2007-2008 Secondary Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
And I've got it on good authority that NYCOM won't be sending out secondaries (to the folks getting interviews) for at least a month. Just FYI.

Has anyone gotten a secondary from Western or just interview invites? My application won't be complete until my MCAT comes in (early September) so I'm hoping they'll send me a secondary so I can have it done by the time my scores come in.

Good Luck everyone! :luck:

I have now received all of my secondaries, including MD ones, except for KCUMB. I'm slightly worried although I know I shouldn't be, but thier website says that they send a secondary as soon as they receive your application from AACOMAS. Has anyone received KCUMB's secondary?

Nope, Havent heard a thing. I thought about emailing them. But I figure it will be good to be patient.

I just got an interview at TUCOM-NV, anyone else???😕

No, I completed their secondary a while back but I forgot to send my LORs in until a few days ago. Hopefully I hear from them in the next week or so.

I'm waiting for KCUMB as well. And Nova. I applied to 36 schools total (DO and MD), and I've heard from all but 8 schools. I'm getting sick of waiting haha.

I have come to the conclusion that NOVA and KCUMB are focused entirely on getting this next class' affairs in order, or they are doing some serious screening. Im betting on the former

I'm waiting on VCOM, NSU, and NYCOM secondaries.

Congrats to those who got interview invites already!!! That's great news!!!😎

On average, about how many words do you guys have in your secondary essays? Thanks!!!!

Im at about 350 or so. I get my point across, polish them up a bit and have a family member read it. Then I send em ! 👍

I was pretty short for most of them. I think 400 words was the highest and as low as 260 for some questions. As long as it is not too long I think we are fine as long as we answer the questions. I'm thinking the shorter the better.

well I have no idea how to answer some of the questions in only 400 words, I think my UNECOM essay was 629 words...but this is my dilemma... it allowed me to put in the whole essay and submit it, however after re-reading the instructions it says the limit is 2000 characters.... my essay was 3, 180 characters....should I email them and re-submit it? do you think it cuts off the words while they are trying to read it? or should I just ignore it and hope that 2000 characters was just a suggested limit??

If the limit was 2000 then it behooves you to write under that limit. Even if it allowed you to submit I am sure there is a way for them to get a quick count. I wouldn't just give them a reason to reject you. One thing they are looking for is the ability to follow directions, even if you can get away without doing it.

Good Luck

Speaking of following directions, I think that is the point of MSUCOM's secondary. They have all types of small instructions: no staples, three copies, format this...

hiya...

awww I think you are right... I was hoping the consensus would be...that it didn't matter but I agree with you, I will email them tomorrow to ask them if I can re submit it with a shorter essay and I will make sure I follow the word limits on all of the other applications...thanks!!

Hey guys,
How are you tackling the 'describe yourself' essays that pop up in secondaries? Right now I'm looking at one of LECOM's essays. Do they really want a picture of you entirely, or just the qualities that you think will make you a good physician?

Also looking on here, it seems that the general consensus is that the shorter the essay is, the better. Has everyone been making their responses shorter than, let's say, their AACOMAS personal statement?

I described qualities that made me unique and a good physician.

Most of the essays have a 500 word limit, which is shorter than the aacomas (in my case).

When did KCUMB send out their secondaries last year?

Hey everyone,
I just received my invite to fill out a secondary for KCOM. Also for people wondering about KCUMB, I talked to admissions and it will be out on August 1st. He said he hoped it would be a writeable PDF but it may still be paper. Just thought I would let everyone know.

On another note, I am retaking the MCAT on August 9. I think I'm going to have my letters of rec sent now but I'm going to wait until after that date to finish my applications (I only applied to 3 schools). I figure they wont really look at my application until they receive my next MCAT. Any advice?

You should send in your apps now. After you nail the mcats you can just fax the scores and you will be complete right away. GL

Got another interview invite today. TOURO-NV. Will interview either the Aug.27th or 28. 😀

Shut up! Haha jk. I want an interview invite. 🙁 All I have so far is a couple rejections and "complete" applications. Get moving, adcoms!

Got another interview invite today.

Your interviews will consist of the adcoms feeding you grapes and fanning you while they read you a list of reasons you should attend their school, including offering you your own personal cadaver (for dissection & to help w/ the laundry), a full scholarship, a brand new Hummer truck w/ spinners for your mom, and a little white envelope filled with dead presidents.

j/k - Congrats on the great news. Your in a great position already!

Thanks for letting us know! I've been wondering about that. 😀

I'm in the same boat as you; retaking on August 9th. I haven't been working on secondaries because I've been too busy studying 🙁 I have 25 secondaries waiting for me! 😱 Im going to start on them after I take the MCAT. I think it's a good idea to focus on studying for now and then tackle the secondaries after August 9th! That's what I'm doing 🙂

Good Luck :luck:

I agree, you should focus on you MCAT now and finish secondaries after. You will have at least 2 weeks before the scores get there anyway. Good luck on that god forsaken test!:luck:

okay...so what is everyone doig about secondary applications that are not in word or can't be edited using adobe reader??

what do I do with the hard applications... I have sent two in written by hand (my essays were typed but not the biographical questions) but it just feels soo... not professional... and messy...even though I wrote them neatly...hmmm can I scan them into the compute, but then how I I input them into word??...hmmm how does one accomplish this?...🙂

search online for adobe/typewriter (it is a free ad on for one of the adobe programs)... or something. It is expensive, but works.

Got another interview invite today. TOURO-NV. Will interview either the Aug.27th or 28. 😀

Congrats!!! I think I'll be going in early Oct. I've got some work stuff that is keeping me here, since I'm already leaving in Sept. for Western (yay!)...🙁

:luck::luck::luck:!!! at your interview. I'm curious to know what you think.

Got an interview at WVSOM on Sept. 14th and Touro-NY.

Someone should probably start an osteopathic med. school interview thread for everyone to post in and discuss things like transportation, hotels, etc.

Congrats on your interviews!!! Did you get the Touro-NY invite via email?

Thanks!!! Good :luck::luck:!!

No. The secondary application implied that if the secondary was sent in, the submitter would automatically receive an interview. To verify if this was the case, I e-mailed the admissions director. He replied that, yes, if I sent in the secondary I would get an interview in September.

I like NYC, but I talked to a NYC detective who is a friend of mine and he said he wouldn't want to live near the 1-2-5. I'm going to visit and see for myself.

FYI, check your e-mails because NSU's secondaries are out.

Rock on ! Got the Nova secondary this afternoon. Got it done too. I had to go back and look on their website for LORs though. Unlike other secondaries it didnt say anything about letters. BTW, as of now I have no "Liberal Arts" professor LOR. So I just sent every LOR I had hoping it would be ok. Got a NSU D.O. Alumni letter too ! 😀

Oh really?! That's great news. Then I guess I'll be joining you😀. Maybe I should have read the supplemental more closely😳

Also, I used to live not too far from 125th st. The location is totally fine. I might not go walking around by myself late at night, but they have this awesome soul food restaurant right near the school. Yum! (that is, if you're into soul food)

got both pcom's, and TOURO-NY via snail mail

VCOM email just saying they are reviewing my primary
Tanner82, i just sent in my primary..i know its a bit late. I see that you got your secondary from Touro-NY. Would you mind sharing what the eassy is? Thank you soo much!

sure...

"On a seperate sheet of paper, type an essay discussing your aims in seeking admission to the College of Osteopathic medicine. Include such items as your personal and academic background, your career goals, experiences which nutured your interest in the health fioeld and in the Osteopathic profession specifically, your shadowing experience, and any other factors which you feel are relevant to admission (2 page max)"

get ready... $200 application fee.... was a hit I just couldn't take... gl :luck:

Got the Nova secondary invite too today, but I couldn't get it all done because work kept me pretty busy (damn I hate 36 hour shifts!). I've got my AZCOM secondary complete, but I've been having trouble getting a picture taken to send in with it so I haven't mailed it out yet. That means that I've only got KCUMB to hear from now for my DO schools!

Nate.

So I had my friend read over my PS and she pointed something out that her law school books said not to do. She said not to repeat information that is already in your application. Like if I list activities under experience not to really repeat the same thing in the personal statement. I was wondering if this was something not to do on medical school applications as well? If someone could help me I'd really appreciate it.

think of it like this - they allow you a specific amount of space to show them who you are and what you are about. this space includes you PS and your experiences. do you really want to waste some of that space telling the adcoms the same thing twice? if you have to re-mention an activity or experience in your PS as a precursor to something else - like it was the basis for a bigger and better thing that you did, or pushed you to do whatever else - thats fine. but then mention it again in as few words as possible and then discuss the bigger and better thing that you did. this worked for me - and i had a med school dean review my file before i submitted it. good luck to all.

i also got nova sec😀...and tuoro nv pre-sec rejection🙁...oh well...my mcat was crappy😳

What are you guys filling out for the following question on secondaries:

"Is there any information relevant to your ability to complete the XYZ College of Osteopathic Medicine program and be certified for licensure that we should consider? If "Yes", please explain."

Are they looking for traits and abilities that will help fulfill becoming an osteopathic physician or is it something more along the lines of not being able to perform the duties?

Any help is appreciated!

I took it as "not being able to perform the duties necessary". So I put no on all of them.

Has anyone heard anything from LECOM, PCOM, or UMDNJ since submitting secondaries to them?
Thanks.

So I've been reading everyone's posts here, and I have my first interview invite to WVSOM on September 5th. I am filling out the secondary application right now, I am pretty much done with it. However, I have a question regarding the part where you add a picture of yourself. For those filling out WVSOM secondaries, did you add a picture of yourself or did you leave it out? I don't know if it's optional or not, just thought I'd ask you all. Thanks!
