I would like to know where all the good food is in Detroit! Eastern European Restaurants, Indian Restaurants, Ethiopian Restaurants, any of these?

Can one really judge the greatness of a city w/out talking about the food it offers?

I'm looking forward to living in Detoit and the clinical experience Wayne Med is known for- but at the end of the day good food makes all the difference, no?

but the real question is... how can you really enjoy food as a vegetarian... doesn't this cut out 90% of all good food??? how can you claim to be a food lover, while only liking the most wretched of foods!? 😛 😉

Your best resource for finding restaurants is Metrotimes.com

Here are some of my favorites in the styles you mentioned:

The Peacock (Indian in Dearborn), Gandhi (Indian in Hamtramck), Under the Eagle (Polish in Hamtramck), Dakota Inn, Jacoby's (German in Detroit); Blue Nile (Ethiopian in Ferndale)

Also:

El Comal (Central American), Vicente's (Cuban), Small Plates (Eclectic), Black Pine Tree (dirt cheap Japanese/sushi in Southgate), Cadieux Café (Belgian), La Shish (Middle Eastern in Dearborn), Annam (Vietnamese in Dearborn), Slow's (hip barbeque)

In the WSU area (all eclectic w/a lot of vegetarian dishes):

Haven't been up to too much. I turned down my Albany acceptance, so I'm definitely going to be at Wayne unless some act of God happens and I move off the waitlist at OSU. Have you checked out the UTowers in person? I'm going to Detroit in a few weeks to actually look at all the places in person (luckily I was introduced to a former high school classmate who has lived in Detroit for five years and is going to help me). Did you ever get on the facebook group? I did, but like you said there isn't too much activity there either.

it could happen.. i got an acceptance to OSU in either june or july... i think, i can't remember the date, but it was late in cycle.
 
I must disagree that one cannot enjoy great food being a vegetarian!! Quite the opposite actually - it forces one to be much more creative! Plus - food is all about the sauce in any way! Also - if you know any vegetarians you will notice that they are much more demanding when it comes to food than any carnivore!

DeMechanik - thank you so much!! I've tried most of the restaurants you listed but didn't know they existed in the Detroit area! Wonderful! I must also mention that Hamtramck has great Bosnian dishes - (i.e. restaurant "Bosnian Specialties") and also great traditional pastry shops!

So - the orientation is a whole week long! And no classes during that time? Is each day a full-day?

i totally agree with you! being a veggie does not mean giving up good food, it just means that you have to find other fun foods. i'll have to write down that list of restaurants for reference. thanks for starting that convo.
 
Some other good restaurants near the med school are American Masala (Indian food/only a couple blocks away) and Sala Thai (Thai food in the Eastern Market Area). Also, a previous poster mentioned Cass Cafe- in addition to good food they also have pretty nice beer specials on most nights.

sala thai has great food, but i will no longer order sushi from there. last summer a group of us who went and had those of us who had *sushi* as an appetizer all got food poisoning. maybe this was an isolated occurrence.. but i had food poisoning twice last summer... def don't want to do that again.

Yes, orientation is all week, and all day each day I think, although I hear it has changed some since I did it. There aren't any classes though, just many parties

What are some common stands you find at WSU Med when it comes to universal healthcare? Are there any common stands? What is the future of universal healthcare in U.S.? I know this is an extremely convoluted topic yet I still can't believe that the U.S. is the only industrialized country in the world (besides South Africa, which is currently attempting to implement a universal health care system), that does not provide universal health care!

Are there any groups on campus dedicated to the universal health care issue?

(though here AMSA is the equivilent of the UMich "pre-med club"... ugh. that's worse than any political affiliation)

yes, there are surprising amount of people that share your view... and there are probably about an equal that amount that disagree.

For the $125 yearly dues they make you pay, I'd rather just buy a used Netter's for $50 at the bookstore or from a friend 👍

I think I'll join AMA, though, since they seem to have the physician's best interest in mind
 
Hey - I am as glad that there are people who will agree with me as I am glad there will be those who will disagree! That will at least make for interesting conversations.

In regards to the socialist issue - I don't consider my support for universal healthcare to be a manifestation of my political association at all! Universal healthcare is above all a humanitarian issue and a testament to our basic rights as human beings.

I think that only the specific measure you take to achieve universal care would reflect your political preferences.

Though, as you've correctly said, all other industrialized countries have some form of universal care, they go about it in different ways and to varying degrees. Certain policies related to, but beyond, the administration of care also exist in these countries (e.g. aggressive taxation and regulation of tobacco and alcohol, restrictions on malpractice litigation, subsidization of medical education, etc.). In Germany, for example, you can earn a medical degree (or many other types of degrees) while the government pays your tuition. You'll also generally earn less than you would here once you begin practicing.
 
DeMechanik - you are right - it is all in the implementation of universal care and I am completely aware that there is room for corruption once a system of universal health care is established - as is often seen in Italy, for example. I lived in Berlin for a number of years, and I was impressed with the healthcare Germany provided to its citizens. Certainly the system is not without its flaws - although med students don't pay for their education (or at least they only pay small sums) many physicians are without jobs, from what I read in "Spiegel."

It will be interesting to see how different states in the U.S. will handle this issue. Massachusetts is attempting to make health insurance a requirement for its citizens and from what I understand California is also looking into an avenue towards the provision of universal care. The bottom line is that there will and there must be changes made to the health care system as it stands right now, and it is exciting to think that our generation of physicians will be a part of that.

Has Wayne chosen scholarship recipients yet? I was told that campus based aid is figured out soon after your verification worksheets are in, but since they extended the deadline for scholarships does that mean they are done already?

My CoA is $39k. I'm just glad my living expenses were reduced from 13k to 4k since I'm living at home. I still think I won't spend 38k if tuition is just 26k. I'm a very frugal person with money and I will probably only have food or computer related expenses. Anyway, I've received enough money for a new mac so that's not an issue.

Anyone know how they figure out how much the budget will be? It seems like it's a bit inflated and I don't want to take out the full amount. I've accepted the $8500 subsidized but I don't want to take out the 30k in unsubsidized loans.
 
It should be listed in your award letter (check pipeline), at least it was for me. However, I noticed that my Stafford was as much as possible and then I got a some scholarship and another Perkins.

Has anyone had trouble with the Perkins loan counseling going through? Or should I blame it on an international IP address?

#1: Look at your expenses for the past few years (insurance, hobbies, food, etc.)
#2: Then add a couple grand as a cushion (especially with current trends in gas prices).
#3: Ask your family (if you trust them/feel comfortable doing so) for some input as to what they think is realistic
Use that number for the amount to start off with.

One of the things that they don't really do a good job of telling folks before y'all start is that if you haven't maxed out your loans for the year you can always go into fin. aid and request an increase in your loans (usually a bit of a delay in it getting to you, but one way to get more $$).

Insurance isn't a factor as I'll only be 22 this month. Hobbies? I like working with computers upgrading them and whatever, but after I buy a new one this summer there won't be much to do for that. I was given a generous gift for graduation so that is paid for. A little unpredictable but just taking the girlfriend out for dinner/whatever else is an expense. I'm paying off the ring I bought for her but that should be paid off by the end of the summer. I'm paying back my aunt slowly for part of the tuition she paid for my last year of undergrad.

I'm living at home so I don't have to worry about a huge amount of living expenses. If food is part of that then that's probably the only expense. Then again that's just for eating out and for lunch. Food I can probably guess on looking at my credit card bills online and then adding on expense for lunch every day. Transportation may be a huge cost but I am splitting the cost with my girlfriend since we are carpooling to Wayne. It will be more than years past since I've gone to OU 3 miles away from my house so it didn't cost a whole lot.

By the way ksav, it is all listed, but I don't know how they figure out each budget component. That's my main question.

How long did it take you guys to get your awards package? From the time that they updated the review/waiting to verify materials page (after you sent in the verification sheet) to once you got the award offer... I sent my stuff in two weeks ago, just wondering how much longer it might take

I think it probably took me 3-4 weeks to get my financial award posted on pipeline.

I was told in an email that they were having problems with some packages, but I would think that it would come soon after your verification sheets are processed (especially if you don't qualify for anything other than staffords.)
 
Hey, I am trying to decide which med school I should go to next year. I know that this is the last minute but I have to choose between Wayne State and the University of Toledo School of Medicine. I am heavily leaning toward Wayne State but Toledo has a nicer campus and is not in Detroit. But having said that, it is in Toledo. The cirriculum seems pretty comprable. Does anyone have any suggestions/ information that might help me make my decission?

where is tuition cheaper? wayne will most likely have better clinical training...
 
hey guys just seeing who here is choosing wayne state over osu... or if you would if you had the choice. sorry just trying to make my mind up at the last minute.

i like osu, initially, but wsu would end up being about 40k cheaper over the 4 years.

thoughts?

i chose wsu over osu because it was cheaper for me and closer to my family. i also have a wife that preferred to stay in michigan... looking back, i do not regret the decision. however, this is a personal choice. you need to figure out where you would be happier and how important the extra cash is to you. A LOT of people would say that $40k is not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things.

i am on my way to wayne this fall, as my first choice back here in canada did not pan out.🙁

anyone know of a good temporary place to stay close to campus? i am planning on buying a car and driving all my belongings from the west coast around july 25th and then staying somewhere temporary for the end of july, maybe august, until i find a good area to live.

i would like to live downtown, somewhere kind of 'cool' and perhaps grungy (read:cheap but with character), within walking/biking distance to the school. Anyone have any ideas? does greektown or eastern market fit this description? do people actually ride bicycles for transport in detroit?

anyways, i am really looking forward to starting med school FINALLY. like many people on here, it has been a very long road...

Ride a bike in the motor city?? That's, like, unheard of 😉 .
Seriously though, there are people who ride to wayne, and I believe that there is a bike rack in front of Scott Hall. It does snow and get icy in the winter though--I don't know how comfortable I would feel riding in that. Sorry but I don't know much about downtown housing.

haha ya that's why i was asking...

when i was there for my interview in december, everyone referred to distances in 'time to drive there', even things like two minutes away. i thought maybe riding a bike was 'unpatriotic' or something. 😀 the roads and sidewalks were eerily empty of bicycles and pedestrians.

yeah, unless i live somewhere outside of the city, the bike will be staying at home. i don't think i'd feel safe biking around detroit... or leaving it chained up somewhere without it getting stolen. but you can take that as me just being paranoid (which those campuswatch emails keep reaffirming in my eyes)... here's to living in the d!

Greektown is within biking distance, but it's anything but cool and grungy. All the hipster kids live in the Cass Corridor where there are plenty of apts. w/character for rent. This is also closer to main campus (start at 2nd St. and Forest). I'd get an apt. there but I'm shacked up in a house with my girl. It would be cool to live in the Eastern Market, but you may feel isolated from the University there. Also, be wary of ads claiming that a given apt. is in a given area (like the Eastern Market). This descriptor is generally used too broadly, so make sure to get your google map on.

Biking is safer than walking in IMO. Can you bike faster than you can run?😀 All sorts of people ride in the city, from homies on ten-speeds with inverted handlebars to anti-establishment pinkos stickin' it to the oil Man.

If you like to ride your bike, then bring your bike (and some locks). The area around WSU is not that bad. If you're a "cool and grungy" urbanite, then your perspective on this issue is probably different from most (upper middle class, suburban) med students.
 
i am not cool nor a hipster, but for some reason its the type of area i prefer in my home city.

thanks for the advice! cass corridor looks perfect - i like its proximity to the dmc especially.

i can make up for my indignant conservation of resources by shopping exclusively at wal-mart. no?

if you have no qualms with walmart.... however, i'd said go to the closest meijer instead.

(that way you don't contribute to walmart continuing to outsource, which only leads to more people in the US losing jobs, which causes them to work at walmart for little pay and horrible benefits... walmart does have good prices, but is it worth the cost.. meijer has comparable prices and does not have as many issues that walmart has had... at least in the news)

that being said, the closest place to buy anything for me in college was a walmart 20 minutes away. the next closest, we were talking like 40 minutes. so, i caved in to save on gas and on time... but given the choice...
 
Does anyone here(uperclassmen) or anyone knows anyone who participate?It runs through July and I want to hear feedbacks...
