to now. They get so many applications I don't blame them for being selective for some of the wrong reasons (or wrong in my eyes). I know that a lot of you pre dents out there are probably fantastic students, but some of the other awesome students are just going into dentistry for the perks, not even understanding what the profession really is.

first off, with results of a congress turnover, the first concern on anyone's mind is how much less they'll be making with democrats in control or how they will be forced to work for 36+ hours.
i hope this is what you had listed for your ambitions in your personal statements. make sure you emphasize it once more when interviewing.

i for one know that i am not entering the dental field for a 4-day work week or a lucrative income, but rather the chance to contribute to society. along with that, i'm happy to have a party back in power that doesn't strive off of hypocrisy, murder, disillusions, and avarice at its most disgusting.

lastly, i will tell you not to worry, because even in the world's poorest countries, dentists are still the richest and least occupied medical professionals.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. I'm a GP dentist. I see colleagues who are extremely bright, but lack people skills or have shoddy artistic ability, or just don't have the patience to pay attention to the small minute details that make dentistry what it is.

Good dentistry sometimes is about sweating the small stuff. If that isn't what applicants are about, the profession would be better off with those people not applying.
