Thanks for the input. I notice also that you were complete at most places about mid-late september. That's the case with me too! Are you nervous about being a little late? Being on SDN had totally freaked me out. I swear this place is crazy.
lol sorry to barge in on your convo, but I know how you feel about the SDN-mania...I'm a fellow Sept. completer too😉

How's it going for you so far? Been to any interviews/ had invites yet? Finally someone I can relate to!

Regardless, I get to engage in "guilt free shopping" this holiday weekend. Just received a JCP coupon email. Perhaps, I will find something completely different, I still have a couple of weeks to go!

I have my first interview this tuesday, I have such a crazy schedule I couldn't shop until this weekend. In the interest of cost I went to JCP and found a full pant(legs waaayyy too long for a skirt) business suit that actually fits well(which is surprising because I'm a skinny thing) on sale and came out to $75.00, got a button up shirt on sale for $17.99. I totally think I made out like a bandit, I have never shopped at JCP before lol

You've never shopped at JCP before?!?!?!!? 😱

hahaha sad yes I know! long island (NY) girl here just like every other girl I'm a strict forever21 kind of person. They just make it easy to find things like "hmm I need a cardigan...oh let me go to the room with the sweaters" and BAM there it is!! After car payment, car insurance, cell phone and credit card bills, a twenty-something dollar top just really does it for me. 😀

Yeah, SDN has totally made me neurotic 🙂.

I had most of my secondaries in by the end of August; however, I had to wait for one last LOR to be complete at any of these schools.

I'll be honest: yes, I am worried! I haven't gotten any interview invites yet, and I am getting concerned.

Have you two gotten interviews yet?

I went to Macy's today and bought a really nice suit for 50% off. They have pretty much all their suits on sale (and like everything else in the store) through tomorrow for Columbus day.

I was waiting on LORs too. I was just now complete this past week (I usually just stalk threads, never post haha), and I have an interview without stellar stats. So no worries september completers- there will still be plenty of people completing after you!

Hope you all hear from one of your schools soon!

Just went to two interviews this past week and have another one scheduled, but that was all state schools. I still haven't heard from the others yet, so we'll see how that goes! Here's to hoping for some news soon...

Oh and our mall just got a Forever 21 last semester...and it's pretty much the only store worth going to here. Sad. (even though I 😍 some of their stuff)

I've only been to one so far.

Hi, ladies:

Sorry if this has been discussed before, but it's a really long thread. Anyway, I have decided to go with my skirt suit (black, pretty conservatively cut, but with hot pink pinstripes--you can't really tell they're pink unless you look closely, though). However, I'm probably going to be interviewing when it's cold out, so would a pink turtleneck sweater and knee-high boots look appropriate for an interview? I know it would look cute, but the question is would it look too casual for an interview? Or should I go the cookie-cutter route and freeze my *ss off? Note: I grew up on an island and I live in a state where winters are relatively mild, so my definition of cold is probably much warmer than most people's.

IMHO, the turtleneck sounds fine but I'm a little iffy on the boots...

I agree with this. I don't think the boots are a good idea personally. Knee-high boots would make the outfit look less professional.

I also agree. The turtleneck is fine, but I personally wouldn't wear boots.

i was planning on wearing a short boot (up to my ankles) under my pant suit, so its not going to show.. would that also be unprofessional in case it shows when I sit down?! I liked it because it covers my entire foot and I can wear socks with them and it would be comfortable! they look pretty professional though and my pants covers it up so only the hills and the front shows.. what do you guys think?

I think this will be fine!! The shoes are generally not exposed. I think those would be perfect underneath the pants.

That's what I often wear when I interiew applicants! It will be fine.

Hi guys! Another fellow Sept completer (LATE Sept actually :scared:) about to go on my first interview. I think I'm going to wear a black Banana Republic skirt suit with a silky blouse and black heels. Is the consensus that panty hose are a must? Also- is it OK to wear ballet flats for the tour and change into heels before the interview? And should I just dart into the bathroom? Has anyone done this? Thanks!

personally, i think it's tacky when women don't wear pantyhose.

also-- are you not wearing a blazer or jacket of some sort over the blouse? today i was at an interview where one girl was not wearing a suit (just a nice skirt and blouse) and she DEFINITELY stood out. you just have to decide if that's something you'll be comfortable with.

and yes, wear flats and change for the interview. you will likely have a few minutes to put yourself together post-tour (if your interview is in the afternoon) or pre-interview if you get there a bit early (if it's in the morning).

Oh yah- it's a skirt suit with a jacket.

But I am thinking of wearing like a houndstooth skirt and black blazer for another interview- is that a no-no because it's not a suit? Sigh...I'm much more of a sweatpants kind of girl.

haha me too... but luckily i also love dressing up 🙂

idk, the hippie inside of me wants to say F the conventions and wear a non-suit... but every time i've seen someone in a non-suit at an interview, it seems sort of... off. like they missed the memo or something. maybe it's just me.

but anyway, i think you can rock a suit in your own way and still look fashionable and unique. at least, i hope.

Haha yah- my inner hippie frequently rears its ugly head too (Maybe it's a MA thing?). I think I may try to wear the skirt/blazer combo as it's still very conservative. I wish I had a friend coming with me or something to tell me if I look like an idiot before my interview because I'm totally the type of person who has trouble looking put together.

You guys are seriously overthinking it if you think pantyhose (or the lack thereof) is going to make a difference at all.

Change shoes in the hallway right before you get to the room you're interviewing in if you must! I know I did...

well, it might not make a difference but why take that chance? I have been a supervisor in a professional environment and when we had female summer interns who were required to go into formal, professional settings and did not wear stockings with skirts, it was noted and we did advise them that their bare legged state was inappropriate for the circumstances. I hate wearing stockings but I do it when circumstances dictate (like during med school interviews)

Personally, now that the weather has changed, I appreciate the intsy bit of added warmth provided by pantyhose. I also think it finishes off a skirt suit rather nicely - makes you like nice and crisp from head to toe!

We only half-care. I think we just like talking about our outfits and taking a break from general SDN douchery.

Lol I get that. It is kind of fun talking about this stuff.

Hello ladies,

Forgive me if this has been discussed already....

I'm a perfume kind of gal...Have yal worn, or do you think it's ok to put a lil on? Of course I won't shower in it, but do you think it's ok to wear? I'm asking this because I know some people have allergies and when I volunteer in the hospital it's forbidden...so yeah, what do yal think?

i didn't claim it would "make a difference" to wear pantyhose. i simply think women look better in them. i wear them when i go to work every day-- they do not make you look frumpy 🙄; they make you look polished.

i wear perfume pretty much every day, but only one spritz. i feel like the subtle effect has built up over time/fused into my neck skin and clothes so that i don't wear any on interview days

We are touring through the hospital so I am avoiding perfume on my interview this Friday. I will smell of soap and deodarant....which both attest to my long standing belief in cleanliness.🙂

I agree with not wearing perfume. But if my soap just so happens to smell like Philosophy's Falling in Love...😍

Another question about pantyhose/knee highs. So I'm wearing a pant suit, so you can only really see a little bit of the top of my foot. My question is, are hose necessary in this situation, especially with a pant suit? The issue here is I bought the shoes with comfort insoles a while ago and have worn them a few times while shadowing, so I can no longer return them. They fit fine when I'm not wearing any socks/hose, but when I am wearing hose, my feet tend to slip out. I'm assuming that not wearing hose is probably better than tripping/walking awkwardly because my foot slips out of my shoe, but I'm wondering if its ok or if I should try and find some other type of thicker hose/socks or something to wear. What do you guys think?

with pants? you'll be fine to go hose-less.

yea, I'm going with heck no on that one. Hose under pants? eww.

lol. I meant more like knee highs/ankle highs...not actual panty hose...which would be a little weird under pants.

But thanks for the advice guys, I'll just not wear the knee highs, you can't see much of my foot anyway, and I figure its better than tripping. 🙂

Even so, it's still constrictive and makes your feet sweat.

Just a note: I put two safety pins on the inside of my suit hidden in the tag "just in case" and I am sooooooo glad I did. I had never worn my suit for an extended period and I found out it has a very easy to open zipper! I was able to avoid flashing my undies because of the pins I had stashed away. Also I had slipped an extra pair of knee highs into my planner (you know those cheep ones that come in the plastic egg) anyhow it was a rainy muddy day and I got mud all over one of my stockings and was able to make a quick change in the rest room.

Oh, please remember to brush your hair! Seriously, I saw two girls who had bed head and sloppy pony tails. Ponytails are fine but when you have stray hairs, lumps and random bobby pins it does not look professional.

Awesome ideas on both counts. I'll definitely be adding a safety pin to mine when I get back home. Another nice things to bring - an umbrella! I was amazed at the applicants who were utterly unprepared for the weather at my last interview. I have a small folding umbrella that I tuck into my purse - it won't hold up to heavy winds, but it would work for a rainy day in a pinch.

I've also thought about carrying an emergency poncho - they are more compact, and might help more than an umbrella in nasty weather.

I am not too sure if this has been asked..but I am not a big fan of suits. Do you guys think a waistcoat over a dress shirt is ok..or is it a bit unprofessional.

Thanks

Yeah this one has been discussed, but I don't mind answering. It seems to be consensus here that a suit is the only way to go in order to look professional and polished.

Hi Ladies,

I'm wearing ankle boots to my interviews - they don't look much different from pumps under my pants suit and they offer many advantages 1)they cover your whole foot so your feet won't be cold in winter weather 2)you can wear socks with then which adds a layer of comfort and absorbs any sweat produced by nerves : / 3)more ankle support so they're easier to walk in even with a higher feel. I got mine at Target last year.

For extra support and comfort I tucked some Dr Scholl's gel things into the shoes - I have no problem whatsoever standing in these for hours (I do this often for work in a medical clinic). My boots are very simple so they don't look to "fashioney" - they are black (faux) suede with an almond-shaped toe and tall, stacked thin heel that is almost completely covered by the pant leg.

Also, I bought the pantsuit at H&M, on a total fluke too. This worked out great because H&M's small sizes start SMALL - I am 5'2 and about 103 lbs but still curvy so I needed a suit built around curves but small waist and bones. H&M did the trick: no alterations needed except to shorten sleeves/legs. Petite women out there may understand this miracle.

Hope this helps! Good luck

what do you guys think of this black jacket on the right ? appropriate?
