WSU CVM 2019

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If the wait list isn't ranked, do you know how it works?
The most accurate information that I got last year (from Dr. Talcot herself) was a bit vague and unsatisfying but she said that when a position becomes available the committee comes together and reevaluates the applicants. I also know that Dr. Talcot has the final word.

Got my letter in the mail yesterday saying I'm an alternate. Kinda bummed, even though I was accepted to another school.

Does anyone know the deadline for when the accepted students need to accept/decline their offer?

I think April 15th like it is for most vet schools.

Yep. They are all 4/15 I think, enforced by the AVMA to keep things uniform. One of their few sane requirements.

Just got back from visiting Pullman and Moscow, and I LOVE the area (of course I should mention that I am originally from a tiny rural town and have been suffering in California for the last four years so my opinion is pretty skewed in what I like in a town). I have been in an interesting situation where I actually got accepted to WSU in November without an interview and haven't been in direct contact with anybody from the university at all. I also got accepted into OSU and CSU. I have eliminated OSU as I just cannot fathom dealing with the weather there, and honestly I am pretty against living in a large city for another 4 years in Fort Collins. However, I guess I am afraid that WSU's program may not be substantial enough? I can't find much on the internet about the program and can't attend any of the info meetings and orientations they have before the April deadline so I am flying by what I am told here and hopefully what the admissions people can tell me this week (I emailed them some questions about curriculum and what not). If any currently attending students have any testaments or opinions about the program or if anybody who attended the interview sessions have any info on the program that really stuck out as unique that would be awesome. I don't know why I am struggling with this decision so much since its clear I favorite WSU but I am (and I am so sorry to be posting this right after questions about waitlisting, I am not trying to be rude, I just came across this site today and this forum seems the most relevant in terms of getting my questions answered).

I'm a current WSU student and I'm very happy here. Do you have any specific questions I could answer? As far as what is unique about WSU, I think the Diagnostic Challenge program is pretty different and we get good surgical skills training starting in our first semester which I know my friends at other vet schools do not. And everyone talks about the communication training which I don't particularly enjoy but I'm sure it is good for me ☺. Really I think the education you will get is very similar among vet schools and for me by far the primary criteria in choosing a school is the cost.

Sorry to start up this thread again, but I was hoping someone might be able to provide some advice.

How cold does it get in Pullman ? I currently live in Vancouver, and it does occasionally dip below freezing, but the winters are generally milder and rainier than I would expect Pullman to get.

Should I try to stock up on some winter gear now, while it's on clearance?

I am so excited!

The part about weather might help: http://www.city-data.com/city/Pullman-Washington.html#b
I don't think it gets ridiculously cold, compared to other vet schools, but people I know who have lived there say it gets in the teens-twenties regularly in the winter.

Any accepted students have a sense of when financial aid stuff starts being put together? I got my WSU aid app as well as the FAFSA in well ahead of the deadlines, but haven't heard anything yet. Admittedly they don't even have a final class roster until May presumably, but I don't want to find I've missed filling something out.

I have already received and accepted my financial aid offer. It should be on your zzusis page?
I just went to portal.wsu.edu and logged on. The link to Check Your Financial Aid should be under the Financial Aid tab (for me that was on the left hand side).

Hey, thanks. You're right, I have an aid offer in there too. Honestly I would have expected an email notification about that sort of thing, but I guess it doesn't matter.

They sent me an email saying I had my aid, but it was in my spam box for some reason. That's what might of happened.

It depends on the year. I think you'll like a nice warm jacket and some snow boots. Also a warm hat. That ought to keep you ok for any outdoor lab type activities in the cooler temperatures. It's nothing too extreme, but it does get in the low teens and sometimes zero for a week or so in the coldest part of winter. You won't have too much reason to go outside, mostly you'll run from your car to the building where you will remain trapped studying 😉

You'll want snow gloves and a windshield scraper to get ice off your car in the morning and keep your hands warm while driving until the car heats up. Or maybe you're fancier than I was and have an actual garage. Lucky, lucky, people with garages.

I got by ok with some layers, insulated snowboots, a nice heavy fleece jacket and a thick fleece hat. A down jacket would be a nice luxury, but you can get by without it. It's so dry over there that any rain coats will barely be used. I used my snow gloves every time I had to scrape off my car. Which was a lot.

I'd suggest you save up your money for studded tires. Pretty much everyone gets them. I guess you can do all weather tires, but I personally would vouch for the studded ones. Got me through some pretty crazy conditions. You'll need those more than a nice jacket, especially if you don't live next to the school.

The word from Dr. Talcot is that due to higher number of people accepting WSU offers than was expected the Class of 2019 is actually over capacity. So no one is coming off the wiatlist this year.

Oh no! Over capacity? Do you know what that will mean for our class of 2019? What do they do when that happens?

Huh. Good luck with that one. My class was at proper capacity and I sat on the floor some lectures because there were only exactly enough seats. So if you're a tad late or things are shuffled around in the back: floor spot! (I'm specifically talking about ADBF's lecture hall) There was also just a chair - no small desk attachment. So BYO writing surface aka binder.

I know they've done some renovations since then and perhaps there's some cool new lecture hall in the global health building? But honestly, it was pretty crap that we paid a new car in student loans every year and sometimes you didn't get a desk.

And for fairness sake, I suppose if you staked out a seat out front that your buddies held for you and you're always on time, I guess you don't have a problem. But for those of us who preferred the back and weren't always as prompt it was a bum deal.

I highly doubt they would rescind any admissions offer, so if they've got over capacity acceptance they'll probably find a way to deal with it. But dealing with it may translate into some jenky circumstances.

Anybody know if Wsu reviews applications with denied students ?

They do. I don't know what the process is, but one of my co-workers was given feedback on her application. Just a quick "your application was strong in this way and lacking in this" kind of thing.

Do we need to have gotten the rabies vaccination series by the time school starts in August?

Nope. I don't even have it now. (It would be cool if I did, but in a perfect world... I also have several colleagues who haven't gotten it either. If the clinic would step up and pay for it that'd be another matter entirely. But forking out $800 of my own money isn't going to happen at this point. I have been thinking of working overseas though, and if that was the case I would defnitely do it. If someone knows a reasonably priced way to get it, I'm all ears)
