WSU 2024-2025 (c/o 2029 hopefuls)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone here know how easy it is to establish residency as OOS after the first year? Guess just trying to ascertain if there is lot of red tape or not. TIA!

I’ve talked to the admission office and from what I can tell, it’s pretty easy and almost everyone gets it. There’s a lot of information on the website, but from what I can tell they’re really helpful and most people get it! You have to pay rent in washington, get a Washington drivers license, register to vote in Washington, and get car insurance in Washington if you have a car I believe but am not [emoji[emoji[emoji6]][emoji[emoji6][emoji6]]][emoji[emoji[emoji6]][emoji[emoji6]]][emoji[emoji[emoji6]][emoji[emoji6]]]% sure.

Hey all! After much thought and deliberation, I have decided to accept my offer. I am OOS pulled from preliminary screening non-resident pool for those who are curious. Anyways, does anybody have information or mind re-sharing links to social media platform(s) (i.e., discord, etc.) that are being used for class of 2029? Excited to meet ya'll this coming August!

Congratulations on accepting your seat!
For the FB page you'll be added by Amie, but there's another page called WSU CVM Students: classifieds. You should be able to join this group.
And the link to join the discord group:WSU 2029

Anyone have insight to sizing of white coats? I’m filling out the student forms and it wants me to pick a size it says akin to what you would get a dress shirt or blouse in… I’m in between sizing I’m worried it will be way too big if I size up? Is the coat fitted ? Sorry this is such a strange question 😭

This was something I was wondering about too as I am also in between sizes. Ultimately went on larger end especially if I am going to have layers on underneath. Would rather have extra room that allows me to be more comfortable and I guess could always get it tailored later on if I wanted to make it more fitted 🙂

They are unisex so they run rather large IMO. I typically wear a small (4-6) in other clothes and the small white coat is very boxy/large on me. YMMV depending on your build/body type. Honestly it's more of a memento thing anyway; in 4th year you can get white coats from the scrub machine in the hospital for daily use.

I have just decided to let go of my Idaho seat! I hope @HebBrig gets in soon, I know you’ve been hoping to get in!

Hey ya'll! Posting this question more or less targeted at current students in Pullman or have lived in the area. Do you think it is worth it to get parking permit? I understand the city transit system is free and am well versed in using mass public transit having had to do it for college I attended in undergrad. Just didn't know how reliable the buses were and considering the vet school in Pullman at least is pretty centralized didn't know if benefits of parking on campus with personal vehicle outweighed the cost. TIA!

I've had a parking pass the entire time I've been attending WSU, and I like it for the convenience factor. It's up to you to weigh the pros and cons of the price vs the convenience- I do know people who only take the bus, and it seems like it is fairly reliable. You will likely need a car during 4th year, but public transit should be feasible for the first 3 years. You can refund your parking pass early and get some money back- my first 2 years, I sold mine back to the school the week before finals and just walked to campus for the last week, and got a decent amount of money back. If you do get a permit, I'll just say that the lot right in front of the vet school, while convenient, is hugely expensive (and gets worse every year). You can buy a cheaper permit (several hundred dollars cheaper!) and just have a 5-10 min walk instead.

Another student posted on FB recently that they paid $790 after taxes.... vs I paid $461 for a lot that's a slightly under 10 min walk from the vet school.

That feels criminal. Like WHY😭😭‼️

Hey guys I realize I am kind of late 😅 to probably post this but does anyone know if there are areas in Pullman to avoid (i.e., safety) and what areas off campus most people live? I am out of state for reference and am trying to put all the pieces together for cross country move quite literally coast to coast lol. Hoping that there is housing still available in Pullman that is decently priced or new places becoming available relatively soon. Also should add, FB isn't really an option for me rn even though am aware these pages for class/school do exist. TIA! 🙃😬

Pullman is a pretty safe town. In almost 10 years there I only ever felt unsafe when The Big Thing happened in 2022 and that was a crazy fluke situation. There are many apartment options- by #, probably most of the total WSU student population lives in "apartment land" which is the area north of campus (Aspen Village, Pine Ridge, Maple Valley, Cougar Ridge, The Grove, Pimlico, Birch Hills, The Retreat, The Flats, The Annex, etc). These are walking distance to campus (20-30 mins to the VTH probably) and on the bus routes. There's kind of something for everyone in this area.

Just north of town there are newer complexes (The Hills, Aspen Heights) - further from campus and not on official bus routes but I believe they offer their own shuttle to and from campus/grocery stores? These are more expensive and have lots of amenities.

Many vet students rent or own manufactured homes and there are a few communities in town - Campus Vista and Golden Hills are the "nicer" ones as far as I'm aware. I heard less than nice things about Terrace Estates from classmates.

There are more options off of campus - Military Hill (region NW of campus/W of Grand Ave), Sunnyside Hill (region SW of campus/W of Grand Ave), Pioneer Hill (region SW of campus/E of Grand Ave), and College Hill (region N of campus) have some properties for rent from private landlords and smaller rental companies. Your mileage may vary w/ these companies. The age-old rule in Pullman is do not rent from DRA. I had a good enough experience renting from DABCO for cumulatively 5 years. Nobody loves them but I'd rent from them again if I needed to.

Hope that helps a little!

Wow! Thank YOU so much! This was really informative! Never been to Pullman or WA (outside of a connecting flight in Seattle hahaha if that even counts) for that matter so have lately been feeling kind of out of my depth looking for places but having this as a guide is really helpful for sure.

As a follow-up question, are there housing options to live on-campus through the university or is that limited to undergrads? And if those options do exist are they even worth considering (i.e., cost) or would it be better to stick to places off-campus?

Also, if anyone here is looking for a roommate do feel free to DM me! 🙂

There is on-campus graduate student housing; I had some classmates who lived there. I don't know anything about cost. I do know they are not pet friendly if that is a problem for you. The undergraduate student housing fills up pretty early on, so if graduate housing is similar, there might not be any left. I do not think they are particularly nice units either. Families & Grad Students

There is also the option of living in Moscow - rent in Idaho is typically cheaper but you would need to factor in the 15ish min commute plus time to find parking and walk to class. I had many classmates who lived in Moscow. The town itself is much cuter and I would have gladly lived there if I didn't have a dog who I wanted to be able to let out during the day as time allowed. Living there would be more of an inconvenience in 4th year IMO when you are on-call or have the opportunity to go home for a while midday on occasion. I am not sure if you can live there if you are trying to establish WA residency for tuition purposes; I imagine you cannot.

I was just looking at the updated class of 2029 statistics page and it looks like they admitted 10 fewer people than planned. Does anyone know why they would choose to do that as opposed to pulling off the waitlist to fill those spots? I’m mostly a little cranky because a lot of those spots were for Washington residents and I wonder if they were going to fill all of them if I would have been pulled off the waitlist? Probs not, but it makes me wonder
