Official 2014-2015 GI Fellowship Application Cycle

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have the same issue. They should offer at least one other date since the invite came late.

Can anyone share their interview experience at Mayo Clinic/Jacksonville? Thank you!

Hi all,
I have applied for GI fellowship this year. Got 4 IVs and I have a very good chance of matching in my home program (>95%) which is a University affiliated Comm. program, most fellows go for private practice.
However, I have some concerns about pursuing GI fellowship. May be those with more experience can throw some light.
Recently, I spoke to one of GI fellows and he told me that it's difficult to get GI jobs after fellowship because of cost cutting and Obama care. So if anyone is looking to stay in sort after places in CA like LA, San Diego, SF etc then they should reconsider pursuing fellowship as Primary care/hospitalist jobs will be more easily available than GI jobs. Also, 3-4 years from now, things will be tougher as it will be difficult for a private GI doc to sustain himself/herself by private practice alone.
Is that true? Guys, as much as I like GI, I do not want to go out of job after fellowship. This is really confusing. Help!!

I am sorry, I have no intention of hurting anyone. Really looking for answers. Which thread should I post this question? Thanks

I think drexel is not interested in recruiting fellows this year

I believe the question is whether u need visa to work after fellowship. if u need visa, forget california. its near impossible unless you have good research cv and places like stanford, ucsf ll take you. jobs elsewhere in the country are still available.

Thanks a lot for reply. I will need visa after fellowship :( What about private groups in CA?

Is it a 3 day interview session or they have one interview session each day?
no no, AM or PM of 10/6, 10/7, 10/8 or 10/ 26, 10/27, 10/28; it would be horrible if it was a 3 day interview session, one day for interviews, one day for tour, one day for questions

Ok that's better. I was just curious. Thanks.

hey all, some of these fellowship interview specify that they only give 15 vacation days off to their fellows. Does that mean it's 15 weekdays, not counting the weekends? (aka it's really 3 full weeks off) . Please help clarify.

It's really 3 weeks off. Also I have to say you have the best screen name on the GI forum by far. Every time I see it, it makes me smile and laugh.

i believe let's get the fellowship first then we can think about weeks off.

anyone interview at the Phoenix VA yet? Would you be able to share your experience?

any interview from Uni of Buffalo? not on the list!!

and how about Memorial Sloan Kettering or LSU?

I think the banner Good Samaritan /phoenix va program is a strong clinical program. They scope a lot ( about 1500) procedures and people really enjoy working at both places. I think it would be a really fun place to train where people are really laid back and don't take themselves too seriously. The program director dr young is great and the rest of the faculty are very supportive and friendly.
I think it's a shame that the va system has brought some contraversy because I don't think it has any impact on the program itself and its just a government administration issue.

Georgetown Rejection

anyone know the time/location of Houston Methodist interview? did not get info from program yet!

anyone hear about winthrop?

yeah, i know, i called them today. thanks. looks like i'll be rolling the dice with 6. thankful to have them, hoping for the best.

Best of luck to all with interviews, and to those who were less fortunate this time 'round, if this is truly what you wish to do, regroup, keep plugging away at it, and hit it harder next year. This is the approach I'll take if I don't match.

As a fellow GI applicant at my program says, "Hey, at the end of the day, even if we don't match, we're still doctors."

Things have gotten a bit quiet here. Anyone have any positive or negative interview impressions Hope people are doing well

Here are a couple in addition to the banner good samaritan one I posted earlier:
-University of Chicago-Northshore- very young program, only have 3 fellows all time, takes 1 fellow per year, growing, very supportive and amazing faculty, primarily clinically oriented, rotate at Evanston Hospital for 14 months, Univ of Chicago for 8 months and 3 other hospitals in northern chicago suburbs; VERY LARGE IBD population that supersedes most other programs; huge amount of endoscopies (1500 procedures in total), little to no call whatsoever, very relaxed atmosphere; seems like a very great program and will continue to get better; not a whole not of research; interviews 20-24 for 1 spot and primarily locoregional; fellows live in downtown chicago and commute 30 min via subway to main hospital
-Mayo Clinic Scottsdale- underrated program; fellows have amazing post fellowship opportunities and match at Mayo Rochester for advanced fellowships; superb faculty with as much research as you can get your hands on; rotate in china and mayo rochester for electives, rotate at banner good sam for more procedures; lots of clinical exposure; takes 2 fellows now and will take 3 this or next year with built in transplant fellowship in 3 yrs; seems like lots of tough call, lots of consultations for complicated patients; I really enjoyed meeting with the faculty; location leaves a little to be desired but if you love the heat, its perfect; I think its a fantastic place to train

Others please pitch in

I have 7 interviews - not sure what my chances are with this number - hoping for more.
Applied to a lot of programs but haven't heard back from like 75% of them.
Anyone in a similar situation? Seems like most invites have probably gone out by now, correct?

I haven't heard from like 60 programs. I think they are waiting for people to cancel

IV Impressions so far:
U of Rochester: 800 bed hospital. great staff. 4 advanced guys, 4 hepatologists, dedicated IBD specialists. Very intense first year where you cover a small service of 5-6 pts and are on conults. Call is q 9 days so you cover the same all three years. 2nd year is liver and research heavy and 3rd year you make it as you want. 1st yr 4 months on consult and then 2 weeks on endoscopy (You do endoscopy while on consults as well if not busy with consults). Highest MELD score transplants in the state with about 30-35 transplants per year. They have a live animal lab once a month where you practice advanced therapeutics on pigs. I was really impressed with the program. Large IBD population. Techs on call at night so your dont have to make the cart yourself. You interview with 6 people. You scope from day one. You scope everyone including the private patients. Additionally you scope at their endoscopy suite as well.

Cooper: endoscopy heavy. Can get ERCP certified in 3 years easily. Interview with 3 attendings, a fellow, and the PD. Great attendings and a fairly large group. 1st year is primarily consults. You rotate at another hospital for liver (Lourdes) and consults. You rotate at a 3rd smaller hospital in the other years which apparently is a real relaxed service where you do all the consults and all the procedures. Nice mix of really sick urban patients and affluent suburban population. The fellows all live in Philly and commute 10 minutes to Camden. No primary service-pure consults.

Einstein-Philly: Heavy in esophageal disease. The fellows seem happy. They now have a ACGME PGY7 transplant hepatology fellowship. Their main transplant hepatologist is amazing and really revitalized the program. They do the second most transplants in the Philly ( and I think more than UPMC as well, so it may be 2nd most in state, second to Penn). IV with the chief, PD, CEO of the group and then another attending. No primary service-pure consults. Plenty of scopes to go around. The fellows live all over i.e. suburbs and the city.

I really liked all of these places and still have more to come.

Is this Drexel wait-list real or was it just another way of rejecting? Per the email, apparently its a "very small wait list".

I got the same message. Seems like it was a rejection.

same here, it is just rejection, not cool Drexel

I cancelled my Drexel interview so hopefully one of you will become unwaitlisted.. I don't think I can go to more than 11, 17 interview invites and cancelled 6
