Both schools had great programs. For me, I felt a lot safer in NYC than Baltimore.

go to Maryland....... there are almost a million people living in Baltimore.... you're gonna be safe.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

I interviewed at Maryland but I didn't apply to nyu. However, I know a lot about nyu dental school because I used to have a roommate that went there when I lived in NYC for a short period of time.

If you are a female I would say that is a huge point to consider and I couldn't agree with you more.

I'm happy for you! Good job getting in!

I'm a male, and I'm from Los Angeles- so, I don't mind a dangerous area at all if It can save me some money.

The trick is to walk fast like you are in a hurry when in bad areas, be alert, pay attention, and whatever you do don't walk around with your cellphone out and your head down. You're asking for trouble when you do that.

I'm a strong believer of going to the cheapest school, choose Maryland and avoid schools that are 500K like NYU, MWU, and USC at all costs

Not safer for your wallet or future in the long run. I don't mean to be rude and the choice is yours in the end, I can't decide for you but with that price difference I would really, really reconsider that. Please don't let the perceived safety threat of attending Maryland cost you tens of thousands (possibly over $100,000) dollars. I'm sure the school has some sort of escort/security service to walk you back from the library late at night. If you're smart and don't travel alone at night I'm sure that you will be fine. I would bother to write this post unless I really wanted you to think long and hard about this. It's no skin off my back if you end up spending all that extra money, but it just concerns me and I'm trying to look out for a future peer.

Good luck in dental school wherever you decide to enroll.

I hope you already looked into this, but doing some very quick, loose math without considering health insurance or living expenses at all, as well as ignoring tuition increases that will inevitably happen, the four year billed total at NYU is 320K (again, this does not include the drastically higher cost of living compared to Maryland), OOS Maryland 288K, IS Maryland 180K.

I'm sure I missed nickels and dimes here and there because I was rounding but the moral of the story is that without taking into account the cost of living discrepancy which is HUGE you'll be $32K pre-interest behind as an OOS student. I haven't really looked into cost of living that much and I know some schools overshoot their budgets, but NYU looks like it'll be $30K per year even if you go at least $4k per year under what they tell you to budget for. I cannot imagine Baltimore being $20K per year (I think this is too high for that area), but assuming it is you're $72K pre-interest in the hole by attending NYU over OOS Maryland. After interest, by the time you're done paying this back, I wouldn't be surprised if this is a $120,000 dollar decision, i.e. a 20% down payment on a $600,000 home...

Please don't tell me you're a Maryland resident because I literally might have a stroke sitting here at this desk.

I agree with you, I think it would save you 200k after accounting for the in-school interest that accrues and the instate tuition you could gain at Maryland.

Saving this money would have a huge impact on your living situation and life after graduating.

But, we never knew, maybe the poster doesn't even need to borrow loans lol

Why don't we let adults make their own decisions. He or she probably thought it over carefully, considering the costs, and I doubt the opinions of randos would sway him or her.

^for the record, Maryland does have campus security to walk you home at night. They make this very clear at the interview, so she likely knew that already.

Maybe whoever this is has a spouse that makes 6 figures... then tuition may be less of a concern?

If there as a magically tree with a half million dollars on it, or they earned a military scholarship, then I agree and it's a totally different ballgame. I hope for their sake that's the case. I forgot about gaining instate tuition at Maryland. If they were able to pull that off you're right, the OOS price is even more of a bargain than it already is compared to NYU. I just can't fathom trading four years, the vast majority of which will be spent indoors, for a lifetime of financial consequences.

Thank you everyone for looking out for me. I have carefully considered both schools. I'm very fortunate to not have to take out loans in either situation. I think my decision would be different if I was graduating in debt

I agree go to the cheaper school, but a lifetime of financial consequences may be a little overboard. My best friend was over 500k in debt when she finished and after practicing 1 year as an endodontist she's on pace to pay it off in 3 years..

That is quite impressive. They must have a good deal of financial discipline/good deal of job hunting acuity in order to be able to pull this off. Who knows, maybe they're eating nothing but lentils, peanut butter and yogurt ;). I digress. This will be my last post so I don't piss off the people still watching this thread for interviews/acceptances. Good luck at Michigan (if I recall correctly) next year, I absolutely loved it when I interviewed. @pre-dent116 good luck at NYU, I hope you can make it to the Bronx when the 2016 AL East Champ Red Sox will be in town!
Haha no peanut butter just making over 700k in her first year! Practice in Michigan folks

Have you gotten accepted anywhere yet?

I got into Indiana this past Tuesday. Waiting to hear back from Maryland and USC. Waitlisted at Detroit Mercy and Roseman, but really don't care to hear back from them at this point bc I would go with Indiana over those two.

Where are you deciding?

I am going to take a wild guess and say... NYU.

Right on the monayyyyy. The 5k deposit monayyyy...
._.
But yes, NYU. But would take UCSF in a heartbeat if taken off waitlist, although highly unlikely given my number.

$5,000 deposit?!

Does UCSF provide its applicants with their waitlist number?
