which plan says that it is non-renewable?? where does it say that? i don't see it...

If you look at the SOMA booklet where we have the choice of 3 medical plans, on page 3, 3rd paragraph down under the table, the first sentence reads, "This plan issued to SOMA is a one year non-renewable term policy." I don't think it is a primary plan though. I think it is in addition to another plan we would be carrying, but still, why enroll in a non-renewable plan??

I haven't looked too closely at the other plans yet, but if anyone finds a resonable one that doesn't require us to use only WV hospitals and doctors, please post it!!

Hi guys!

I got accepted to WVU on friday, so after much thought I have decided to go there instead...

However, I have an apartment lined up in Lewisburg, so if I don't find someone to take the spot, I will have to pay for some of the rent!! YIKES!

So I am hoping someone on here is still looking for a place, or wants a "better" place....

The apartment is brand new, two bedrooms and is right across the street from WVSOM... so it is definitely within walking distance of the school...

If you are interested you can call J.D. Loudermilk at 304-646-7149!!!!

Thanks guys!! And I wish you all the best!! Hopefully I will see some of you during 3rd and fourth year rotations and residency!!!

Soma is a one year, non-renewable, meaning if you are being treated for a sickness (major) when the year is up, they have the right to not renew your policy for the following year. I don't know if that means that they just cut you off at that point and you're screwed or what. They don't require you to use WV doctors, do they??--I didn't see this anywhere. SOMA is a national company. Which plan, other than the major medical ones requires you to pay the deductible for doctor's visits???? I saw online that this network was pretty large. I found doctors in NC where I am. I'm still on the fence about it too, though.

Hey
Ok my computer is acting wierd and I hope this gets posted. I just wanted to add that I am going to be living in one of those apartments and it is a great place. Wonderful location, brand new building, private deck, washer and dryer in unit, and reasonable price. Also the landlord and super cool. He will even let you have pets if you talk to him ( he is letting me have my 200lb dog- I figure he is up for anything !) I hope this helps. Brianne --Good luck ! I will miss you :-(

I know Mr. Loudermilk, he's pretty cool. A good guy. I'll put the word out and see if I can find anyone who is interested. Don't lose hope because with the class size that is coming, someone is bound to need a place to live 🙂

Hey brianne,

I am actually in Lewisberg looking for an apartment today. I am interested in the apartment that you are talking about. Could you tell me more about it? Maybe we can work something out.

hey sk8doc, i pm'd you! 🙂

I had emailed the bookstore over a week ago with no reply and now I hear they are closing for the next two weeks. My cell doesn't get good reception at work so I could never call during the hours they were open. I wanted to see what other books/materials I should have right now. I have the medical terminology book already. Thanks!! Lori

hey jiggles, does that mean that we have to pay the full deductible (by going to the hospital) and then we can get our office visits? i don't get it.
Hey guys. Don't panic too much over the insurance. Take out the best plan you can afford, and then put it to rest.

As to office visits. . . as long as you have a valid reason for the visit, if your insurance doesn't pay, student health picks up the bill. At least that's the way it has been since I started 3 years ago. BUT you do have to show proof of insurance, so don't think you can get off scot-free!

Best of luck to all of you as you begin your medical journey!

anyone know what time in the morning classes start. hopefully no earlier than 9am.

If you have the med terminology book then you are fine for now. There aren't any other books you NEED right now.

For PBLers group meets Monday and Wednesday and I dont know about Friday at 8 AM. For SBLers it varries; sometimes 9 and other times 8 am.

Could someone help me with the name of the Med. Term. book? I tried calling the bookstore, but they were closed. Is this a book that can only be purchased through the bookstore?

Thanks!!!

I think it is just called "Medical Terminology." It is a spiral bound book. I got mine off of amazon.com last year for like 2 or 3 dollars. It was an older edition but it doesn't matter.

I ordered my book from the school's bookstore and it is entitled quick and easy "Medical Terminology" 4th edition by Peggy C. Leonard. It comes with a cd-rom and cassette tape. I hope this helps.

I'm using the third edition cause a certain easter bunny left it for me 😀
Anyways, the isbn# is 0-7216-8271-5 if you wanted to get on half.com and find yourself a cheap copy.

What are the first year SBL classes????

Happy Birthday, Richie!!!!

Hello all! I am new to SDN, so I hope I am not just barging in on you all. I will be attending WVSOM in the 2010 class. I am going to be in the PBL track. I have moved to Lewisburg, but have been traveling back and forth from here and PA during my transition. I am very excited to begin classes, although I have read some very negative feedback on PBL--are there any others in PBL who would like to talk more about the track? Also, I welcome feedback from anyone because I would like to get to know all of my classmates better.

Fellow PBLER here!!

I guess I'm looking forward to that learning track partly due to the fact that the actual cases will help to solidify the information. I was a "loner" when it came to studying in undergrad, so I'm a little worried about interacting with a group though. All in all, I look forward to the track. I'm a very motivated individual who very strongly dislikes lectures; therefore, I think PBL is the right track for me. Why you chose it?

So who has made the move to the Lewisburg area so far? I just arrived 3 days ago...definitely still in the unpacking phase. All the boxes in the apartment are driving me nuts!

Glad to hear from you!! I am very motivated and dedicated to my goal of becoming a D.O., and I learn much better when I am able to apply information I have recieved to actual situations. Plus, I really enjoy working in a group--I have found in many cases several heads are better than one. 🙂 🙂 😀

I have moved into a beautiful new townhouse not far from town, which I was very lucky to find. I really enjoy Lewisburg so far: the people are very nice.

I'll be coming back to the school to give all of you PBLers a pep talk. 😉 So don't feel like you've been left out to dry. it works and it works well if you are motivated enough to do the work on your own.

It works better if you play a game of broomball while your here, Richie.

Brand New Littman Cardiology III Stethoscope for sale!!! (maybe: read below)

Alright, I've ended up receiving two of the above described stethoscopes. First, my dad brought one from the WVSOM bookstore for me for a Christmas present. Well, I just had a going away party at work the other night, and they chipped in and brought me one with my name inscribed on it (didn't have the heart to tell them I already had one). Both stethoscopes are identical with the latter having my name on it; thus, I plan to keep the one I just received cause the name is already on it. First, I'm gonna see if the bookstore will give me a full refund for the one my dad got me. Its hardly been out the box any. If they don't, I plan to sell it then. If anyone is interested, PM me for the price, and I'll sell it (cheaper than the bookstore price) if they don't want to refund the money.

Does anyone have suggestions on the type of stethoscope and oto-opthalmoscope that MSIs should buy? I want something that will perform well but also want to be able to avoid buying something unnecessarily expensive. Thanks!

Does anyone know of what banks are in WV? What are the popular ones? Any credit unions? The two banks that I frequent here won't be available in WV.

Anyone know anything about ING savings? Can we trust these ING banks considering that they all work online and don't have any physical bank buildings??

Look on the paper with the phone numbers (cable, electricity, etc) that came with the insurance info packet. I think it's yellow. (I'm at work right now, so I'm going off of memory. It lists the banks. I have had bank of america for over 10 years and the closest one is 40 miles away. I'm thinking about having two accounts or something.

I just went through my records and noticed that my CPR/AED certification expired...last month. Does anyone else still need to have this updated? More importantly, does anyone have any idea where I can get this certification? I asked in the admissions office when I was there, and they said I could get it through the Robert C. Byrd Clinic. I asked them and they gave me a bewildered look...which I guess means they don't do certifications there. Any ideas from people who have been here awhile?

you can always go to the AHA website....and search for a certification location nearby. you probably will have to retake the whole certification course, instead of the renewal (since your card has expired)

I don't know the specifics of ING, but I have a Capital One account which is primarily online. Capital one lets you transfer back and forth between any physical account that you choose. I imagine that ING is the same way. Or maybe I'm wrong.

I have an out of state bank and use ING direct. Other than not being able to quickly deposit loan money I've not had any issues.

The Orientation Schedule is now online along with a bunch of other info.

http://www.wvsom.edu/students/Orientation.cfm

Something to notice is that we need our laptops on Tuesday... which if you are like me is a little difficult since we don't get our financial aid until the 7th. Oh well someday I won't be broke... maybe 😳

FYI: many states are having a tax free weekend Aug 4-6, so this is a great time to buy a computer. I know for sure VA and SC. And even if this doesn't apply to WV, VA is like an hour drive away.
Circuit City and Best Buy will probably be having some great deals too.

nobody's posted in a great while. i guess everyone is doing their final goodbyes and packing and such (well thats what i'm doing this week anyways)

I'm finally in Lewisburg and am just trying to get settled in. If anyone wants to go check out the town PM me. Also, I live in the new town homes off of Washington so if anyone lives there and wants to meet a neighbor let me know! See you all soon.
