Yale Class of 2012 Thread: Wuddup Nutmeg State!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congratulations Petrarch!

It's too bad you missed the open house, but as you may have gathered, Yale seems an amazing atmosphere with fantastic departments and researchers =).

What were you up to in China?

yeah, it's a bummer that I missed the open house. But you are right, it's the amazing research that attracted me. Yale has exactly what I am interested in and none of the other schools even came close.

I was doing a hypertention and heart disease research internship in the minority villages of Southern China. It was rough and I even lost some weight, but absolutely worthwhile.

did anyone else get an email saying how to activate the NetID, but they haven't received their NetID and System ID number from the SPH yet? I'm reluctant to email the SPH if they are just behind Student/Financial Student Services section....anyone in this sitch?

That sounds like an awesome experience petrarch

Also phealth99, I just got the NetID email today and sent an email to admissions about it. But the main purpose was to find out if they've received my Financial forms. Also we need a netid to setup ID cards before June, so I wanted to get that done asap.

I received info directly from the SPH office a few days after receiving the 2 emails about the netID from another office (and those 2 emails were a day or so apart). I don't think that you need to contact the office just yet. Also, a few days ago I received an email about where to electronically submit (or mail) a photo for my ID card. That should be sent to you soon.

Just got an email from Grad Housing with a confirmation that I have a room in Harkness. In the next sentence of the email, they informed me that there is a major construction project that "is expected to be somewhat noisy for the next 12-15 months". 🙁 I think I will still take it because from what I understand we will be in class basically all day and the construction can't be happening at night, right? For the sake of convenience and price, I am going to roll the dice on this one....maybe it will be much ado about nothing.

Anyone else narrowing down the housing search?

hey sjd24 i got the same email. but i'm pretty sure the HGS housing is the only one with the construction, so harkness should be all set. but it's unfortunate that they only gave us a few days to confirm!

LOL, I totally misread the email. No construction behind Harkness! Thanks phealth99. Yeah, only the weekend to confirm seems kinda quick. I'm going to take it...you can't beat a 3 min commute to class, ha.

There's no construction at Harkness (anymore), but there is right by the PH school (they're building a power plant) and the backside of Harkness is right up against the major on-ramp to the interstate, so if you're on the backside, I'd definitely try and request a room on the courtyard side.

So, I was just offered a 1-bdrm apartment at the York Crown Complex (grad student housing). The rent is $966/month (including utilities and internet) but it's not furnished. The lease is from Aug. 1 - June 30th. This is a major plus if we want to leave for the summer for an internship. Any thoughts? Has anybody lived here and/or had any experience(s) with this complex?

Any help/input would be much appreciated.🙂

Hey!

So, I'm currently a first year MPHer (in policy) and I saw that there's been some discussion about housing on here, so I thought I'd throw this out there:
Myself and two other MPH students currently live in a three bedroom apartment right near YSPH. Lots of other Yale MPH students lives in our complex, and we're in the process of trying to rent the apartment for next year. Below is the listing we've been using for the apartment. If anyone is interested, feel free to contact me!! Also, I know it's a 3 BR and most incoming students don't know eachother yet...but, last year, I actually found one of my roommates on SDN and the other I met at visit day...and, you'll get a first year list-serve soon. Given the price and location, it would be really easy to find others to live with you. Anyway, here's the info 🙂

Large, FURNISHED 3 bedroom apartment for rent in a gated complex in downtown, New Haven. Very close to Yale and the medical school. The apartment has a large, open living room, ample kitchen space, a breakfast bar, 3 good-sized bedrooms with closets, 3 additional closets in the hallway, 1 bathroom with a shower/tub, and private outdoor patio. Heat and hot water are INCLUDED in rent! Dishwasher, garbage disposal, AC units, large coin-op laundry facility, and garage/surface parking on site. Only $1825/month which INCLUDES furniture, heat, and hot water!!! Landlord is great and responsive. We are only leaving because we are now in need of a 2 bedroom, but this is one of the best deals in New Haven!!!

Lease begins June 1st, but may be negotiated. Subletting is permitted also.

Yep, it's that time of the season: FACEBOOK GROUPS! haha. Here are some pertinent ones that I've found 🙂

The second one is definitely a cool place to keep in contact with both current YSPH students and alum-- one alum recently posted an interesting bit on Pepsi's affiliation with Yale Med. Kind of a slow group, but I'm sure it's just because it's relatively newish-- and the more the merrier, eah?

Stellar idea-- housing can get pricey for a 1br.

I just spent the weekend in New Haven nailing down a place to live-- signed a lease on Livingston Street with a fellow MPHer whom I met at the open house. Super pumped. I learned a good bit about which parts of town are safe (I picked the brains of a couple of [kevlar-vest-wearing] police officers for a good 45 minutes while walking near Dwight after dark... not advisable), which companies to go through (Chelsea and CA White are solid for downtown living, but I'd highly recommend heading to East Rock or Science Hill), etc. if any one needs some tips.

Just signed the contract to live in Harkness. As an undergrad I never got to live in the dorms so I feel like I am making up for a lost "mandatory" college experience, ha. I am coming from California so Harkness seemed like the best move b/c it is way too expensive to haul furniture (or anything that can't fit in my car) all the way to CT. Although, not to happy about having to buy a meal plan...I guess it is food that I would be buying/eating anyway in the long run. I figured I could use it up between lunch everyday and excessive amounts of coffee drinking 😀

Anyone have experience eating at Marigold's (Stories?) now that it will be my lunch spot (and likely that of others)? I found the dining services website...but pictures and menus are one thing...

Werd, congrats on the new place. I will definitely chat you up about off campus housing come next year. I have a feeling one year of dorm life will be sufficient, ha.

Marigold's is your typical cafeteria fare. Salad bar, grill (for burgers and such), pizza, and a rotating entree. It's expensive for no reason and it's not even open on the weekends, but luckily this is right outside our doors (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/25/nyregion/25dinect.html). 🙂

Stories, that looks unbelievably amazing. Best part, I can probably smell this from Harkness.

Ah, LSPH lunch is going to be wonderful!

Thanks SJD, and congrats on Harkness! I hear very good things-- as far as dorm living goes, H$ is supposed to be tops. I'll keep you updated on how I like Grad Haven.

:ninja:

So how do these meal plans work? People living in Harkness pre-pay Marigold's meals?

Thx!

Meal plan at Marigold's is like a debit card. You pay however much the cost of the meal plan is, and you get that amount on your card. You then spend it how you will (Marigold's is all per individual item charge, not buffet-style like most dining halls). Harkness folks are all required to buy the meal plan.

Thanks Stories! One more question: are there lots of people around in July/August? I'm starting in July and I'm wondering whether it'll be super-quiet or not....!!

I'll be there at the end of this month to start some research-- so at least we'll have each other, haha.

Great! I'm looking forward to meeting you in July then!!!

Hey Werd,

I'm glad to hear you have next year's housing figured out! That's one less thing to worry about.
I was wondering if you know anything in terms of safety about the area around 127 Winchester? http://www.bing.com/maps/default.as...TEzLjk2NTAyMjU3Nzk5ODglN2UtMTI1LjA5NjM1OTI1Mg==

It's on the west side of the University, not quite East Rock. A few grad students and I are looking into housing and that is our top choice.

There are some people there, although it's much quieter without any of the undergrads around. It's mostly all the doctoral students (in all disciplines) around that are doing research. There's not as much school-related activities going around, but summer is a good time to hang out in New York 🙂

Look me up, we'll hang when you get here.

Hey Petrarch,

I wish I could help, but, unfortunately, I didn't venture that far to the northwest during my search-- I mostly looked to the north, south, a bit east, and southwest of campus. Haha, go figure. And the "where-not-to-live" map the police made me cuts off right around Mansfield Street.

Buuttt, if I remember correctly, Stories lives on Prospect, which is fairly close to Winchester, so he may be able to lend some advice. New Haven is strange, though: you can be on the nicest block in New Haven, and one street over will be a drug-den with regular muggings/violent crimes. So, I wouldn't take the mere fact that Stories lives nearby as a good sign.

Winchester is definitely rougher than you'd like it to be (which is odd considering its proximity to Science Hill and Prospect St (where I live)). For what it's worth there was a mugging this year on Mansfield St (where that whole sketch boarder begins). Winchester St. is immediately adjacent to a park and a housing project where there's some questionable activity (however, that park is also adjacent to the Yale PD Station).

Thanks guys for the input, I really appreciate it.
And about this amazing map of "where not to live," Werd, is it possible for you to send it to me?

Hey so I was talking to some Yale alumni at my school and they suggested having a car?
I plan on not taking on there (coming from the west) esp if I live on campus, Harkness...do you think that would be a wise choice? (Not needing one really?) just plan on studying and enjoying the campus...i wonder if stores are close by?

Hey Petrarch, sure thing! Shoot me a PM with your email address and I'll e-mail you a photo.

Car is especially convenient since there's no grocery stores in New Haven (only small marts), no effective way to get out of the immediate New Haven-area (except take the train to NYC), and the bus system leaves a lot to be desired.

You definitely don't NEED one, but it sure is fantastic to have one (I have one) and most of my friends have one, too. I think the only ones that don't have one are the ones living in Harkness or HGS. These are folks that chose to not get their own apartments, own furniture, etc. Probably part of the convenience thing.

Yeah, I hear Kandahar's not nearly as bad as New Haven 😉

This map covers the last 2 years worth of crime, and most of the crimes depicted are petty crimes. New Haven is no different than any other east coast city. Crime is part of the deal. Sometimes you gotta "buck up" and get some street smarts if you don't want to get robbed. And comparing New Haven to Kandahar (while I know you were joking) is disrespectful. You have decided to live in someone else's community, and hopefully you will choose to be a productive member of it and improve it, not make fun of it.

I'm exited to join the YSPH community (EHS) and the New Haven community. See you all in September!

Respectfully, I do not believe New Haven to be "no different than any other east coast city." I've spent a good bit of time in Providence, Boston, New York, and other NE cities, and New Haven stands alone in many aspects. It is a small city with a high incidence of crime in certain, broadly dispersed areas-- compared to NE cities of similar size (Manchester, Portland, Providence), the crime rate is MUCH higher: http://www.idcide.com/citydata/ct/new-haven.htm versus http://www.idcide.com/citydata/nh/manchester.htm and http://www.idcide.com/citydata/me/portland.htm and http://www.idcide.com/citydata/ri/providence.htm as is the poverty rate. Comparisons with Boston and NYC even show a noticeable discrepancy in crime rates http://www.idcide.com/citydata/ma/boston.htm and http://www.idcide.com/citydata/ny/new-york.htm (I concede that these data only show New Haven's 2001 crime rates, and it surely has been on the up and up!). The death of NE manufacturing in the early twentieth century severely hurt the New Haven economy, which had little else to fall back on-- unlike the much larger, more diverse port cities of Boston and New York-- and it is only now beginning to make a recovery. However, Yale has always sat fairly pretty, financially, as it's wealth and success were/are not inextricably tied to the local economy. With this in mind, many studies (e.g. http://www.mitpressjournals.org/doi/abs/10.1162/003465300559028?journalCode=rest) link poverty and fiscal inequality to high crime-rates, and New Haven appears to be no exception.

I do agree, though, that just like any city, you're apt to be just fine if you throw heed to some street smarts.🙂

That said, I (and I imagine the others, too) made the comparison in a tongue-in-cheek jest only because the two are so wildly dissimilar. Again, I mean this post in good reverence; I believe you make a good point. It was disrespectful, and no harm or coarseness was meant. I do feel that New Haven is on the up and up (not that income is the gauge by which to measure success, but 2000- 2008 saw an $11k increase in median income alone! http://www.city-data.com/city/New-Haven-Connecticut.html ), and I for one am very excited to move there and focus much of my research efforts on helping the local community-- I very much like the character of the city, the people I've met, and the surrounding environment.

Hooray for EHS!:highfive:

and1, the comparison to Kandahar was very clearly a joke!!!!!

werd, thanks for the detailed analysis on New Haven vs. the rest of the NE, very interesting! 🙂

So it looks like we need to have our doctors complete some medical forms before arriving, which you can find here:

http://yale.edu/uhs/students/newstudent_forms_grad.html

For those of us living on campus, we need a meningitis vaccine! Hm, those weren't even around when I went to college in the mid 90s...!!

Hey Werd,

Yes, I believe that is her. After her little speech, I kept thinking how awesome it would be to work with her in some capacity...I call dibs! 😛

I finished at YSPH (EMD) in 2001 and I still miss those lunch carts. 👍

As far as housing is concerned, live at one of the big complexes within walking distance, or take your car and live in East Rock or farther. Downtown and anything out on Whalley or Dixwell Avenues is not worth the stress and danger.

Hi everyone~ thanks so much for the great advices you have been giving! 🙂 Im an international student who didnt realize the housing application starts so early.. so i just submitted the application for Harkness today, but suddenly found they've started giving offer from April....😱 i wonder if there is any possibility at all for me to get a room there? or should istart off-campus searching directly?

Hey deerwinter; welcome to the YSPH '12 thread!

I think Yale tries to help international students out when it comes to dorm applications, but you're right: it is a bit late in the game. If you haven't heard anything back yet, I'd recommend starting the offcampus search. There're a lot of good links and some pretty good advice on this thread to get you started, and I'd also recommend the YSPH 2012 Listserve-- people seem to be having some luck there.

Hope that helps?

I'm in New Haven now for the summer, starting some research and trying to learn the lay of the land, so to speak. So far, I'm VERY pleased with East Rock-- the safety, community vibe, etc.

Hi everyone! I'll be starting my MPH in biostats this fall. I have a question to all the people who have already heard back from Harkness? When did you apply? I submitted my application around April 20th, but I haven't heard back from them yet. Is this a sign they're probably full?

I applied to Harkness on April 1st and was offered a spot around April 20th. Good luck!

I recently called Renee Robichaud and she said she is finishing with applicants from April 15th and by next week she will move onto April 16th applicants.

I also asked when would be the last possible date to hear back from Graduate Housing. She estimated housing would fill up by June 28/29 and would start notifying/helping applicants to look for other alternatives. Thinking back, I'm not sure if this applies specifically to Harkness or other Yale Apts/Dorms. But if you're keen on knowing it doesn't hurt to call the office yourself. They seem quite friendly!

Hey again everyone,

Has anyone moved to New Haven yet-- perhaps some AP MPHers? I'm interested to hear how you're taking to the city and your classes.

I've been down here for about a month doing some field research with EHS, and, well: life is good. The bars, the farmer's markets, the festivals, east rock bike rides, the restaurants, the 2nd year MPHers (and PhDers 😉). Absolutely splendid.
