NYCOM Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
We heard that too. This is what I heard from reliable sources: NYCOM and Touro had signed a non-competition agreement for 5 years which runs out next year. We hired one of your old clinical deans (Steier, not sure if he was an assistant or a full dean) to be our clinical dean. TUMEC (touro university MEC. Which is CA and NV, not NY) wants to pull out of its eastern holdings and hand them over to TouroNY but we dont have a true consortium yet (we do have a NJ one, but as its run by one dude and hes only NJ, it wont apply to the various NY holdings).

and then I heard a solution being thrown out there is to let the NJ Consortium be a subset of a shared clinical site network that would be NYCOM sites, our NJ sites and our couple of sites Touro CA/NV is trying to formally pass on to us. I figure the assumption here is touro wants to move east into LI and NYCOM wants to move west into NJ. Given that the NJ sites are supposed to be opening up a crapton of residencies within their little nucleus, it makes sense for both schools to try to do this. NYCOM could use more sites with residencies under their purview (I think any school could, for that matter) and Touro needs diversity of sites. Cooperation sounds cool to me.

Having more rotation sites in NJ would not be bad.
More sites to choose from means more opportunity for NYCOM students to expand and showcase their knowledge base.

NYITCOM is better, IMHO, then NYIT NYCOM. The latter is too long, the former is succinct and actually sounds cooler. But really, who cares. What matters is the experience and the board scores that will secure a student an amazing residency.

Touro will have a tough time moving into East LI, as NYCOM and Stony Brook already have a strong home base there. But who knows. Honestly, it doesn't matter. All medical schools are slowly increasing their enrollment, so if NYCOM expands into NJ that could only be a win-win for the school.

I believe its somewhat of a "take 5 less NYIT students at x LI site, open 5 spots in y jersey site for them. Take 5 less Touro students at y jersey site, fill the vacant 5 spots in x LI spot"

Its not hard to integrate students into already extant programs if the supposed integration of the consortiums is actually happening. It a different matter if they wanted to move into new hospitals neither school has relationships with.

Ah, I see. Well said sir. That sounds really great, then. Hope it happens!

happy new year guys. I was wondering you anyone can help me with the type of interview questions they asked? Also is it a closed-file interview? I have my interview soon. Would really appreciate thanks.

Hey guys. I have my interview late January. I heard that its going to be a closed-file interview. Is that right? What kind of questions did you guys face (like more research based or academic or personal)? Also, I know D.O's care a lot about the health care system, did you guys find any questions on it? Would appreciate your answers.

Congrats on getting interviews!! My interview was an afternoon one, so I had to be there before 11am. The day started off with talking to admissions, financial aid, a faculty member, a tour of the campus given by Y1 and Y2 students, and lastly the interview. The interview was ridiculously relaxed. The interviewer reads your application a few minutes before they call you in. SUPER RELAXED. They pretty much went through everything on my application and wanted me to talk about it. They ask familiar questions that you would expect. The one that I thought was interesting was, "If you were going to explain to a lay person (like your mother or grandparents) how would you explain what a DO physician does?"

Hope this helps! Good luck!

I will be most likely attending NYCOM in August but I am having trouble finding apartments (studio/ 1 bedroom) near the campus. I am hoping to move in around May so it gives me time to settle in, get furniture, and become familiar with the area. I used some sites off of google but it just gave me a massive headache.

Help? :) Thanks!

Hello everyone!

I was complete by beginning of October and haven’t heard a peep from NYCOM  Is that a bad sign? I tried calling yesterday but no one picked up, I guess they’re on vacation. Does any one happen to know how long NYCOM will be interviewing? All I know is that seem to be a much later schedule that most schools judging by last years thread, so I suppose not hearing back cant be that bad but it still makes me really nervous!

That void at the bottom of my stomach seems to progressively get bigger each day … not even food can fill it at this point :scared:

Thanks and Happy Holidays to everyone :)

They started interviewing in November, so they are on a later schedule. Not hearing back drives everyone crazy. The best thing to do is give them a call and see if you can do anything to help your application or just see what's going on with your stuff.

Have hope!!!!!

Thank you for your response, I really appreciate it! Hope your application cycle is going well :)

Update on my previous post on the NYCOM - TouroCOM rotation site merger.

Just started a new rotation today and was talking to a sudent who normally rotates at a different site than myself. She says she was told by the clinical dean <2 weeks ago that this is for sure happening (barring a unforseen complication. which is a normal caveat).

The fact-influenced speculation is that while touro is entering into NYCOMEC it may or may not change the name of our current New Jersey Regional consortium (NJRMEC). It will be under the bigger nycomec banner, but it may keep its name since we did do the paperwork to formalize that consortiums identity as that. While NYCOM is likely to modify the NYCOMEC name to better reflect the NY-centrism rather than NYCOM-centrism. But all this naming stuff is insignificant in the face of a formal confirmation that this appears to be happening.

Cool. I'll post something if I hear anything from my end!

This can only be a good thing to be honest... I'd rather have an option to do rotations in NJ then upstate NY lol.

anybody heard anything back acknowledging the receipt of their deposit check?

No, not yet. I've been calling Financial Aid every day this week to confirm and I can't even get through.

Thanks for the reply. Nice to know its relaxing because I tend to get nervous. I have my interview in afternoon also. Hope I get in with you guys.

*** The admission office said that they will keep giving interview till March. So, don't lose your hope!!

I called (516) 686-3997 this morning and found out they did receive my deposit. She also said I would be receiving a letter in the mail with more information.

Anyone else interviewing the morning of the 31st? Also, I am really nervous -- any tips on preparation?!:xf:

For anyone who already had their interview, where did you park?

Newcomer to the thread. I'll be interviewing morning of the 31st as well. I'd recommend knowing your application/supplemental/additional letters inside and out. And have a pretty good understanding of why D.O. and why NYCOM. Obviously nothing groundbreaking in the advice, but you may want to practice in a mock interview how you would answer those questions and any tangential aspects of your individual application you can incorporate into your answers.

When I interviewed, I drove past/through the NYIT campus towards the medical school...there's a huge parking lot right in front of the main buildings. If you're not from around the area, I suggest visiting prior to your interview to get acquainted with the traffic/travel time.

Well I'm staying with a friend who lives right down the street and knows the area well, but I wasn't sure if we would get a visitors pass to park in that lot?

Has anyone who interviewed before the break gotten their result back since the new year?

ahhh. I finally got a formal response on the matter. The merging will be for residency only matters. Which basically means the residency programs in NYCOMs current purview and Touro's residencies out in our hospitals would be under one umbrella where both Touro and NYCOM get to share in the output of the residents (research wise).

What does this *actually* mean? No formal sharing of the cores. Very easy access to any electives at these sites. Easier access to residency at these sites as they will technically be "home hospitals" for both schools even if the core rotation options dont reflect that.

does anyone know the % accepted post interview? I'm seeing a multitude of different percentages... I'm interviewing Feb 2 and was wondering if this was interviewing for the waitlist or gives me less of a chance of acceptance. Thanks.

Does anyone know how many seats are left in the 2012 class? Is it too late to apply for this cycle?

Has anyone who interviewed before the break gotten their result back since the new year?

Ya i still havnt heard back from before the new years either. I called them yesterday and they said that the commitee still has not gotten together since before the holidays... :(

thats funny...cuz I got an interview invite from them last week, and then a call saying I can move UP my interview to a earlier date

Wonderful news.

NYCOM is getting a new dean (one that will propel the medical school to new heights).
I just spoke with someone here at school and hear that there have been positive internal discussions between Stony Brook, Hofstra, and NYCOM's senior administration for a long time now on demonstrating the power of Long Island's medical eduation...and NYCOM's current dean simply wasn't making the cut..a new search is now being done for a Dean with extensive clinical research experience, and a true leader in the both the MD and DO worlds. The idea is to attract top quality medical students to all three of Long Island's medical schools... to create a "Long Island Med" consortium of sorts, echoing the ideas of Stony Brook's new leadership at their medical school, and Hofstra's research power-house.

This is great news for NYCOM's future.

Here is the Dean's email to us, telling us he's stepping down:

"Dear Students, I’m writing to share an announcement with you that I recently shared with the deans, department chairpersons, and class leaders. After much soul searching over the past year and many discussions with my family and the senior leadership of the university, I have decided to return to my first love and leave the dean’s office and return to the faculty at the end of the academic year. As I have shared with some of you over the last five and a half years, it has been difficult to leave the patient care, teaching, and scholarly activities that constitute the responsibilities of an academic physician. And at the end of the day, being a sports medicine specialist in an academic setting is who I really am, and what I was trained to do. President Guiliano has long encouraged me and again given me an opportunity to establish and lead a new department of sports medicine and performance sciences. This was a dream of mine when I joined the faculty in 1988, and now I have the opportunity to make it happen. Having the opportunity to return to the faculty and make an impact on patients, students, sports medicine fellows, and colleagues in the context of a new venture such as this is truly exciting, and one that I look forward to leading. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for the many successes that we’ve shared during my tenure as dean, and I look forward to a few more in this academic year. We have much of which to be proud. Our collective efforts have resulted in successful educational outcomes, and we have created a working and learning environment that is collaborative, highly productive, and conducive to even greater successes in the future. My best regards always, Thomas A. Scandalis, D.O., FAOASM
Dean
New York College of Osteopathic Medicine
of New York Institute of Technology
Old Westbury, New York 11568-8000"

Then again, could a man with the last name Scandalis ever be trusted?

Latest filing date of supplemental application is listed as 3/15 so technically it is not too late to apply. Having said that, they fill their class by March and interview dates are scheduled several weeks in advance. Obviously there is waitlist movement during subsequent months but if you're seriously interested in applying, you'll need to do so as soon as possible.

So for those that interviewed, did you find the questions to be different from the "Interview Feedback" questions? Or similar?

Thanks! Interviewing January 17th afternoon session

hey guys, I just receieved my acceptance letter. My interview was NOV 8, more than tw month ago, and I honestly lost all hope in NYCOM.

I just want to hear something from NYCOM whether it be an interview invite or a rejection. The wait is killing me.

just fyi NYCOM sends silent rejections :( so either we will here something good or nothing at all. sucks! but just letting you know if you didn't already.

Guys, is it possible to reschedule your interview here? It is this coming week and I was planning on attending it until today (some personal circumstances). I am worried that it is too late to reschedule at this point. Thoughts?

I think schools typically like at least 48 hours notice

I was complete 10/1, mcat 34R, 3.9 gpa. haven't heard anything from nycom. anyone else in a similar situation?

should i give them a call?

I've been complete since the end of Sept./early Oct. w/ a 3.2 and a 32Q and haven't heard a peep. I'm going to give them a call next week. Couldn't hurt!

I rescheduled mine and got in. As long as you don't push it off too long, it won't affect your odds.

Hey, current First Year here. A lot of housing posting from second and first years starts in late April and May. My lease didn't start until August and I believe that is similar to most others. There are some nice apartment complexes in town of Glen Cove (10 mins from campus)... Hope it helps. Having more questions feel free to ask.

Awesome. Will they be posting on the forum or Facebook? Thanks :)

They should be posting on both, but a majority of it will be be on your class's Facebook page. Most of the postings will be for houses that they are moving out of (either single apartment or group). If you are looking for a single apartment, you may have to find that on your own.

BTW: Here is the link to the 2016 FB page if anyone is interested. http://www.facebook.com/groups/170293103071436/

The 2015 is a very helpful resource to my class. We actually have 2 pages. One for general statements and questions concerning events, lectures, DPR, and ICC. The other, is a Test Page where we create questions for the class to practice on for upcoming tests and quizzes.
