LMU-DCOM (DeBusk COM) Discussion thread Part 2 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
At our lunch with the Dean last week, I asked how the stats for the upcoming years class were looking and he said that we had over 2600 applications so far this year and that we had more applications than any other school for the first couple of months of the application season. Also, he said that the gpa and mcat scores for the upcoming year were probably going to be slightly higher because of the larger applicant pool. Hopefully this trend keeps up for the next couple of years....He also said that he had spoken with the dean from UT med school and that a couple of students that had been accepted to both UT and DCOM had chosen to come to DCOM and that they were supprised that we were having an influence on their applicant pool... Just some tid bits to chat about...

awesome....I think what makes most interviewees like DCOM is that the faculty actually truly care about the school's success. They are not there just to do a job, but actually start the most prestigious medical school possible and they believe in it 100%----and their belief in the school gets very contagious during the interview.....almost as if there's a higher baseline energy level than other DO schools

what were the average gpa and mcat for the current years class?

I'm working in Augusta, GA this week so I missed out on some of the conversations...so to catch up:

Yes, it was me that never received a call. I got my letter the day everyone got their calls, but I did not find out until late in the day because I was on travel (again) (I almost had a heart attack thinking that I did not get in when people started posting they had received their calls and I had heard nothing).

That was a cute baby...I hope my wife doesn't see the pic and start giving me the..."see, it's easy to have a baby while in medical school 😉 "

so..when do you guys/gals think we'll start getting our lmu email addresses?

So, I know I'm not accepted yet, but I am pretending, so I was thinking about student groups

I think we definitely need a dodge ball team, a running team (that can go race at all the races around the region- there are a ton of them) and an acapella group

We kinda have some stuff like that going on! I'm doing some triathlons in the spring with a group of other students.. On the same day as my first tri, there is a whole other group going to run the Music City Marathon/ Half Mary. Also there are about 15 of us going to do an adventure race through the Wilderness Medicine Club coming up in the beginning of March. The adventure race is called Medwar. Not only do you do the standard hike/canoe/bike type stuff, but you also work through simulated outdoor emergency situations. We are competing against other med students, residents, and interns. I really can't wait for that one!

... but we should definitely add the Dodgeball!😀

I've always wanted to do one of those adventure races! oh I"m so jealous! That is great to know that there are alot of fellow runners/tri-ers there, that will be good for my training. Good luck on your tri, which one are you doing?

I'm doing the Scenic City Triathlon. Its a sprint distance in Chattanooga. That's the one that is on the same day as the Music City Marathon. I'm brand spanking new at this stuff, and started doing it to get in shape.. I have a ways to go until I would ever be competitive, but it sure is a lot of fun on the way! Maybe next year when you guys get here we can start a real tri/running club and come up with a logo and get team jerseys to compete in. Fun times!😎

oh we totally have to!!! Once you start racing you can't stop, its really addictive! I've heard that is a good one and sprint distances are fun. I've done music city before, it can be a good race depending on the weather, sometimes that is a really mucky time in Nash-vegas

Oh my gosh I"m getting so excited I'm hyperventilating! I can't wait tell I get my MCAT scores back....this is going to be a long painful month

One thing I'm excited about.. we get to learn how to give people shots today and then practice on each other... Mwah hah haa... As Dr. Wieting says.. Real Doctor Stuff (RDS). 🙂

thanks...but I meant when do the new students get their login information such as password and so forth?...and when do they actually register us in their system? Thanks

It's probably the same answer . . . first day of orientation. 😀

How/when will you learn how to draw blood?

I'm not sure.. But next week we get to learn how to suture! ..again with the Mwah hah haa!!! Thankfully not on each other, though!

How exciting!!!!! I can't wait to do real doctor stuff!! I hope your partner is a natural at giving injections! 😱😉

You'll have to let me know when the drawing blood comes up. I think that's one of the things that makes me most nervous. And yes I'm aware there are things I should be much more nervous about. I don't think I want anyone practicing on me. 😱 I handle having my blood drawn really well but my veins are very difficult to find so I'm usually stuck numerous times. When I was sick one time the clinic I went to was trying to give me IV drugs and stuck me seven times, the last time in the top of my foot, before giving up. I ended up in the hospital for one night. When I was pregnant they very rarely got it on the first try and sometimes even took it from my wrist. Ugh it makes cringe just to think about it! :scared:

Eel, that's terrible! I don't like getting stuck, but thankfully my veins are really easy to get. I've given lots of shots before, but since my major was animal science, they've all been to pigs, cattle, horses, dogs, and cats!

Haha, yeah.. we are having to be very trusting today. I'm pretty sure we are working with our small groups today, and they're pretty awesome. I'd let them all stick me. 😀

I'm working at a hospital in Richmond and my day consists primarily of 1) hoping I get off the waitlist at DCOM and 2) starting lots of IVs and drawing lots of blood on the surgery floor, haha. Dont feel bad, because I've probably drawn blood/started IVs from 1000+ patients in my day, including sticking the feet, hands, wrists, forearms, legs etc.....and I STILL hate getting stuck myself for bloodwork. I got to watch an interventional radiologist put in a triple lumen IJ the other day and that was unbelievably cool--way cooler than a femoral triple lumen. All the nurses were laughing at me because when I saw him pull out the HUGE introuducer, my eyes got big like a deer in headlights!

after drawing so many labs on infants/kids.... i still can't stand getting my own blood drawn. 🙄

I just wanted to post a couple of links for you guys. One, which Halloweenie posted, is about the economic impact DCOM has had on the surrounding area. Some of you may know the student who has a blurb in the clip 🙂hello🙂 The second link is about how DCOM and osteopathic medicine, and how DCOM is helping fulfill the need of primary care physicians in the area. Dr. Thompson is in this one, along with another student and Mr. DeBusk. These are both really good and definitely worth watching.

Ecomonic Impact of DCOM

Primary Care and DCOM

Enjoy!!!

my aunt emailed me this little blurb today. they live in richmond, ky. there's a familiar name in one of the quotes. 😉 what i'd like to know is what you guys are spending your loan money on??! $13mil!!!😱

That's so cool! I can't wait to get more experience!

The links are strange sometimes. It took me a couple of tries. I even went to the news homepage, searched for LMU, and found it that way. It still had the same problems, but it eventually worked.

Thanks . . . it worked finally. 🙂

My arms are sore....I think I got stuck 7 times today in total... 🙂

It was fun.

Wish I could let people start IV's in my hand...I have a "thing" with having them in the arm...don't mind getting poked...but there's just something I don't like about having them there.

Oh well.

It was 100X better than sitting in lecture, or studying Immunology...so I was happy!

piratesse, that coffee shoppe looks AWESOME...I'm so jealous.

Yeah...the injection lab was pretty cool, especially since I've never give a shot before. I must say I did pretty good. My intradermal was really good...but I was waiting for the skin to just go...poof. It was weird, but cool. It'll be interesting when we do the IV lab in a couple of weeks. Oh the poor arms of us students. There are going to be many purple arms the next day  Maybe there's some OMM we can do for that

Pedal pump!!

I'm like EE I normally get mutilated when I go to get my blood drawn. I'm so small (translate scrawny) that even though I have large veins for my size the have a tendency to either roll or collapse halfway through. I think they are just scared because of the abuse they received every time I was hospitalized and nurses would spend an hour each night (of course around 1 am, when else?) stabbing me multiple times

so, what should a guy wear to an interview? i know it sounds stupid, but I'm not sure whether I should wear a suit or a sports coat with slacks. thanks.

Suit

I LOVE Jerry Garcia ties, they are just freaking awesome with fun colors and designs, but very professional looking. Some people say they are too wild, but they are just dead wrong. I get complements every time I wear them, including interviews and white coat ceremony. If you can, check them out.

Hi everyone! This is my first post, Is anyone else interviewing on Feb 15th???I'm excited😀, I've heard the school is really pretty and great labs and its all brand new!
Any tips for the interview???

so not wearing a suit is a bad idea, right?

very bad idea..why would you want to look like the odd one when your fellow applicants will be wearing one. Also you will look more professional with a suit.

I wanted to says thanks to everyone who showed up at Oasis to talk with the interviewees on Monday night even though there were only three of us. I enjoyed my visit and hope to see everyone again. Your school is awesome.

How does everyone feel about the location of the school and the town that it's in?

I would say the location is perfect...lots of land
the town is very supportive of the school...if you read that article..I guess we are pouring millions into the local economy, and I am sure they appreciate it

TN was in a dire need of additional medical schools to serve their under served, so the opening of DCOM is generally welcomed by everyone in TN, including politicians

suit by all means.

charcoal or navy are your best bets - its not a funeral/wedding/formal event, so black is not a good idea. white shirt, light blue if you gotta. dont be too wild, but if your tie has a little color thats fine (its probably good if it matches your get up), just dont look like a clown. best of luck

I love it! Its so beautiful here. Some might think it a downside that its rural, but honestly, we never have time to miss the bigger city things. Knoxville is just over an hour away when we want to get out of the area. Its amazing!
