Marian University (MU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Indy DEFINTIELY has a small town feel, because its actually a pretty small city! Downtown Indy is great, but once you leave the downtown area you hit a lot of suburbs and neighborhoods. If you're used to NYC, Indy will feel tiny haha!

Yea I'm sure it will seem small, but I typically enjoy new experiences as long as they don't take me wayyy too far from a city life. It appears Indy won't do that so I will be fine. That rural rotation during M4 will definitely be an interesting experience for me though. lol.

I think most of you will notice that Hoosiers are like the nicest people around. They'll stop and talk to you about anything, I highly suggest Colts games, Irish Fest, and the Indy 500 is alright if you're into that sort of thing!

Since MU-COMers are basically the Jedi of the medical galaxy...May the 4th be with all of you today ;)

Anyone get in off of the wait-list recently? MUCOM said on here that they would start pulling off the alternate list starting this past Thursday. Just wondering if anybody's gotten a call?

I want to say a good 5 or so people joined the Facebook group over the last few days. But who knows if that's any indication haha

Obi -Wan... you can't just up and change your avatar! I look at the avatars to see who posted, not the names. Now I have no idea who you are... ;)

Will Marian students be able to choose orthopedic surgery as a clerkship elective? I see St. Vincent is a signed hospital (with Methodist pending) and also an affiliate hospital of IU's Ortho residency program.

I would assume yes; you could do ortho surg during your 4th year electives.
MU-COM may be able to give you a solid answer.

Isn't MUCOM's focus on primary care? I'm wondering how they are planning to accomplish that? MUCOMs supposed to produce more primary care physicians in contrast to IUSM, which tends to produce specialists.

Ha! Had to throw on the hood since it is getting closer to go time.;)

IU creates a fair number of primary care physicians as well. Even though the statistic for those who choose PC is lower than the average DO school, you have to remember that IUSM is huge! I believe that if 30% of IUSM students go PC (which I think is around the current statistic), that is a greater number of students than if 50% from MU-COM go PC. From what I've heard, IUSM has really started pushing primary care as well. They have family medicine "propaganda" posters all over their main campus.

They also discussed this primary care focus at the MU-COM new student program back in March. In general, MU-COM's existence alone will aide in reducing the physician shortage because statistically there will be more PC physicians entering the pipeline. They made it clear that we will have the ability/choice/opportunities to specialize in whatever interests us. No specialty will be forced on us. The focus of training however will emphasize primary care. It is their belief that having a strong foundation in primary care creates a better physician, regardless of what they end up specializing in... Makes sense.

What y'all doing over the summer? Any stuff planned at MUCOM?

Pretty sure almost all DO schools focus on primary care. That doesn't mean they won't give us the opportunity to experience all the different aspects of medicine. That's what electives are for!

Does anyone know if Marian is going to allow current students to have some sort of role in the admissions process in the upcoming cycle and beyond? I assume interviewing students may have an opportunity to speak with some of us on interview days, but I'm referring to more of a formal role in the admissions process. I know some schools have student interviews so I was curious if MUCOM plans to implement anything like this. Or will it be strictly the MMI like it was for us?

That's a good question! I hope they do. I loved it when I had student interviewers at schools - I felt like it really helped me relax a little at least and peers have a different perspective than administration.

Yeah I really enjoyed having student interviewers also for the exact same reasons. Maybe MUCOM will chime in about it.

MU-COM does plan to include current students in our admissions process.

Current students who are trained can interview. Current students will also be involved in other aspects of the interview day.

In addition, there will be a 1st and 2nd year student (with non-voting rights) on the admissions committee. Finally, there will likely be an advisory group to the director of admissions--as well as current student ambassadors.

Wow that sounds great. Thanks for the response.

Does anyone know if we will have a winter break between first and second term and how long of a summer break we will have between 1st and 2nd year?

From looking at what they posted on the portal, it looks like our last class, of yr1 sem1 is Dec 20th and yr1 sem2 starts on Jan 6th. Im sure this could change, but I'd bet this is pretty close to what will happen.

*and for summer, again from the portal info...year one ends the week of may 18th-22nd and second year starts aug 11th 2014

The subject of the attendance expectations seemed to be a pretty hot topic a little while ago. Also, maybe some extra info about white coat ceremony (if its even available yet)--dress code for our guests, guest limit per student, the planned method for RSVPing for our guests, will MU-COM have hotel deals arranged for our guests similarly to what was offered during interviews/accepted student weekend......etc.

Really appreciate you reaching out to us for input on areas of interest! Thanks!

I'm not sure if this question had been answered already, but is the lab portion of the anatomy course done by full dissection or prosection?

I think I remember hearing that it will be full dissection.

Is there a lot we know about the iPad minis? Are books, apps, or notes going to be loaded on to them or anything? That's something that I'd be interested in learning more about :)

Hey Meowser...

So, if you're not familiar with iPads in general, you can go here and read up on the general features and workings of it all.

But, as far as what we'll have at MU-COM, from what I remember hearing, they are thinking about pre-loading text books on there. Also, it sounded like we'll use them for anatomy as well, so maybe our dissection guides will be on them too?

Im not sure if they would add any other apps or anything, but adding notes to it is pretty easy. the iWork apps are apples version of Office (like word, ppt, excel) and you can import notes from office to those apps. There are also plenty of other free or cheap apps for PDF annotation and storage.

They also mentioned thinking about doing the full sized iPad instead of the mini. If that means the retina display then I am all for that! I love the mini, but for school use, you cant beat the retina display full sized iPad (imo).

Anyway, mayby MUCOM will give some more info soon on this, I hope!

Bummed our names won't be embroidered on the white coats. Also the current IOA "pediatrics" logo design...obviously the IOA felt it needed an updating as well since they are apparently redesigning it. Cool for the next class at least.

Oh well.

First of all: meowser. LOL. Second of all: I actually do have an iPad! That and my iPhone are attached to my hip hahaha. But yeah all I remember is it being used for anatomy but I didn't really know why. And I was just interested in knowing specifics :) I didn't know about all those office type apps though so those will definitely come in handy, thanks sir!

Haha, good...yeah me too. Hope we get some updates on it soon!

And I was hoping for embroidered names too...I know myself. I'm going to loose a name tag at least 10 times or more! Doh

Agreed. Can't imagine it'd cost that much more to embroider?

Awesome! Thanks for taking our input into consideration!!

Would love to have more info on this, as well. :)

Would also love some info on what we should be purchasing at this point. I know many students have already bought stethoscopes. For those of us who haven't, do you have recommendations on stethoscopes, BP cuffs (if needed), OMM tables (if you're interested in purchasing one), etc etc? Does MUCOM provide us with any discounts (I know some schools do this)? Also, not sure if textbooks (either electronic or physical copies) will be provided. If not, can we get the names to start purchasing those ahead of time? It'd be nice to spread the spending out over the next few months rather than purchasing a lot of expensive items in the first week.
*I feel so unprepared

Just wanted to let all the waitlisters know that I just gave up my seat... I hope this brings much joy to the next one on the list... Cheers and great year to all.

Oh cool, I didn't see this until now. This might be too late, but some topics I wouldn't mind hearing about:

-a picture update on our building!
-any new hires/curriculum updates (if any)
-any thoughts on using full sized, retina display iPad?
-tentative schedule of orientation (just to see what will be going on)
-Thoughts on purchasing equipment (stethoscope requirements if any, etc...)

At this point, you guys have shared so much that this is just the fun stuff to hear. So, thanks again for all the info!

So excited for August!
