LMU-DCOM (DeBusk COM) Discussion thread Part 2 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Moestar doesn't come on here often and I know she declined her acceptance at DCOM so I took her off the list.
Thanks EEL! If anyone knows of other names on the list that have declined, please feel free to remove those as well and do as EEL did...put in the title what you are doing.

I also started this same list on the Facebook page, so if you have not done so yet, please insert your name there if you plan to attend DCOM.

Welcome to SDN!

So where is this raisin capitol of the world? lol
I will actually be out in CA this July.
Monterey penninsula for a motorcycle race, and Walnut Creek and LA to visit family and friends.

Good luck on the 19th!

Rasin Capital, pretty impressive, eh? Haha, its a small town about half an hour from Fresno. If I get into DCOM I will bring a bunch of chocolate covered rasins from the Sunmaid plant here, they are so yummy!

Monterey is great! I just went wine tasting in the area last month and I love the monteray bay aquarium (which is a little strange because Im terrified of fish and non-chlorinated water, but i guess as lons as im not in it im fine!) and the weather will be so nice in July for your race. Are you originally from CA?

This is probably on here 10,000 times, but how long after your file was complete did you hear something about whether you got an interview or rejected? I called at the beginning of the week and they said that I was complete. Thanks for the help!

Can anyone tell me a good website where i can check out apartments off campus. I checked on the local newspaper website and didnt find anything. Also, i did some other searches but cant find any apartments that are listed online. Any input would be helpful. Thanks!

Your best bet to find rentals is to use the link that shasta provided for the middlesboro daily news, or something like that....there aren't many apartments around here, most of the rentals are homes and it is hard to find much on the web, except for that site. You can try calling local realtors as well to see if they know of any rentals.

Hey DCOMers, this is Laila....I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for coming out even though you have a mad exam on monday! Pizza night at the oasis was great.....😀

Hey Laila,

I meant to say hi to you guys today but I didn't have a chance. But I did see you at Oasis last night, but we never got to talk. I was sitting on the same side of the table as you, but all the way on the other end. It would have been nice to say hi to a fellow Chicagoian. Anywho....good luck and I hope it all works out for you guys who interviewed yesterday!!!

I put my deposit in the mail today! I can't wait to start getting information in the mail.

Yeah it was great to meet everyone, I had a blast. Interview was really laid back, no need to freak out beforehand like I did 😉

Thanks again Dr. Acula (lol) for letting us checkout your crib, great stuff. Good luck on the exam everyone

Hey, it was great meeting all you guys and from the sounds of it your interviews went well. I actually talked to Dr. Wieting today after your interview and he said it went well. He's actually my faculty advisor. You might need to make up a MikeDO avatar if you get in.

darwin...we'll be in touch, haha.

haha yeah I actually mentioned that you were nice enough to show us around last night and he was goes "oh ya I know Blake, he's one of my students!" Absolutely in love with the school and everyone there, hope I get a call from Dr. S soon :luck:

good luck to everyone

how many people are interviewed by DCOM? Should we assume stuff like MCAT and grades are irrelevant now? This is my first interview, so I don't know how to prep myself. I figure i'll explain bad grades and etc. I've done a ton of research work as an undergrad with two publications, how does that look? Considering DCOM is focused in on primary care, do you think that'll hurt my app as they would assume i would prefer a research based school instead? Thanks.

I wouldn't say that gpa and mcat are not irrevelant..it just means they are more interested in you....when they adcom meets and decides...they look at everything...im not sure which one (gpa, mcat, or interview) they give more weight to though

I might have shot myself in the foot by showing interest in research....that's definitely not the focus at DCOM and/or DO schools in general. If you are really interested in DCOM, I wouldn't mention research. the impression i got from faculty (which is really great despite my strong desire to continue being involved in research) is their primary focus is TEACHING and turning out really great docs! 👍

It seemed like they really try to make it as easy as possible for the students to learn and retain material, and cooperate with each other to do so. the class seems laid-back, not cut throat and that is what they are trying to achieve with incoming classes as well. 😀 If you want to be involved in research, go the MD route. that being said, I don't think research and osteopathy are mutually exclusive.....especially since evidence based medicine is KEY to any medical practice. i think there's a lot of opportunity there in terms of pursuing research as a DO, why the hell not?!

I agree about research I wouldn't mention it, I asked if there were going to be opportunites to do research and they said No, that wasn't the focus of osteopathic education and if I wanted to do research I needed to look elsewhere

the first thing they said to me at the interview is that my file (grades/MCAT) are fine, and that I wouldnt be there if it weren't. The purpose of the interview is to get to know you as a person. they really want to find out if you would be a good fit for DCOM and if DCOM's a good fit for you. i think they've already decided by the interview that your grades are at the very least acceptable. during my interview, they didn't mention grades or the mcat once! they asked me questions about my interests, why i wanted to be a DO, where my interest in medical practice lies, volunteer exp, etc.....😀

good luck with your interview!

i also agree osteopathic educators really don't want us involved in research..but just more in primary care with actual patient contact

I agree with once they have invited you for an interview they have already looked past your gpa and mcat....but i don't believe the process works like a 2 pass system...(1-pass the gpa mcat hurdle to get an interview, 2- pass interview and you are in)....

What i do believe is that the adcom has already accepted gpa and mcat and want to know you better to complete their final picture of you....so, once they meet for the final decision..they look at everything once more as a whole picture instead of just the interview

Does anyone know how the adcom system works at DCOM? Thanks

Hey Cabbage,

I interviewed there on Monday, and grade discussion took up the majority of my interview. So don't assume GPA and MCAT are irrelevant just because you got an interview. I think they want an explanation from you so that when they go back to committee they can speak on your behalf. Just because they saw another good thing in your app that caused them to offer you an interview does not necessarily mean they are going to look past some bad grades. Hope this helps!

I tend to agree with this. It's your application as a whole that they are looking at. Your numbers obviously got you an interview, but if there are some discrepancies, you will want to be prepared to discuss them. For instance, if you had a rough semester, etc. Pretty basic stuff. I recommend looking at the interview feedback, and relaxing. 🙂

Darwin, did you get the chance to speak with Dr. Teitelbaum?

i also agree osteopathic educators really don't want us involved in research..but just more in primary care with actual patient contact

I disagree. Definitely at DCOM this would be true but TCOM has many opportunities to participate in research and it is definitely not discouraged. Osteopathic medical education and research are not mutually exclusive.

you are right...i meant that in DCOM terms....however, it may be diff at other schools...but generally speaking..osteopathic students are discouraged from research so they can make a greater impact directly to patients in a clinical setting....that was the whole point of AT Still's philosophy...to provide patient (clinical) care where other dr's dared not to go..no? (im obvioulsy leaving out the omm part...but to provide care to the underserved was of a primary concern as well)

perfect..so this basically provides evidence to the fact they use the interview as a supplementary tool to evaluate you...but keep in mind gpa and mcat's are important...and I am sure they are pressured to keep a certain minimum average as a new school to better increase reputation

I really don't believe that there is anything wrong with talking about your research past. It shows that you have an interest in furthering medicine and bettering the lives of patients using evidence based techniques. There's nothing wrong with that! Just because we aren't a big research school now doesn't mean we aren't going to be.. The new science and research building is on its way real soon, and our science faculty can't wait to start getting back into research again along with their teaching duties. Some of our clinical faculty even have research trials going on. You guys were mentioning Dr. Weiting ealier.. he has some kind of trial going on using Botox with musculoskeletal problems (wish I knew more of the details). We might not be offering DO/PhD right now, but graduating as a DO doesn't mean you can't be involved in research. Some of our students are even going to be involved in writing a paper on an anomaly found in the anatomy lab this year. Yes, we are primary care oriented and as a student you probably won't get much additional experience in research during school, but that in no way prohibits you from being able to be involved in research upon graduating later on, so don't be discouraged! Research experience is still a great thing and still makes you look good.. and even more, its a part of your story in how you were involved in medicine before application. Part of interviewing is telling your story, and not telling the whole story is not being yourself.

My roomie just reminded me about some school emails we were sent giving us opportunities to be involved in research for the summer... so opportunity is out there.

About defending your grades.. if the question comes up, just tell the truth and then follow that with the things that you did to improve the situation. They wouldn't be interviewing you if they didn't think that you could be successful here.👍

I was just saying the same thing to my roomie. I did my Masters at UNTHSC where TCOM is located, and it is an amazing research school! They have a million things going on there.. even the Osteopathic Research Center. I'm pretty proud to be a UNTHSC School of Biomedical Sciences alum.... btw I got accepted to TCOM and chose to come to DCOM... I really believe in my new school! If you are curious, here is a link to some of the things going on over there. EEL is right being a DO and research are definitely not mutually exclusive.

I didn't know you went to UNTHSC! I'm currently doing my MPH there and will graduate in May. I promise I wasn't just trying to spout of information of which I know nothing about. 😉

I agree with this post. During my interview at DCOM I asked if there would be research opportunities available and my interviewers were very receptive to this question. They talked about the new science/research building and other summer opportunities. I did not get the feeling that I shouldn't be inquiring about research. If it's one of your interests then ask about it and let them know that you're interested.

Yep and I'm so freakin' excited! :biglove: My husband and I are both in the program and we started back in the summer semester of 2005. 😱 I will be graduating in May but my husband will still be taking classes in the summer although he could've graduated in May. He doesn't care about actually walking anyway whereas I love graduation, especially Pomp and Circumstance. He already walked at his MBA graduation ceremony back in '01 so I guess it isn't as big of a deal to him. You guys are all invited to come see me graduate!! 😀

WOW! I was told the opposite by Dr. Lenz during my interview! 😕 I have a very research heavy background and we discussed it for about 10 minutes during my interview. I was told that I could do an elective in research (maybe even at the hospital that I work for now) if I arranged it during 4th year!

Wait, Laura were you kidding!? 😱

keep in mind that these are all personal opinions.....so i guess it's all a guessing game...but research ..especially getting your name on a study would help tremendously...

I don't know if it would give you a greater chance over other extracurriculars....but it would def help

Yeah, well I have 3 publications from my current lab and they were very interested in my research during the interview. I don't think it was the only reason I was accepted, but I think it definitely didn't hurt! 👍

No I wasn't kidding that was the only negative thing in my interview, it was obvious they were very anti research and almost acted upset that I brought it up, it probably just depends on who you talk to

uh oh...i guess its best to probe your interviewer on research prior to divulging your research background to see where he or she stands

I'm really curious with whom you interviewed.. I know we are not anti-research. We haven't been discouraged in that at all here as students. Sorry you had a bad experience with that.

Dr Routman and Dr Biel, it was Dr. Biel speificallly that jumped on me about the research.

It was at the end when asking questions and I said "will there be any opportunities for me to do research" and he said

"No, if you are interested research you need to go to an allopathic school we will not have research opportunities for you here"

Crazy..I mean technically we don't, but... Maybe he was just being honest meaning that if you wanted to really be involved in research during ungrad, DCOM wouldn't be the best fit since that's not really what the focus is on.. and its best to go to a school that best fits your goals. Anyhoo, since you rocked out the MCAT yesterday, you prolly don't have anything to worry about. 😀

the interview went fine other then that and I don't think it was a big enough deal to even leave an impression I doubt they even remember I asked it......but regardless once they see that I scored a 45 on the mcat nothing will matter 😉

nascardoc ur a chicagoan? same here, hopefully i'll meet u on the 4th at oasis

I'm heavily involved in research at my undergraduate school (in fact I just got a paper published as 2nd author) so I did mention my research experience. I got an acceptance regardless of showing my interest in research. They did mention that there was going to be a research building going up soon. Does any current DCOMers know when they will complete that building because I think it might be nice to do some research while attending school (couple hours a week that is).

Also just wanted everyone to know that I actually think this is my final choice. I had to decide between this and LECOM-Erie and I am almost positive that this school is the one. I have already submitted the deposit to live in student housing so I guess I will see alot of you guys there!

We were told in our info session yesterday that they will definitely be having more research in the near future, especially with the addition of the new science building that is in the works. Furthermore, I believe it was also said that you could work on a research project as one elective, although it would have to be pre-approved. Doesn't seem like they are ANTI-research, but yes, definitely not heavily research oriented (like most/many DO schools).

Sure, I'll be there....why not. 🙂

As for the research discussion, the are definitely possibilities out there. Yes, DCOM is not research oriented, but that doesn't mean no research is ever done or allowed. I know there are several students who have expressed research interests and have as gone as far as presented their ideas to faculty. A majority of the ideas, that I'm sure will happen, revolve around OMM and it uses/effectiveness in certain diseases. Obviously, once the new science and research building is up and running, there will be more opportunities. Eventually there will be the DO/PhD program, but again, that is really far off. Not only will the science and research building help DCOM, it will help LMU itself get more research oriented professors and labs. But I didn't know about the research electives you could use during 4th year....thats pretty cool. Its not something I will do, but its cool to know about nonetheless.

I'm sorry the whole research discussion turned into such a big deal, I wasn't trying to cause mischief just stating my experience

No....actually this is a good discussion....don't feel bad Laura 😀 There were just a lot of mixed answers out there, so I just wanted to add to what Piratesse said and make sure eveyone knows what's going on and is on the same page.

I hate immunology +pissed+ :boom:

That is all......
