09/12/08 MCAT Club

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
have all of you guys taken advanced bio classes? I'm a non-traditional student and only took general biology and one semester of human anatomy and physiology. I found the bio section difficult to comprehend in those 70 min.. 🙁

Honestly, the thing that probably saved me on the BS was my Genetics class. My TPR class did make a big point about "make sure you learn your genetics!! MCAT loves genetics..." - since I had a whole intensive quarter of genetics, I didn't worry about it.

*sigh* I'm taking this exam again! The biggest issue was time except on the pS...I actually had 17 minutes left

Verbal: I think I had ADHD on this section because some of the readings I was thinking WTF???! The Milton's Satan one was the worst, in fact, I didn't even read the questions, I just guessed because I was running out of time....I actually did this before on a few practice verbal's and oddly enough I always get these all right! I doubt this will happen on the real mcat...lol

BS: Passages were long and dense! Right now, it's up in the air....who knows maybe this curve will do some justice for me...maybe not...but more than likely I will register for the january exam

exactly. Didn't it feel great? If I had anyone to go out with on a Thursday night...well, I probably wouldn't have anyway. I'm a glass of wine and go to bed kind of girl 🙂 But I really enjoyed myself! 🙂

Decaf wine or regular?

talking about wine.. i'll try to get drunk before my next mcat ..😀 and see what happens.. i bet no one tried that before :laugh: at least I won't be nervous 🙂

Ha, that might be a good idea. If there is a next time for me, I am going to have to try hardcore not to panic and get ADD. I took ridalin for the test, and practiced with it, but I still had a hard time concentrating.

surprisingly, i was not nervous at all.. i took so many standardized tests that i was not worried about my performance.. but i had trouble concentrating this time..hopefully, I won't have to take mcat again.😳
just in case i messed up..

Hope everyone did AMAZING!

Remember the rules, please:
1. No discussion of actual questions/answers.
2. If you aren't sure if the material is off limits, it probably is
3. Keep it vague (IE: a PS passage on electricity, VR on Mozart, BS on Mendelian genetics)
4. Relax, and enjoy your month break before scores come in! 🙂🙂
Hey guys...I want to remind you NOT to post an actual question or answer from the test.

I have a question that I hope someone here could answer.

I submitted my applications on 9/10 ( I know it is really late).

The primary deadline listed in the MSAR book is it before or after AMCAS verification?

If is after, am I screwed?:scared:😕

I dont think you are screwed... I think it is a "submit" deadline

Has anyone else not been able to sleep.... I slept 3 hrs the night before the test, then followed it up with a solid 2 hours the night after. GRRRRRRRR :bang:

I've just been sitting on the couch watching football, plan on doing the same today, but randomly start thinking of questions and looking up the answers.... it's driving me NUTS

Don't worry you will be fine. I went through the same thing when waiting for my August 5th scores. Everyone here will most likely score the same as their average AAMC scores.

Hi all, here's my take on the test:

PS: No real difficult passages that stood out. However, I did find myself struggling with a question or two in the fluid passage and the damped oscillating motion passage.

VR: This is the section that has always given me trouble in the past. After doing the first four passages, I definitely thought I was on my way to a 10+ (which is all I was shooting for) and then I got to that Milton Satan passage which tripped me up pretty bad. The last couple passages were quite fair so I guess I'm just hoping for some lucky guesses on that one passage.

WS: This section counts as I'm up here in Canada and the prompts were definitely not the easiest ones I have seen. I had decent examples so I'm just hoping I applied them well enough.

BS: Definitely harder than previous sections I took but certainly not impossible as well. The passages themselves as a whole weren't bad at all, there was not one where I thought I got destroyed on. I think the key with very dense passages and very passage-based questions is to read carefully and keep track of your information. There were definitely a couple orgo and genetics questions that I wasn't sure on though. Hopefully, there's a semi-generous curve to help us all out.

Good luck everyone, see you in a month!

PS:I thought this section was fairly straight forward ex dot for a few tricky questions. Didn't really get bogged down on any calculations. I think the key thing in doing ps is to estimate roughly, boldly, and use dimensional analysis whenever you can!

Vb: overall it was okay. Didn't face any completely incomprehensible passages. I saved the Milton passage to do at the end, and I am glad I did that because I felt the Milton passage was defnly the hardest one for me.

BS: I remembered one passage being particularly difficult. It was about Cell adhesion. The passage was very dense, and the questions were like paragraphs long!! I had to reread the passage at the end, and ended up changing a few answers. I didn't know if that was a good idea, but oh well

Congradulations everybody on being done with the exam. I hope to hear good news from everyone

did anyone else think that the PS was NOT that easy? I mean, I didn't think it was train wreck bad, but i definitely though it was harder than the AAMC's

I've lost sleep over this too! Just when I think I can get a good nights sleep and start to finally dose off some question pops back into my head making me wonder what I did wrong or something! Ah! It's killing me too but I keep telling myself that I can't do much or change my questions so I can just hope for the best!
Oh and I totally zoned out and watched football but it was a devastating loss for the chargers 🙁 what team are you watching for?

Hey, I was also doing up the 12er:

PS- It was exactly like AAMC practice 8-10. I had 14 minutes to recheck everything and finished 5 minutes ahead of time. There were a few questions about the damped oscillations that I had to reason through, and 1 discrete I 50/50'd (went the right way, turns out). Expecting a good score here.
VR- I was uber focussed off the start, and i think I really nailed that passage about Platonian/Aristotelian views on theather. Milton's Satan passage was not that bad, as in some of my practice material, I already read about Paradise lost and Milton, so it seemed familiar territory. My last passage was about complexity definition, and there was 1 or 2 questions which really had almost nothing to do with the text. Last time I got an 8, but exitting the VR section, I did not want to kill myself this time around, so maybe a good sign. Maybe a 9, or plaise the lord, and 10+.

WS- whatever, ...I saw one of the prompts previously, so it was not a biggy coming up with examples.

BS- My fever kicked in during this section. However, I was on a roll for first 3 passages. Then I got to the "weird genetics" portion, the one with sepsis/S.pneu, etc... Big time sink, but I think I missed 1 question tops. It was a long and difficult passage, but steady reasoning coulda brought anyone through. I actually found 1 or 2 orgo questions that I had to guess on, and this was strange, as on all my AAMC practice tests, I got 95%-100% of orgo questions right. However, I liked the protein sequencing passage, not so much the other orgo passage, as the equations did not fit on the screen.

It's my thoughts in a box. :meanie:

Although this test was at 12pm, I was really really sleepy during the test. I have no idea why because I got a good night sleep and woke up at around 9am. So that didn't help me a whole lot on verbal.

PS: wasn't so bad. I just didn't know how to do the theoretical yield question and I felt really stupid. But other than that, it was alright...kinda like the AAMC practice tests.

VS: kinda hard. I never know how I do on this section. I've gotten from 6 to 10 on this section. I didn't like the passages. They were too long. I usually hate the natural sciences verbal passages. So not so good but we'll see.

BS: I thought this section was one of the hardest BS I'd ever taken. But my upper div bio classes really helped me here. Especially on the cancer and neuro passages. A lot of genetics on this test. I think I did pretty well on this section.

We will all find out in a month I guess.

In regards to the theoretical yield question, I'm pretty sure there was a typo on the answer choices or in the question stem.

Should I contact the AAMC and be like wtf?

dude...same here. I tried to get distracted by beer and hold'em. Although recently i just learned how to play chess. It's actually kind of fun.

Regardless of what i've said, football is the best coping method for waiting. I just wish it were played everyday.

Slin -

Judging by my username, OSU AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Go ahead and make fun of me all you want, my school deserves it :sad:

Also, LT is on my fantasy football team so I somewhat feel your pain... could it get any worse? At least I dont have Brady...

i cant wait for tonight's game! brett favre and the jets vs LT and the chargers! its going to be a game to watch, and i hope that LT can carry us through this!!! i dont have fantasy league, but my bf has been doing it... and oh chargers need a comeback.

eek less than a month until scores come out!

hey guys, I took the mcat 9-13-08
i thought like many of you that the PS was pretty straight forward
VR was a beast, i did finish nearly the amount of questions as practice tests
BS was also really easy, there was one passage that required drawing a diagram to understand the material btu once I did that then it was not bad

I guess after reading all the replies on this forum about the BS being so hard, i am starting to question how hard the BS was. was it easy or was i so aloof to the question that i did understand that they were hard?

oh well lets hope it was the former.
good luck to everyone during this month of anticipation

Yea, it's suppose to be Oct.14.
Hopefully we can maybe even get it a day or two early because I am going crazy waiting.

Anyone remember this one from the Exam Krackers AO CD's:

"This is it, this is the MCAT, this is the real thing! Will I spend my Wednesdays playing golf at the club with the Senator and his wife or will Wednesdays mean league night at the local bowling alley?"

This just about sums up how I'm feeling waiting for the 14th to roll around.

Come on already! Arrrgghhhhhh!!! :diebanana:

Ummm so we get it back in 2 days probably... wow

I haven't even thought about the MCAT, honestly. My grandpa passed away = went to India for 2 weeks, came back and me and my gf broke up, all the while I've worked my butt off to catch back up in all the school that I missed.... and holy **** it's 10/11 already.

Must be nice for me, to totally forget about the test huh? 🙄

Sorry to hear about your dad. I've been equally disappointed with this months events. I got two tickets from an ******* of a cop that added up to over $200.00. To rub salt on the wound the spot where he gave me the ticket had a huge campaign banner advocating McCain and Palin.

I'm a long time lurker, first time poster. I am hoping for the scores to be released on Monday since I have an interview on Tuesday. It would be nice to go into the med school and say, "my new scores are awesome!"

Isn't Monday Columbus day?
It's Thanksgiving long weekend for us in Canada.
They wouldn't release scores if it's a holiday. So earliest will be Tuesday I think.

Today is Columbus Day. October 12th is Columbus Day. Monday is the day they are celebrating since today it falls on a Sunday. It's an excuse for sales and all that other stuff. The only people who get off for Columbus day are the schools. Trust me, I have work on Monday!

Man, that's brutal. I hear you guys on this month sucking big time.
things have been rough at work, crunch time on exams for class, and problems with the girlfriend all driving me nuts.
hopefully we will hear some results monday, I can barely stand waiting till the 14th

Oh, so even though you said you were retaking, they reviewed your app anyway and sent you an invite? Your first scores must have been pretty good then?

My scores were ok. I'm sure some people would have been happy, but I wasn't. I did let the schools know I was retaking, but I was offered an invite anyway. But, like the rest of you on this board, I am anxious for the new scores to be released. It would be a nice treat to have the scores a day early.

The scores will not be coming out tomorrow (unless someone goes to work on their day off to release the scores) because the AAMC employee benefits website says that tomorrow is a paid holiday.

AAMC currently recognizes the following 10 days as paid holidays:

* New Year's Day
* Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
* President's Day
* Memorial Day
* Independence Day
* Labor Day
* Columbus Day
* Thanksgiving Day
* Friday following Thanksgiving Day
* Christmas Day

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but look at it this way, now you don't have to bother checking all day tomorrow.

What a bunch of lazy punks. Monday isn't even the real Columbus day. Today is Columbus day. Monday is the shopping version of the holiday. What a rip!

lol. that's pretty funny that you looked it up. But I appreciate it 🙂.

Yeah thanks.... you are saving me the agony of checking throughout all 8 hours of my work shift today.

Damn.... so tomorrow is the big day.

The funny thing is, all the stuff that has happened over the last month have made me realize how little meaning this first score holds. I was shooting for a 35 before. Now if I see a 30, I'm taking it and running into the application process next year. If I see lower than a 29, I'm getting my act together and acing this test in April.... keep hope everyone and good luck!

hopefully by 10, 1 hour to go...

anxiety is a biatch! 👎 killing me over here

sooo...today's october 14. it always seemd so far away! :smack: OOooOoOH

:luck: good luck to all my fellow sept 12ers!!!!!! :luck:
