WVU acceptance/waitlist

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
received the waitlist letter today

go figure

tictaq:

Do you want to start a group on facebook called "If you let me into WVU I'll do your laundry for a year?"

(just kidding I'm not on facebook but I'm bored and wanted to bump this thread)

I have been following the thread some. I just got a waitlist letter today. I was hoping it would be better news, but from the posts it seemed that my late interview could at best get me on the waitlist, so I guess I can't complain. I'm down for doing some laundry in my spare time.

I say we start a Powerball pool, and then when we win, we'll offer it all to WVU to let in all the people on this thread. Still too many chances, though, I guess....hmmm, laundry it is then!

just got the letter saying that i am still on waitlist.

🙁

people on the waitlist,

have you been accepted anywhere else?
As for me...I have been waitlisted at two other schools and haven't heard back from one post-interview.

Waitlisted at 2 other IMPOSSIBLE schools (Pitt and Case Western)

I still haven't received anything in the mail from WVU, anyone know the latest date we should expect something?

Recent letter from WVU:

Dear beege,

Thank you for your consideration of WVU School of Medicine. We apologize at this time we cannot offer you enrollment and thus are taking you off the waitlist. We know this will come as quite a shock, so an explaination is given below.

(in different font)

From the photo you sent in we thought you were pretty cute. Your scores and GPA were less than impressive for WVU's high academic standards but we thought we should give you a chance based solely that you might be eye-candy for our female staff and faculty. Unfortunately, upon interviewing you, we found that you looked nothing like the Calvin Klein model frolicking in the beach picture. Frankly, 29 out of the 30 admission committee members thought you looked more like the Hunchback of Notre Dame. And when we say Hunchback, we mean the cartoon character Disney made up a couple years back but with contrasting colors. When was that picture taken anyway? When you were 16? We're taking a pool that it isn't even you. Please confirm.

We recommend (among improving all aspects of your AMCAS application) that you go on a serious diet and maybe think about investing in a tanner.

Seriously, you're paler than an Albino Irishman on chemo.

Good luck in trying to geting into medical school with your numerous talents and attributes (mainly that you have good handwriting).

Love

WVU.

P.S. You remember your dog when you were 10 years old, Buster...well it was us that ran over him.

haha imagine if they actually wrote that

Funny letter...I guess I'm not the only one upset at WVU for waitlisting us🙂

I still haven't received anything in the mail from WVU, anyone know the latest date we should expect something?

i am thinking you should have received something in the mail by now...unless the mail takes forever coming at your city. if you don't hear something by end of this week, i'd give them a call early next week.

i am right there with you...upset 🙁 !

Okay, so I've decided (well, actually I decided a long time ago) that I'm really going to stick this out. I'm going to stay positive -- to the best of my ability. I don't care if WVU accepts me at midnight, the night before classes start...I'm getting in my car, driving 8 hours (probably speeding) and making it to class with just a notebook, a pen, and a 16-pak of Red Bull.

On a lighter note, has anybody heard anything, or have any plans to change WVU's mind?

FYI for those lurking who may not have gotten anything in the mail yet...

I called the Student Services office today and Beth Ann left yesterday and is out of town until Thursday. They said she sent out letters on Wednesday before she left, so I'm assuming that was the last batch of letters. So for those of you haven't gotten anything yet (which includes me), something should be coming soon. Good luck

I'm with ya, beege. Maybe we should make it a 32-pack of Red Bull.

As for doing anything to change their minds...I'm not sure what to do at this point. A couple days before I received my original waitlist letter (several months ago), I sent what I thought was a very good letter of intent. Then, last month, I sent them an update. I about laughed (if I wasn't already upset at the waitlist, I would've laughed) at the wording in the latest waitlist letter about how updates might improve our standing, since most of the suggested updates were included in the update I sent in February (last semester's grades, a new publication, 2 new volunteer experiences--one medical, a new second job, etc.). So, I really don't know what will convince them that my "standing" should be "improved". I'm praying that by the end of the semester I'll have something to "update" them with. Otherwise, I don't know if it is overkill to send a second letter of intent. I've thought about calling them and asking if I could talk to someone about my application (as to why it is insufficient) so that I can use the suggestions to improve for reapplying (though there's not much time to do anything before reapplying). But I don't want to reapply, I want to get in now. *stomps foot* Maybe I should just go and stand outside their offices everyday with a copy of my application and keep handing it to them. Maybe they'll get annoyed enough and accept me.

I think the letter is probably generic and sent to everyone regardless of whether or not you sent them updates

does anyone know how many people are on the waitlist? I don't know how many we started out with last year but in late july they had 30 and then every few days it went down until 6 (and i was one of those 6) and then i called the day of orientation and everyone showed up. i was so mad...it was my last hope but it didn't pull through for me! So this year, I applied with high hopes only to be waitlisted again! why?

I know what you are talking about. I was one of the six waiting when orientation began last year. I am not sure how many there are on the list this year but maybe my acceptance is a good omen for you this year. Hang in there!

Did those of you who reapplied, did you redo the secondary essays or use the same ones?

I rewrote the essays for style and structure but kept most of the substance the same.

I changed the structure and the wording and some of the substance was also added and some was taken out!

I'm waitlisted at WVU, too. I got my letter a couple of months ago and haven't heard anything since. I'm OOS though so I guess my chances are slim to none. 🙁 I'm waitlisted at another school and waiting to hear back from one more. Blah.

are interviews done at WVU? and also has anyone found out about how many people are on the waitlist?

you are living in PA...so your chances of getting in are higher than the ones living further away with no ties.

that sucks to hear...did they actually tell you that you were one of the six not able to get off the list?

in the summer...i called them regulary to ask about any movements and she would always tell me the number of people still on the list. the week before orientation she told me there were 6 people and i called on friday before the oreintation and still 6 (including me). so the first thing on orientation day, i called her and she said that everyone showed up...which means no one on the waitlist will be called.

Just talked to Beth Ann and my letter got sent to the wrong address...doh! Anyways, I'm on the waitlist too. She said the waitlist is ordered alphabetically and my last name starts with an A so I'm not giving up hope, especially since only 6 people remained on the waitlist last year. Here's to being positive....

the waitlist is "ordered" alphabetically not ranked. also the rest of the people on last years wailist were not all accepted- some of them withdrew.

but don't lose hope. i called her up this morning...she said a 120-140 people on the waitlist as of right now. so let's see what happens after May 15th deadline.

people who have been accpeted at WVU and somewhere else read this and keep saying it to yourself and preety soon May 15th will come and you'll autmoatically say no to WVU, making the waitlist move quickly...you don't want to go to WVU...you don't want to go to WVU...

hopefully there's as much movement as there was last year

When they/you say 'ordered' does this mean the WL'ers at the top of the alphabet are taken first when spots open up and then so on down the alphabet? I think I may be a bit confused...

I think you can solve this pretty quickly: Guju does your last name start with a Z?

My last name starts with a P

just to clarify...it wasn't me who said that the waitlist is ordered alphabetically...it was bumpintahoe who posted it and it was according to BethAnn. There must have been a misunderstaning when bumpintahoe talked to BethAnn...because giving the spots to the person whose last name is earlier in the alphabet is ridiculous.

How the dialogue with Beth Ann went:

Me: Is it possible to find out where I'm ranked on the waitlist? (I was pretty sure their waitlist is unranked, but I asked anyways).

Beth Ann: Our waitlist is not ranked but is ordered alphabetically.

It sounded kind of unfair to me as well and took me off guard when I heard it, I'll probably call again sometime this week to get clarification.

If I recall correctly at my interview she said they randomly pull people off the waitlist but I may be wrong

although taking people off the waitlist by their last name sounds foolish

I concur, there's no way that they do it by last name. If they did however, I would be sending a update letter stating I changed my name to Aaron Aardvark 🙂

They do it randomly? so lets just pull a file from the pile and hey...whoever's file we pick will be the new acceptance.

altough the OP...did say "if I recall correctly"....but just the thought of pulling people randomly is ridiculous..but it is possible.....to give this process any more credibility...we must assume that everyone's application is at the same level of competitivness....now is this true? I can't tell you.

Yeah, I think (maybe) the randomness that BethAnn was talking about was in the order of re-reviewing of our files.

has anyone called to verify how they choose people off the waitlist for acceptance?

I am getting really anxious to find out if/when/which med school i'll get accepted to....2nd year applying and getting tired of applying with no results and just waiting.
will donate to SDN the first day of med school if i get accepted in the month of May, will donate if accepted in June (but not as much), and July (not as much as June)

somebody call, please...pretty please?

LOL...I guess my psychotherapy for relaxation is really paying off for me. I'm sitting tight until May 15, because I figure that's probably when the movement will officially begin.

If you want the name of my stress therapist, Pand, his name is Dr. Wang, and he touches your ear with this shock pole that magically makes you less worried. It has done wonders for me. I no longer strangle my cat, punch my roommates when they ask me about med school, or throw things at my professor while trying to explain to them how if I don't get those two points back on my homework, I'll get a B in the course, won't get into medical school, and kill myself🙂.

Oh, I forgot though, come May 15, I'll definitely call for you...

Looking forward to the waitlist movement....don't know if lot of SDNers are interested in WVU or not...but nobody has posted on the acceptance withdrawal wall.

I wish May 15 would get here already. I think I am developing a compulsion about checking my mail. Wait lists are almost crueler than rejections....almost.

hang in there...also remember that some people are accepted mid-june, july, august and even the day of the orientation.

For those of you who wrote letters of intent to WVU, who did you address the letter to? Beth Ann or the Admissions Committee?
