What are the best programs in New York City? Does anyone know much about the Columbia U program?

Well.... Just because it isn't frequently done, doesn't mean it is impossible. Yes, there's a good chance I may choose one or the other, but there's also a chance that I may want to practice as a rheumatologist 50% and an intensivist 50%.

Historically the two strong rheum programs in NYC are HJD and HSS. That said, I'm sure Columbia and MSSM have good programs as well.

Anyone who is applying only to CA Programs? If so did all the programs downloaded the application?

The interview I attended was very laid back, usual qs like why this area, this program, why this speciality, interests, where do you see yourself in 10 years etc etc, no technical qs in my interview. The whole interview is based on your CV ( common sense) so know whats on your CV well. I think it would be helpful for all if ppl posted their interview experience .

Thanks

Thanks! yea thats what i'm hoping myself. Just concerned about panel interviews?

I tried looking around past Rheum threads and Scutwork.com for interview experiences but didnt have much luck.. any others to do my research??

I didn't find much either. Just a description of few of the programs but nothing on interview experiences.

Also, how many interviews is everybody attending?

Most rheumatologists are relatively laid back (most of them chose not to be cardiologists or intensivists for a reason), and accordingly the interviews tend to be laid back. You should be able to describe your own experiences as laid out in your application, but otherwise the point of the interview is for you to find out about the program and see if it seems like a good fit.

At least at my own institution, we wouldn't be inviting you for an interview in the first place if we didn't think you could do the job based on your application.

No more activity in this forum? Any more interviews guys? Anyone heard from university of Maryland or Albert Einstein Philly?
This week has been so quiet
Please share interview experiences too

Thanks

Has one IV so far, pretty laid-back, talking about career goal and your cv then just chit-chatting

I would say that the majority of interviews are laid back but if you interview at some high powered places, they can be a little more intense. One interviewer wanted me to list five rheumatological cases I'd seen and tell him about them in detail (even labs (!) etc). Luckily, I'd just gotten off of a rheum rotation. I think it would be good to have a few prepared to talk about. It would actually help with other interviews to talk about a few cases you found interesting. I had one interviewer start telling me about research and tell him how I would design the project differently. I think these interviews are definitely not the norm though. Mostly, it was just to know your CV well, be able to talk about research you've done, why you chose rheumatology, where you see yourself (academic, private practice, etc). Also, for those thinking about private practice, I was surprised that many of those in academics were open to training those that wanted to go in to private practice as that was the career goal of many fellows.

is there anything in particular we should take on interviews?? starting the interview trail this week and it's a been a while since residency interviews. i remember taking a copy of my eras application, PS, etc. thoughts?

I would say that the majority of interviews are laid back but if you interview at some high powered places, they can be a little more intense.

While this is true, the important point to draw from it is that if you don't like the intense interview environment, you probably won't like the intense training environment. No one is trying to trick you; what you see is probably what you are going to get, so make sure it meets your needs and expectations. It's a cliche, but its true that "you're interviewing them" as much as they're interviewing you.

Agree completely, I did not end up there :)

Critical care and Rheum are like drinking coffee with salt! They do not mix!

Hi everyone, has anyone heard about UCLA yet? Either invite or rejection?

Critical care and Rheum are like drinking coffee with salt! They do not mix!

Truth.

Not to harp on this, but one of the many reasons not to do both is that rheumatology is essentially an entirely outpatient specialty requiring frequent follow-up. The reimbursement model is set up to reflect this (ie you make more money billing level 4 office visits all day than going to the hospital). Critical care is basically the opposite. So either your critical care practice or your rheumatology practice would suffer. Practically speaking, it just would not be smart to do both.
