🙁 ... Sad.

Why sad? I guess the way I phrased it sounded like it was a bad thing... I was just thinking that the admissions office staff didn't want to come back from the holidays to voice-mail boxes and in-boxes containing tons of messages from applicants wondering if they were "complete" or not.... hence the motivation to send out a big batch of "complete" emails beforehand...

Sorry, my remark was meant to be taken facetiously. 🙂

Has anyone heard anything post-interview recently? I interviewed the week of November 17th and am rapidly approaching my 6 week mark.. Still no word.

My guess is the weather. Seriously.

Portland, like the rest of the north, was hit with a bunch of snow. The difference is that Portland doesn't plow or salt much at all, and there's a huge worry about ice storms here which are super dangerous.

So the last two weeks have had intermittent snow days and holidays, and I wouldn't be surprised if the adcom just didn't get to meet when they were scheduled, which is usually one morning a week.

Also, mail wasn't being picked up or delivered for almost a week up here on the hill.

Sorry it's taking so long--I hope you hear soon! In the meantime, have a happy new year!

Seriously OHSU? I interviewed over 6 weeks ago. Starting to get impatient.

ok. So it's January 5th, my application is complete, but still on my desk. I am EXTREMELY broke (as most applicants are by this time) and worse of all, I lost the email this school sent me that had the deadline on it. I could SWEAR it was January 15th, but now I'm doubting myself and thinking it was in December.

ANYWAY, although I am super late in sending this in, I would hate to send it, have them cash the check, and then tell me that I didn't meet my deadline. I understand that they might still accept it because I'm within my time frame (again, I have NO CLUE) and then reject me because I'm not good enough or whatever (thus still loosing the money); but at this point I'm just holding on to a that "one in a million" chance to still get a spot.

After all, we all just need one school to say yes right? It's all about staying positive, if not, there's no surviving this process! 😀

Any advice is appreciated! Mainly though, does ANYBODY know the ultimate deadline to get things in? Surprise, surprise, no one returns phone calls or emails 🙁

The MSAR says Jan 15th.

BUT...I think they give individual deadlines depending on when they send your secondary to you. (I think mine was sometime in October or November)

They did appear to give deadlines based on when you received the secondary - I had about a month to finish mine. I would call the school, salsanchiplvr - I believe that the appropriate admissions contact info/person has been posted earlier in this forum, and if you've already tried, they may be back and fully recovered from the winter break by now.

On another note, does anyone know if OHSU accepts letters of interest? I haven't been able to find info on this, but it seems like they're so bogged down in things that it might not be appreciated.

Yes, they accept letters of interest. I sent one in. I think I emailed it and sent it snail mail.

I was wondering, for those of you who have been accepted, how long did it take to get the packet in the mail? I got the acceptance email on Dec. 13th, but haven't received any snail mail yet.... Thanks!

salsanchiplvr, you should definitely turn in this application. do it today. ohsu, as you may have noted, tries to be non-rolling admissions. i know people who interviewed in april last year and were accepted. if you would like advice, you can email lori toner ([email protected]) who is a good contact in the admissions department. but if you think it was the 15th, by all means, slap a stamp on it and turn it in now! $100 is a drop in the bucket in this overall process, even if you were wrong about the deadline. my friend missed her deadline by a week this year and they still accepted her app.

good luck!!

i got mine about two weeks after the acceptance. but with the holidays and snow, i bet they are running behind. they said about a month. so... if you haven't received it towards the end of this month (giving them a little extra time), then maybe you should call. there is no deposit or anything to hold your place, you just sign a paper and turn it back in. and they also ask that you send in official transcripts- but that's just prior to matriculation.

OHSU definitely accepts letters of interest, and (for my program at least) they appreciate them too. I sent a letter of intent to the school last year, and got a phone call from the program director updating me on my status at least once every other week until I was accepted. Granted, the MD program probably won't call you every other week, but that doesn't mean the letter won't help.

As for the acceptance packets, some people get them right away, and other...don't. I didn't actually get my packet in the mail until halfway through orientation, but the school did send the info to me electronically when they realized I hadn't received anything.

Thanks for the words of encouragement doubleE 😀 I'm actually going to include a letter telling them my situation and if they won't accept it to not cash my check haha Hopefully they can be considerate enough to do so! *sigh* I just wish we didn't have to pay with check...I have two other ones floating around out there and they still haven't cashed it! I hate having to keep my account updated at all times to make sure nothing bounces! Good luck to everyone!!

Finally got an interview invite! 😱

Hi Guys! For those of you who have already interviewed, does OHSU offer student hosting? I.e. should I book a hotel, or are there OHSU students who offer their place for interviewees to stay for a night? Thanks!

For those interested, I mailed in my secondary app 9/29, received the "complete" notification email 11/19, and got an interview invitation 1/8/09. Also, I am a California resident (don't know if that's relevant).

I'm a portland resident, applying to OHSU. since OHSU doesn't offer student hosts if you don't mind crashing no a couch send me a PM. i live in South East, a short jaunt from the school by car, not too long by bus.

Congrats on the interview invite! Unfortunately, there's no student hosting at OHSU.

Actually they do. There should be a contact in the interview invite e-mail they send out. I stayed with a host when I interviewed in November and it was definitely a great experience.

On another note, I just got an e-mail informing me that I've been put in the hold pool :/

Same here! I haven't gotten anything yet though. Are you out of state?

Yep, OHSU definitely offers student hosts (usually for 1-2 nights, but some people choose to stay longer). It's pretty straightforward to get matched up with a host - just email our admissions liaison and send them a short blurb about yourself. Then they'll send an email to the hosts, and one of us will offer you a place to crash.

Thanks for the info, URhere and merryjoulton. 🙂

I stayed in the Co-op - it's like Real World Med School, only I didn't witness any scripted sexual drama. They've got a spare bedroom for interviewing students, students from every year to talk to, also, it's a pretty nice house only two or three minutes walk from the admissions office. You can email ohsucoop at gmail dot com to see if they've got space.

Uh oh - I interviewed on Nov 18th too and haven't heard, I wonder if that means I have a rejection heading my way.. 🙁

I finally got ahold of someone in admissions. I am on my 16th week of waiting and they said it will be a few more weeks. Apparently, the 8-12 weeks that they tell you that you wait, before hearing about an interview is a "minimum"...shouldn't they just said a minimum of 12 weeks then?

I just talked to the admissions people and they told me that if you are an Oregon resident the screening process for being complete takes longer. They are trying to verify if you fulfill the Oregon residency requirement.

Just to let everyone know...I am a Montana resident...WICHE. I was complete on 11/19/08 and was invited for an interview on 1/08/09. Just wanted to let you guys know. They also gave a choice for interview dates, which was very nice. And the invite was via email.

thanks for the update! what were your choices for interview dates?

im an or resident. complete 12/2, invite 1/13

thanks for the update! what were your choices for interview dates?
The dates offered were:

Tuesday, January 20, 2009
Wednesday, January 21, 2009
Thursday, January 22, 2009

Tuesday, February 3, 2009
Wednesday, February 4, 2009
Thursday, February 5, 2009

Tuesday, February 17, 2009
Wednesday, February 18, 2009
Thursday, February 19, 2009

Yep, lots of choices! Furthermore, they have a phone number to call to schedule the interview at your convenience. When you call, you get a message that instructs you to leave a message. It tells you that it could take up to 48 hours to return your call. Keep that in mind. And it's "first call, first serve" basis.

Let me know if you guys have any more questions.

Hey guys - just wanted to give everyone some hope, I interviewed Nov 18th and was almost sure I had a rejection headed my way since it seems like people who interviewed that same day already heard with holds, but I got the accpetance email today 🙂 I actually forgot to breathe for a second I was so excited. Good luck to everyone else, hope to see you all in portland next year!

awesome RJones7! just so you know- myself and redlemond got together for drinks last week to start getting to know our future classmates. we thought we would expand this group as others are accepted. are you in the portland area? if so, PM me your info and we'll add you to the group for get togethers.

I got the completed e-mail on 12/9 as well. I'm also getting pretty nervous. I would really like to get in to OHSU, but we'll see what happens.

first of all, i'm instate. 34Q, 3.8 @ liberal arts college. ED scribe for 1 year. research for 3 years w/ 2 publications. clinical research for one year. volunteer periodically @ doernbecher and shriners. professional dance career.

if you are in portland and want to meet and chat w/ myself and other ohsu people, let me know. otherwise when you get here for an interview (which seems likely to me based on your mdapps) let me know and i will meet you for coffee during your downtime. i have lots of ohsu friends and have been working here for years, so i could hopefully provide some useful insight. at this point however, being complete on 12/9 i bet you won't hear about an interview for a few more weeks. probably not until february. remember, if you are an oregon resident it takes extra time because they have to verify that fact.

I got coffee with doubleE during my interview! she was very nice 😀
There really is a lot of downtime during the day.
All the med students were really friendly as well. one thing I noticed was that most could NOT stop talking about how much they loved OHSU...their level of enthusiasm was not something I have seen at any other school 🙂

The length of the admissions process is what sucks, I'm not even entertaining the thought of getting outright accepted because of how OHSU works..

Congrats to RJones7 and everyone else who has an acceptance. I interviewed on 11/18 and just received the email telling me that I am on hold 🙁. I didn't think I was cool enough to be accepted outright. Does anyone know when the adcom starts to review the people on hold?

Hey, no worries! Congrats on being in the hold pile. In my class I think about half of us came from the hold pile--after May 15th!

They usually wait till they're done interviewing (usually that's the first week of May). Then once they have a better idea of how many spots they have left relative to what 'scores' people have they'll offer a few more acceptances to fill the class in mid-May. They send (I think) everyone else a letter asking if you want to be on the waitlist, and then they rank all the 'yes''s. And you get your number. (That can happen anytime starting in the latter part of May.)

Historically if you were in the first 100, you were likely to end up getting in.
Med11 got to 77,
Med12 got to 57.

So I don't know what that means for your class.

I encourage you to write down what you liked and disliked about OHSU, so that by the time June rolls around and you're frustrated as all get-out because OHSU has been in communicado for so long, you'll be able to make a good decision for yourself. For me, it was definitely worth the wait!

Congrats R Jones!

And, childoftheatom - I had to say - you're name and avatar are cracking me up. What the heck? And yet, hilarious. 😀

I think it's cause you came out of nowhere - suddenly there's this big freaky owl face on the thread...haha, still laughing.

I am looking at the OHSU curriculum, and have a question:

What the difference between the clerkships Medicine, Family Medicine, and Primary Care? They sound similar to me....
