Official 2015-2016 Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Application Cycle

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

So I presume, that's a yes to both parts of the question? But it does look like the interviews are being sent out in waves. And totally random. lol. Just chill out guys, as gutonc likes to say

Quick q: does it convey less interest to take a later interview? Or is it irrelevant? Like is taking a late October interview gonna hurt my chances?

Irrelevant. You're a PGY2 resident (most likely). Your schedule has been set since last March or April. Everybody understands that. Interview when you can.

University of Wisconsin today... no reply email address in the invite though, which I thought was weird. I won't repeat the list since it is already on there, but they are obviously still sending out invites!

Wisconsin today. Lots of second wave interviews going on this year. Don't be discouraged if you see a program on the list that you really wanted to hear from.

:( none of these waves has touched my shores...feeling down about it. lets hope something good happens soon.

same here. Is there any IMG on H1 visa who applied to J1 programs as well. I applied to almost all programs available, but looks like everyone is hesitant to consider me because of my visa status? How many interviews did everyone get.. I got 6 so far. I believe I have a decent profile and was expecting more by now.

I also think ranking 10 programs is minimum to guarantee a match for IMG's

You're definitely not alone, we all get down at points with this process. Remember, there are >70 programs who have yet to send anything out yet. For programs that have, there are many waves. You're still being considered for the next wave (unless some select programs reject you). Also, interviews go out at least until early to mid September.

I find it hard to believe that UWisc only got just more than 275 applications this year.

What's the etiquette on interview confirmations? How long does one wait for them to confirm an interview date before emailing again?

Which one did you get DrMikeScott? Congrats!

Usually you would wait for at least 2-3 days. After that, o would call the PC.

I guess you could follow up after 2 days... A little earlier is fine too. Don't think much. If you do, you may loose your preferred date..

Thank you! UWisc* and Baylor (Houston)* - it's been 4 days so I guess I'll call today.

Dude, you're killing it. Keep it up!

Really? I'm an AMG (from a good medical school, but couples matched into a community IM residency), and I am super scared about matching going on 13 interviews. If you think 10 is a safe number for IMGs, am I being ridiculous worrying about matching going on 13? I really don't have anybody in my program to get this type of information from, so any feedback would be truly invaluable and appreciated.

13 is a lot --- I personally think it is reasonable, not so much to assure matching but because you might be underwhelmed by some programs and want options. The problem is scheduling these and the fatigue that goes with residency. I made it to like 10 and then the wheels came off - hard to schedule more, travel was tiring and I just couldn't do more.

Thank you so much for your response. I went to medical school to become a hematologist oncologist, it's what I've always wanted to do. The idea of not matching (a resident from our program interviewed at 8 and didn't match last year) propels me into scheduling as many as I am able to get days off for. If I felt like I could shave back the list and not worry about lowering my chances of matching, I'd do it in a heartbeat - if for no other reason than to free up a spot for some of the extremely bright and talented IMGs struggling to get interviews. I may have a chance to schedule up to 15. Would you think this excessive, from an "interviewing at enough programs to feel very safe matching somewhere"-perspective?

Thanks so much again for your response. I sincerely wish the very best of luck to every person hoping to match into heme onc this year.

15 would get you in somewhere, but it will be very tough to do. You can try taking a block off, and doing a bunch of interviews close together, but the problem is by interview 4 or 5, your brain turns to silly putty. The interviewers are nicer and more enthusiastic then residency application and there isn't any drama. It's just that you get drained quicker because of the baseline fatigue of residency. A workable strategy would be to stagger your preferred ones like once every three weeks in the beginning, possibly with a few back to backs, and then schedule a whole bunch close together at the end. Others might have a better idea, but don't do something like two weeks off, and interview at 10 during this time.

You might think "what does it matter that my brain might turn to mush by interview #5 in a work week?"

The reason is not the need to impress at the interview, but you have to evaluate the program. In Hem Onc, the difference in quality/scope/mission of the training programs is huge. It makes the differences (which are real) between IM programs look non existent. You really need to be at 100% mentally to process all this, pay attention to the details, etc.

Got it. You're so right, I've noticed the major differences in approaches, relative strengths and scheduling across heme-onc programs just from looking over their websites.

I guess then the question becomes, if I am going to cut from my list, do I cut my 2 "safeties" (which are eons below the others on the list in terms of quality), or do I keep those and cut out 2 places I think I'd probably be happy at?

Thank you so much!!

Keep the safeties, certainly if they don't require travel. And rank them.

Here we go~~
Hi, do you know when i should expect getting more interview for H/O fellowship, i've heard H/O people are lazy and usually they will start sending the invitation in Sep, and most of the traveling for the interviews would be Oct, Nov, is that right?
